Cruising into Summer

JUNE 2016 publisher

I

n her feature piece on classic cars, Linnea Lundgren writes this to describe one local’s truth:

“Life has always appeared to pivot around automobiles in significant ways.” And while first struck by how opposite this is for me, and how cars seem to figure so peripherally in my memories, suddenly I’m drawn back to places where this roars to life.

Standing, a little tot myself, on the front row bench in my parents car in motion; driving a tiny Fiat around the tight corners of a road that hung against the high rugged edges of the Amalfi coast; sitting on the back of a motorcycle in Portugal manned by a kid who would end up being my husband; the first time I drove my big "mom car" on a long road trip all by myself—just me and the kids; the first time I got a mom car. Or how now, these days, my oldest daughter learns to drive. And how she drove herself somewhere the other day, and how I swapped her seats to drive away and said goodbye to her out the window, and she spun away, the first flecks of summer sun glinting off the ponytail spilling down her back. Cars take us forward—but backward too, and life is a highway indeed: another school year behind us, and summer upon us. Which, to me, means one thing: more memories to drive into.

SLC COMIC CON, A CELEBRATION OF ALL THOSE NERDY THINGS WE SECRETLY LOVE ARTICLE KELLY ERICKSON PHOTOGRAPHY MEREDITH FORREST KULWICKI

A

s Dan Farr winds his way through the massive convention floor at the Salt Palace, many people stop and stare or work up the courage to ask for a picture with him. Other people just say thank you or tell him how awesome it all is. Then there are those people who talk to him and have absolutely no idea who he is. It doesn’t matter. For this weekend, the Salt Palace is his living room and he has invited everyone to party and have a great time. In 2013, Dan Farr and his business partner, Bryan Brandenburg, took a big risk by bringing pop culture to the valley, orchestrating the inception of Salt Lake Comic Con from Farr’s house in Draper. A seasoned entrepreneur, Farr had spent many years developing a software company called DAZ3D, which does 3D illustration and animation. In the last years he was affiliated with the company, he would go to many ComicCon conventions in the United States, selling the software to the artists and attendees. Farr was able to make many connections at Comic Cons, including celebrities like Kevin Sorbo and Lou Ferrigno. “When I went to conventions I didn’t understand what they were, but then realized that it was fun. I got pulled into it. I realized the 14

Draper Lifestyle | June 2016

market for this kind of thing was bigger than just for a super fan.” With personal connections to a few celebrities like Sorbo and Ferrigno and his clout as a successful business owner, Farr had the tools he needed to make Comic Con a reality. Sorbo and Ferrigno knew that he was legitimate and would be able to meet all promised financial obligations and run things properly. Farr and Brandenburg partnered with Utah Media Group, a seasoned company with the systems in place to logistically pull off a major convention. When news of the first Comic Con went out, tickets started to sell fairly well. Lou Ferrigno and Kevin Sorbo were the first major stars who agreed to attend. Then a little while later, Farr was able to book Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, putting a legit stamp on the entire thing. An important aspect of running a Comic Con is networking and Farr is a master networker. He has a natural ability of forging friendships and opening unforeseen doors. As the SLC Comic

Con was just days away from opening and with healthy ticket sales, Farr and Brandenburg were able to book Stan Lee, that guy who created Spiderman, the Hulk, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four and many other fictional comic book characters. In essence, Stan Lee is Comic Con. Farr made this connection through his friendship with Ferrigno. It was an incredible ‘get’ for a first time convention. In the end, the first Comic Con sold out with over 72,000 attendees. Since then, the numbers have only grown. He also aims to set up opportunities for people in the industry without any expectations. For example, he introduced Kevin Sorbo to a production company, and from that introduction Sorbo made four films with them. Unlike the cutthroat world of Hollywood, the Comic Con world is much more fair. Managers, agents, producers and celebrities all work together to help each other, which often results in future projects. Farr ends up collecting a slew of business cards during the convention.

3

The majority of celebrities who appear at Comic Con are incredibly nice and approachable. They really take the time to talk to the fans who pay extra for an autograph or photo. Dan Farr has especially enjoyed working with Jess Harnell, Henry Winkler, Manu Bennett and Jason David Frank, all of whom are exceptionally nice and grounded. A difficult and egotistical celebrity at Comic Con is really a rare exception. Farr has seen how living the Golden Rule in business has paid huge dividends. He has earned the respect and trust of the entertainment world. More importantly, Dan Farr treats everyone like a VIP, whether it is the security guard, the friendly volunteer, or Kate Beckinsale. His greatest desire is to make sure everyone feels at home and welcome. Every single person who walks through the doors is a VIP in his mind and he treats them that way. He knows how to work a room and even the most charismatic politician could take a few tips from him. He looks you in the eye, asks your name and welcomes you in with open arms.

4

5

3. Farr hopes that SL Comic Con will stand out as one of the biggest conventions. “We will keep pushing and making it unique. And as the demand grows, we want to interconnect things and make it central to the entire city. We are on a great trajectory." 4. It is a fun event with lots of energy and great people. Farr loves to meet the fans most of all. 5. "He is amazing. Every year we see him, we spot him, we take pictures with him and we talk to him. He takes care of us. Dan is awesome." SMILES BEYOND THE REST COOK ORTHODONTICS PROVIDES ONE-OF-A-KIND PERSONALIZED CARE ARTICLE ASHLEY DICKSON PHOTOGRAPHY MARK THACKERAY

W

hen Dr. Michael Cook was in dental school, he purchased a very important website domain name: OrthoFamily.com. He’d observed many orthodontic practices turning into investor-owned corporate offices, losing their ability to extend a personal touch. Although Dr. Cook was only partway through his advanced education, he dreamed of someday providing ultra-personalized orthodontic care—he’d treat his patients like family. Today, his two thriving Utah offices do just that. “My patients become like family,” Dr. Cook says. “The question that goes through my mind is, ‘If this were a family member, what would I 16

Draper Lifestyle | June 2016

do for them?’ Once you have that mindset, all your decisions are based on what would be best for the patient. We’re patient-centered. We’re not the biggest outfit in town, but our services are customized and unique. We’re about getting quality smiles for individuals.” For Dr. Cook, creating an orthodontic practice that stands above the rest has been no small feat. After earning his bachelor’s degree in medical biology at the University of Utah, he spent four years in dental school, then two years in a prestigious orthodontic and oral biology program. And he didn’t stop there. Next, he earned his certification through the American Board of Orthodontics—a claim only a quarter of orthodontists can make.

And today, he continues to set himself apart. Dr. Cook dedicates two days a week as a clinical research consultant, where he delves into the latest innovations in orthodontics. This means his patients benefit from the cutting-edge technology that has been proven to be successful. “For about seven years I’ve been associated with an orthodontic manufacturing company called Ultradent,” Dr. Cook says. “They manufacture products for the orthodontic and dental industry. They create products that are manufactured and used in clinics throughout the country and world. In our clinic we test those products. We find out what works, what doesn’t, and how to make those products better. My clinical experience at Ultradent has allowed me to gain a vast amount of experience with treating difficult cases as well as adult patients, which some orthodontists shy away from.” Also, Dr. Cook travels the country—and in some cases, the world—both lecturing other orthodontists on specialized topics and benefiting from continuing education courses. “I want to be as educated and qualified as possible,” Dr. Cook says. “It’s worth it for me to spend the extra time and extra money to improve the care I provide—doing research, getting the American Board certification. This translates to satisfied patients. I feel the most fulfilled when a new patient experiences the immense difference in the care they receive at our office and they can’t wait to tell a friend about us.” Also, Dr. Cook has found that by continuing to research and educate himself, his patients benefit directly. “When you have newer, better technology, it makes the patients’ treatments easier,” Dr. Cook says. “When you’re using lasers instead of cutting into gums, for example, it’s painless for the patient.” And unlike many other orthodontists, Dr. Cook takes the conservative route when determining a treatment plan for his patients. “It’s nice for patients to know they can trust us," Dr. Cook says. "Because I plan well and use the science end of things, we’re going from point A to point B efficiently. Every patient is not going to need braces. We try to do things as efficiently as possible, and if we can cut down the number of visits and the cost for you, we will. It's different here."

Cook Orthodontics is conveniently located at 1025 E. 11400 South, Suite 103. To read more about Dr. Cook and get started on the road to your own beautiful smile, head to OrthoFamily.com or call 801-871-8397.

1956 FORD THUNDERBIRD A TRIO OF

Barry Skinner, a Draper resident since 1965, likes collecting vintage things. He collects old oilcans, wooden crates, antique tractors and most notably, three classic cars. “They’re a good investment,” he says. “Better than the stock market.” Sitting pretty in his garage is his 1956 Ford Thunderbird, painted a light avocado color, a shade that didn’t win over buyers in the 1950s. “Guys didn’t like the color, but women did,” he adds. The beauty has a porthole window on its white removable hardtop as well as whitewall tires and spoke rims, which Skinner says are the hardest parts to clean.

trailer and original Army color and emblems. A standard-issue axe and shovel remain attached to the side of the vehicle. Driving it around town isn’t easy. “The ride is choppy, and downhill with a tailwind you might get 50 miles per hour out of it,” Skinner says, noting he never takes it on a freeway. Skinner estimates that he’s owned and loved some 100-plus cars in his life. He shows them off in his photo album: a 1973 Mach 1, a 1972 Mustang Convertible, a 1976 Lincoln Continental, a red 1955 Thunderbird and a 1969 Mach 1—his wife, Caralee’s favorite. But Skinner does more than show off his cars in albums or at local parades and car shows. His cars have jobs. All three made appearances in BYUtv’s production, “Granite Flats,” a Cold War drama set in the 1960s. A U.S. Army veteran who was stationed in Germany from 1959-62, Skinner displays his Jeep and military memorabilia at Veteran’s Day celebrations and in local classrooms. For the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he took a Draper boy and his mom—decked out in Army helmets— on a Jeep ride in the foothills. Whether vintage or new, Skinner’s life has always appeared to pivot around automobiles in significant ways. After high school and his tour of duty in Germany, Skinner returned home and he and Caralee discussed marriage. The two obstacles, he told her, were a good car and a good job. The bride-to-be, anxious to move things along, loaned her fiancé the money to get a car, a 1964 Ford. A job at Kennecott—where he worked for 35 years—quickly followed, as did their marriage. “My wife tells everybody the only reason I married her was to get the car.”

Driver’s Notebook

The 2017 Porsche 718 boxster IS THE THING OF DREAMS

F

rom our earliest days of riding third row in a secondhand minivan, we’ve been addicted. Addicted to that otherworldly roar that heralds its presence. Addicted to pressing our faces against the window for a better look. And addicted to how that same window is left shaking in its wake. You see, for us, a Porsche isn’t just a car—it’s an unstoppable force that has fueled a lifelong obsession. Buying one isn’t the sign of a life in turmoil, but of one that’s finally arrived. So, the quick answer is yes. And the question doesn’t even need to be asked. The brand-new 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster is more than worthy of your asphalt aspirations. And with various parts sourced and carried over from the 911 Turbo, 911 Carrera and the previous Boxster S, it’s literally everything you’ve ever wanted in a Porsche. We got our first look at this beautiful, mythical creature mashup at Ken Garff Porsche in Lehi—a facility that looks like it was designed by Porsche itself for itself. The staff there shares the same lifelong passion we do, and many of them drive the same cars they sell every day. Needless to say, it felt less like a dealership and more like a club, and we all got quickly carried away discussing the finer points of the new 718—like its magnetorheological transmission mounts (a word spellcheck won’t even recognize). But none of that really matters. Because all you need to know is that the new 718 Boxster is quicker, faster and more powerful

28

Draper Lifestyle | June 2016

than its 2016 predecessor. Even significantly so. Porsche recently timed the new 718 Boxster S around the famed Nürburgring circuit at 7 minutes, 42 seconds—16 seconds quicker than a comparably equipped, track-optimized Boxster S. In fact, it’s no exaggeration to say that practically every aspect of the 2017 seems to be a marked improvement over previous iterations. Even the base model raises the bar for future endeavors. One turn behind the wheel is all it takes to shatter any doubt that Porsche may have compromised this iconic convertible in any way. But then again, was there any doubt to begin with? This is, after all, a Porsche—even its lug nuts are hand-stitched to perform. It’s a terrible thing to waste a lifelong dream. Lucky for all of us, Porsche makes it worth the wait.

PAGE-TURNING FICTION FOR KIDS EIGHT AND UP WORDS HOLLY NEWTON

H Just My Luck

ere are some of the best new fantasy, realistic fiction and mystery fiction books for kids eight and older. These are books your child will become excited to read!

Just My Luck, by Cammie McGovern, is a touching story about fourth grader Benny and how he deals with his life. He believes he has no talent. He can't even ride a bike successfully while his autistic brother rides circles around him. When his dad has a serious accident, Benny blames himself. But there are two people, his mom and his teacher, who support and enlighten him to his strengths–which are empathy and compassion. This book will motivate all who read it to desire to become a better person. Bounders, by Monica Tesler, begins like this: "I know it's rude to stare. How many times has Mom told me that? A million! But I've never seen an alien before." Twelve-year-old Jasper has just been chosen to be one of the space travelers called Bounders and become an exclusive cadet astronaut. This space adventure will enthrall you from cover to cover because the action is thrilling and with humor found throughout. To Catch a Cheat, by Varian Johnson, is a terrific mystery which involves Jackson Greene and his friends as they attempt to solve a very difficult dilemma. This is actually a sequel to The Great Greene Heist but reading the first one isn't necessary to enjoy and get caught up in this page-turner. However, after reading this book, you'll likely want to check out Johnson's first book. Beware of the surprise ending! Story Thieves and Story Thieves: The Stolen Chapters, by James Riley, is a two book series with the first book grabbing you and not letting you go until the last page. Book two is just as good. Owen's life is about to change. When he sees a girl climb out of a book, he discovers that she is both fictional and human and that she is searching for her missing father. This amazing discovery sets in motion a turn of events that creates adventures beyond Owen's imagination. "The Stolen Chapters" begins with richly imagined chapters. The first nine chapters have been stolen and Owen soon discovers that his memory has been erased! He will have to demonstrate courage in order to save his friends. Both books are perfect for even the most reluctant reader!

the adventures of lettie peppercorn

The Adventures of Lettie Peppercorn, by Sam Gayton, and sprinkled with imaginative drawings by Poly Bernatene, has all the elements of magic, adventure and mystery. Little Lettie has to be in charge of her father's inn since her mother has disappeared. One stormy night, a very unusual guest enters the inn and magical vestiges begin to occur. The descriptive language creates visual displays of creativity and ingenuity. This is a wondrous story! Henry Cicada's Extraordinary Elktonium Escapade, by David Teague, has young Henry desiring to be just a normal ordinary kid. Even though his parents are inventors, he just wants an ordinary life. But after his mom invents Elktonium and his dog's doghouse begins glowing with the stuff, he finds himself transported into the imagination of a girl, Lulu. He soon discovers that Lulu has a huge problem. Now he just might have to become something more than ordinary. The story is written with much humor making it a perfect read-out-loud. Into the Killing Seas, by Michael P. Spradlin, is a historical fiction that is loosely woven around the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis during World War II. But the two main protagonists are the fictional part of this exciting story. Two young brothers hideaway on board the ship so they can head back to the Philippines to be with their parents. But when the Indianapolis is suddenly torpedoed, the boys survive the attack but now they have to try and survive without water and food–and with sharks. Hunters of Chaos and Hunters of Chaos: The Circle of Lies, by Chrystal Velasquez, is a mythology story that rings similar to the Rick Riordan series, only this series centers around girls. When Ana is sent to a school in New Mexico, she soon discovers three other girls who have a similar background to her. All four find something very strange: they find they all have magical powers. This leads to some odd experiences at the school. The second book continues with their exhilarating adventures.
