elcome to September's issue of Del Mar Lifestyle! What a fantastic summer we have had this year. The fair tickled our taste buds and enlightened our senses. The races kept us on our toes, and we were on the edge of our seats when American Pharaoh trotted into Del Mar. We enjoyed late dinners at Café Secret, chatting with the owners about their fresh Peruvian fare, and walked down to the beach to watch the sun sink into the ocean late into the evening. The fun's not over yet. In fact, it has only just begun as we bring you Del Mar Lifestyle's September issue, featuring concerts, music, poetry, animal lovers and celebration. In September, our theme is “Turn Over a New Leaf” as we move into a new season. September traditionally has a back-toschool focus, but we decided that there is no reason why kids should have all the fun. This issue embraces lifelong learning and the joy of trying out new hobbies, acquiring new information, and learning new skills. We are excited to feature an interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rae Armantrout just as she retires from the University of California, San Diego and launches a brand-new collection. We also get up close with musicians One Drop, one of San Diego's most beloved reggae bands, and the sensual Anna Danes, jazz singer and performer in the famous Jazz on Cedros series. (We got them to spill a few tips on writing and performing music!) Don't forget – KAABOO will be in town this month and we are excited to welcome them! Del Mar welcomes this music experience to our hometown, and all of the musical guests that accompany this festival, with open arms and ears. Also, don't forget our featured local business, Camp Run A Mutt; we meet the owners personally as they share their business with Del Mar. We'll also experience ARTS, a Reason to Survive, and The Stars Align concert. Hopefully our articles and photos inspire you to try learning something new this fall. Let us know how it goes! The Kaumama Family Collective has been crafting jewelry in the Agadez, Niger, area for 25 generations and are known for high-quality artwork involving silver, ebony and semi precious stones. The Tuereg believe that jewelers have special powers because they must handle fire in order to make the jewelry. CRUDO TO OPEN IN OCTOBER The Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch will open a new permutation of the nationally acclaimed Fig & Olive Restaurants under the stewardship of Executive Chef Pascal Lorange, whose restaurant repertoire includes Michelin-starred venues around the world. Slated for an October opening, this Mediterranean Riviera-style eatery will feature brunch, lunch and dinner items. The Del Mar Times reports that Lorange, one-time private chef for Julio Iglesias, has also created meals for the Clintons, Oscar de la Renta and President Obama. Be on the lookout for raw plates, including sashimi and carpaccio, as well as seafood en papillote and homemade pastas. Bava wrote the book after traveling around the United States interviewing hundreds of Baby Boomers from all walks of life and socioeconomic classes. CARMEL VALLEY COMMUNITY PLANNING BOARD PLANS FOR CLEANER SKIES Congrats to members of the Carmel Valley Community Planning Board for their earth-minded vision of beautiful skies in North County. San Diego’s draft Climate Action Plan includes the goals of reducing greenhouse gases by 50 percent by 2035, according to the Del Mar Times. The plan involves five main strategies to reduce greenhouse gases: incorporate energy efficient and water efficient buildings, focus on clean and renewable energy, encourage bicycling, walking, and public transit, moving toward zero waste, and boost climate resiliency. My name is Max and I am a 3-year-old Puggle. I am a 3-year veteran of Camp Runa-Mutt, and am excited to share my experiences at doggie daycare with you. First of all, I should explain that I am one of those dogs that has separation anxiety and does not like to be left alone! This was apparent early in my puppyhood and let me tell you a howling Puggle is not an experience for the faint of heart. My mom conducted an exhaustive search of the doggie daycare options in San Diego. It took three tries before she found Camp Run-a-Mutt. I love to hang there with my best bud Luther! The best part of camp, according to my mom, is that I am so happy and tired when I get home. Apparently, humans sometimes need a break from us dogs … So if you are looking for a doggie daycare, I highly recommend Camp Run-a-Mutt.

hoosing a facility to care for your pet is an important decision, but Del Mar residents don’t need to look any further than Camp Run-a-Mutt, owned by cousins Karen and Alisha Posner. “We’re really excited that we’re family-owned and woman-owned,” says Karen. Camp Run-a-Mutt provides cage-free day care and overnight boarding to dogs of all breeds and sizes. Your canine friend will enjoy luxury amenities: more than 15,000 square feet of play area that includes bridges and ramps, a splash pond to cool down when the weather gets warm, and even a bubble machine. For overnight stays, dogs stay in a large playroom and can even watch television. A human always spends the night with the dogs, and everyone sleeps together, pack-style, after a day of playing together. “We actually treat them like they’re our own dogs,” says Karen. “We sleep next to them at night. The first time that a dog comes to camp, they take a temperament test. We take them into a 12

small yard, let them sniff around and get comfortable, then we’ll slowly introduce one dog at a time until there are about five or six dogs in the yard. We’re looking for any aggressive behavior or extreme timidness, and if we don’t see any sign, we test them in our larger yard to see how they do with different types of dogs, big and small. I think that the test is very important because we want a safe environment for our dogs.” Another aspect of Camp Run-a-Mutt is the Muttcams, which enable dog owners to see their dog in real time online. The facility also includes an event space that is rented out for obedience classes, done in partnership with Pawtopia. Recent Meetups have included English bulldogs, doodles and huskies. The Posners also hope to open a doggie boutique and hire a groomer in the future. “We’ve even talked about doing dog yoga and Pilates classes,” Alisha says. ehind the scenes at the Mandeville Auditorium at UCSD, more than 600 young dancers from the Del Mar, Carmel Valley and surrounding areas are queuing up stage right, racing through the changing rooms to dress for their next performance or laughing with their dance-mates – all while enjoying their recital day. Everyone is suitably dressed for their routine, from elegant ballet tutus with pointe shoes to “mouse” costumes, and each adorned with a confident smile when they hit the stage. This is the live performance presented by the Royal Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) that is located in a brand new 15,000-square-foot studio in Sorrento Valley. This state-of-theart facility offers a home to learn and develop dance skills as well as self-assurance and life skills. The open, bright and modern facility is equally as welcoming as Owner and Director Francine Garton. Her grin and warmth create a friendly, family-like atmosphere as she flits from room to room acknowledging and engaging each student, instructor and parent. Her proper British accent gives the Royal Academy a truly elegant touch. Garton, hailing from Liverpool, England, completed her training and became a qualified teacher at the prestigious Northern Ballet College in Manchester, a leader in world-class dance known for passionate story-telling and a mastery of classical dance technique. 14

A professional dancer for several years, Garton soon began teaching. Some of her students were children from a struggling neighborhood in England. “These children didn’t have much and couldn’t afford classes, but I was seeing such joy, and it in turn gave me so much pleasure to be making a difference,” Garton says. For Garton, it was so rewarding that she knew this is what she was “meant to do.” Having trained thousands of students and successfully owning the Royal Dance Academy in Carmel Valley for over 14 years, RAPA was the future she envisioned for her academy. She dreamed of creating a true performing arts academy with everything under one roof – a place where she could make a positive difference and inspire all artists to follow their dreams. The realization of RAPA is a true testament to her philosophy: “If you can dream it, then you can do it.” RAPA boasts five extra-large dance studios with viewing windows, in-house auditorium retractable seating for over 120 guests, three music/voice studios with recording studio, acting studio with “On Camera” classes, Pilates Reformer & Gyrotonic studio, yoga, large parent waiting lounge with flat screen viewing TV’s, study and tutor room, life coaching, nutrition, physical therapy, dietician, injury prevention, and a healthy juice and snack bar.

hen Anna Danes saunters onto the stage, every member in the audience sits up straight. It's not often a blonde- bombshell belts out an Edith Piaf hit with such intense precision, clarity and grace. One forgets the Marilyn Monroe-like Anna is actually singing something the famed French singer made famous many eras ago. Indeed, Anna makes it all new while maintaining the depth of meaning in the lyrics. Here we take a look into what makes this renowned singer unforgettable. YOU'RE AN EXCEPTIONAL SINGER; YOU TAKE THE AUDIENCE TO ANOTHER DIMENSION. DO YOU FIND YOURSELF "GOING SOMEWHERE ELSE" WHEN YOU SING?

Of course. That place is the central meaning of each song. It’s about understanding the song and telling its story - but not “acting” it out – it’s about making the feelings embedded in the song wholeheartedly your own. That’s why it is important to always sing songs that only truly have personal meaning. Maybe that’s why I ultimately turned to writing my own songs – no one can tell your own story better than you. Then again, today, I had the honor to sing the National Anthem in front of a very large audience – and let me tell you, prepping for the song this morning, I had tears in my eyes and my voice choked every time I rehearsed the lines “whose broad stripes and bright stars…” That has so much meaning to me, too. Someone else wrote that – in 1814 – but that flag means that much to me today. HOW DOES MUSIC BREAK THE BARRIERS OF LANGUAGE? HOW DOES IT SPEAK TO OUR HEARTS?

The song that I most asked to sing is “La Vie en Rose.” Funny, people asking for it don’t usually know French. However, maybe the language 18

is a non-issue for me and the listener. When I sing in French, I let it all out, because “no one" probably understands. But here is the magic – they do – they hear my ultimate honestly, without ever knowing the language! It’s incredible. Maybe it’s about singing honestly, that’s all, no language barriers then exist. TELL US HOW YOU RELATE WITH THE LYRICS OF "LA VIE EN ROSE."

Well, that song was written in 1942 by Edith Piaf, in a time of war, World War II. When I first introduced to the song, my “home” situation was also in a state of upheaval; Poland was controlled by Russia. Life was harsh and resources were scarce; choices limited. Seeing life through "rose-colored” glasses is something I grew up with. It didn’t get easier after that: I went through three immigrations, three languages to learn, new social spheres, my parent’s ultimate divorce and having to leave my family behind in Poland – not to mention some other rough adventures along the way. But here we are. I choose to see life through rose-colored glasses, every day. And now, it’s become the real thing. Life is good. Life is how you see it. YOU'VE MADE HUGE STRIDES IN JUST A FEW YEARS. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ASKED TO SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM (AGAIN) TOMORROW?

No words. It’s a deep down feeling of appreciation and recognition and I am simply humbled by it. As a musician – as an artist –you are simply telling a story, or re-telling it in the hopes that it will resonate with others. The Anthem speaks volumes to me as a relative new American – I received my citizenship just about five years ago after, as mentioned, two prior immi-

grations. This is home. I am honored to sing the Anthem every time. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I guess I am mostly inspired by truth, honesty, integrity, hard work – and also, beauty. To thy own self be true – and be good at it. Really good. And besides that, I love love. Yes, I love my friends, my family, my guy, my home – I love when my rusty old Bug Convertible squeaks on the road. I love life as it comes at me and I love it for what it is, and for all the daily meaning and substance I squeeze out of it. With that said, I love art, fashion, fine cuisine, amazing travel - essentially, living elevated. Life’s beautiful. Live it that way. FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO AN ASPIRING ARTIST?

Follow that dream. Work very hard, keep an open mind, learn all you can learn – from everywhere and everyone. Keep re-evaluating your dream as you learn. Never look at a “missed” or “bad” anything as more than an opportunity to learn – and maybe the universe sending you a message that you’re still working towards your true path.

Indeed...we will be performing on Friday, Sept. 4, and love playing there for a variety of reasons. Mostly, because it's home to us and always special when family, friends and neighbors are around to enjoy the night with us. Also, the production and sound is top notch. It's flattering to be part of Belly Up's rich history. Established in 1974, Belly Up has a deserved world class reputation, hosting some of the biggest names in entertainment – reggae and beyond (Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Willie Nelson, Lady Gaga and more). Some of my favorites shows have included The Wailers, Bedouin Soundclash and Black Uhuru. ONE DROP'S MUSIC HAS A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THE POWER OF LOVE, POSITIVE THINKING, AND EXPLORING THE WORLD. YOU'VE TRAVELED ALL OVER THE GLOBE, BUT ALSO HAVE A SPECIAL CONNECTION WITH SAN DIEGO. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE NORTH COUNTY SPOTS?

To me, San Diego truly is America's paradise and I feel fortunate to live in a place where people come to vacation. However, the world is big and filled with other amazing places with incredible sites, geography, history, people/culture and I encourage others to get out and explore it for themselves. You learn and grow so much when you do. It's certainly shaping me, and influences my song writing. I'm grateful for my experiences – and my global adventures will never end – but at the end of the day we return home, and I'm stoked that San Diego is my home. Some favorite N. County spots: Seaside Market in Cardiff for beach/picnic grub, (they have an amazing deli with fresh poke), Beacon's Beach for surf and of course the Belly Up for live music. A BLUEPRINT FOR BUSINESS SUCCESSION PLANNING ARTICLE THOMAS BLOTTENBERGER, CFP(R), CHFC(R) PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

he equity in a small business owners’ companies is a valuable asset. But in a privately held company, how can equity be converted to cash when the owner exits the business? Creating an exit plan – commonly called a “succession plan” – is an integral part of strategic business planning. This article will help business owners understand: 1) why a succession plan is important; 2) how to begin the process; and 3) how to put the plan into action. THE TAX IMPACT AT AN OWNER’S EXIT

Succession planning, which involves passing ownership to an heir or selling the company, aims to achieve an optimal outcome for the business, which includes converting business equity into cash. This goal is important for two reasons: 1. At retirement, business owners usually want to enjoy themselves or pursue other opportunities. After giving up control, they don’t want to worry about the health of their business. 2. An owner’s heirs may lack the knowledge or interest to manage the business – and may prefer to liquidate it. The value of a business passed to heirs is included in the owner’s estate at death and could be subject to federal estate taxes. These taxes must be paid in cash, and the filing deadline for federal estate taxes is nine months after the date of death, unless an extension is requested. VALUING THE BUSINESS

After a successor is identified, the next step is to determine the buy-out value. Although small business owners have some flexibility in setting the price of a buy-out transaction, the IRS and courts require a valuation that represents fair market reality. Some valuation methods include: • Comparable recent transactions – Business value is based on the terms of sales or mergers involving companies of comparable size in the same industry. • Multiple of revenue or book value – Business value may be pegged to a multiple of gross revenues in the year or two just before the owner exits. For example, some service-oriented businesses may sell for about one to two times annual gross revenues. • Discounted cash flow – The value is based on total cash flow that the business is projected to generate for a period of years after the owner’s exit, discounted by a cost of capital.

DRAFTING THE LEGAL AGREEMENT

The next step is to formalize the buy-sell agreement in writing with the help of a succession planning attorney. An important section of the agreement defines “trigger events” that will require ownership to change hands. Common trigger events include an owner’s death, disability, retirement or divorce. FUNDING THE BUY-SELL AGREEMENT

Permanent life insurance is often used to fund buy-sell agreements. This is because coverage can continue, and premiums remain constant. Funding these agreements with permanent life insurance also has other benefits: • Quick and convenient cash for heirs – Life insurance solves the problem of turning an illiquid asset (the business) into cash. • Tax advantages – Life insurance pays a death benefit that is generally free of federal income taxes. In buy-sell agreements, the benefit is usually paid to the party who has the obligation to buy the shares, so the death benefit does not create estate tax consequences. • Cash value – The cash value of a permanent policy can provide buyout funds if an owner exits at a lifetime triggering event. Most agreements include provisions for terminating the buy-sell agreement. In such instances, the policy’s owner can recoup part of the premium cost from the cash value. Successful business owners rarely stop working long enough to ask why they are working so hard. But ultimately, most are striving to achieve a certain level of security for themselves and their loved ones. With the right succession planning, small business owners can help to ensure both the long-term success of their business – and greater financial security for themselves and their family for many years to come.

his is one secret that can’t be kept quiet – from the moment I sat down in Café Secret, the culinary delight began. It took only seconds for Café Secret’s ambiance and delicious aromas to romance me. Sitting in the corner, I felt “tucked in” to the patio among its colorfully dotted foliage circling its way up the terrace and I allowed myself to take a mental journey far away while listening to the guitar-duo strum Latin-influenced tunes. A carafe of perfectly-blended homemade sangria and appetizers sealed the deal – I didn’t want to leave. Luckily, it turns out Café Secret’s owners, Bratzo and Daniella Basagoitia, don’t want their guests to leave either. The whole premise of this Peruvian restaurant is based on the couple’s shared love of cooking for friends while enjoying long evenings of authentic home-made Peruvian dishes and conversation. It’s a true experience to dine at Café Secret, and it is meant to be. The staff is genuinely friendly and diners feel the warmth and sincere hospitality in the air. “The whole vibe here is to make you feel like you’re having dinner at our home,” Daniella says. You'll definitely enjoy the delicious food, delightful drinks and breathe in the charm of this little slice of Peru sitting right on Camino Del Mar. Yes, this is the “refuge-like” restaurant that Del Mar locals keep raving about to friends. In fact, one such resident, Diane Hoyt, loves it.

“After being here, I have to go to Peru," Hoyt says. "They’re so accommodating. Café Secret is not commercialized; the people are genuine and the food is amazing.” Indeed, the food is legitimately mouth-watering. And most recently a scrumptious happy hour was introduced from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The menu items include many restaurant favorites such as the oh-so-tender Beef Empanada (made with ground sirloin). Each empanada is made from scratch with each dough piece individually pinrolled, hand-folded and filled. The quality is obvious upon first bite. It is light within its beautifully baked pastry shell – this empanada literally melts in your mouth. Then there’s the out-of-this-world Prawns Al Ajillo which are sautéed with garlic butter, wine and aji Amarillo – an imported Peruvian chili pepper, the aji Amarillo is the “soul” of the Peruvian cuisine, $7. Also among the favorites are the delicious Scallops Au Gratin covered with parmesan cheese and lime juice, $12; the Clasico Fish Ceviche, $13 (always a fresh and local catch of-the-day); and a vegan-friendly and gluten-free Quinoa Tamale cooked to perfection with fresh cheese, aji and cilantro, $7. Then there’s the happy hour sangria, house wine and mimosas for only $5, or the yummy Peruvian beer for only $3. Basically, everyone in town is scrambling to get off of work early and head to Café Secret. (And for good reason.) The food is simply the best Peruvian-inspired recipes in San Diego, period. Nothing comes out of that kitchen without being prepared to perfection – the food is as fresh as the presentation is fantastic. Naturally, the lunch and dinner menu is a wonderful extension of the delightful happy hour menu. Entrees include fresh fish, Peruvian specials such as Lomito Saltado (filet mignon stir-fry with veggies and aji pepper, fried yucca and garlic rice), Macho, Arroz Con Pato and many more. Peruvian food, like the Peruvian culture, is elaborate and full of heart. Anyone will feel at home in Café Secret, and that’s exactly what the dynamic Daniella and Bratzo duo intended to accomplish. They’ve done it with great flair and incredible humility. Bravo to six delicious years in Del Mar! Café Secret is open daily for lunch and dinner; it closes at 10 p.m. On Saturday and Sundays it boasts one of the best breakfasts in town starting at 8 a.m. Feel free to come either in jeans and flip-flops or a dress and heels; either works just fine. NOT EVERYONE READS POETRY. IN FACT, PERHAPS MOST PEOPLE DO NOT READ POETRY. WHY DO YOU READ POETRY? WHY WOULD ANYONE READ POETRY?

Poetry can be annoying, especially when it tells you what you already know in a solemn, pompous tone. There are poems like that, but there are other sorts as well. I look to poems for new observations, fresh perspectives, and unusual combinations of words, images, ideas. A good poem reshuffles things and shakes them up. It sticks in your mind and leaves you thinking. A poem can also put you in touch with the sensuous, playful aspects of language. I recommend poetry for all those reasons. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW BOOK, ITSELF, PUBLISHED WITHIN THE WESLEYAN POETRY SERIES! THIS IS YOUR 12TH COLLECTION. HOW DID YOU KNOW WHEN IT WAS DONE?

For me a book records a certain period. It will probably have an overarching mood and some recurring concerns. The nature of the self (any self) is an ongoing concern in the new book. The mood or tone is kind of edgy, jumpy. The simplest way to decide when a book project is over is to observe when your mood and/or interests change – and they will. YOU SOMETIMES WRITE ABOUT CALIFORNIA. IN WHAT WAYS IS CALIFORNIA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PLACES, DO YOU THINK? IN WHAT WAYS IS IT THE SAME AS EVERYWHERE ELSE?

Every region has a different feel to it. Let's just hope globalization doesn't manage to change that. There are so many different terrains and cultures in California. I grew up in San Diego, in the semi-arid coastal strip, near forested mountains and a desert, sandwiched between Mexico to the south and Camp Pendleton to the north. If this area were a wine, it would take a long list of seemingly unrelated adjectives to attempt to describe it. A lot of my poems begin with observation of what's around me so, naturally, the local plants and freeways and signage (etc.) all enter in. YOUR POEMS SOMETIMES ENGAGE IN SCIENTIFIC, MATHEMATICAL, OR TECHNOLOGICAL CONCEPTS AND LANGUAGE. WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOUR POEMS INVOLVE A RESEARCH PROCESS?

I've been interested in some scientific subjects for most of my life. I read popular books on physics, neurology, and biology. Some of the phrases and concepts in those books seep into my work. I've even made friends with a couple of physicists, particularly Brian Keating (of UCSD). He and I taught a class together and had some stimulating conversations. I guess you could call that research. I'm just following where my interests lead. YOU’VE TAUGHT AT UCSD FOR SOME TIME, AND ARE RETIRING THIS YEAR. NO DOUBT YOU’VE WORKED WITH COUNTLESS YOUNG WRITERS. WHAT QUESTIONS DO NEW POETS ASK ABOUT POEMS?

I wish they asked more questions! I guess because I meet them in an academic situation I mostly hear questions like "How long does this need to be?" or "What should I write about?" I wish they would ask me what they should read. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME SOMEONE READ A POEM TO YOU?

When I was a child and my mother read to me. I hear a lot of poems at poetry readings, but that's not the same as having someone read to you. 28

here’s something great about the start of a new school year. Classrooms are sparkling clean, the rows of desks have never been more perfectly straight, and the whiteboards gleam in unmarked perfection. Every crayon is pointy. Every ball is bouncy. There are no forlorn, forgotten jackets in the lost and found. It’s a short-lived, scholarly heaven where everything smells like new shoes. Best of all, everyone is clear that it’s time to learn something new. You’re not in fourth grade anymore, teachers across the country chorus. We do things differently in fifth grade. Being a kid, and a learner, takes humility and courage. Adults more rarely experience rookie status, and maybe that’s too bad. There’s something to be said for fear and failure. One ambitious autumn as an undergraduate college student, I decided to learn ballet. I enrolled in a course at my community college, and got myself a black leotard, some tights, and some sweet ballet slippers. I pulled my hair into a shining ballerina bun. I prepared for awesomeness. To my embarrassment, I was no ballerina. I’m a slower auditory processor to begin with, and the slippery French terminology was beyond me. I was sullen and clunky at the barre. My legs looked weird in pale tights. I was the world’s worst ballerina. It wasn't really fun at the time, but I am proud of myself now for trying that hard thing. Remember learning how to do stuff? I can remember my cousin teaching me how to backflip off her backyard diving 34

board. We dove and flipped late into the night, as neighborhood bats criss-crossed a sky made hazy with chlorine-clouded vision. An optometrist taught me how to place contact lenses on my eye with a fingertip when I was in eighth grade. Since I had worn glasses from second grade onward, the shock of seeing the world that clear and that close without my glasses was so intense that I fainted in my chair. Other things I know how to do, but don't remember learning – like how to open a bottle of wine or play gin rummy. Who taught me how to do a handstand? I don't remember, but I can do it. I don't remember learning how to read. It seems like I always knew how to read, and I can remember getting my first library card. Like a lot of library cards, it was blue and white. I read everywhere. I read in the magnolia tree in my front yard. I read in the back seat of my parents' station wagon. I read on the floor. I read in the bathtub. I didn't know it then, but I was learning how to be in the world. Because when I put my book down, the outside world was still there. And it's a very public world, filled with interesting people, hectic colorful streets, revolving seasons, and wild untamed places. But my inner world was not only all my own, it was mine to keep. Just as you are learning to be in the world, neighbor of mine. I'm glad we're here together.
