Giving Back PICNIC AT POLO TASTE OF DEL MAR LOCALS DOING GOOD WHAT’S NEW AT KAABOO
Lifestyle Letter
What an incredible Summer it has been, Del Mar! A
s we were adding finishing touches on our September issue, I looked back at all the wonderful events we featured and so many more around town the past few months. If you are looking for one more taste of the season - the track is still running through Labor Day and speaking of taste...we are very excited for the Taste of Del Mar on September 8th. Come join us in celebrating culinary flavors and local libations that make the Del Mar Village so unique. The Taste of Del Mar will highlight our local restaurants, retailers, craft brewers and local vintners, plus live music! This month also features another incredible live music experience with the return of KAABOO to Del Mar. KAABOO has added new features, new experiences and some not to be missed performances...we highlight some of what's new on page 26. Our focus this month inside Del Mar Lifestyle is to play a small part in telling the story of some incredible organizations around town that are doing good in our community and giving back. Learn more about Del Mar Rotary in our feature story. The second oldest Rotary Club in all of San Diego right here in our backyard has been making our community better for decades in numerous ways. Check out the Brands That Give Back on page 38 for a sampling of products you probably already buy and how they give back. We spotlight a local business - Visiting Angels - that is doing incredible work with families in our community at a time in life when families need more than they can give themselves. Rick Tverdoch, who owns Visiting Angels, found his calling, and is giving back through his services. Finally, what a fun feature on Polo we have this month! Check out our Picnic at Polo story with a spotlight on how you can enjoy your experience Sundays at San Diego Polo. Plus, we are excited to give you a sneak peek into the first ever Beach Polo Cup in Southern California. Coming to the Hotel del Coronado, it is worth the drive for the day to see polo, fashion, experience some amazing cuisine, and check out the Porsche Road Rally with our friends at Porsche of San Diego. Thanks Del Mar for sharing your stories and Summer with us - we can't wait to see you out the next few months and continue to share your story in Del Mar Lifestyle.

San Diego Polo Meanwhile, San Diego Polo (a branch of Surf Cup Sports) works to develop and promote the sport throughout San Diego County. They coordinate polo activities, tournaments, and events for players, members and the public. All their signature events benefit a local nonprofit or branch of a national charity. As a community, they've helped raise millions of dollars for over 80 local charities and feature a long history of working with animal shelters, veterans groups, and others who promote healthy living and personal development, including offering a work-to-ride program that allows kids to volunteer their time working in their barn in exchange for time on a horse. When asked about what was truly special about the sport of polo, Lindsey Chronert, Director of Polo Development, says, “For me, the "it" moment that makes me love my job is when a polo event comes together and people connect with the sport and the cause.”

When you’re surrounded by positive people and vibes, and forward-minded individuals and businesses, it spurs out-of-the-box thinking and leads to greatness,” says Mandel.
The Rotary Club But one charity stands out of particular note, an organization that, for the last 112 years, has been almost synonymous with philanthropic work: The Rotary Club. While

Rotary is an international organization, Rotary District 5340 encompasses San Diego and Imperial Valley, and Del Mar Rotary Club is our local branch here. They have been extremely active: they established St. Leo’s Medical and Dental Clinic to serve the medical and dental needs of those with limited access to such care, they provide scholarships to local students, they serve food at local events, among many other efforts. Discussing his motivation for his philanthropic work, P. Martin Peters (former Rotary President) says, “We are blessed with some degree of affluence. Let’s use it to serve by feeding the hungry, housing the homeless.” Meanwhile, Dr. Janice Kurth (former Rotary District Governor) says of her journey through the Rotary, “I immediately understood their heart for serving others and knew I had to be a part of it. D
el Mar and horses go together like Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. You may instantly
think of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club with the twice-annual thoroughbred meets, but Del Mar isn't simply a one-horse town. San Diego Polo Club is just around the corner, with matches each Sunday through October 2nd, and two viewing experiences: the VIP social scene under the tents and umbrellas, plus tailgating along the field, which offers a unique and equally enjoyable way to watch the schuckers. So we hopped into a Porsche 718 Boxster, stopped by Bixby and Ball on Cedros to pick up pillows, blankets and baskets and packed a picnic fit for a polo player. Enjoying an afternoon at San Diego Polo would be especially fun for the family or even as a romantic date for two. A picnic would not be polo-class without a Pimm’s Cup cocktail and effortless summer fare, notably Chicken Salad Sandwiches on Crusty French Bread, Mason Jar Salads, Assorted Cheeses and Fruit, and homemade Lemon Shortbread Bars for dessert. 4TH ANNUAL LA COSTA FILM FESTIVAL: BRINGING HOLLYWOOD TO THE BEACH
ARTICLE SHANNON BARR | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS BRAKE
I
f you ask what local residents think of Carlsbad, chances are they’ll attest to the beautiful coast and high quality of life. However, about four years ago, some residents noticed a lack of rich art and cultural opportunities. Bringing entertainment, arts, and culture to the community, the La Costa Film Festival was born. The annual four-day film festival was founded in 2012 by Michael and Ruby Callihan, who both worked in the mortgage industry and had no previous film experience. At first, they were surprised by the large number of factors involved in running a film festival. However, the support of the Carlsbad community soon catapulted the festival’s success. “Every time we ran into a roadblock, we met people who had a tremendous background in film, with connections to Hollywood,” says Michael. “We found there’s a wealth of talent in North County that was looking for the same way to connect to Hollywood.” The festival partners with the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, which maintains a historic and mystical connection to Hollywood; it used to be a top getaway spot for the Hollywood in-crowd. The festival’s three venues—the Center Court at Omni La Costa, Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas, and The Ruby G. Schulman Theater—each offer an intimate and unique experience for attendees. Another major partner is Mandalay Sports Media (MSM), which helps bring in celebrities and panelists. Last year’s celebrities included Andy Garcia and Ed Harris. They also hold the “Reel Pitch” program, in which a celebrity prepanel selects the top 10 short films submitted, to be presented in front of studio executives and attendees on Saturday of the event. The winner has an opportunity to get film experts editing their pitch and the potential to write a real script for Hollywood. As a nonprofit organization, La Costa Dreams, Inc. operates the festival and volunteers handle the operations; they currently utilize
24
Del Mar Lifestyle | September 2016
about 150 volunteers annually. They expect a need for more volunteers to increase as they continue to grow. In 2015, there were about 4,000 attendees. This year, they aim to boost attendance to 5,000. Though they continue to grow, the goal is to maintain the intimate experience they initially started with. Part of the festival’s mission is to support the local economy, which helps sustain the festival itself. “We not only bring something that’s great value to the residents here that they can enjoy, but it’s a clean industry that attracts tourism from outside and helps the entire economy grow,” says Michael. For their opening night, they hold a special event called “It’s A Wrap Food & Wine Reception & Red Carpet,” which showcases participating local restaurants, breweries, wineries, and specialty shops. The film festival also provides exciting networking and educational opportunities for local students interested in film. Students can participate in the short film competition for a cash prize and get exclusive feedback from filmmakers. Journalism students can get a student press badge that enables them to conduct interviews on the festival’s red carpet. WHEN: October 13-16, 2016 VENUES AND PRICES:

RE-ENGAGING WITH LIFE:
Visiting Angels
ARTICLE NATALIE NEECE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
hat is life if you have nothing to engage it with?” says passionate owner and director for the Solana Beach Visiting Angels location, Rick Tverdoch. The Visiting Angels is just one call away for your loved one, whether that is someone who doesn’t have the ability to perform the same way they used to or are just simply in need of a helping hand. Tverdoch found his true calling, after retiring as an electrical engineer for 35 years, to become part of Visiting Angels. Experiencing his own heartbreak with his mother's dementia and cancer, he watched his father take care of her. Unable to help from across the country, he would listen and coach his father on how to take care of his mother in a healthy way. This experience inspired him to continue to help others. The Visiting Angels provide a variety of services for care recipients, helping them with their day-to-day lives. Caregivers are available 24x7 to assist your loved ones, whether young Case Manager Jackie or old. During Wager with client Mrs. Hodgens scheduled hours, caregivers help with medicinal reminders, bathing, cooking, cleaning, and running errands. MiraCosta Spurs Economic Development

uring a time of great economic turmoil about 82 years ago, North County San Diego’s first community college emerged. Founded during the Great Depression, MiraCosta Community College provided local students with the opportunity to earn a two-year college education. Today, the organization is making a tremendous impact on the local economy. According to their 2012 performance report, the local economic impact generates about $433.3 million each year, and students earn higher wages while businesses receive an increased output. “Being able to keep in touch with what’s happening and changing in education and technology is really important for us,” says Linda Kurokawa, director of the Community Education and Workforce Development program. Always looking for ways to meet the needs of the community, the organization partners with local businesses to train future employees, resulting in new employment opportunities, higher business revenue, and increased employee earnings. MiraCosta’s Community Education and Workforce Development program, located in the college’s Technology Career Institute (TCI) in Carlsbad, offers work-skill classes for any community member—traditional credit student or not—in categories ranging from health care and finance to dance and photography. Further supporting local economic development, the TCI

offers accelerated, certified job-training programs for students to gain specialized trade skills. It is a self-funded, fee-based program. Students earn certification in fields such as engineering technology, phlebotomy, veterinarian assistance, and high-threat security. More than 90 percent of TCI students are employed in their field, with about 98 percent of students finishing the program. The high retention rate is due, in part, to how quickly students can complete the program. They can fulfill the necessary 600 hours of training in just four months, compared to two years at other training programs. “We work with local businesses and high schools to identify areas that are needed for workers to enter the workforce, and also areas where students can earn a degree and get a local well-paying job,” says Cheryl Broom, director of Public & Governmental Relations, and Marketing & Communications. MiraCosta’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) assists local small businesses, providing free workshops on skills that include how to write a market plan and obtain a loan for expansion. From January to May this year, the SBDC provided 4,221 hours of business coaching and 270 workshops, resulting in 59 new business start-ups and increasing sales by $25 million. Additionally, the college’s job placement program provides students with a counselor to aid in their job search, to connect with students and provide assistance after graduation to ensure student success. “MiraCosta played an important role in helping me transition from one developing career (Emergency Medical Services) to my goal career (health policy and government affairs),” says alumnus Aaron Byzak, director of Government and Community Affairs for UC San Diego Health. Byzak obtained an AA in history and credits the college with helping him tap into his academic potential. His studies helped him obtain an internship with a California state senator’s office. “That ended up being a key component in starting my career in policy and politics,” says Byzak. Students also have the opportunity to impact the younger community through the Student Ambassador Program. About one-third of students from North County high schools go directly to this community college after graduation. “MiraCosta fed my intellectual curiosity
and gave me opportunities to help my community. The values that I gained there are with me today,” says student ambassador Richard Huizar, a 2014 graduate who now studies mechanical engineering at MIT. MiraCosta maintains a close connection to local businesses. Staff members meet regularly with industry leaders to discuss their business needs and ensure students’ skill sets meet their expectations. Built in close collaboration with local biotechnology companies, the college developed an innovative biotechnology facility. They recently obtained state approval to offer a bachelor’s degree in biomanufacturing, after local industry approached the college and expressed a need for degree-certified students in that area. Their hands-on nursing programs, in partnership with hospitals such as Scripps and Tri-City, enable students to complete required nursing hours in local hospitals. As Broom says, “Our goal is—if a student comes to MiraCosta and graduates—we want them to earn a degree that will help them stay in North County San Diego and get a well-paying job.” MiraCosta.edu
