e got Emily when I was in the fifth grade. My tears over something or other at home meant my parents dragged me along on a pre-Christmas errand to a breeder. It was supposed to be a surprise for us kids, but instead, I got to choose our puppy. Really, she chose me.

I can still see my denim-covered knees against an old sheet on the breeder’s floor, and the mess and dazzle and craze of a litter of Border Collies, and how Emily ran right to me, all brown and soft, a lick of white in the middle of her forehead, eyes that seemed human and kind. She was a true companion—loyal and sweet and smelly—and remains planted in at least the periphery of all my childhood memories: just there, meek and waiting, or fighting baths or wanting to sit in the front seat, the window rolled down. I was a grown-up by the time she died. I had two children of my own, a different sort of mess and dazzle and craze in a tiny house in the snow, two states away. Still, my dad’s voice cracked on the phone when he told me, and I sobbed great loud cries into his ear. Emily was our pooch, a true part of our family, and I loved her dearly.

As such, we’ve collected a lot of pet stories: the dog that ate all the Halloween candy; the hamster that climbed up a hole in the wall and emerged days later; the time we (surprise!) had seven kittens; the puppy that arrived the same week as the newborn baby… You have these stories too. That awww-inducing goodness starts on page 20. If that’s not enough for you, dive deeper into more animal goodness at The Living Planet, page 22. And if you’re just getting started on this animal-loving journey, page 14 is the place for you.

Since then, I’ve come to insist I’m not an animal person, even as my home suggests otherwise. Between my reptile-loving son, dog-loving daughter and the cats that just keep showing up, we’ve had more pets than I can count on both hands.

is an ease.” She and Minson recommend looking for a happy dog with a calm mental state—one who is play-driven and seeks out human contact. If possible, look at the sire and dam to judge temperament. 5. UNDERSTAND THE BREED’S GENERAL NATURE.
While each dog is unique, some breed generalizations can be made. For instance, terriers are little bundles of TNT and can be problematic for first-time dog owners. “I’ve known families that have never seen their terrier sleep,” Minson notes. Chows can be aloof, like cats. Bulldog pups are cute, but grow into 70 lb. bricks, have gas and snore. Vizslas are energetic and if cooped inside “they’ll be up walking on your shelves.” 6. QUESTION THE UNKNOWN.
Minson and Phillipps support rescue adoptions but believe potential adopters of shelter animals must ask, “Why is this dog at the rescue?” In Minson’s experience, many are not truthfully surrendered and an unresolved (but not unmanageable) behavior problem may exist. Minson recommends a “pre-purchase” evaluation with a professional. “Take the advice,” he says, adding that a professional can assess the dog, how the pet will fit into the home and provide training information. 7. LOOK AT MUTTS/CROSSBREEDS.
Do you want a dog that lives a long time, will eat anything, love your children and be steady, asks Minson. Then, consider a mutt or crossbreed. Purebreds are not the only option for joyful dog ownership. 8. LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR NEW DOG.
“It’s the best gift you’ll ever give yourself and

your dog,” says Minson. Spaying or neutering reduces certain cancers, including testicular in males, and eliminates problems such as unwanted/dangerous pregnancy, running away, panting, pacing, and urinating on everything. Dog 2 Dog offers in-house training as well as group classes. Pre-purchase consultations are available. Contact Dog2DogTraining.com or 801-916-4221.

he Ballard home is long gone, razed by the city to make way for the 132nd South expansion at Fort Street. But all was not demol-
ished. The root cellar remains, a place as important to that long-time Draper farming family as the home itself. Wayne Ballard, one of three living original family members, remembers the cellar filled with salted pork and fruit jars. His father Ross built it 90+ years ago. Wayne and his wife, Alice, who live just east of Ballard’s Corner, acquired the cellar when the city bought the property. The cellar is a testament to his dad’s craftsmanship. Sturdy, tongueand-groove shelving remains, and the cement walls, poured in layers, show no cracking. Barrels of leftover wheat from his parent’s time are still viable and ready for bread making.
“When father told us to build a new head gate, he didn’t tell us how to do it. We simply went and built it. If he said go kill a sheep for the winter, we’d do it without being shown how. We had to use our heads.”
“After walking home from Draper School, we’d go there, and if we were hungry, we’d grab a pint of fruit to eat in its coolness,” re-

Wayne dedicates one acre of his property to a garden where he grows seven crops of corn, Moscow-variety tomatoes, and his pride and joy—12-pound cantaloupes, the seeds of which he’s used for 28 years. “I’ve been a farmer all my life. I can’t get it out of my system,” he says with a slight The Ballard home (now gone) that most people remember on the corner of Fort Street and 132nd South.

To honor their parents’ legacy, the Ballard family plans to erect a small marker
with the inscription “Ballard’s Corner Memorial.” It will stand as a tribute to a hard working, generous Draper family and a cherished bygone era.

A RECYCLING DUO WITH HIS BROTHER, MARSHMALLOW
Gerbils weren’t the first pet choice for 10-year-old Britta Charnholm, but that’s what she got when her mom rescued two from the Humane Society of Utah. “I am glad they have a good home with us,” she said about the brothers named Marshmallow and Ginger. Britta loves holding them and watching them run around the living room. While cute and small, they are noisy—typically at night—running on their squeaky wheel. Because gerbils need to keep their teeth in top condition, Britta regularly supplies them with cardboard boxes, which are chewed up with great gusto. “They are our recycling bins.”
A CUTE, SQUISHY FACE
At five years old, Alex Witt knew he wanted a dog. “He was consistent and persistent,” says his dad. “By seven he was asking everyday.” So his parents spent two years searching for the right dog. Then they found Agis, a Chinese Shar-Pei. It’s been love ever since for the family, but especially for Alex, now 10. Despite Agis snoring, they both sleep contentedly together. “I can hug him at midnight,” adds Alex. Agis is easy-going, plays hard when asked, but is also the perfect couch potato. The four Witt children, Christian, 14, Alex, McKenley, 8, and Gabby, 2, love feeling his squishy face. Agis enjoys four-wheeling and climbing the specially installed ramp to swim in the above-ground pool. Every morning Agis acts as the family’s alarm clock—pulling off covers and licking faces to get everyone up and going. abby has been getting a lot of attention lately. If you go and visit her, you might notice a bit of pink on the outer edge of her shell.
You see, Gabby is a loggerhead sea turtle who lives in the 280,000 gallon shark tank at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium. She is swimming and eating like normal, but her caretakers are keeping a watchful eye on her. The aquarists can never be too careful when it comes to sick sea creatures in a confined space. Fortunately, the caretakers at the aquarium are conscientious stewards who know their stuff and one of those caretakers is Dr. Martin Orr, a man who probably has one of the coolest jobs in all of Utah. Orr is the official veterinarian for the Loveland Aquarium located in a prominent spot off of the I-15 in Draper, Utah. He has been a veterinarian for the past 25 years, specializing in exotic animals, and owns Creekside Animal Hospital on 12720 Pony Express Drive, about one mile down the road from the aquarium. Every Thursday morning, you will find Dr. Orr making the rounds at the beautiful and spacious new aquarium, a must-see attraction for any visitor or resident. This Thursday, Dr. Orr has come to check on the animals from each area. Dr. Orr does not check every single animal. He consults with the animal coordinators and they show him which animals need extra attention. Gabby is at the top of the list. “The loggerhead turtle has an infection, some kind of shell rot. She is moving around well and eating also. She is looking a little bit better. There is still some redness on the ridges, which should be a uniform brown color. I’m not sure what it is. She had the same thing a few years ago and responded well to medication, but not quite as well this time. A few weeks ago I did a blood draw and the results were pretty unremarkable. That is why we are not worried about it.” “The challenge of caging animals is that you are also caging diseases. Animals are exposed to more things because it is a closed environment. CONTINUED >

Visitors can sit and observe the undulation of fish species gliding effortlessly through each large window pane, an aquatic symphony of tails, gills, and refracting light. A fluctuation of excited children with their oohs and aahs and pensive observers permeate the atmosphere of the room as it alternates betweens chaotic school groups to a church-like atmosphere. Whatever the audience is that is standing in front of the glass, the graceful sea creatures are a mesmerizing sight. Unlike sharks that enjoy a concierge aquarium lifestyle, it is a different scenario with river otters. Keepers will hide food in many different places to make feeding time a challenge. They put the food high up in the tree, behind rocks, in the water and inside round balls that are difficult to open. Feeding times differ daily. They do this to keep the otters active and interested or they would just lie around all day and do nothing.

Love Life, Live Life, Give Life You have never really lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. ARTICLE KELLY ERICKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
T
his is a true love story three times over. Two happy endings and another one in the works…hopefully. Chad and Rick Smith are identical twins and there was always a plan. When his kidneys gave out, Chad’s brother Rick would give him a kidney and the problem would be solved. But sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. Chad, who was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy in 2009 now needs a kidney and in the past few months discovered that Rick (who will eventually develop the same disease) cannot donate. Now Chad has to wait on the transplant list or hope to find a living donor brave and generous enough to give him a kidney and a second chance at health and life. Vicki Hortin knows all about second chances. On May 2, 2014, Hortin was reborn when she received the best gift of her life, a new kidney from a friend. Hortin’s health had declined rapidly and two months before the transplant she received scary news.
“All of a sudden doctors said I had to have both kidneys taken out and had to go on dialysis. Dialysis was just very scary, but keeping the kidneys in caused lots of infections and crowding. I was not sure what to do because I didn’t have a new kidney.” After prayerful consideration, Hortin took a leap of faith and had the kidneys removed before she had a guaranteed kidney transplant. The diseased kidneys weighed a staggering 17 pounds. Then she started dialysis 5 hours a day, three times per week. It was very rough and a frightening time for her. But a new kidney was in the works due to the incredible generosity of Corinne Harryman. Harryman and Hortin had met 6 years before at a Relief Society activity at an LDS church when they sat together. Hortin and her family had just moved in two months before from Riverton on a whim, or so it seemed. As the two began talking, Hortin told Harryman that one day she would need a CONTINUED >

“I am alive! I did it!” Lisa attests, “I would do it all over again if I could. I have no regrets, not even the scar.” kidney. According to Vicki, she remembers Corinne Harryman enthusiastically telling her that she would give her a kidney. “I don’t remember telling her that,” Harryman reveals. But she probably did. This is because many years before, Corinne had every intention of donating her kidney to save her father’s life. “I was praying and asking for my dad to live. Let him live! I got my off knees and had the impression to donate. It was a clear answer.” She just knew she was the match. Harryman went through the tests and got a phone call in the midst of it telling her she had been rejected and she was incredulous. “I was not compatible with his transplanted pancreas he had received a few years before and I was ticked. My dad was dying and I couldn’t save him. I had a crystal clear heavenly answer, but then I began to doubt everything.” She prayed again, and knew she would donate, just not yet. Another family member did end up donating to save her father and prolong his life for many more years, but it was not until Corinne was perusing Facebook in August 2013 and saw a transplant acceptance letter for Vicki Hortin that she recognized the answer to her prayer. Immediately, Harryman got an overwhelming feeling that this was it. She didn’t tell anyone at first and initiated the testing. The journey was quite long to verify that they were compatible in every way. Miraculously, every milestone was passed and the transplant center approved Corinne’s kidney. Vicky Hortin had her miracle, a live kidney from her heaven-sent friend. 26
Draper Lifestyle | February 2016
With an incredible amount of courage fueled by love, Corinne Harryman went into the operating room side by side with Vicki Hortin and gave her the gift of life. The results were immediate for Hortin. Her recovery was astounding and as soon as she woke up from surgery she felt whole again. She hadn’t felt that good for 10 years. According to Harryman, “The transplant was brutal and wonderful at the same time, equivalent to giving birth.” Two weeks later, the two friends went for a walk together. Harryman and Hortin were strangers who became friends, but for Lisa Wheat kidney donation was strictly a family affair. Wheat, who lives a few doors down from Harryman, is another giver of life. In December 2014, Lisa Wheat and her niece Samantha Ruggles entered the University of Utah Transplant Center ready for surgery. Ruggles, a 22 year-old BYU graduate had learned only 6 months prior that she was in kidney failure and needed a transplant. It was shocking news because she always felt okay and was never really sick like Hortin. It was hard to comprehend the gravity of the situation, but it was life-threatening. When the family found out, several people requested the packet in order to be tested. At first, Lisa did not think she would qualify because of their age differential and the fact that she is A(-) and Samantha is A(+). But she soon learned that neither fact disqualifies a donor and so she started the testing process. There are tons of blood tests, psychological evaluations, a mammogram, CAT scan,
Bring In Your Family To Try Out Utah’s Best Of State Health Club Right Here In Draper
and interviews with loved ones. The transplant center does not rush through the testing. It is exceptionally thorough. Then there are the doubts and fears that can creep in to any normal person about to give away a vital organ. Lisa was no exception. “I got scared to death when I was cleared by the transplant center and it was solely my decision.” Wheat researched inspiring donation stories online, she went to church, she met with her bishop and also received a blessing. The fears subsided and she felt peace. Then at a family dinner Lisa gave Samantha the good news. She was giving her a kidney. The surgery took 4 to 5 hours and when Lisa awoke she was extremely happy. “I am alive! I did it!” Lisa attests, “I would do it all over again if I could. I have no regrets, not even the scar.” The scar is actually quite tiny and is just beneath the belly button. “It was a rewarding experience, although it was never on my bucket list. It always feels good when you serve or sacrifice.” These are two perfect love stories with perfect endings, where hearts and kidneys are forever knit together. The Smith’s are also hoping for a perfect love story this Valentine’s season, as are 508 other Utahn’s who are currently on the transplant registration list. When someone donates a kidney, that selfless act of love can never be repaid. Both donor and recipient step into the unknown, but it is a hopeful place fueled by prayers and faith. If you have contemplated kidney donation, you can visit YesUtah.org for more information.
