Octoberfest in Del Mar. Dear Readers,

OCTOBER 2015 publisher

Happy October, Del Mar! Welcome to this month's issue of Del Mar Lifestyle. October is filled with so many joys: pumpkin spice lattes, hayrides, Halloween parties for kids and adults alike and well, surf contests! Swami's Surfing Association celebrates its 51st Anniversary this year and all of North County is bound to get out and have a look. As we move into October there is so much going on around town to celebrate the autumn season – where do we begin? We have the Del Mar Village Taste & Art Stroll at the beginning of this month with our friends "Max and Luther" checking out the dog stroll and reporting back. In this month's issue of Del Mar Lifestyle we celebrate Lobster Season, which starts on Oct. 3. Local resident Mitchell Miller shares tips and tricks and the labor of love that goes into finding the perfect Spiny Lobster. We are also excited to share health and wellness for our tiniest residents and our adult readers.

Max and Luther

DEL MAR ART STROLL THROUGH A PUP'S EYES My name is Luther and I'm a dog. My pal Max and I are so excited that the Del Mar Art Stroll is coming up soon. We had so much fun last year! The Del Mar Art Stoll will take place in downtown Del Mar on October 4th from 9-4. This event features 100 local and regional artists, restaurant tastings and live music. Max and I are especially interested in the restaurant tastings. If you happen to see a large bulldog and a feisty puggle staring at your food, please feel free to share the wealth… As Del Mar is so dog friendly, there is a special section of the event devoted to dogs. The dog stroll will feature booths with tons of dog treats, specialty pet products and there will even be some fun dog contests. One of the great things about this event is the opportunity for us to get together with our local dog friends and make new ones too. I personally like to plant myself in the middle of everything so people (and their dogs) have to stop and meet me. It is hard to ignore a 105-pound bulldog. Max and I will be spending the day at Dexter’s Deli, so be sure to stop by and say hi. If you are looking for other dog activities in Del Mar, be sure to check out the Halloween Pet Parade at Powerhouse Park on Sunday, Oct. 25. Max and I are hoping to win the costume contest this year! See you there, everyone!

ARTICLE MICHELE SALDANA PHOTOGRAPHY PATTY BRUTLAG

YOUR BOOK IS COMING OUT ON PRENATAL NUTRITION, HOW TO CONCEIVE NATURALLY AND HAVE A HEALTHY PREGNANCY AFTER 30. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BOOK?

I’m excited to share it! The book is fresh and different in that it takes a 5-trimester approach to pregnancy with preconception being the first trimester. In the preconception phase, we lay out a 12-week plan to cleanse and build the body to prepare it to conceive naturally. Because this book was born out of working with women in their late 30s and early 40s who had trouble conceiving, the preconception portion of the book allays fears of “the biological clock” with information on functional lab work you can run to get to the root of 12

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2015

fertility issues (or just to prep your body before you try to conceive) in a way mainstream medicine doesn’t approach. No lab work is required, but we find it’s helpful for those who’d like to troubleshoot. The preconception chapter – which is for both mom and dad – helps to turn over the genetic code in the gut-microbiome, which is a wonderful way to lay a foundation for exceptional health in Mom, as well as to contribute to your child’s health in their adult life and even to your grandchildren’s health. It’s an exciting new field called epigenetics. Next, we go into the three trimesters of pregnancy where we lay out which part of Baby is forming and growing, and which foods and nutrients Mom needs to focus on eating to assist that process. This is called fetal programming. Throughout the entire book, we provide our rock star arsenal of the top quality nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, dietary tips, recipes and holistic tools to keep Mom happy and balanced. Our last trimester, or “5th trimester” is the 3-month postpartum period. What a new mom does in the first 12 weeks post-delivery is crucial to help her hormones balance fast, so she can feel good and enjoy bonding with her newborn. We give diet, supplement and lifestyle suggestions that have worked wonders for our clients in this chapter, along with an avante garde yet incredibly powerful balancing tool. HOW DID THIS BOOK COME ABOUT?

It happened very organically. In my nutrition practice, I get clinical with functional lab work to dig for a root cause in lieu of addressing individual symptoms. I believe in using food as medicine wherever possible, as well as creating balance in life and peace in the heart by addressing mental and emotional process concurrently with physical health. This combination of practice philosophy has helped thousands of people in all kinds of health situations in my decade of practice. About 4 years ago, I started getting women coming to me in their late 30s and early 40s who were struggling with infertility. At the time it wasn’t my specialty, but they liked my approach and we worked side-by-side as health detectives.

Before I knew it, they all started getting pregnant, even the toughest cases! The case that tipped me over the edge was a 42-year old woman who had dealt with a decade of physical trauma, chemical and environmental sensitivities, and an aggressive gut imbalance. She had tried to get pregnant for 6 years, including 6 rounds of IVF, to no avail. After working together and applying the philosophy in our book, she was able to get pregnant after 4 months of hard work. Today she is 46 and has two healthy children! Her full story is so inspiring and is in our book. At the same time, my dear friend, gifted homeopath and co-author, Willow Buckley and her husband were preparing to conceive their first child with a 6-month preconception detox. Willow is also a doula, so we started talking about what I was experiencing in my practice, what she was doing to prep to conceive and what her clients were experiencing. We said we wished there was a comprehensive guide that helped with both conception and every week of pregnancy and since there wasn’t, we decided to write it, using her first pregnancy as our “case study.” WHAT ELSE ARE YOU WORKING ON?

What I feel is my greatest life’s work to date – a cutting edge gut healing and rejuvenation program where I went from working oneon-one with clients to heal chronic digestive and autoimmune issues (as well as using this process to prep women for conception) to working with thousands of people at the same time with just as high of a success rate as if I was working with them privately. We are now working with people from all over the world with great success and it gives me great joy and pride to guide this process of helping others get their health and life back. We plan to run clinical trials on this Gut Thrive in 5 process I’ve created so that this work can spread into mainstream medicine.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE A MOM TO BE?

Trust your body and the process and learn how to receive. In the early stages of preconception and pregnancy relaxing, trusting your body and trusting the process is a tall order, but it’s essential and transformative to do what is within your power to do and to let go of the things you cannot control, all the while believing in the power your body has to create new life. In our postpartum chapter, Willow talks about learning to receive which includes setting up how you want the first two to four weeks after your baby is born to go – having meals delivered to you, having visitors on your schedule (not theirs), and truly taking care of yourself and asking for what you need. Studies show accepting help, meals, and whatever else you need offers a greater sense of well being, cuts down on being overwhelmed and allows a new mom to enjoy the postpartum period while warding off isolation. It truly takes a village.

It's Lobster Season

Water & Woods

ARTICLE MITCHELL MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY NOLA SCHODER

L

obster season is a time to meet your neighbors! Those with fresh caught local lobster make friends in driveways and kitchens. When midnight strikes, the flippers go on and masks hit the dark water. The season opens 12 a.m. on the Saturday preceding the first Wednesday in October. This year, that falls on Oct. 3, 2015. Dedicated lobster divers show up on the Friday night before the opener with big stories from years past. The Del Mar dive community is small, and Del Mar is difficult to dive in bad conditions. When visibility allows, one great dive lies directly out from Powerhouse Park. If Del Mar's visibility is bad, San Diego's shoreline has other great places to dive. Look for rock, eel grass – and most importantly, crevices. Deep “V”s often hold large “bugs” (lobsters). Some lobster seasons are better than others. Two seasons ago was tough. According to the California Department Fish and Wildlife (DFW), an average of 5.5 lobsters per lobster card were taken. Some local divers were upset at North County dredging projects that left visibility poor. The DFW reported 7.5 lobsters taken per lobster card last year – nothing compared to the 13 lobsters taken per card in the 2012 to 2013 season. This year is predicted to bring warm water temperatures and currents from the South with El Niño. Equipment required to free-dive for lobster is basic: fins, wetsuit, mask, snorkel, weight belt, gloves, dive bag and measuring device. Bring a light for night dives. High quality dive lights cast sharp, bright light and have a long battery life. Making 10+ feet dives is not difficult with hand-me-down boogie board fins. Underwater life is mostly asleep at night, providing the adventurer encounters with many creatures that aren't out during daytime, including

14

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2015

sculpins, eels, horn sharks, and octopuses. Big bugs, having lived through a few lobster seasons, are wary of anyone’s spotlight and scoot backward into the closest hole. According to the DFW, it takes a lobster seven to 11 years to reach a legal size of 3.25 inches across the carapace (measured from behind the eyes to the end of the shell before the beginning of the tail). The best way to pluck a bug off the rocks is to push the lobster down onto the rock and hold on tightly! Wait for the wave surge to pass before making your thrust. If the lobster doesn't want to come out, try shining a light into its eyes from one direction while sliding a hand behind from the other. One touch of the antennae and it’s all over. The use of “tickle sticks” or hooked devices isn't allowed in California. Diving for lobster is highly regulated by the DFW. Game wardens are often seen roaming the bluffs, equipped with night vision technology. The basic rules are that a lobster diver must have purchased a fishing license and have properly completed a lobster report card prior to diving. He or she must have a measuring tool that measures exactly 3.25 inches in possession while harvesting lobster. Lobsters must be kept whole until ready for consumption. Make sure not to pull out shorts (even by a millimeter). Pursuant to DFW regulations, the recreational lobsterman may only have seven lobsters in the bag, fridge or anywhere else in their possession at any time. Many lobster divers enjoy being generous with their catch, sharing with friends and neighbors when they reach their limit. Meet someone new this lobster season! Go to the beach on opening night, or bump into a neighbor and end up with a lobster in hand.

n October of 1810, 40,000 citizens of Bavaria, Germany, gathered for the royal wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. For 16 days the guests relished in the festivities, dancing, horse races, and, of course, drinking. The popularity of the event inspired a reprise the following year, and again in 1812. Consequently, Oktoberfest was born. While the traditional Oktoberfest began over 200 years ago, the title “Oktoberfest” has become synonymous with brewing beer and, more prominently, its consumption. The present day festival draws over 6 million devotees to the holy beer grounds and commences with the ritual tapping of the first keg, offering thirsty souls a great excuse to savor frothy suds at the hint of autumn. Here’s a look at some of North County’s breweries and beer bars.

Inflation: The Great Retirement “Robber” ARTICLE THOMAS BLOTTENBERGER CFP (R) CHFC(R) | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

ost people have a basic understanding of how inflation works. When the prices of goods and services rise, your money doesn’t stretch as far. During your working years, if you’re receiving regular pay increases, it can be easy to overlook inflation’s overall impact on your bottom line because those raises can help to offset the effects of rising prices.

22

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2015

But what happens when you take a long-term view of inflation? You’ll notice that the prices of everyday goods have significantly increased over the years. Take a look at this inflation graph, which tracks inflation for the 10-year period from 2005 through 2015. The graph of inflation rates displays annual rates from 2005 – 2015. Rates of inflation are calculated using the Current Consumer Price Index

published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). For the most recent monthly data (12-month based) is used in the chart and graph. Source: UsInflationCalculator.com In the chart above, price changes are measured by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI). The CPI provides an estimate of a price change between two periods of time for a sampling of goods people buy for day-to-day living. It represents the degree to which prices change between these two points of time. (Interestingly, it does not measure the change in prices of food or energy.) CAN YOUR RETIREMENT INCOME DO TWO IMPORTANT THINGS?

Once you’re retired, inflation can pose a big threat to your budget, since most people are only taught how to live on a fixed income. When you’ve left the workforce, your retirement income will need to do two important things: last for your lifetime and fully cover your expenses during retirement. But here’s why you may find it difficult for your retirement income to achieve both of these goals: Social Security is designed to last for your lifetime and can provide a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), but this adjustment is not guaranteed to happen each year – for example, there was no COLA in both 2010 and 2011. (The Social Security Administration uses the CPI-W to help determine the amount of any COLA that is granted to Social Security recipients.[1]) The longevity of your other retirement income sources will depend on how much your investments earn (investment earnings can be unpredictable and your investments may lose value) – and the amount of money you withdraw from your retirement account(s) each year. (Too high of a withdrawal rate may mean you could run out of money during your lifetime.) CREATING YOUR RETIREMENT INCOME STRATEGY TODAY

There are several steps you can take to help yourself counteract the effects of inflation – and help you to ensure that your retirement income will last. These include: Developing a diversified investment strategy by investing some of your assets into a mix of stocks (“equities”) and fixed income funds. Over the long term, equities have tended to outpace inflation (more so than fixed income investments), but stocks tend to have a higher level of investment risk than fixed income investments, such as bonds. Floating Away Anxiety, Depression and Fear ARTICLE GLENN STOKOE Excerpt from “The Book of Floating” / Michael Hutchison

W

e have all experienced one or more symptoms associated with anxiety . . . pounding heart, feelings of loss of control, butterf lies in the stomach, irritability, restlessness, fear. In many cases anxiety is an appropriate response to a specific threat. But when it spirals out of control into panic, or is not associated with a specific cause or object and becomes a phobia, anxiety is a life-disrupting, debilitating illness. Going into a f loat tank has a dramatic effect on the biochemicals associated with anxiety and depression. This makes sense, since the place where external events – such as divorce or an airplane f light – are translated into physiological / internal events is in the visceral brain, particularly through the actions of the hypothalamus and pituitary; and it is in exactly that part of the brain that the experience and sensation of f loating in an f loat tank has its most direct inf luence. 24

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2015

Numerous controlled studies of the physiological effects of floating have proven conclusively that it reduces muscular tension, blood pressure, heart rate and pulse (e.g. O’Leary and Heilbronner; Stanley, Francis, and Berres, Belden and Jacobs). In a one-year statistical study, Belden and Jacobs found that the float tank was impressive in reducing anxiety: in all subjects, floating reduced intensity of anxiety by 74 percent, frequency of anxiety by 65 percent, psychophysiological symptoms by 65 percent. There are already many mental health professionals in the U.S. and Canada who rely on the float tank as a therapeutic tool, either by integrating it directly into the therapeutic process or by recommending it to patients as an adjunct to therapy. For more information about floating go to FloatNorthCounty.com or call 858.925.6069.

Wellness Starts with You MEET DR. ARNOLD KREMER AND DR. SANJAY GHOSH

Y

ou go to the doctor when you’re sick, but what about to stay healthy? Del Mar Integrated Medicine, a wellness clinic open since May of last year, wants to keep you in top condition so you can live your best life. “The whole concept that I had in mind Arnold Kremer when I opened this clinic was to give people an opportunity to learn how to be healthy,” says Dr. Arnold Kremer, who founded the clinic after many years as an emergency room doctor. “When I became a physician, all they ever told me was how to treat disease. And I had to figure out on my own, ‘Well, what does it take to be healthy?’” He started with himself: as a junior in medical school he was a pack-a-day smoker and 40 pounds overweight. He quit smoking, bought himself a jogging suit and worked up to running 10 miles daily, and educated himself on nutrition and exercise. Kremer practices general medicine, and offers services that wouldn’t be found in a conventional doctor’s office, such as bio-identical hormone replacement therapy and osteopathic manipulative treatment. The clinic also offers several medical spa services such as Botox, lasers, microdermabrasion and peels. Often, patients who are on multiple medications come in and Kremer works to reduce or eliminate them by finding natural alternatives--often with the help of his in-house clinical nutritionist, life coach, acupuncturist and naturopathic physician. “We have a team using multiple disciplines to get people to understand how to be healthy,” says Kremer, who added that he would like to add an endocrinologist. Dr. Sanjay Ghosh showed promise early. He received awards in math and science in high school, and attended the honors college on scholarship at the University of Michigan. After a degree in cellular and molecular biology and graduating phi beta kappa and magna cum laude, he attended the University Sanjay Ghosh of Michigan medical school, followed by a neurosurgery program at USC. He also received specialized training in traumatic brain and spinal injuries and management of deep-seated brain tumors. Those early signs proved true. Ghosh is a rock star in his field: U.S. News and World Report named him a top doctor, and he has been voted by his peers a top neurosurgeon in San Diego Magazine. Sometimes patients travel to see Ghosh, often via word-of-mouth from happy patients. “I’ll operate on somebody here in San Diego, and they’ll have relatives in Oregon or New Mexico or wherever, and they’re having a similar problem,” Ghosh says. “My grateful patients have been the greatest source of referrals.” In practice in San Diego for 14 years, Ghosh works at the Senta Clinic, which specializes in disorders of the brain, spine and skull base, and he does surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. He has had many patients from Del Mar, even treating a rider from the Del Mar racetrack who had badly fractured his spine. “I was able to rebuild his back and get him walking again,” Ghosh says. Ghosh is also happily married to Kami Joy Ghosh, and they have three children. He is also an animal lover with three dogs and fosters animals for the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter. REAL TALK SAN DIEGO AND DEL MAR LIFESTYLE TEAM UP TO CELEBRATE NORTH COUNTY BUSINESSES

In a world where we now communicate in 140 characters or less, many entrepreneurs and business owners struggle to explain their unique value proposition to consumers. If you’ve only got a few seconds to capture someone’s attention, how can you demonstrate the merits of your product or service? Real Talk San Diego is an entrepreneur’s soapbox that overcomes the challenges brought about by today’s “new media.” The radio show airs weekdays on ESPN 1700AM with a focus on “The Business of Life in America’s Finest City.” On-air personalities and guests alike include entrepreneurs, business owners, executives and community leaders who are having a positive impact on San Diego. Executive Producer Brett Ward came up with the concept after sponsoring a radio show for one of his other companies. “I saw an opportunity to shift a paradigm because radio has always been about listenership and demographics. Instead of selling advertisements, we give our guests a voice and an audience.” Real Talk empowers business leaders by providing a unique platform to tell their story-- but it doesn’t end with the listening audience. The show connects people and fosters new business relationships that would have been unlikely otherwise. “It’s like matchmaking in a sense. The show is an excellent tool to create new and enhance existing relationships,” continued Ward. “I see it happen all the time- complete strangers exchange cards during a show and a new business relationship is formed.” What started as five hours of airtime on the local ESPN affiliate each week has tripled to 15 hours, just one year later. The show is

also streamed live on the Real Talk website, while podcasts and highlight videos are produced for each guest. This content provides tremendous ongoing value because it can be repurposed and used countless ways long after the broadcast. Radio advertising typically requires a lot of capital and takes a long time to generate results. “We leverage new media and provide tangible benefits by connecting people to people, an advantage that traditional radio simply does not provide. We want you to get to know the person behind the business. It’s a powerful concept that simply can’t be done with a 30 second advertisement,” Ward added. If you know a local entrepreneur or business leader whose story should be featured, please visit RealTalkSanDiego.com and complete the interest form.

No Tricks to Treating the Kids to Fall Fun SIMPLE CRAFTS AND COSTUMES, PLUS A SAMPLE OF LOCAL AUTUMN EVENTS ARTICLE SHEILA WRIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Chocolate Spiders Your kids can transform round chocolates into spiders by adhering M&M eyes to the chocolate “body” with icing then breaking curvy pieces off pretzels for legs; Use drops of melted chocolate to attach them to the cup. Banana Ghosts Cut a peeled banana in half and have your kids lightly coat it with lemon juice (to prevent browning). Press chocolate chips into the tops of the bananas for the faces. Serve right away or frozen. CUTE CRAFTS

Paper Strip Pumpkin Cut orange construction paper for little ones or let them tear it into 2-inch strips. Older kids can use craft scissors and patterned scrapbooking paper. Stack the strips and punch holes in each end. Thread a chenille stem or twine through the holes, and secure the strips into a “C”. Spread the strips into a pumpkin shape. Feet Ghosts Help your child dip his foot into white paint and press it onto black cardstock. When dry, he can use a marker to draw the ghost’s face. Luminaires Encourage your kids repurpose used jars and gather leaves or cut autumn shapes from tissue paper. Adhere them to the jar with paper mâché glue. Light it with a battery-powered votive. SIMPLE COSTUMES

Shark Simple cutting and gluing (by your kids or with your help) turns a hoodie into a shark. Cut a white felt strip into teeth, and glue it to the hem of the hood. Cut two black felt circles for eyes and glue one on each side of the hood. Cut foam into a fin and attach to the back of the hoodie. Mermaid Convert a pencil skirt into a mermaid tail. Have your child draw scales on the skirt with glitter glue. For the tailfin, use fabric glue to attach a tutu to the hem. Mummy Dress your child in a white fitted top and pants. Wrap her arms and torso then legs and hips with gauze bandage, securing with fabric glue. (Keep the top and bottom wraps separate for stress-less restroom breaks). Wrap a light colored beanie in gauze to cover her head. HALLOWEEN AND AUTUMN EVENTS

SPOOKY SNACKS

Ghost Cookies Help your child coat both sides of a Nutter Butter cookie with melted white chocolate. Place on waxed paper and press chocolate chips into the coated cookie to make the face. 28

Parting Thoughts

Uncommon Sensibilities ARTICLE EMILY VIZZO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

ost of the year we are our ordinary selves, living out the beauty and adventure of each common day as it passes. At the end of October though, we get the chance to reach into the dark shelves of our imaginations and try out our uncommon self. Costumes are such strange and interesting things, aren’t they? I can remember some of my childhood costumes: over the years I was a Care Bear, a witch, a princess, a punk rocker. Whether I was wearing bright blue eyeshadow or a steep black hat, I can remember a shock of excitement and fear as I peered into the mirror. Who was that strange girl peering back at me? Was I still myself? In high school one year, my friends and I dressed as 1940s glamour girls, with tailored dresses from the downtown thrift stores, scarves tied smartly around our throats, and round, oversize sunglasses. Accustomed to tearing around campus in soft cutoffs and comfy flip-flops, I remember teetering down the stairs from my English class, trying to balance my three-ring binder, trigonometry textbook, and three-inch heels as throngs of costumed peers surged around me in the mellow October sunshine. My grandparents married on Halloween, in Ohio, long ago. In their wedding photo my grandmother Aggie is tall and slender, with a thoughtful look on her face and a long, formal white gown. My grandfather Richard is leaning toward her slightly, one hand at her back, wearing a dark suit and simple boutonniere. She is holding a bouquet leafy with fern springs, budded in basic roses. His polished shoe is slightly stepping on the elegant train of her dress. Later they would move to California to raise their four sons, including my father, the youngest. My grandparents would have surely been shocked at some of the costumes I’ve worn on Halloween. That's how it is with

34

Del Mar Lifestyle | October 2015

grandparents – but that’s part of Halloween’s nighttime wilderness, isn’t it? We've all been there. Shocking each other, scaring each other, the sharp adrenaline zipline with the plastic-wrapped sugar. Peering behind the masks and make-up: Is that you? we ask each other at Halloween. I almost didn’t recognize you. And a reminder that time passes. Last year’s costumes never seem to matter very much. Last year’s pumpkin never seems as perfect as this year’s pumpkin, though the air be dark and pungent with their burning pulp. Last year’s trick-or-treaters might be long forgotten, but this year’s kids are always the cutest. Infants dressed as bears and bunnies. A thousand princesses and pirates. Children learning that the world is a mysterious and generous place. I've spent one Halloween outside the United States. An undergrad at UCSD, I was living in Concepción, Chile, for a semester and taking classes at the university there. Nobody was dressed up in costume, although my friend Andrea and I did attend a nighttime fútbol game where the air was thick with smoke from fireworks, and the stadium rang with chants and screaming matches between the rival fans. Our night ended early, and I took the elevator to the third floor where I was living with a Chilean family. In my little room, sitting on my lumpy twin bed, I opened a shoebox my mother had mailed me from the United States. Inside, six carefully wrapped, homemade caramel popcorn balls my mother had made in her yellow-painted kitchen back in California. I unwrapped one of the popcorn balls and walked to my window, where I could see my clothes still drying on the line and watch people in the streets below. The caramel was thin and sweet. It was, I knew, my grandmother's recipe.
