ave you heard this one? Kids! I don't know what's wrong with these kids today! Kids! Who can understand anything they say? Kids! They are disobedient, disrespectful oafs! Noisy, crazy, sloppy, lazy, loafers! While we're on the subject: Kids! You can talk and talk till your face is blue! Kids! But they still just do what they want to do! Why can't they be like we were, Perfect in every way? What's the matter with kids today? I’m not sure how it was back then in the 1960’s, Bye Bye Birdie-era, but now, in 2016, I will tell you what’s the matter with kids: They are awesome. Which is convenient. Because at Draper Lifestyle magazine, we are all about awesome. In this issue we celebrate this awesomeness with the inclusion of Kids Who Rock. Several of these kids hail from local music school Rock U—and really rock it on the guitar—while several others rock different things: school, tests, tennis, kendama, climbing walls. Whether literal or figurative, they are all rock stars. And I am impressed. I found myself thinking about these kids long after the questionnaires and profiles were turned in. Certain details just stuck: the photograph of a little blond rocker with hair in ringlets, whose guitar seems as big as she is; a high school sophomore who already has her sights set on becoming a speech-writer; a champion pole-vaulter and golfer, both of whom just wanted to try something new. These are kids with drive and purpose and goals, kids who are out doing things, and progressing on their own paths to being better. They are kids who are good. So it was of the most poignant sort of irony that while in the midst of this, I found myself in a group of grown-ups bemoaning the state of the world. My takeaway from the discussion was that the world and where it’s headed is something that should be feared, and the worry came from things unknown, things we have no control over, things that felt out of our hands. But I feel comfortable letting go; I will happily relinquish my hold. Because I see the kids in these pages—and kids everywhere—and I see the goodness and abundance of their lives, the willingness to work and do, and these simple things give me hope. So while the issue of “what’s the matter with kids these days” and what the future holds can seem problematic, I’m not certain that’s the case. The way I see it, the only real problem here is space constraints, and that in running a kids issue we can’t include more kids. I wish we had a zillion pages. Happy October! GOLF PHENOM By Katie Boman Tyse Boman started playing golf last summer at age seven. After watching his older brother play in a junior tournament, he begged his dad to let him start playing. His dad finally agreed, and in his first tournament, he shot a 40 and took 3rd place and loved the game instantly. In his sixth tournament he got his first win, shooting a one over par 37, winning by five shots. That win also earned him some new clubs from dad. This year as an eight year old, he qualified for the Utah Junior State Amateur Match Play in the 10 year old division. He made it to the final eight. He has had six first place finishes this year, including the SLC Junior Championship. He won the Utah PGA's Junior Player of the Year award for his division. His favorite part of golf is making long putts which he spends a lot of time practicing at Hidden Valley Country

n October 24, 2015, Mackay Dunn sat in the stands at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum watching the Utah Utes get thumped by USC, ending their run at a perfect season. But Dunn was not upset, he was inspired. He had been avidly following the Utes every game and at that moment he had an epiphany. He knew he could play with these guys. “I saw the other players and thought that I could easily compete with them.” In December, he emailed the coaches and also talked to some of the players he knew. Austin Lee and Harrison Hanley encouraged him to go for it. They thought he could do it too. Mackay Dunn was a high school standout. He spent the majority of his childhood in Draper and started playing football as a gremlin when he was eight years old. He played running back the majority of the time and in his sophomore year, he switched to cornerback. One of his greatest football moments in high school was in a game against Jordan when they threw it deep, close to the end zone, and Dunn intercepted the ball by making a diving catch, clinching a win for his team. When he graduated, Dunn had offers to play at some of the smaller state schools, but opted to go to Utah State University in order to get a better education. He played on the team for then head coach Gary Andersen (who is now the head coach at Oregon State), but it only lasted a few weeks. “It just wasn’t a good fit. But it did help me to make the decision to go on a mission.” Initially, Mackay was not really considering a mission. However, because he did not continue with the team, his focus changed and he knew he needed to serve. Mackay was called to the Buenos Aires, Argentina mission. “I was surprised most by how easy it was to be dedicated to it and to follow the rules. I realized why I was doing it and it was easy to be obedient.” Dunn flourished while he served in South America. It was preparation and training he never realized he would need for the next chapter of his life, the football chapter. He returned in March 2015 and in the fall enrolled at the U, not even considering football. But the season sparked the desire in him again. With the email to the Utah coaches, Coach Fred Whittingham contacted him a little while later and offered him a walk-on tryout in February. Dunn had worked hard to get back into shape in the year he had returned from his mission and to recover from a shoulder injury. Tryouts were held at the Spence Eccles Field House. All prospective players were meticulously screened by the training staff and paperwork was completed to be compliant with the NCAA. Then it was time to hit the field. The tryout was only 45 minutes long and trainers and a few of the players stood on the sideline to watch. Dunn did a shuttle run, jumping exercises, agility drills and the 40 yard sprint in 4.49 seconds, a blazing fast time. When the tryout was over, the prospective walk-ons huddled up and were told that if they made the team, they would get a call in the next three to four weeks. Much to his surprise, Mackay’s phone rang on a Sunday, only five days later. He was the only walk-on who had made the team. Dunn, a high school standout at cornerback, had picked the perfect year to try out. The Utes were low on corners and Mackay Dunn’s instincts had been right. He could play with these guys.

Now that the Utes football season has started, Mackay has worked hard over the past six months, giving his life to football and schoolwork as he majors in Business Administration. Dunn says that college football life has been a great experience. “There is great camaraderie with the team. Everyone is very nice.” The football program is top-notch, with a positive and inclusive atmosphere. Mackay was quickly integrated into the team from the very beginning. They work hard together conditioning, practicing and studying the game, preparing for a difficult season this year in the PAC-12. Dunn will play on special teams, a great example of what you can accomplish when you work hard and just go for it.

n 2009 Jared Barney founded Rock University Guitar School in Draper with the desire to pass on the gift of

guitar to others. “Our program is designed to not just teach guitar, it is designed to develop confidence and self-esteem in each student," states Jared. It was with this idea in mind that “Rock U Live” was born. “We wanted to create a forum that would not only showcase the talent of the students, but also give them the opportunity to grow as people. We didn’t want it to be

just a normal recital. We wanted it to be a rock show. Then out of nowhere my teacher Jared grabs me and throws me up on his shoulders. It really was the best way to end my performance. I will always remember that day. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO PLAY GUITAR? round 150 local kids took advantage of a visionary new athletic program this summer. Draper Track and Field held its inaugural season at the Corner Canyon High School track, exposing kids ages eight to 14 to a wide variety of track and field events. For eight weeks, kids rotated through pole vault, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, javelin and running events from the 100 meters to the mile. Draper Track and Field is a much needed program for kids who want to do athletics, but may not necessarily fit into the typical sports model. Not every kid plays football, soccer, basketball or baseball. And the reality is that with only one high school in Draper, there just is not room for all of the athletic talent the city holds. So what about the rest of the kids who want to compete, but don’t know where to go? Utah native Nan Kennard, who recently moved here from Boulder, Colorado, is the founder of Draper Track and Field. Her running accomplishments are legendary. She was an AllAmerican in the steeplechase and three-time national champion as a member of the cross country team at BYU, Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon, and professional runner. It would be safe to say that Kennard has the running chops, but it really came by chance. In high school, she was one of those kids left on the outside. “I got cut from the high school basketball team when I was a freshman. I was sure that my world was crushed and that my life was over.” She decided to run track instead. A mediocre sprinter in the ninth grade, it was not until her junior year that she started to catch fire when she switched to longer distances, capping it off with a blistering state record 800m time of 2:11. Fortunately for Draper, Kennard is bringing all of her considerable experience and expertise to this new track program and she has a long-term vision for the youth here, hoping to create a feeder program for the high school, where kids are exposed to

all events and can have the time to figure out what they are good at. As she astutely points out, Utah valley and Davis County both have strong feeder programs for their high schools and so when kids start their freshman year, they have a huge advantage over kids from the Salt Lake valley who come into high school with little, if any, experience. There is no district funded middle school program and until this year, no where for kids to just try it out. The summer program is meant to be a laid back season. The kids are encouraged to try all the events offered and they are measured at every practice so that they can see their improvement. Many kids started this season with a preconceived notion of what they could do, but oft times were surprised to discover other things that they loved and could do even better. “Some kids who thought they would run distance found a love for jumping or throwing. Some really enjoyed sprinting, when they thought they would just throw. The synergy of the events kind of encouraged them to do something they hadn't originally chosen,” Kennard explains. The summer program has spilled into the fall with the creation of Race Cats, a cross country program Nan Kennard created for elementary children K-5. In the interest of keeping it fun, they do a few weekly practices where they play games that require a lot of running. Then in October there are races every week, ranging from a 1K to a 3K. It is a new program she hopes to establish at all of the elementary schools in the city. It doesn’t stop there. Based on the many events the kids have tried during the summer session, Kennard is starting a competitive track team in the spring. Kids will be able to focus on their three favorite events and compete in track competitions in the area they think they might want to specialize in. It is a wonderful opportunity to gain experience in the track and field world before they step onto a high school campus.

he night before Halloween meant one thing at our suburban New Jersey home. My mom brought her Japanese lantern inside. Every other day of the year, it stood outside like an exotic beauty basking in the sun. Constructed of three pieces of cast iron, the pedestal lantern had a large compartment for a candle, secured by a small latch. Its top fanned out like an umbrella someone had stepped on. My mom feared that the spooks who smashed pumpkins after dark on October 30—Fright Night—would easily overturn lawn decorations, too. This outside ornament complimented my mom’s collection of similar artwork inside the home: Japanese woodblock prints, a Buddha hand gesturing the Vitarka mudra, and a silk tapestry depicting graceful white egrets. All were treasures from my mom’s Far East travels and highlighted her admiration of Japanese simplicity and her affinity for the Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism. Like her lantern, mom was standout in suburbia. After moving from New Jersey to Salt Lake City, the lantern languished. Perhaps the dry climate didn’t agree with the Japanese beauty or maybe my mom simply forgot about it during the move. It sat in the garage, dismantled, its black sheen slowly fading like invisible ink. Decades later, I rediscovered the lantern and rejoiced as if I had found the jewel of the Orient. I dusted off the spider webs and placed the lantern safely in my Draper backyard amongst the wild rye grass—a slice of Asia on a desert plate. Although now safely away from mischievous spooks, the lantern is not immune to the damage of weather demons. Around Halloween time, I wash off autumn’s dander and refresh the lantern with a coating of RustOleum Rust Reformer paint. I continue the role of protector. My mom guarded the lantern and, in doing so, help set the foundation for my love of Asian art and, more specifically, my love and collection of Japanese lanterns. I now have several. But sometimes, I do wonder: What would my artistic tastes be like if she had collected garden gnomes?
