Why Santa Will Never Live Up To The Hype A

ny time an expectation is attached to something that doesn’t come naturally to me (birthday parties, elaborate recipes, hair braids), I get performance anxiety and I freeze. I worry about the possibility of failure before I even start and so when it comes to something like Christmas, the whole hullabaloo feels like a set up. For disappointment. I’m prone to panicking and then over-doing by attempting Christmas morning dazzle in the name of Santa Claus. Which works sometimes. Yes, just sometimes. The evidence lies in the big Barbie Dream House sitting in our basement that’s never been played with. And in the old pictures of a toddler in tears who wanted lip-gloss and got a bike instead. To be clear: they were tears of disappointment. There’s also a past Christmas list or two that detailed “robots that clean rooms” (pretty sure my kid came up with Roomba right there) and “one of Santa’s reindeer”—alas, wishes that could never be filled by a mere-mortal mother with a mere debit card and a budget—and had to be placated with tin robots and plush Rudolphs. The refrain goes something like, “But don’t worry, mom, this has nothing to do with you! I’m asking Santa.” Which is adorable and maddening all at once. I want that kind of belief in them, but I hate the storied archetype of a frantic adult searching the near empty shelves of a toy store on Christmas Eve; I hate that the "Santa ideal" can ruin the meaning of one of the givey-est holidays on the calendar. Because I love to give gifts. I love the feeling it gives me. I love when I get it right and it was just the perfect thing. Or the needed thing. Or something unexpected that just made someone smile. And don’t get me wrong: I love Christmas. I love everything about it: the tree, the carols, the cookies, the books, the movies, the gingerbread, the altogether Yuletide cheer that lights strung on houses and trees can do for the heart (now THAT’S magic—looking at you, Draper Park). But the running around? The trying to make it perfect? That's tough for me to enjoy. But I'm changing that. Right now. This season, I resolve to enjoy the whole process more, and remember the true meaning of the season. And when I start to stress about the possibility of less-than-perfect and Santa-dreams-dashed, I will take a deep breath, pour myself some hot chocolate, and read Shelah’s essay on page 34 about the glory of the Christmas mishap. And then I will turn to the Gift Guide on page 14 and know that with it, I can’t really go wrong. I’ve got this gift-giving thing in the bag. And “Santa” will have nothing on me now. (But for real, does anyone know anyone who needs a Barbie Dream House? This Santa delivers.) Happy Holidays, friends! Open House Ol' St. Nick, one of the five tree carvings along Fort Street.

I

f you look closely, you’ll spot Ol’ St. Nick, the Three Wise Men and Father Time residing in mulberry and elm trees along Fort Street. “People either know they’re there or they don’t,” says Draper resi-

dent Michelle Shaw about the five bearded men (also known as tree spirits or green men) which have been carved into trees adjacent to her home. For observant passersby, the carvings enchant or spook, but always make a good photo op. Children’s imaginations run wild. “Little kids wonder if the tree is magical or if the tree ate someone.” Her own five children were fearful of the trees as youngsters, but Shaw assured them that the faces were a protection. Completed in the early 90s, they were crafted by master carver and Sandy resident David S. Paul. He teaches woodcarving skills in community education courses with Canyons School District. “It is ancient, Medieval folklore,” says Paul about the faces. Trained by master woodcarvers in Germany, he has sculpted giant tree spirits throughout the valley. He carves what inspires him--mostly characters from the Brothers Grimm fairytales or European folklore. “I don’t do grizzly bears,” he notes. Such carvings are not simply art, explains Paul, but have historical significance. Green men were a key element in pagan conversions to Christianity. Monks in the eighth and ninth centuries tried to entice pagans into their churches to no avail. It was only by bringing the carvings into monasteries as a pagan icon (the green man representing rebirth) that converts began to flock. The Cistercian monks sculpted green men into wooden beams and posts in early wooden churches throughout Europe. Today, most European churches are made of stone; however, hidden somewhere in most, one can typically find a carving of green man in an obscure place near the rib vaults.

Woodcarver David S. Paul stands next to the Three Wise Men he carved into trees along Fort Street.

In his 45 years of sculpting, Paul has never lost a tree to his craft,

but noted that the carvings themselves need maintenance. One carved tree on the Shaw’s property, “The Viking," was cut down for safety reasons, but the family keeps the carving on a platform in their cabin. Soon new homes will be built on the vacant lot where the old men dwell, but the trees will remain if all goes as planned. The Shaws plan to spotlight the carvings during the holidays and delight in the fact that Paul’s art can be enjoyed year round. “We are known as the family with faces on their trees,” says Shaw. “That’s a good thing to be known for.”

Five Questions For Children’s Book Author Caralyn Beuhner

Local Husband And Wife Team Delight With Their Snowmen Series INTERVIEW BROOKE BENTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

1

For more from the Beuhners, visit BuehnerBooks.com

YOU WRITE THE BOOKS AND YOUR HUSBAND ILLUSTRATES-HOW DID THAT COME TO BE? WAS THERE ALWAYS A DREAM OF COLLABORATING?

2

Mark and I met as college students. I was amazed at his talent and felt that his choice to pursue art was natural, but neither one of us envisioned doing what we are doing. We moved to New York City after Mark’s graduation, hoping that he could find general illustration work. We quickly found that he was one of thousands of artists all wanting editorial or advertising jobs, and the few jobs that he secured provided only minimal income. At the time it was difficult, but we look back on that period now with a more grateful perspective, because not having other work meant that when the opportunity came up to do a picture book, Mark was more than willing to give it a try, and ended up finding the perfect place to use his talents and ideas. It wasn't a conscious decision for me to write, and is still a peripheral part of my life. I'm more of a reader, and am perfectly happy to relax with a stack of other people's books... It was Mark who pulled me into the business with him--bless him! He was already publishing, and urged me to write a story and collaborate with him.

22

Draper Lifestyle | December 2015

WHEN DID YOU MOVE TO DRAPER? WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE? ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM THE AREA?

Mark and I both grew up in Salt Lake City in the Sugarhouse area. We love the Salt Lake valley, and while living away definitely felt the call of both family and mountains. We both grew up in older homes, and lived in lovely older homes in Sugarhouse when we moved back to Utah. Over the years our family outgrew those homes, and we found our home in Draper when looking for more space to accommodate our family. It fits our natures because it’s a lovely historic home (the oldest yet–the Isaac Stewart pioneer home built in 1857) but one which finally has the space we need. We live near Draper Historic Park; our children stop at the Sorenson home to buy penny candy on the way home from school; they walk home past horses and cows, and it feels like we stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. We have especially loved how long-time residents of Draper–many with roots extending back to original settlers--have been so welcoming. Mark and I are the parents of nine children, seven of whom still live in the home. We love having a big family, and it has certainly helped us to keep up with the children’s picture book market.

3

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR SNOWMEN BOOKS?

That’s actually a great story! If you look inside the back cover of a hardback edition of Snowmen at Night, you will see a small photograph of a snowman. This is a snowman that Mark and the kids built one night in the front yard of the house we were living in at the time, which was in Sugarhouse. It was evening, and after building the snowman, we all trooped inside and went to bed. The next morning Mark went out to get the newspaper off of the porch--and there was the snowman. It had moved all the way across the front yard, was turned around facing the front door, and was holding a can of soup. It was delightful and hilarious, and I’m glad that Mark thought to snap a picture, because as I retold the story of this prank to people it sparked the idea for the poem that became Snowmen at Night, which has been our best-selling book. The success of the book and the enjoyment Mark had in painting it has naturally led to sequels. Mark is currently working on a fifth book in the series, due out in 2017.

5

4

TELL ME ABOUT THE HIDDEN PICTURES IN THE SNOWMEN BOOKS! HOW DID THOSE COME ABOUT? ARE THERE HIDDEN PICTURES IN ALL YOUR BOOKS?

All of Mark’s books have always had hidden pictures. It began back in 1990 with the creation of The Adventures of Taxi Dog, in which he painted a cat in every scene. The next two books had hidden cats, and so on. Some books have eight or nine different things to find on each page, but most of the books have a cat, rabbit and T-Rex. Some of the Snowmen books also have a Santa face or extra snowmen. The hidden pictures are an extra surprise that can take the reader back again and again. Sometimes they are so hard to find that people have to ask Mark for help. The most recent books have an answer key printed inside the dust jacket.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE BUEHNERS?

We have a new book out this year, which is exciting for us, titled Merry Christmas, Mr. Mouse. It's a Christmas story about how a family of house mice discover the meaning and joy of Christmas as they

puzzle over and finally imitate all of the joyous fun happening in the house upstairs. It has Mark’s signature rich, warm paintings that perfectly capture the magic of Christmas.

uddenly you find yourself ready to choose a new piece of jewelry. And all you know about carats is that your mom made you eat them when you were little. But you don’t really need to be a diamond expert. You just need to go to people who are: JP Lee Fine Jewelry.

You’ll never really be lost as long as you can find your way to JP Lee’s Fine Jewelry.

JP Lee controls every diamond, every step of the way and only selects those that meet his high standards. In addition, each diamond is mounted and polished by hand, in settings selected as carefully as the diamonds themselves. Still don’t know carats from carrots? That’s okay.

Spectacular Local Limelight

The

Willow Tree

A MUST-SEE CHRISTMAS DESTINATION FOR ALL OF UTAH

ARTICLE KELLY ERICKSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

n an open field at Draper Park, the grand willow tree is an illuminated spectacle of Christmas joy and hope in December. This imposing showpiece and the numerous lighting displays throughout the city are making Draper a must-see destination during the holidays. The willow tree first made its Christmas debut in 2008 when the parks department used colored flood lights to illuminate it. However, it was not very impressive, according to Steve Linde, the parks director. Fast forward one year, and an evolution in extravagant lighting began to take shape when the city decided to light up the willow tree like it belonged on Temple Square, with strands adorning each branch of the large, billowing tree. Every year got better, culminating in the addition of strobe lights last year that create an awesome effect. Over 65,000 lights decorate the willow tree, according to Brite Nites, the company that has installed the lights for the city for the past couple of years and will once again be doing it for 2015. Not only will Draper Park receive a VIP lighting treatment, but several roundabouts, the bridge, and the Draper Historic Park will also be decked out in the shimmer and shine. 26

Draper Lifestyle | December 2015

“The city council provides a certain amount of funding and owns all of the lights so we can expand easily without spending a lot of money. The City Council has a regular line item that they approve for Christmas decor,” says Linde. Without spending too much, the city has maximized their resources with LED lighting that uses a lot less electricity and adding new lights incrementally to their stockpile. This year Draper will wrap another large tree that hovers over the swing sets in the playground area. The lights come on at dusk and stay on until midnight. Then they relight from 5-7 a.m. every morning unless dampness is foreseen. In that case, the parks director keeps the lights on through the night, so that they do not short out. The extensive lighting is a huge hit for the community and word is getting out due to social media platforms and old-fashioned word of mouth. The city has even received inquiries from around the country. “This is unique and it has brought a lot of people to Draper,” notes Rhett Ogden, the Parks and Recreation director. “Businesses like it because they bring a lot of people from out of town. And it is always at dinnertime that they show up.”

“It does make you just kind of soak in the spirit. I really do love it. We are always dragging the kids and grandkids over there. Sometimes we go sleigh on the hill. It is so cool. In fact we have friends from St. George and other far places who ask us about the lights and want to come see them. Everybody is always looking for some place to take their family and kids that is not expensive.” says long time resident Renee VanAmen. The willow tree, also known as the Tree of Lights, the Tree of Life, and even the big white tree, is becoming a treasured landmark for the community. Draper resident Shawna Borg shared this precious story about her son Owen. “When he was 9 years old, he was sick a lot (nothing too serious) during the winter and the only way he would say it would make him feel better was if I took him to the big white tree. I have a picture of all of my boys running out to the big white tree because he was convinced if he went out and got close to the tree it would make him feel better. He even went out and said a little prayer by the tree.” There will be a fun-filled lighting ceremony on Monday, November 30, including pictures with Santa, hay rides, and free hot chocolate.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS Parting Thoughts

WHEN MISHAP LEADS TO MEMORY WORDS SHELAH MASTNY MINER

I

grew up in a home where the presentation of a gift was as important as what the box held inside. At Christmas, my mom and her best friend, my godmother Annie, would lock themselves up in a bedroom with footlockers full of wrapping paper and ribbon, sharp scissors, red pens, and an ironing board to make sure that no bows drooped on their watch. They spent hours writing messages on the gift tags to clue the receiver into what was inside the package, and they often spoke in hushed tones about the “secret code” they had to ensure that a present never got mixed up and they always knew what was inside. I’m a low-maintenance girl, but I have kept up the wrapping tradition. And tonight, if I can somehow manage to haul up my drawers of ribbon and garbage cans full of wrapping paper, I may turn my bedroom into Santa’s Workshop and get started. It’s been nearly two decades since I figured out that the “secret code” had nothing to do with the pattern of the wrapping paper or the color of the ribbon tied to the package. Just like my mom and godmother, I write on the bottom of each package in tiny little letters who it’s for and what’s inside. At least, usually I do. Last Christmas, between graduate school deadlines and preparing for family and the all-consuming stress of our adoption taking up every spare thought, I was less organized than usual. My parents and my sister’s family were arriving two days before Christmas (which is my daughter’s birthday), so I told my family that if they mailed me their presents, I would wrap them and then we would do the “tagging and bowing” together. It was my nephew Sam’s first Christmas, so everyone was going overboard, and nearly every day something arrived in the mail for him, including (another family tradition) a personalized stoneware baby plate with his name, birth date, and all of his birth stats. I wrapped it up along with all the rest.

On Christmas Eve morning, my mom and sister and I locked the bedroom door and unloaded every gift from my closet. Using the “secret code” we spent the morning writing clues, cracking each other up with our witty comments. And then we came to a package that was completely unmarked. I shook it, but it didn’t sound like Legos. I wracked my brain, but finally, there was nothing to do but open the gift. So I did. And inside, I found the coat, hat, gloves and sweater I’d bought for the Sub for Santa our ward does each year. The only problem? I’d delivered the Sub for Santa present several days earlier, and I knew the gifts had already been distributed. Like my mother before me, I am a list keeper. I always wondered why I kept a spreadsheet with every Christmas gift I give each year, since I’ve never had an opportunity to refer to it, but that Christmas Eve morning, my mom and I both whipped out our lists. Was the man whose name I’d chosen off the ward tree getting a Razor scooter? A flat-screen tv? A woman’s sweater? While all of those would have been awkward and unusual gifts, the package sitting under his tree was even less useful– it was Sam’s baby plate. An expensive and meaningful gift for my sister, but utterly useless to anyone else. And so I placed a few calls, and we tracked down the giftee. My dad ran across town and braved the indignity of asking for the present back (he did have the right one to give instead). And my sister was none the wiser on Christmas morning (at least until now). While we all hope to create good, lasting memories for our families that come from family togetherness and spiritual experiences, some of the best Christmas memories come from the oops moments and the mishaps.
