Welcome to the first issue of the Del Mar Lifestyle magazine!
O
ur mission for this magazine is simple; we hope to play a key role in helping the community flourish, by producing a resource filled with news and special events that take place throughout the month. We are the exclusive magazine for the Del Mar community, sharing positive, uplifting and enlightening stories with our monthly readers. On many levels, we operate a little differently than your typical magazine. In fact, one of the most exciting facets of our publication is that it truly belongs to the community. Not only is Del Mar Lifestyle exclusively for and about the residents, businesses and community, it is the true pulse of what’s happening in the Del Mar community. So, this is your magazine, Del Mar, Enjoy! Every month we will introduce you to local families, businesses and homes that make our seaside community unique. The history of the Del Mar Racetrack is our feature story as we approach opening day this month. We also have the chance to meet Betsy and Jude Paganelli, ownewrs of Fair Trade Décor, located right in the heart of Del Mar! We also meet 35 year North County residents Lynda and David Linaugh, who we give a big THANKS! for sharing their beautiful home with us and allowing us to feature their drought friendly landscaping and amazing backyard oasis. Tips and advice are shared from the experts at Eco-Minded Solutions. Look for our educational feature from our financial specialist, local resident Thomas Blottenberger, CFP®,ChFC®. He shares his extensive knowledge on interviewing, and choosing a financial planning partner for life. Keep an eye out for Rick Tverdoch, owner of Visiting Angels Home Care. He is Giving Back and caring for our elderly community through his business. A true angel in disguise in our community! And for your decor and latest summer home trends, local expert, Kelli Kellejian Barrett Allied, ASID shares the top picks from Polo Bay Interiors and Consignment to get your home ready for the summer months ahead. Finally, the most exciting part of this magazine for families is that we’ll be spotlighting a new feature of Del Mar every month. This month check out local youth performing arts venue, Stars Align. They will be hosting a pay-it-forward event on July 15th, celebrating music and the arts. This is one event not to miss! Whether it be a locally owned favorite restaurant, or a children’s boutique or The Del Mar Art Center, we will be sure to explore local venues and topics that excite and engage our community. This is your magazine Del Mar, so we encourage you to write or call us with any thoughts or suggestions for upcoming issues. We would love to hear about your business, family or even an inspiring resident or student! We would like to sincerely thank the city of Del Mar, the Del Mar Village Association, and the team at The Del Mar Race Track for their contributions to this new magazine and as well as everyone in the community receiving this magazine! A big thank you to all of our advertisers and sponsors for sharing their businesses with us and with the community. We look forward to serving all of you. With Gratitude!

SMART LANDSCAPING CHOICES DURING A DROUGHT San Diego has seen record rainfall over the past few months, however officials are warning we are still in drought status. You can still landscape in a savvy way and protect the environment by partnering with Eco Minded Solutions. They have some smart landscaping tips: If you want to reduce maintenance and water usage while improving 10

drainage and plant health, you may be interested in an Eco Minded Solutions Irrigation System for your home. Some of best plant options for dealing with the drought include plant materials that are native to the area and that stay compact. Tree varieties such as the Carolina laurel and the African sumac need very little water and are eye-catching specimens. Shrubs that work well in dry areas include agaves, dymondia and salvias. For added color in drought-touched areas, the California lilac and California poppy are excellent examples of native plants that thrive in low-water areas. Visiting Angels: Caring Everyday in Everyway OWNER RICK TVERDOCH SHARES HIS VIEWS ON HOME HEALTH CARE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENNY WERTH
“When I decided to get into home care, I wanted it to be different.” -- Rick Tverdoch
A
call for a Visiting Angel comes in at 3:22 a.m. Mrs. Cansto had a fall on her hallway rug and required the assistance of a caretaker after she’s discharged from the hospital. Owner of Visiting Angels, Rick Tverdoch, calms Mrs. Cansto’s daughter who is feverishly trying to book the next flight out to San Diego from Maine. Fortunately, Rick’s in the business of taking care of our loved ones, and he does so with the girth of Gibraltar and the grace of the angel Gabriel. He’s the man responsible for the deep sighs of relief from families who Jackie Wager and Rick Tverdoch in the Visiting Angels office

are assured that a capable ‘visiting angel’ will take care of everything. Mrs. Cansto’s Visiting Angel will be there waiting when she’s discharged from the hospital to transport her with care back home, and once home, the caregiver will be by her side to ensure she’s as comfortable as possible. With compassion and professionalism, the caregiver offers both physical and emotional support. And so begins another day in the business of caring for the most important people in our lives. It’s a ‘business’ that most people take for granted; that is until it is their loved one who is suddenly in desperate need of immediate help. For Rick, the visiting angels business was an opportunity he got involved in after his retirement. Quite simply, he found a life of retirement opened the doors to begin a business that comes straight from his heart. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” says a poster hanging inside his office. The wise words are from Ghandi and Rick follows them to perfection. Indeed, Rick knows the perils of caring for aging parents intimately. Many years ago he watched his own fa-

ther care for his ailing mother who, like many of us, was too proud to admit there was a problem, although she was suffering with dementia. He understands the tug-of-war that commences between the heart and mind when a loved one is really in need of continuing care, yet hasn’t admitted it to themselves. Luckily, Visiting Angels are on ‘standby’ to fly in and rescue people. The time often does arrive when long-term care becomes a necessity for an elderly relative. Simply walking in their own home poses a danger. Rugs that aren’t taped down, and even carpets that have changes in their pattern can become stumbling blocks. But who wants to confront the problem? It’s an oh-so-delicate dance of maintaining dignity while standing on firm ground that something has to happen. Our aging population is the fastest growing group in the country. And while this is encouraging news, it is also a testament to the fact that many of these people are going to need significant levels of care. Which
leads us to the next hurtle in an already sensitive time in the life of an aging loved one: should they move into an assisted living facility or should they stay at home with the assurance that an in-house caregiver can perform all the same duties? Most aging clients will tell you they’d much prefer to stay at home. Home, of course, is referred to as “home” for a reason. It’s a place they love, understand, and, most importantly, find to be their refuge and comfort. “If they can stay with their families in the surroundings they’ve been in, (that’s the best option)," Rick notes. "At many assisted living facilities, the environment isn’t social enough for residents to form good friendships. And the immobile will spend a lot time alone.” However, many families aren’t able to live with their parents. And that’s where the different levels of care from a visiting angel help tremendously. Some aging folks only require companionship and care for a four- to eight-hour period three times a week. They may only need a caregiver to help with driving and shopping responsibilities, but don’t require someone help them bathe. While there are others who require assistance with bathing, personal hygiene, dressing, driving, shopping, basic cooking and other normal functions of day-to-day life. Every client has a different situation, and visiting angels are there to cover everyone’s specific needs as best they can. “This is the caring business,” Rick says. To remove someone who is comfortable in their familiar environment and used to their normal routine is one of the most difficult decisions of many people’s lives. Thankfully, there are wonderful alternatives such as Visiting Angels. These angels give families the freedom to feel safe that their parents are in good hands. And the ease that comes with this knowledge is priceless. For more information call 858.345.1023 VisitingAngels.com

G
et your hats! Place your bets! And away we go! On the sunny afternoon of July 3, 1937, the original laid-back Californian himself, Bing Crosby, stood at a turnstile collecting tickets for his new seaside racetrack, Del Mar. Having been bitten by the racing bug, Crosby and a bunch of his Hollywood buddies (among them Pat O’Brien, Oliver Hardy and Gary Cooper) hatched the idea for a horse palace by the ocean where you could play all day, party all night and leave the cares of the world behind.
1937 Bing Crosby greets guests at front gate
The group’s first meeting took place at Warner Brothers studios in Burbank where the Del Mar Turf Club was formed. From the start, Hollywood fingerprints were all over this racetrack. That first day, more than 15,000 people came for a look. Word got around fast; there were more than 18,000 guests by the second afternoon. The Hollywood connection continued for decades at Del Mar (halted only by a three-year shutdown of racing during World War II) with Mickey Rooney, Ava Gardner, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Jimmy Durante. The Santa Fe Railroad launched a special racetrack train from Los Angeles to Del Mar that carried Hollywood stars and, at times, late-running horses. The party started on the train. If the train was late, the races were delayed. It became a Del Mar tradition for the fans in the grandstand to start cheering when they saw the train turn the bend just before the station. In 1938, Del Mar hosted the historic match race between Seabiscuit and the South American import Ligaroti. The race pitted Bing Crosby and Lin Howard against Lin’s father, Charles S. Howard, famous owner of Seabiscuit and a director of the Del Mar Turf Club. It was a $25,000 winner-take-all contest that drew 20,000 to the track and was heard coast-to-coast on the NBC radio network. At August 12, 1938, the end of a ferocious

battle that saw the horses trading head bobs and the riders trading whip slashes, “The Biscuit” won by a nose in 1:49, breaking the nine-furlong track record by an amazing four seconds. In recent times the track has become a fertile proving ground for many of the nation’s best horses and horsemen. Champions race at Del Mar each summer and they are trained by Hall of Fame conditioners with famous names like Ron McAnally, Richard Mandella, Neil Drysdale, Bob Baffert and Jerry Hollendorfer, and their worldclass jockey colony is led by stars like Hall of Famer Mike Smith along with Rafael Bejarano, Joe Talamo and Martin Garcia. In 1991, the track instituted its richest and most prestigious event ever: the $1Million Pacific Classic. The Grade I feature run at the classic American distance of a mile and one quarter quickly became one of the country’s top summer prizes, annually drawing many of the best horses in training. It seems like everything and everybody needs an overhaul over time and in 1993 the track opened with a fully refurbished grandstand, an $80 million project that took two years to complete while 20

racing continued. The “new” Del Mar retained the look and many of the touches of the old facility, but with more space – 550,000 square feet, to be exact – and more amenities. There are 4,700 more seats for a grand total of 14,300; 25 more bars for a grand total of 41; 20 more concession stands now totaling 36, and 750 pari-mutuel windows, up from 442. Del Mar is considered one of the jewels of the American racing scene. For the 2015 season, Del Mar has chosen to return to a natural dirt surface for its main track for reasons of safety keyed around two notable elements: First, the previous main track surface, synthetic Polytrack, had reached the end of its useful life, and, second, consultation with racing surface experts and strong encouragement from industry stakeholders such as the Thoroughbred Owners of California and California Thoroughbred Trainers. The well-regarded type of dirt (called “El Segundo Sand”) was installed over winter and is currently in use at both Santa Anita and Los Alamitos, meaning for the first time all major racing surfaces in Southern California will be uniform, allowing for the easiest and safest transitions for horses and riders.
The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (DMTC), a non-dividend paying corporation comprised of notable California owners and breeders, assumed operation of Del Mar through a 20-year lease with the state in 1970. That lease was subsequently renewed for another 20 years starting in 1990 and again in 2010. When the DMTC began operations, the track’s daily handle was $1,985,807 and its daily attendance averaged 9,684. Under the DMTC’s reign, those numbers have risen significantly and remained exceptional in handle and attendance. Of course, traditions evolve over time but one of the most reliable at Del Mar is that of wearing a hat on Opening Day. Back in the 1930s, people wore hats every day. Today, the track holds its annual “One and Only Truly Fabulous Hat Contest” on Opening Day, showcasing the most elaborate and eye-catching chapeaus. Even if they don’t participate in the contest, a majority of the crowd wears a hat on Opening Day. It’s just tradition. Del Mar made history once more in 2010 when Thoroughbred superstar Zenyatta won her third straight Clemente L. Hirsch Stakes and ran her perfect record to 18 for 18 in front of the 32,536 spirited fans. In 2011, Del Mar hosted the fifth match race in track history: the Battle of the Exes. The race pitted top jockeys (and former betrothed) Mike Smith and Chantal Sutherland against each other. Smith won. Celebrating 76 calendar years, Del Mar saw one of its most successful seasons in history in 2012, including an Opening Day that drew a record 47,339 racing fans. The 2014 summer meet finished with a total handle of $439,651,924 in all-sources bets for a daily average handle of $12,121,554 – making it California’s most successful race meet by far and continuing its run as one of the nation’s foremost Thoroughbred headquarters. Additionally in 2014, for the first time ever, Del Mar held a second fall racing meet, Bing Crosby Season. The closing of Hollywood Park allowed Del Mar to pick up fall dates and offer first-class racing for a second time. The Bing Crosby meet will be a new fall racing tradition featuring old school vibes along with big stakes races such as the Hollywood Derby, concerts, events and family activities. Opening Day for Bing Crosby Season is October 29, and runs through November 29, 2015. What’s remained constant since 1937 is the feeling that no matter who you are, one of the best places you can be a on a sunny summer afternoon is at Del Mar, watching some of the most gifted horses and horsemen in the world try to reach the finish line first. Here's to the 2015 Race Season, and Away they Go! All photos courtesy of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Eco Minded Solutions Drought Tolerant Landscapes DROUGHT TOLERANT LANDSCAPING IS SWEEPING DEL MAR KEEP THE BEAUTY AND REMAIN ECO FRIENDLY
D
rought tolerant landscapes are sweeping Del Mar as property owners are ripping up traditional lawns as they discover how much water, maintenance time, and money they can save with a redesign. 35 year residents Lynda and David Linaugh noticed this trend when they moved into their new home a year ago. Lynda and David wanted an eco friendly property without having to sacrifice having a beautiful and functional yard. “We moved into the house a year ago January and everything was absolutely perfect, but the yard was plain and all overgrown. It looked like it was in the mountains, had a lot of grass and a lot of trees.” The question was not whether to alter the backyard, but rather how would it be done? In efforts to create an entertainment space, the Linaugh family subsequently was also able to greatly reduce the water usage in their home. Current water restrictions, regulations, and fines in California was also a large motivation to transition the backyard into a drought tolerant landscape. “We don’t have to do anything, no mowing and don’t have to water. It’s a really easy backyard to maintain and very functional. We can have a large group of people here and handle it beautifully. There isn’t anything we don’t like about it. Didn’t even have a grill area, now we have a jacuzzi too.” The functional green space was not only achieved through the implementation of foundation planting, but also through the installation of

an artificial turf putting green. This turf replacement is a smart way to keep a green colored yard while also reducing water usage. To the Linaugh family it was very important to create a beautiful backyard that was functional and did not look like an Arizona desert. “I chose Eco Minded Solutions because they are young, up-to-date and follow along with the trends of young people. I did not want my space to look like it was made for a grandmother, I wanted people to walk in and think this is really cool”. Some of the finer details of the backyard redesign include: An outdoor kitchen and dining room surrounded by a raised frame full of drought tolerant plantings. Additional seating surrounds the BBQ island area and grill space. The extended patio now makes it easy to accommodate for large family gatherings. Lynda and David now have an outdoor paradise for family and friends to gather, play, and dine while still being environmentally conscious. Ask the Local Experts About Drought Tolerant Landscape Ideas Join other Del Mar homeowners in water conservation efforts by installing drought tolerant landscaping. There are many incentives just released throughout California! Now is the time to help the environment while upgrading your property value with a fresh landscape redesign. What is Floating? (In a Float Tank) F
loating in a sensory deprivation tank is quite possibly the most relaxing thing you can do for your body and mind! Just imagine floating in space . . . Although floating has been around for 60 years with a lot of research conducted, it is only now becoming popular. The process involves a large tank with a door. You step into the private tank that contains 11 inches of water and over 1,000 lbs of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) dissolved into the water which is kept at a constant 94 degrees (the same temperature as your skin) making it more buoyant than the Dead Sea and allowing you to float.
ELIMINATING SENSORY INPUT
The float tank is designed to virtually eliminate all sensory input. This allows the ‘constantly-make-sure-you’re-not-dying’ part of your brain to calm down, allowing the creative, relaxed part of your brain

to come out and play. Without the constant pressure of analyzing the world around you, your body lowers its cortisol levels, the main component of stress. Your brain also releases elevated levels of dopamine and endorphins, the neurotransmitters of happiness. Without old-man gravity pushing you down all the time, your spine lengthens an inch, chronic pain is relieved, and your muscles get to fully rest. Unlike lying on a mattress, lying in water allows blood to flow freely all throughout your body helping to heal old and new injuries. Even the magnesium-based Epsom salts used in the tank are good for you. They soften and replenish your skin, and help counteract the magnesium deficiency that most of us have due to depleted magnesium levels in our soil. HOW TO SELECT A FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL
THOMAS BLOTTENBERGER, CFP(R), CHFC(R)
O
nce you’ve decided to get serious about financial planning or investing, one of your next steps may be to seek professional assistance. Perhaps relatives or friends are recommending financial professionals to you. Maybe you know some financial professionals yourself. What is the smart way to choose financial planning advice and service? Consider these 10 ideas: FOCUS ON THE PERSON – You probably want a relationship that will continue for many years. This relationship usually is built on a personal level, not with companies. That’s why it’s best to set aside the hype and focus instead on the integrity, style, values and work habits of the individual. Attending seminars is a great way to compare financial professionals because it allows you to evaluate styles before you make a commitment. It’s also a good idea to obtain referrals from people you know and trust, ideally those who are clients of the same professional. FIND A GOOD FIT – Interview several professionals who have been recommended by friends and family – or perhaps those whom you’ve met at networking events or seminars. GO SLOW – Some of the best financial relationships are built gradually, so don’t feel pressured to make a commitment right away. Tell the professional what you need to accomplish, and don’t let yourself be pushed into complex processes. If you’re buying a financial product, evaluate how well the professional serves you after the first sale. Continuing service is a true test of a dedicated professional. LISTEN – In your first or second interview, most financial professionals will tell you how they work and what they do best. Sit back, make eye contact and listen carefully. You’ll learn that some professionals are comfortable recommending high-risk investments, while others are more conservative. EXPECT TO BE EDUCATED – Ask professionals how financial concepts work, and then evaluate how much clarity and care they put into their answers. The best financial professionals are good communicators and educators who don’t mind teaching their clients. Beware of professionals who brush off questions with flip answers. True professionals don’t bully clients with superior financial knowledge. They share it. DISCUSS FEES – Financial professionals can be paid in many ways – such as through commissions, hourly fees, or fees based on assets invested with the professional. Any method can work, provided you understand and are comfortable with it up front. Ask candidates
how they wish to be paid and approximately how much you should expect to pay them in the first year of your relationship. ASK FOR DOCUMENTS – Ask to see documents before choosing a financial specialist. If your financial professional acts as an Investment Advisor Representative providing investment advice, ask to see a sample plan and make sure you are comfortable with its depth and style. EVALUATE THE PROCESS – At some point early in your relationship, the financial specialist probably will make a specific recommendation to you, which can involve buying an investment or insurance product, participating in a planning analysis, or opening a brokerage account. Before accepting or rejecting the recommendation, ask yourself if the financial professional learned enough about you and your needs to make an appropriate recommendation at that point. If a recommendation comes too fast, it’s a sign that the financial professional is focusing on his or her needs more than yours. Credentials and background – Many financial specialists have college degrees, and many also have earned professional designations such as CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®), Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) or Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®). Once you are comfortable with a financial professional’s style and methods and have checked out personal recommendations, consider degrees and designations as the “icing on the cake.” Remember your financial professional’s role – Your financial professional isn’t your parent, buddy or psychiatrist – and he or she won’t set strict rules on how you can invest or cheer you up when your investments are dropping. Your financial professional will prove most valuable by listening to your needs, making clear recommendations, helping you avoid mistakes, and always telling you the truth. When financial professionals exaggerate their skills or promise success, consider that a red flag. The best financial professionals are helpful and dedicated people who, whenever you have a serious need or question, will make time to address it. Even if you aren’t their wealthiest client, they’ll recognize that your financial goals are very important. They won’t make investing or planning difficult for you. At every opportunity, they will try to simplify your life without glossing over difficult decisions or unpleasant results. A good financial specialist will remind you that you are in charge of achieving your own goals, and you can do that best when you have the benefit of accurate information, objective analysis, and clear recommendations. he soul of Mike Orenich is behind every photo he’s captured. Through his eyes we are allowed a glimpse into the image he was compelled to document, a picture within a frame that time cannot fade. A man indigenous to remote western Mongolia huddled in fur with eagles at his side. A woman in Cuba in vivid contemplation. A 1956 Chevrolet in all its rarity. The pictures captivate us; we are entranced and captured by these stories which have no beginning or end. If Mike’s photos could speak, they would tell incredible tales. He’s permeated the boundaries of some of the most far-reaching places in the world, traveled into pockets of history that are still encapsulated on the streets of Cuba. It’s there that he gazed at a woman on her patio in such deep thought that it enraptured him. And with his creative ingenuity, he was able to bring the depth in her eyes to a photo that demands the beat of our hearts. “The world is about people, someone has to take sight and present them to the young and the old," he says. "Sometimes we don’t even realize other cultures exist.” Mike emanates the essence of a photographer. He’s like a man possessed once he’s behind the camera, it’s there that he finally finds the freedom to be completely in the moment. And Mike doesn’t want to impede on ours; he doesn’t use titles on his photos, for to do so would be to give us a label we didn’t create. It would be to put preconceived notions into our minds, and that would steal the very freedom he so cherishes in every remote corner on the globe. Fair Trade Decor Captivates Del Mar GLOBAL OUTREACH, LOCALLY ARTICLE JENNY WERTH | PHOTOGRAPHY NOLA SCHODER
D
eep in South Africa, a campfire’s red and yellow flames illuminate natives’ faces as they create colorful baskets made out of telephone wires. These unassuming telephone wires represent the simple security every family seeks: food, water, shelter and maybe even some security for tomorrow. Consequently, up to 600 indigenous artisans concentrate while manipulating pliable wires to produce beautifully woven baskets. At the same time, many worlds away deep in Del Mar, residents and tourist alike are admiring these unique multi-colored baskets in a variety of sizes and patterns inside Fair Trade Décor. Everyone’s international trip begins the moment they step into the remarkable Fair Trade, only there aren’t any passport requirements to travel into this extraordinary store. Luckily for everyone on Camino Del Mar, an adventure for all the senses transports them into many inaccessible corners of the world. Obscure destinations in countries such as Kenya, India, Peru, Nicaragua and South Africa suddenly gain recognition as people scrutinize each province's original works of artistry. Among the beautiful items are gorgeous shawls, impeccably made recycled glass jewelry, darling children’s shoes, stationary, plates, pillows and organic cotton finger puppets. Owner’s Betsy and Jude Paganelli represent the teeny population of Fair Trade store owners who followed their hearts and opened a store that would offer one-of-a-kind items from countries around the world that support the artisans for their exclusive crafts. If a win/win ever existed, it’s within the strict rules governed by the Fair Trade Federation’s (FTF) laws. The FTF ensures each Fair Trade store owner adheres to their stringent principles that have been put in place to protect the artisans’ interests while promoting the sale of their creations. Items are sold at fair prices while supporting natives who would otherwise not have the opportunity to share their unique crafts with the world. Often times, the FTF will even build entire communities in towns that never had electricity so their workers may have adequate living environments along with fair wages. “To know in my heart I’m doing something right and good, that’s a happy world right there,” Betsy explains. Indeed, it’s a humble world that allows both the artist and the one purchasing the art to hold hands even though their lives are thousands of miles apart. Fair Trade Décor is located at 1412 Camino Del Mar. FairTradeDecor.com

Birds on a Wire WORDS KENDRA MATHEWSON
O
ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like the birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals at each other's homes, playing cards as couples, we’d

pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her miniCooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness. Through words, stories, shared experiences and common interests, we find inspiration to create our communities, which is where we call, "home." My friend’s keen observations became the main theme of a series that has become her signature. The beauty of her Birds on a Wire series, and her ref lections on community, have inspired me to embrace and celebrate more the important place it has in our lives. We live in such an individualistic society that our personal empowerment sometimes overshadows the significance of
our need for each other. Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Because the people are who ignite an idea, imagine a future, share an event, take the bull by the horns, see a need a fill it, spread the word about a new business, open their home to new families, bring a meal when there’s an illness, invest in a neighbor or believe in a student, give witness to struggles and celebrate successes. This magazine is your “wire.” Let us pause to read the stories that have been inspired by our home, our community, to drink in the beautiful photographs that paint the story of us. Email your editor and publisher, or better yet reach out and enjoy a cup of coffee together. Let us stop here in the pages of our publication each month and celebrate like birds on a wire, before we fly off back to our busy lives. You inspire us.
