Making a house a home.
NOVEMBER 2015 publisher Alan Anderson | AAnderson@LifestylePubs.com
A
few months ago, my husband spoke to the business school at his alma mater. As I listened to him detail the last 18 years of our life business-wise, I had a matching story for each, but family-wise: how many children we had, what exactly was going on emotionally, and mostly, where we were living. Each memory was encased in a house; each house the backdrop for a particular time of our life. I remember pumpkin carving in a pumpkin colored house with white trim. I remember struggling to stay awake while reading library books on an old purple (purple!!) couch to a freshly bathed, wet haired toddler who’s now almost 15, in a bungalow that's now almost 100. I remember a wide porch where we’d sit while it rained, the drops plinking off the tin roof, and talk about all our tomorrows. I remember Play-doh and laughter and homework and cake around three different dinner tables in three different dining rooms in three different cities. The walls of our houses have held far more than furniture and have been far more than a place to lay our heads. They’ve held our entire life, while it has happened—the real parts, that are messy and unedited and joyful and true. What makes a house a home? What takes it from mere building materials to mythic setting of all good memories? Nostalgia mostly. And gratitude for the life lived inside its walls. Still, it helps to love the place you live while you live there. And that’s where this issue comes in. Sometimes it’s just the details—new throw pillows, or finally tackling an organizing project—and sometimes it’s bigger, and you build a mudroom or a new kitchen. Either way, creating the ideal setting where your life can play out is no small matter. So we hope this issue inspires you to love your home and love being there—whether over a Thanksgiving meal of family favorites or because of a great remodel. Plus, there’s also an interview with a local who, very long ago, chose to make Draper his home… Just like we all did. Happy Thanksgiving, friends.

MEMORIAL AND BENCH HONOR SGT. DEREK JOHNSON Law enforcement officers, city officials and community members gathered September 1 at Ballard Corner Memorial Park to remember Draper Police Sgt. Derek Johnson and to dedicate a park bench and stone memorial in his honor. “We are here to remember and honor Derek in an uplifting way,” said Draper City
Police Chief Bryan Roberts remarking on Derek’s infectious smile and upbeat nature. Draper Mayor Troy Walker spoke of a great young man who loved his job, his family and his community. “He was a fine example of what a community would want from a police officer." Walker thanked the city council members and the Ballard family for their efforts in creating the memorial park at 132nd South and Fort Street. “Out of a tragic event we have created a park, and what a beautiful place it is.” Shante Johnson spoke last saying her husband made an oath to protect and serve and did so even in his dying moments. The memorial is a way to remember him forever, she said, and commented how she loves the large tree that shelters his bench. The Mayor dedicated Sept. 1 as “Sgt. Derek Johnson Day” and his wife joked, “Babe, you have your own day!” She concluded by asking the audience to remember those who continue to serve our community. “Please remember the sacrifice,” she said. “Because when we are in trouble, the police come." GENEVA REZONE PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED IN NOVEMBER Geneva Rock has filed an application with Draper City to rezone a portion of its property located at the Point of the Mountain from an A-5 (agricultural) zone to an M-2 (manufacturing) zone that would allow Geneva to expand its excavation on this property. A number of issues have been raised regarding this rezone. Information will be presented at the public hearing on the following items, among others: air quality, conservation easement for the preservation of land, historical rights to run a sand and gravel operation, and potential impact on wind patterns. The application has been reviewed by the planning commission and is now ready for the city council to review. Shortly after the planning commission meeting, Draper City received requests from the public to hold an informal or town hall meeting to discuss this rezone. However, since an application had been filed, the next step is to schedule a public hearing so that all parties can be present at the meeting. Draper City invites all those who have an interest in this application to attend the upcoming meeting at 7 p.m. on November 10 in the Council Chambers of City Hall at 1020 East Pioneer Road in Draper. Anyone who wants to submit a comment, but is unable to attend the meeting, may send their written comments to the Draper City Recorder at Rachelle.Conner@Draper.Ut.us prior to the scheduled meeting.

History 101
SECRETS FROM THE PAST ARTICLE LUANA GUYMON
NANCY’S MINE
Ralph Smith lived close to the mountains and each night they could hear blasting from Nancy’s Mine and then they would see two men, usually with gunny sacks of something coming down the mountain. Ralph’s story: “When I was 10 years old I was hiking in Bear Canyon along the stream. It was steep and so much brush I could hardly work my way through it but I saw some pine trees on the stream up ahead and decided to go on up to them. I walked right into a big whisky still by the stream in those pines. It scared me because of what I had seen in the picture shows about the bootleggers and revenuers, so I got off that mountain and home as fast as I could.” Ralph told his father what he had seen and he in turn told the town marshal. After talking to Ralph the marshal contacted the Federal officers. Ralph led them to the still and the officers destroyed it. Soon after that the Nancys left Draper. Seems they had been selling whisky to the railroad men. CARTER SKY RANCH AIRPORT
In 1948 Vern and Jesse Carter purchased property on the southeastern end of the old sand hill in Draper near where the Hidden Valley Stake Center is now located. The runway and taxiways were leveled and Vern’s students soon began their flying lessons. In the spring of 1951 the construction of the hanger began and after it was completed they built a permanent home about 75 yards north of the hanger. The runway surface became one of the premier non-asphalt runways in the state of Utah. The young boys found the runway to be a great place for drag-racing. Mr. Carter understood this but when the drag-racing left 14

big tire tracks in the runway, it became a matter of safety for the aircraft pilots. One time Mr. Carter caught young Warren Fitzgerald out on the runway. Warren quickly turned the conversation to flying so Mr. Carter invited Warren to come back for a free flying lesson. Warren got out of a bad situation and started a career in flying. DRAPER MINT
Very few people are aware of the Draper Mint. The Northrup Garfield family are in possession of actual coins minted in Draper. HOT SPRINGS
Located near the State Prison site was a popular recreation park for baseball games and swimming. Some of the pots were used for soaking logs and scalding pigs. The warm springs were used for baptismal purposes. Crystal Lake was known to be over 390 feet deep and claimed several lives. The springs are still being used by surrounding businesses today. More information on these and more secrets can be found at the Draper Museum Library.

Five Essential Tips for a Healthy Work-Life Balance
A HEALTHY WORK-LIFE BALANCE ALLOWS YOU TO MAINTAIN PERSPECTIVE AND BALANCE IN YOUR LIFE ARTICLE TAYLOR COTTERELL
D
o you feel you need to introduce yourself to your children when you return home from a long day at work? Do they introduce you as "Mrs." when other parents ask who is walking with them? This disconnect from your home life could be a sign your life has fallen off-balance. Work-life balance is the elusive middle ground between working hard enough to maintain your standard of living and working so hard you don't have enough time to enjoy that standard of living. How, then, can we wrestle control back from our own workaholic selves? Here are five essential tips for achieving and maintaining a healthy life-work balance:
life has higher meaning, we are less likely to let work consume it. For example, we might commit to spending more time with child-rearing, or to more romance with a spouse, or more time to serving. STAY PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY ACTIVE
When we're not at work, the best way to maintain our efficiency and alertness at work (i.e., the type of discipline we need to keep our work from consuming us) is to stay physically and mentally active. The healthier we keep our minds and bodies, the better we'll perform as we get older and, yes, eventually retire and leave our work behind. CULTIVATE HOBBIES AND
SURROUND YOURSELF
INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF WORK
WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE
If you cannot find time for hobbies and interests outside of work, you're almost certainly not maintaining a healthy life-work balance. That's why it's so important that we force ourselves to make time for hobbies and interests that aren't work-related. Yes, our obligations are important, but we still must find time for the things we truly enjoy.
Our ability to achieve a proper lifework balance is often influenced by those around us. The more we are able to draw inspiration from others, the more likely we are to maintain a healthy work life. We want to be with people who encourage us: • to be productive at work and minimize "time sucks" • to stop doing work outside the office • to respect our commitments outside of work SERVE A HIGHER PURPOSE OUTSIDE OF WORK
One of the most important ways to keep our work life in check is to develop a sense of purpose outside of work. When our

ENJOY THE COMPENSATION FOR YOUR WORK
There is no reason to work hard at your job if you aren't able to reap the rewards from it. As we work to prepare for kids' college, paying off your home and being generous with others, we ought to allow ourselves opportunities to use even a small portion of our paycheck for something fun and entertaining. If you don't want to buy something for yourself, you can always buy something for a loved one—a gift that ideally will require your thought and personalization and time. If you find yourself surrounded by people who aren't encouraging nor promoting
that balance, if you can't identify a higher purpose for your life outside of work, if you're compromising your physical and mental health for your job, or if you're struggling to maintain personal interests and manage your hard-earned money wisely, you want to revisit your life-work balance and figure out what you can do differently to readjust that balance. As you do this, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to live a happier, healthier life while not compromising your productivity at work.

How to make your house a home.

I
am a carpenter, and I got into this business to help people. I fix houses. If your house is broken, flooded, or otherwise destroyed I can fix it back to the way it was. But my favorite thing is to take a house that is just livable and make it into a home where you love to live. Sometimes we remodel the whole house. We take out the walls we don’t like, and build the walls we do. We move a staircase, or cut a new exterior door. With unlimited money and time, you can change any house into exactly what you want. But even small changes can make your home a little more comfortable and a lot more livable. MUDROOMS
Mudrooms are a great place to start. How many of us have kids that come home from school and pile their stuff by the door? You’re glad to have the kids home, but the pile of backpacks, coats, mittens, skateboards, boots, shoes, skates, soccer balls, jackets, hats and books that collects near the door that the kids use most must go. If you have this pile, you need a mudroom. I like to build a mudroom on a strong foundation of shoe cubbies. The shoes are stored under a bench that you can sit on while you put on those shoes. I like to leave the bottom of the shoe cubby the same material as the floor--it’s usually tile or vinyl and it stays water resistant. Wet boots and shoes can ruin woodwork. Moving up, I like either lockers or an open space. Either way I add hooks for those backpacks, jackets, coats and hats. Lockers can have doors or not depending on how destructive your kids are. I like to build the lockers so we can add doors after the kids grow up and move to their own houses. Above the coat/backpack space we add more cubby holes. These can be filled with totes or baskets, or they can have cabinet doors. These cubbies are perfect storage and organization space for off-season clothes, sports paraphernalia and less used
With unlimited money and time, you can change any house into exactly what you want. But even small changes can make your home a little more comfortable and a lot more livable.

THE LITTLE THINGS (CONTINUED)
items. Baskets, totes, or doors hide the mess from view, which might be every homemaker’s dream. OUTDOOR SPACE
One of the most common problems people bring to me is not enough room in the home. Not to worry, let’s take the party outside. Outdoor living spaces are an awesome solution. Decks, pergolas, fire places and gazebos offer year-round entertaining outside and bring everyone together. Pergolas don’t block all the sun, but they provide just a little shade to make your outdoor space comfortable. They also provide a great place to hang a swing. Combined with a deck, it’s also a place to keep your barbecue and patio furniture. Build it high to capture a view, or low so you can have privacy. SMALL CHANGES
A built-in entertainment center can bring your whole family room together. Unsightly wires and stacks of DVDs will have a place of their own. Even kids’ books and toys can have a place, and that may also be every homemaker’s dream. With adults doing work and kids doing homework, the office is the information center for your home. I like a home office built-in near the kitchen or family room. Keeping the computer in a common area is safe and it brings homework time into family time. Is the fridge covered with school artwork with no room for more? Let’s add a magnet board to show off all those masterpieces. Fireplaces can be big or small. Handrail can open up a wall. Custom cabinets can make a unique bathroom. A new front door can breathe life into a home. There are a hundred small ways to make your house more livable; I can help you find them. After all, I got into this business to help people.

tep into Rex’s Barber Shop on Fort Street and there’s a silly clock, its numbers scattered, with the words, “Who cares?” And who should care about time when you get a fascinating history lesson or charming chat included with your haircut? Rex Rogers has been cutting hair longer than most Draper residents have been on earth. Clipping away, he tells tales of losing his boyhood savings of $27 in the Great Depression, serving in WWII, riding the range with cowboys, and befriending Native Americans in grade school. On the domestic front, he can talk tomatoes—how to grow ‘em, can ‘em and cook ‘em. “I’ve been there, done that,” he says about his life. “I think back on all the experiences I’ve had. You couldn’t even buy them now...” Haircuts were less than a dollar when Rogers started cutting hair in Draper, a “farming chicken town.” His shop has graced Fort Street since 1958, its (Left) Rex Rogers stands outside his barber shop on Fort Street in Draper. wood-paneled walls covered in Union Pacific calendars, photos, cartoons, hand-tied flies, and a framed $2 bill. There are three barber chairs, including a pint-sized chair for little ones. Leather razor-sharpening straps dangle on the side. Rex married a Draper girl, the late Faye Day, whose family owned the Day Barn now situated near the library. His style says no-nonsense practicality: a blue zip-down shirt, a Band-Aid taped across the bridge of his nose, and sensible brown shoes dusted with hair clippings. Three of the fingertips on his left hand are missing after he blew them off with a dynamite cap when he was little. “I knew it’d go bang, so I set it off in my hand.” A quiet 10-year-old sits in a barber chair ready for a cut. “How do you want your hair?” Rex asks. When the boy doesn’t reply quickly enough, Rex answers for him, “Short.” Rogers was born in the central Utah town of Kanosh in 1923 and survived on a farm. “You didn’t live on a farm back then, you survived,” he clarifies. He started cutting hair in 1943 while serving at a Naval pilot training base near Yuma, Ariz. His real job there had him checking off each plane fit for combat. Out of necessity—there was a long line of enlisted men in need of a haircut—he volunteered with no prior experience to be a barber. “They told me to put a sign up that read, ‘Free haircuts’ and that’s how I started.” He never made so much money, he jokes, as the men would give him a 25-cent tip for the “free” cut. In his years, he’s seen, styled and cut it all. Boys and men in long hair, shag cuts, buzz cuts, flat tops, rooster tails and The Beatles hair-dos. He’s had a mother come back and “roast him” after he gave her teenage son a mohawk. “I tried to talk him out of it...” He doesn’t see too many young men at his shop anymore. They’d rather go and have young ladies at fancy shops “doll them up.” Rogers loves his job because of his customers, many of whom have been coming for decades. He does them all a good service, he says, by “improving their looks.” There’s no retirement date on his calendar. “It is therapy for me. I never get bored. Every customer I do is different, their hair is different, all the conversations are different. I have to shift my profession and expertise on everyone.” Many customers come in to problem solve and ask his opinion, in addition to their haircut. When he isn’t working, Rogers enjoys skeet shooting and baking oatmeal cookies enhanced with dates, walnuts and orange zest, which he delivers about town. An avid gardener, he grows celebrity tomatoes, his favorite variety because “there is no core in ‘em.” This past summer he had 70 plants growing and at harvest season, canned 55 pints of chili sauce (his grandma’s recipe), 60 quarts of tomato juice and 25-30 quarts of stewed tomatoes. “Fresh tomatoes are good for you, but cooked tomatoes are even better,” is his advice, although not a secret to his longevity. You have to ask him that in person. Haircuts at Rex’s cost $10 now. But the history lessons—plus an oatmeal cookie if you’re lucky—from a man who has “been there and done that” are more than worth the time. “I’d go through it all again as much as I suffered. Wow, what an experience I’ve had.”

Holiday Health BEATING THE BULGE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON ARTICLE MARYLYNN THOMAS
T
he holiday season is upon us and I think it is safe to say we all enjoy it… well most of it. We love the parties with friends and family, the decorations, the merry mood most people are in and the powder covered ski slopes. Although, there is a reason that may make us dread the holidays. For many of us, this time of year can be a body bummer. We eat lots and before we know it our bellies are bulging and our bottom halves are bursting. I know what you are thinking, "This is going to be another article on strict guidelines and rules we need to adhere to so we don’t gain a single pound." But let’s be real, life is about enjoying as much as it is about achieving our goals. Below are some ideas to help us do just that, it may be easier than you think!
SMALLER PLATES
Remember: the SMALLER the BETTER. Grab a salad plate instead of the dinner plate. When you go to a potluck or buffet, use a smaller dish, you will end of eating less, but still get to enjoy the goodness! BALANCE YOUR PLATE
When Thanksgiving rolls around there are so many food choices. Studies show when there are more choices, we eat more. To combat this, divide your plate into four sections, Protein, Carb, Veggie and Fat. Let yourself have one of each. As far as how big: the size of your palm is your Protein, the size of your whole hand is your
24
Draper Lifestyle | November 2015
Veggie, and the size of your fist is your Carbohydrate, your Fat is the size of your first finger touching your thumb, making the perfect sign! PLAN YOUR WORKOUTS
Put a check box on your calendar for each day of the week and then check the box after your sweat session. Look at your gym schedule and plan the classes you will go to during these winter months. Treehouse Athletic Club has all sorts of classes, at convenient times. Come check out one of my Strength or TRX circuit classes. I even teach on Thanksgiving! You could also commit to a 5k, 10K, or half marathon. EXERCISE LESS BUT HARDER
Amp up your workouts with high-intensity interval training and circuit training. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology showed that those who performed high-intensity intervals on stationary bikes every other day for two weeks burned 36 percent more fat afterward than those who did a steady cycling workout. Next time you do any cardio, go fast and hard for 1-2 minutes and moderate for 3-4 minutes. Not in the mood to push yourself? Attend a class, let the instructor push you to your limit, you won’t be sorry. Treehouse has many HIIT and circuit classes to help you optimize your time and fat burn. Now that you have some tools to help you stay healthy this holiday season, go and enjoy yourself and have no regrets! Cheers!

What’s Cooking
on LOCAL CULINARY GRAD SHARES THANKSGIVING FAMILY FAVORITES ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SYDNIE MILLER SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS
INGREDIENTS
These meatballs are to die for! If there was anything my five-foot tall grandma knew how to do it was cook. Every year about this time, she would make these mouth watering bite-sized morsels for me to munch on. They are a perfect Thanksgiving side dish and offer a hearty option for the non-turkey lovers at the table. The meatballs are super easy to make and fill the house with such a warm and inviting scent. INGREDIENTS
For the meatballs: 2 pounds ground beef 1 cup cornflakes 2 Tablespoons dried onion 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/3 cup dried parsley 1/3 cup ketchup 3 eggs For the sauce: 1 jar chili sauce 1 can cranberry sauce 3 Tablespoons brown sugar 1-2 tablespoons lemon juice DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix meatball ingredients in a medium bowl together until blended and form into golf ball sizes. Place in a deep baking dish. Mix sauce ingredients together over low heat until melted. Pour sauce over meatballs and bake for 40 minutes. PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE BARS
Every year my family caves into buying a pumpkin pie from the local grocery store or (dare I say it?) even Costco. Last year I decided to do something different while keeping the festive and necessary pumpkin dish in mind. These Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars are such a perfect alternative to a pie. They are so easy to make its crazy, and have such a beautiful color. 26
Draper Lifestyle | November 2015
For the crust: 3/4 cup crushed chocolate graham crackers 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted For the filling: 2 8oz. packages cream cheese, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup pumpkin puree (not pie filling!) 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 ½ teaspoons pumpkin spice (see note) 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, slightly beaten DIRECTIONS
To make the crust: Line an 8" square baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a food processor or blender, crush crackers until fine. Add melted butter and process till combined. Press the crust into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake in the oven for seven minutes. To make the filling: In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese for 30 seconds until creamy. Add sugar and mix well. Add pumpkin and mix well. Add vanilla, flour, pumpkin spice and salt. Mix well. Add eggs and mix until just incorporated. Do not over mix. Pour the filling over the baked crust. Tap the pan against the counter to release the air and get rid off air bubbles on the surface. Bake the cheesecake for 35 to 38 minutes. Remove from the oven and let sit at room temperature until completely cool. Refrigerate for at least 2-4 hours—the longer the better. Remove the cheesecake from the pan. Slice and serve. Refrigerate any leftovers for up to two days, in an airtight container. Topping: If desired, top the bars with whipped cream, a dash of ground cloves and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Note: The total time includes the minimum chilling time. If you do not have a pumpkin spice on hand, use 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger + 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves or nutmeg.

Parting Thoughts
The Perfect Thanksgiving WORDS ALISA CATANO FROST
I
t's in the air. In the cool mornings and again in the chilly evenings, fall is upon us, winter right around the corner. We've put together Halloween costumes and made trick-or-treating plans. Up next on the holiday horizon: Thanksgiving, full of family and food and, when we're lucky, the good friends we choose as family. In reminiscing about all the Thanksgivings I've had to date, one that comes to mind that gave me a new holiday perspective was just a few years ago. In September 2012 my sister, Amanda, was inexplicably diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. In her early 30s, extremely healthy and active and with no family history, it was hard to make sense of. She needed surgery immediately which resulted in the removal of about a foot of her lower intestine and subsequently she came out of surgery with a temporary Ileostomy bag. The cancer had metastasized to both her bones and lungs. The cancer on her hip bone made it excruciating to walk and she began to use a cane, walker and wheel chair when necessary. She needed chemotherapy and radiation. Her biggest battles were her immobility due to the pain from walking and her severe weight loss. Her chemotherapy combined with the type of cancer and recent surgery were a perfect storm of inability and desire to eat. Yet there was so much joy surrounding this horrible, life altering event. Her boyfriend, Jason, proposed to her and they set a date for December 21, 2012. That Thanksgiving my sister asked that we have a joint family holiday with her fiance's family and ours. While some of us knew each other from hospital visits and from the waiting room during her surgery, many of us had yet to meet. With family from Orem to South Weber, Draper makes a good mid-point for family events so I got the privilege of hosting Thanksgiving dinner for just over 30 people. With so many people coming, food assignments were doled out and ours were few and easy. My husband prepared two tur-
34

keys, I made my famous sweet potato pie. One bite and I promise, based on history, you'll ask me for the recipe! To seat 30 people, I rearranged my living room and dinning room and was able to fit three tables that seated 10 people a piece. One of my sisters had the idea of fresh flowers in Mason jars tied with ribbons and with that and a little help from traditional decorations, the tables were set. My future brother-in-law's family arrived and we all mingled. We were having appetizers and waiting for Amanda and Jason, the guests of honor, to arrive. We checked in with them. Amanda was sick and slowly but surely rallying to come over. Dinner was ready so she insisted we eat. We blessed the food, and Amanda's health and her and Jason's future together were a focal point of requested blessings. Dinner was great but still no guests of honor. We had dessert and were sure they were about to arrive when Jason's brother, Andy, got the call. They weren't coming. Amanda had tried to be well enough all day to get out of bed and come but she just couldn't. I was instantly deflated. All this time and effort to make this perfect day that SHE had asked for and it was a complete failure. Then a calmness came over me and I realized this day was the perfect day that needed to be. Both families had come together and gotten to know each other. We were bound together by these two embarking on an incredible journey together. Had they been there, they would have been the center of attention, and we would have missed opportunities to get to know each other. Life has taught me that holidays and moments are perfect not because I force them to be but because I allow them to be, no matter how they turn out, and in that is perfection. My wish this Thanksgiving is that no matter who you spend it with or how well your plans fall into place, that you allow yourself to have the perfect day!
