Surprise! O
n a shelf in our house is an old canister that purports itself to be full of jellybeans, a glossy label promising treats. But it’s a big ol’ trick to the unsuspecting. One twist of the lid and there it is: an explosion of wild crepe covered springs. My four year old finds this prank hilarious always, and has been known to knock on neighbors’ doors before breakfast, after dinner, bare feet, pajama clad, swimsuit clad, chocolate milk on his face, hair crazy, just to show them. Just to let them see. There is no self-consciousness, no regard for decorum, no need to be preemptive; instead, there is just a simple need to show, to share something incredible.
Knowing that Draper Lifestyle would soon be launching, I have spent the past few months hyper-aware of Draper. All of it. I drove the streets of our cute town with care, trying to notice things. I stopped. I talked to people. I listened. I spent the better part of an early spring morning in a warm patch of sunshine around a table at the Draper Historical Society, chatting with locals whose roots run deep here, yearning to tell their stories—our stories—the stories that have shaped our unique community. I have learned more from these simple gestures of inquiry and pause than I’ve known in 10 years of living here—and what I’ve learned is this: I am interested. I want to know it all. And like my little guy, I want to show you! I want to share! Sometimes we look without seeing and what lies waiting to surprise us when we do open our eyes is something that’s been in front of us all along. And it’s pure, unexpected delight.

Take, for example, our trail system in Corner Canyon. We know it’s there, but do we really understand the positive impact it has on our community? Or when we learn of a neighbor’s desire to throw a wedding reception, do we wish them luck and go on with our own busy lives, or do we see a true need and pull together? Spoiler alert: we pull together.

I hope that together we can continue to discover the surprises of our community, and the mainstays, and all the stories in between. Feel like being delighted? Want to know more? Want to tell us what to write about next? Then you’ve come to the right place. So read on, friend, and if you see me around town, stop me, because I want to hear your stories.

Run Like a Girl
LEARNING POSITIVE LIFE LESSONS THROUGH GIRLS ON THE RUN
ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
L
ocal girls in third to eighth grade are gathering after school clad in bright green t-shirts to learn healthy lessons for life, including that of setting and reaching a goal. Meanwhile, they’re gaining confidence with each stride as they run together, all in preparation for completing a 5K at Sugar House Park on May 30. The program is called Girls on the Run for grades three to five, or Girls on Track for grades six to eight. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a national non-profit with a staff of three in Salt Lake City and 300 trained volunteer coaches in various Utah communities. Shelley Snow is program director of Girls On The Run Utah. Snow described GOTR as a positive youth development program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident while using running as a vehicle for the program’s curriculum. After retiring from teaching, Snow started coaching a GOTR team and later she landed what she calls her “dream job” of being an employee of the program for Utah. “I’ve run for 38 years and I’m passionate about women and girls reaching their potential and giving them every opportunity we can. That’s what Girls on the Run does,” Snow says. Draper has three GOTR teams. One is at American Preparatory Academy, one at Treehouse Athletic Club and one at Summit Academy. Each location follows the same curriculum, warm-up activities and training schedule for three months in preparation for the 5K. Jill Hartey volunteers as Summit’s coach. Her group gathers in the school’s gym for the lesson and a fun warm-up activity before running laps. The girls sit in a circle and Hartey asks them for suggestions of healthy foods, encouraging them to look for snacks from “close to the earth” such as fruits and vegetables. Hartey says she has always encouraged her daughter to run, but that she wanted her to run with her peers and “to grow a love for it herself.” 12
Draper Lifestyle | May 2015
“I wanted to coach because I believe in this program. It is the girls who inspire me. I want them to take these 12 weeks we have together…to carry that sense of confidence and accomplishment they earned forever,” Hartey says. Sandy Martinez experienced GOTR when she lived in Virginia. Upon moving to Utah, she started the program at American Preparatory Academy where her daughters attend school. Her group recently learned about positive self-talk such as “I can” vs. “I can’t” as well as the notion of being a good friend. Martinez said the Girls on Track have similar discussions but that they go “a little bit deeper” including discussing eating disorders and self-worth. Treehouse employee Linda Frogley chose to volunteer her time for the program that operates out of the athletic club. She’s in her second year of coaching there. She said girls don’t need to be club members to join her GOTR group. “I just love the curriculum and the idea of getting these girls comfortable in their own skin, preparing to run and learning to love themselves,” Frogley says. Each girl participating in the 5K will have a Running Buddy, often a parent or family member. Community volunteers are also needed as Running Buddies. Details can be found at GirlsOnTheRunUtah.org where volunteers can register until May 28. Snow describes the event as having a carnival-type atmosphere with all the girls wearing GOTR superhero-type capes. “The race is a celebration of what these girls have been working on for three months," she says. "You talk about emotional. To see those girls cross that finish line…it’s quite an experience. There really aren’t words for it."

Safe, Strong, Balanced GETTING READY FOR TRAIL TIME ARTICLE KAT MORRILL
T
he springtime weather has us ready to enjoy outdoor recreation activities. Many look forward to walking, hiking, horseback riding and biking on the bountiful trails Draper has to offer. However you choose to enjoy the trails, consider doing a little preparation before you head out. Here are two key exercises that will benefit you by keeping you safer, stronger and more balanced. Core training is a perfect place to start. The beauty and risk of nature is that it is ever changing. This environment can put unexpected roots, rocks, people or animals our path. A strong core is our first line of defense in preventing injury. Mastering a plank will provide protection for your spine and aide in proper alignment. Begin in a prone position on the f loor with hands placed close to your chest. Pull your shoulders away from your ears, (visualize sliding your scapulas into your back pockets). Press your toes into the f loor and engage your calves, hamstrings, glutes and quads. Draw in your belly. Exhale as your push away from the f loor. Keep the entire body engaged as you hold the plank with your eyes gazing slightly out over your fingertips. When a plank is done correctly, you will feel your entire body working in unison. Set a timer and see how long you can hold a proper plank. If you are new to planks, begin with your knees on the ground. Do three sets of
14
Draper Lifestyle | May 2015
plank holds. When you are up to one minute and it becomes easy, progress to side planks or plank holds with three points touching, then two. Once we have addressed the core, we can hit the power muscles of riding, hiking and running: THE LEGS! Bulgarian split squats are a fantastic way to prepare the legs for the trails. In a Bulgarian split squat, you place once foot on a bench behind you. Your front foot is placed out far enough that you can see the tip of your shoe. Keep your shoulders square as you lower down into a lunge. Both legs should be engaged throughout the lowering and lifting part of this exercise. Try not to let your chest fall forward as this will put the load into your low back and front knee. When done correctly, this exercise will help stretch the hip flexor (which can become very tight when you spend a lot of time in the saddle, sitting at a computer or driving), improve balance and develop equal strength in both legs. Begin with two to three sets of 10 repetitions on each leg. You can progress to higher reps and even add a set of dumbbells to continue to build strength and power. Start the season off on the right foot. Spending a little time preparing will allow a lot of time on the trails! Kat works at Treehouse Athletic Club and is a Certified Personal trainer (ASCM), Certified Group Instructor (ACE) and Certified Nutrition Specialist (ACE).

You Live Where? DRAPER, A CITY WITH A REMARKABLE PAST ARTICLE LUANA GUYMON
“Y
ou live where?" This is the question the residents of Draper were asked before the year 1978. To many, Draper was just another town located on the south end of Salt Lake County. The history behind Draper beings in the fall of 1849 when settlers discovered a beautiful cove of approximately 15 square miles. There were four streams in the area and it appeared to be good pasture land for cattle and horses. The first settlers, Ebenezer Brown, his wife, Phoebe and five children arrived in 1849-1850. Others followed and soon Draper was a booming town with 20 families. These families brought with them sheep and cattle for home use.
gan to widen the wall and extend its height. The fort is in the area where the Draper Historical Park is now located. It was big enough to house 31 families. Draper comprised all of the settlements south of Jordan High School to the point of the mountain, east to the Wasatch Mountains and west across the Jordan River. It also originally included Riverton and Bluffdale. Ebenezer Brown and his sons, Norman and Gurnsey, brought the first cattle to Draper in 1849-1850 to fatten and sell to emigrants going to California. A Pony Express Station was built south of the present prison site

The first furrow was plowed by Norman Brown in the year 1850. He planted 10 acres of corn and so began a long history of farming in this community. near Warm Springs. The station served as a boarding house with rooms to rent. It was operated by Orrin Porter Rockwell, who was a famous scout and body guard to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. From blacksmith shops and sawmills to molasses factories, Draper grew and industry expanded. Ditches and canals were built and the railroad come to Utah and made its way around the Point of the Mountain. Draper became the largest sheep center in the state. As the poultry business flourished, Draper became known as the Egg Basket of Utah. In 1924, the Draper Milk Cooler was built to help the dairy famers better cool their milk. These businessses proved to be very successful for many years to come. We live in Draper, a city with a remarkable past. Today, instead of farmland, we have home and businesses and many of the residents here have witness much of the above. Mountain Biking And More
The Corner Canyon Trail Network Is Among Utah’s Best
ARTICLE JOSS DEWAELE | PHOTOGRAPHY PIER23PHOTOGRAPHY.COM
U
tah is well known to the cycling world. Moab has long been considered a premier mountain bike destination. The Tour of Utah is one of the biggest cycling events held in the U.S. In 2008, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (I.M.B.A.) recognized Park City as a Gold-Level Ride Center. People come from all over the world to ride bikes in Utah, and the City of Draper is positioning itself to boast one of the best trail networks in Utah. Jamie and Whitney Pogue have lived in Draper since 2002. They take their kids on the paved trails behind their neighborhood, and they both coach the Corner Canyon High School cycling team, with Whitney serving as head coach. Jamie also serves as the chairman of the trails committee for the City of Draper, and he says the benefits of local trails go beyond measure.
18
Draper Lifestyle | May 2015
“I suppose they increase home values and they bring people to the area, but having these trails in our back yard is so much more than that,” Jamie says. Economic impact studies continue to show the positive impact that trails have on local economies. Nadia Kaliszewski’s 2011 Economic Impact Study of the Jackson Hole Trails Project estimated that the area’s trails generate more than $18 million for the local economy each year, with the trail system costing only $1.7 million over the course of the previous decade. When Colorado’s Department of Transportation commissioned an economic impact study for bicycling and walking, it found that bicycling brings more than $1 billion to the Colorado state economy. The National Bicycle Dealers Association estimated in 2009 that the U.S. bicycle industry as a whole is a $5.6 billion industry. In short, bikes are big business, and
those who bike have discretionary incomes and travel with their bike in order to ride. Yet for Jamie and Whitney, the impact of their work goes beyond the dollars. “The Corner Canyon High School cycling team had 75 riders in 2013,” Jamie says. “In 2014, we grew to a team of 107 riders. It’s the biggest team in the U.S.” The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (N.I.C.A.) began in Northern California in 2009, according to its website. Since then, N.I.C.A. has grown to include 15 leagues, often designated by state. According to the Utah league website, it started in 2012 with a record number of participants: 28 teams totaling 321 participants. Also according to the site, each year has seen record growth, with 67 percent growth in 2014, a N.I.C.A. record for participation growth. Whitney adds, "The league is expecting in excess of 1500 riders this 2015 season."
John Andersen
Not only are the high school teams the biggest in the country, but the development programs in the middle schools also show record numbers. For Jamie and Whitney Pogue, these participation numbers are not only about putting kids on bikes, they also create a future generation of responsible trail users. “We teach the kids on our team about trail etiquette,” Jamie says. “And we require that they do service and trail projects to give back to the trails. And the other coaches do this with their teams. We take safety and courtesy very seriously.” The stress on courtesy goes beyond the coaching. In a 2012 Trails Committee PowerPoint presentation, the committee identified courtesy as the number one solution to mitigate user conflicts on the trails. “User conflict in inevitable,” Jamie says. “We are unique here because people know who to complain to, so we hear about all the complaints. And that’s a good thing. We’ve seen a huge increase in the use of our trails, but the complaints have not increased. That tells me we’re doing something right.” Corner Canyon includes more than 53 miles of soft surface trails, according to the same PowerPoint presentation, and it continues to grow every year. The inevitable user conflicts that come with increased activity is the most difficult part of managing growth. “We take a multi-pronged approach,” Jamie says. “Sometimes it’s user-specific trails, sometimes it’s one-way trails, sometimes it’s trail design, sometimes it’s signage, but a lot of it comes down to education and people being courteous.” With the continued use of a multi-pronged approach to keep user conflicts at a minimum, the city is also expanding its trail network. “The city of Draper purchased a large chunk of land on the south side Traverse Ridge Road,” Jamie says. “We are in the process of creating a master plan for the area with a mix if multiuse and user-specific trails. By this time next year, we should be breaking ground for new trails to be useable by the summer.” I.M.B.A.’s Trail Ambassador, Joey Klein, has consulted with the City of Draper on many occasions. Klein has built trails in consultation with municipalities around the world, and according to Jamie, Klein feels there is something unique in the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. “Joey says that our city’s cooperation among land managers and trail users is unlike anywhere else in the world,” Jamie says of Klein. “Our vision and our cooperation among a diverse group of trail users, Joey says he doesn’t see that kind of work happen. We have a great group of people who are committed to keeping the trails multi-use. We want the trails to be open to everyone. We’ve got something special here.” Photos taken in Maple Hollow of members of the Corner Canyon High School team.

The couple decided to hold their wedding ceremony in the beautiful port city of Genoa. Austin and Christina found that planning a destination wedding was easier than they had expected. The only real problem they encountered was that on the day of their wedding, Genoa experienced torrential rain and was completely flooded out. They made some last-minute adjustments and instead got married in the picturCONTINUED >

CIAO BELLA!
(CONTINUED)
esque area known as Cinque Terre—a rugged, yet enchanting portion of the coast of the Italian Riviera consisting of five towns and villages. “It was everything we had hoped it would be,” reflects Christina on her magical day. The newlyweds spent the remainder of their honeymoon in Italy. They did something a little unconventional, but as Austin says, “It was one of the best decisions we made.” In each of the cities, they chose a couple of landmarks and had photographs taken in their bride and groom apparel. They had pictures taken while riding in a gondola in Venice, kissing in front of the historic coliseum in Rome and walking hand-in-hand along the quaint cobblestone streets. Upon their return to the States, the bride’s family hosted a reception in Ohio. The grooms parents, Pamela and Tab Bingham of Draper, had never planned on throwing a local reception for the couple, but it pained them to know that very few of their dear friends and family had been able to attend either of the wedding events. The Binghams wanted desperately to pay tribute to the couple, but after the travel expenses to Italy and Ohio, the cost of hosting a local reception proved to be too much. They concluded that a small open house was the best they could do. As they began to brainstorm with friends and neighbors to see how they could pull off the last-minute event, something remarkable began to happen, or as Pamela described, “That is when the magic began. Our friends began to rally around us in a way that we could never have imagined.” The Binghams were overwhelmed with gratitude as they watched over 25 friends and neighbors volunteer their time, talents and personal items to be used for the reception. 22
Draper Lifestyle | May 2015
Homes were offered to host the event. Floral arrangements were donated. Centerpieces and tablecloths were provided and countless helping hands rallied to pull off the special celebration. One of the Binghams’ dear friends offered her event planning skills. Other local friends offered countless items, which had recently been used for their own daughters’ receptions. Tablecloths, picture frames, easels and candlesticks, were delivered and displayed. A local florist and friend created and delivered the floral arrangements and several nine year old girls volunteered to be the servers. The Binghams reserved the State Capitol Building Rotunda. It proved to be an economical choice and the perfect setting for their politically minded son, Austin— currently a lobbyist for Education First. On the night of the reception, Pamela said that she would never forget what it was like to watch so many people come together on their behalf. Countless friends donated their time to help setup, facilitate, serve food, and then take down all of the tables, chairs, and decorations. One friend offered to take photos, others manned the photo booth and several just waited around to help clean up. Pamela says that the humbling outpouring of support made her feel a connection to Draper that changed her life. Friends saw her distress and didn’t turn away and instead rallied to help. Neighbors looked past the fact that it was going to be her son’s third wedding event and instead helped to throw a meaningful celebration for a remarkable couple. “It was amazing and it created a sense of community that is difficult to describe," Pamela reflects. "I have never felt such a connection in my heart. It made me proud to be from Draper.”

Spring into Summer
FIVE WEARABLE SUMMER FASHION TRENDS
ARTICLE JESSICA CHRISTENSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BEYONDTHEDARKROOM.COM
T
ime flies, trends change quickly and another summer is around the corner. Is your wardrobe prepared? Keep on the lookout for these pieces and you'll be ready when June rolls around.
winter, but now it’s time to shed those heavy layers for lighter options. Layering with lace, feathers or fringe transforms your style from plain to luxe. The basic rule here is choose one textured piece, then keep the rest of your look simple to let that dimension shine!
TIE-WAIST TROUSER
Tired of wearing skinny jeans? Why not try a tie-waist trouser? Don’t think you can’t pull off the exaggerated silhouette? Not so! In fact, these pants could very well be your new go-to. The high waist is supremely flattering and makes your waist look teeny tiny, especially with a tucked in blouse or t-shirt. Make the look office appropriate with a wide leg pant, silky blouse and open blazer. Fashion daredevils may even get creative by pairing them with the popular cropped top. The possibilities are endless!
THE JUMPSUIT
THE SHIRTDRESS
RETRO POLO
Going for a laid-back, beachy vibe? A loose and flowing shirtdress in a soft shade is the perfect thing to throw on when you want to feel pretty. And with temperatures rising, it’s nice to slip into something a bit breezier! The modern shirtdress has a flattering, asymmetrical hemline. Dress it up with heeled sandals and a ladylike bag, or keep it simple and chic with strappy, flat sandals and a bucket bag.
Preppy polo shirts and dresses are making a comeback, and the updated polo is more dynamic than we have seen in the past. Color blocking, prints and striped detailing are trending along with a silhouette that is sleek and structured. Minimalist meets retro! Style your polo casual with jeans and sporty slides, or think outside the box by tucking it into a long, flowy maxi skirt and platform heels.
One of the coolest trends this summer is the romper. Sure to conjure memories of grade school, the grown up version is subtle and sophisticated. It’s all about proportions with this trend. If you’re petite or have a long waist, pair it with wedges (the heel of the summer) to help elongate the legs. Add some curve appeal with a jumpsuit style featuring pockets, belts and/or a v-neckline. Undoubtedly, when you rock the romper, the best accessory is confidence!
3-D EFFECTS
If you’re dying to try something new, elaborate embellishments will instantly update your wardrobe. We loved the faux fur trend in 26

LOCAL BOOK CLUB IS 32 YEARS STRONG: AN INTERVIEW WITH SHARON ANDRUS
ANY FUNNY STORIES OR MEMORABLE MEETINGS?
WHEN DID IT START AND HOW?
The book club started in 1983 when we were encouraged to start special interest groups as young mothers. Several women are original members, some are newer. Sadly, not all are pictured. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER?
It might be offensive, it sounds boring, that it will be over my head (that one is mine)! WHAT’S THE AVERAGE TIME YOU SPEND TALKING ABOUT THE BOOK BEFORE THE CON-
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT
VERSATION TURNS INTO POLITICS OR FAMILY?
BOOK CLUB?
Forty-five minutes to an hour—it depends on the book.
I have learned so much from the ladies. Most of them are, or have been, school teachers. They have had many experiences I haven't had the opportunity to have, like visiting other countries and learning things just from their teaching. Reading the books they choose has been a real learning experience because I probably would never have chosen them myself. It’s also been great for friendship. The best thing about our group is we all feel like sisters. We enjoy being together and are willing to help each other in times of need.
Thirty-two years. WHAT BOOKS ARE ON YOUR LIST TO READ? WHO IS THE AUTHOR YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO MEET?
Wallace Stegner, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, C.S. Lewis, Charles Dickens, Margaret Mitchell, Marcel Proust and Elizabeth Berg WHAT'S THE WORST EXCUSE ANYONE HAS GIVEN FOR NOT WANTING TO READ A BOOK?
Our Christmas meeting is usually a really fancy experience with special food and decorations. This year we decided to just have sandwiches and salads because everyone is so busy. The communication between two of the ladies wasn't very good so instead of having pulled pork sandwiches we ended up having pork and bean sandwiches because the two people who were supposed to bring the pulled pork forgot to bring it. But pork and beans wasn't too bad a substitute.
The Curious Incident of the Dog, Ordinary Grace, Orphan Train, Boys in the boat, Ghost Boy, All the Light We Cannot See, I Am Malala WHY DO YOU ENJOY THE GROUP?
We enjoy it for intellectual stimulation and friendships. I feel like we would not read otherwise and I really enjoy the diversity in our group.

The Market Pulse
of Draper Real Estate
Maximize Value, Minimize Expense Little things you can do to make a big impact.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a major renovation. There are some inexpensive updates you can do to increase appeal without breaking the bank.
Property Pulse
1. Replace cabinet handles and door knobs. Gold handles are out. You can instantly improve the look of your home by replacing or painting all gold handles with current finishes - brushed nickel or oil rubbed bronze. 2. Paint or stain cabinets rather than replace them. Update and refresh outdated cabinets inexpensively with a can of paint or gel stain using current colors: creamy whites, gray tones or dark, rich wood stains. Use high quality oil-based paint and good brushes, it’s still less expensive than a redo.
3. Change stairway carpet. Steps wear out and get dirty, and design trends have changed. Natural fibers like sisel and wool, or burber are popular. Choose a contrasting color or fun coordinating pattern.

Mother’s Day Gifts WHAT I REALLY WANT ARTICLE BROOKE BENTON
M
y mother sat the length of this past winter in a chair alongside the hospital bed of her youngest son, my little brother. She and I spent the long days of her bedside vigil texting the time away, across the divide—two states between us and all the unspoken emotion that illness brings. I sent her a link one day to the poem The Lanyard by Billy Collins—a poem, essentially, about a grown up realizing that the camp-made lanyard he gave his mother as a youth was scarcely enough to recompense her giving him life, for giving him everything. I was thinking of my mother, of motherhood, of the tirelessness and thanklessness of the job—and my mom texted back immediately: “But the thing is,” she wrote: “It was even. It was enough.” As Mother’s Day approaches, my kids ask in earnest, and sweetly, “What do you want, mom? Really.” And I answer with things like, “I have everything I want,” or, “I just want you.” And there are hearts in both of our eyes as they busy themselves away from me, in secret, cooking up schemes. On the big day, they are elaborate with their gestures and deliver me toast and eggs and love letters and the newspaper in bed, my book tossed aside hastily as I hear their tread outside the bedroom door and I feign sleep and then, surprised wakefulness. I cover them with kisses and coos as they clamber on the bed and share my breakfast, eating it mostly, hungrily, themselves. The act of making me breakfast, so grand in their minds, is empirically paltry to the loaves of toast I’ve buttered on their behalf and the hundreds of eggs I scramble so that they can have hot breakfasts before braving the walk to school. The sweet notes I get but once a year have nothing on the emails, the letters, the phone calls, the heartache and the tears I’ve expended for them, and yet… It is even. It is enough. My youngest is four and has a walk in closet in his bedroom— he owns nothing but toys and so the closet is a repository for

things in our life that don’t have places: wrapping paper, letters, mementos from the past. I saw him secretly trying to avoid me one lazy afternoon and could tell he was sneaking something out of the closet. “Do you have my rock?” I said. His voice was small as he answered, “Please?” As in, please can I have it? The rock is a perfect egg shape, but giant, found at a camp in what practically feels a former life, veiled by years and nostalgia and gap-filled memories. I was a teenager when I found it, middle of the forest, just lying there looking preternatural, like a dinosaur egg left behind from the Mesozoic. I was baffled by the rock, its oddity made it a treasure and so I’ve kept it without any attached significance, only that it looked cool. I had it on a windowsill in college, it survived moves and storage and all sorts of things only to end up in the hands of my little one, about to take it into the backyard to bash it with a hammer, because “there might be diamonds in it.” And I think this as I watch the hammer hanging in the balance, the rock’s fate certain: I kept that rock for 25 years and here it is, about to be bashed for whimsy, for no reason, for five minutes (if I’m lucky) of childish entertainment. I wonder at how easily I relinquish whatever staying power it has had in my life, and when my son bangs at it, I stare at his determination and I laugh. I am incredulous at the whole thing—at the entire roundabout fate of this rock: is it anti-climactic or is it beautiful? Because what is a dumb rock when compared to my son's smile, his want fulfilled? What is a love note delivered simply on the breakfast tray, the letters crooked but hand-wrought? What is a lanyard braided hastily at camp, but braided, I'm sure, with pure intent? What is any act or sacrifice that a mother makes for her children or a child makes for their mom? It’s love. And love? Well, that’s the best gift ever, and it’s all I really want.
