The Art of Staying Close to Home I
JULY 2016 publisher
am constantly beguiled by Trip Advisor. Hipmunk tempts too, and alerts set to destinations all over the world fill my inbox on a weekly basis and get me sidetracked and dreamy about vacations— dreamy about a simple “somewhere else.” Because… well, because I love leaving. I love packing up and saying sayonara to the house (thelaundrythedishesthetodolist) and finding myself—that lovely, relaxed, unfettered self—somewhere along the way.
Except not as much in the summer. Summer seems to me the only time I’m not scheming to escape. I mean, I’m still scheming, but the plans are less desperate and more utilitarian: See as many cousins as possible! See as many siblings as possible! Make this beautiful, unscheduled day count! It’s like the hot, sun-soaked month has seeped lazy into my bones. And I can’t do much and I can’t go too far, even as I feel compelled to eke out the most of this fleeting season. And, I kinda, sorta, really love Draper in July. The long magic evenings, the endless fireworks, lemonade stands on every corner. Literally. You should see my neighborhood.

After the battles, “wounded” troops were carried to the Triage tent where students there explained the gruesome process of performing amputations without any pain medication, let alone gloves for sanitation. Several other tents and stations were set up on the campus as well, depicting scenes of how soldiers might have spent their down-time doing activities such as a simple form of baseball and other games or crafts. Even Abraham Lincoln was seen walking the grounds and speaking to those gathered. In preparation for the event, all eighth grade students study Civil War history. EQUINE ATHLETES MOVE TONS AT DRAPER DAYS HORSE PULL ARTICLE LINNEA LUNDGREN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
There’s power and then there’s horsepower.
Horsepower is Dean and Red, two magnificent Belgian draft horses, hooked to a sled loaded down with over seven tons—and pulling that load nine and a half feet. “I don’t think anyone can imagine the strength these athletes have until they actually come and see them at a pull,” says Joe McKee, the Belgians’ owner. McKee and his two horse teams—middleweights Dean and Red and heavyweights Jess and Billy—will show their power and prowess at the free Draper Days Horse Pull on Saturday, July 16 at 7 p.m. at the Andy Ballard Equestrian Center. Horse pulling has been Horse Power Credit: Justin Palmer in McKee’s family since his grandfather’s day. He started working horses at 10 and has participated in the Draper horse pull for decades. “When I was a kid we used to farm with these horses,” he says. “But we don’t do that much anymore.” Today his draft horses are athletes, training six days a week. McKee brings his teams to 20 horse pulls a year, May through October. And they love to pull. “That’s what they are made to do,” he says. Helping train the horses is 25-year-old Justin Palmer. His father, Darin Palmer, partners with Horse power Credit: Joe McKee McKee at many pulls. The younger Palmer knows he is “pretty spoiled” working outside with beautiful animals and particularly enjoys seeing the winning results of their training. But, he says, it’s a full-time and physically demanding job preparing for competition. What makes a winning team, he and McKee agree, is a well-planned training and feed program. Down in Palmer’s South Jordan pasture, Palmer works several hours daily with each team, favoring cross training methods. He’ll jog the horses to build endurance and lung capacity, then, every other day, practice pulling several thousand pounds to build muscle.

“I don’t think anyone can imagine the strength these athletes have until they actually come and see them at a pull,” says Joe McKee, the Belgians’ owner. During training, it’s an all-you-can-eat hay buffet. Heavyweights consume a bale of hay a day, plus seven gallons of grain, which provides protein and vitamins. On their time off, the horses relax, acting much like oversized pets who just want to “hang out with ya,” says Palmer. That’s a sharp contrast to competition day, when the crowd quiets and the McKee/Palmer team attempts to fasten the two-ton horse team— adrenaline flowing, heads bowed, nostrils flared—to the sled. If it weren’t for horse pulls, McKee believes these draft animals would fade away, since most farmers, except the Amish, use tractors. Thankfully, the horse pull at Draper Days is going strong and gives modern-day folk a chance to witness the power of the animals, who a century ago, cleared, plowed, and built this country. As McKee says, “We’re keeping a heritage going.”

PACKING PICKS SEVEN PIECES FOR SEVEN DAYS— THE METHOD

ho wants to lug around a heavy bag while on vacation? Packing efficiently is all about great planning. The set below includes enough pieces for dressy or casual occasions, warm days, cool nights and 12-15 different outfit options. You may even be able to take that small bag--you know, the one that fits in the overhead. Which means you won’t have to wait and wait for your bag after you get to your destination. Which means you can start sipping piña coladas that much sooner! SEVEN PIECES FOR SEVEN DAYS--THE METHOD
1. Find a source of inspiration–a pattern of colors in a print, stripe or plaid–to inspire the color scheme of your cluster. We used Luxe Couture Fashion Boutique’s red and white striped tee to inspire our patriotic holiday vacation. LuxeCoutureFashion.com 2. Plan for five to eight easy pieces of clothing, at least three top and two bottom pieces. This
set includes a jacket, dress, two more tops and two bottoms from H&M. HM.com 3. Select pieces that are basic–simple in style lines and shape. 4. Select pieces that go together–will work with at least three, four or more other pieces. Every piece in this group can be worn together. 5. Select pieces that are distinctly different from one another (no two pieces alike) for maximum versatility. For example, you can wear the shirt unbuttoned over the dress and knotted at the waist or buttoned and layered over the tank with shorts. 6. Select accessories to go with the clothes, beginning with essential basic accessories first. Comfortable shoes are a must on vacation. Red sneakers are from Luxe Boutique, sandals from FitFlop. FitFlop.com 7. Finally, throw in a swimsuit (this one is from RoseWe.com), pjs, underwear, essential grooming items, a couple of books, sunscreen and you’re ready for piña coladas!

DRAPER PARKS & REC IT TAKES A WHOLE TEAM, AT THE HELM IS DIRECTOR RHETT OGDEN
ARTICLE ALISA FROST | PHOTOGRAPHY BROOKE BENTON
I Rhett Ogden, Draper Parks and Recreation director
24
Draper Lifestyle | July 2016
t's safe to say if you live in Draper that you have visited one of our city's many parks. With 39 parks in Draper and countless trails, it's almost impossible not to take advantage of these numerous open spaces. There is a lot of work that goes into these parks and trails including the maintenance of the baseball diamonds at Draper Park and the soccer fields at Galena Hills Park. One undertaking that may be a surprise to some is the grooming of snow on several trails for fat-tire bikes last winter. The Christmas lights display at Draper Park has become newsworthy with the "Tree of Life" and draws visitors to our city from near and far. Behind all of the Draper parks and trails, as well as the Draper Amphitheater, is The Draper Parks and Recreation Department which consists of 21 full time employees, 20 seasonal employees and around 30 year-round part-time employees. At its head is the director, Rhett Ogden, who has a 16 year career in parks and recreation and became the director of Draper Parks and Recreation seven and a half years ago. When he took the job there
was not even a Draper Parks and Recreation Department. Ogden has literally built this department from the ground up. With the Draper Parks and Recreation Department's development of the Corner Canyon mountain biking trails and the consequential formation of both the Corner Canyon High School and Draper Park Middle School's Mountain Biking teams, Draper is on the map as a mountain biking destination. It has also received the desig-
these programs. One issue they ran into this past season was scheduling court time for one of the biggest Junior Jazz basketball programs in it's class with 1,500 kids playing right here in Draper. They have had to scramble to rent court time from local schools. One thing Ogden wants to point out is that "It's not just about ball games and sports." They've got ACT Test Prep classes, science based summer and arts camps and, in addition to youth sports, they have adult
The next big project for the Rec Department will be a new indoor aquatic center. They have applied for ZAP funds and it looks like Draper may be on the short list to get funding approved for this indoor aquatic center that would be built on the county owned land next to the existing Draper outdoor pool, which will remain as it is. Exciting things are on the horizon for Draper! Many thanks to Ogden and his team that help keep
“It’s not just about ball games and sports.” They’ve got ACT Test Prep classes, science based summer and arts camps and, in addition to youth sports, they have adult recreation groups. “Draper has about the biggest adult kickball league in the state,” says Ogden. There’s something for everyone. nation of the largest high school mountain biking team in the country. This was only able to happen after a well planned out expansion of trails many of which have literally been cut into the mountain side. With safety of all trail users in mind, much thought has been put into the downhill bike-only trails as well as a hoof and foot trail for horses and hikers only. Behind all of the planning, construction, maintenance and continual safety awareness are Ogden and his team. One of the biggest events that Draper Parks and Rec has a hand in is a huge event in July, Draper Days. The estimate is that 25,000 people attend Draper Days each night on Friday and Saturday nights. This event is so large that it requires it's own Draper Days Committee that is the main organizer of the event, but Draper Parks and Rec runs several events including the Children's Parade, movie at the amphitheater, three on three basketball and pickle ball tournaments and new this year is a Stryder bike race for kids. The biggest challenge is the park maintenance during this event. "Not only getting the park looking good to invite the whole state to come, but the trash management during this event keeps employees there sometimes until one or two a.m. and then back early the next day," says Ogden. Another huge task of Draper Parks and Rec is running the youth sports programs. Staffing referees is always a challenge for
recreation groups. "Draper has about the biggest adult kickball league in the state," says Ogden. There's something for everyone.

DRAPER DAYS parade
A CELEBRATION OF OUR CITY ARTICLE KELLY ERICKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY KRISTIN MOLEN
T
he annual Draper Days Parade attracts thousand of spectators as it winds its way along historic Fort Street in the center of the city. There are marching bands, floats, antique cars, dancers, singers and much more; a copious menagerie of quirkiness and hometown flair that celebrates Draper and the people that make this community a fantastic place to live. The parade is a decades old tradition, but in the past five years it has experienced incredible growth, due in large part

to parade director Debbie Ballard. She starts working on it in January as a labor of love, culling down entrants to include a wide variety of interests and textures. The parade has almost doubled in size since she took the helm. Last year, there were 60 entries that didn’t even get in. “The citizens of Draper love the charming Draper Days parade. I have enjoyed every minute of it and getting to know people and the community partners. It has been all worth it, even though it is lots of work and time,” says Ballard. There is a small budget for the parade, with most of the money used to pay for the marching bands that participate. Corner Canyon High School is a huge supporter of the parade and has always entered many different organizations. Ballard hopes to get Alta High School back to the parade as well and has made a concerted effort to reach out to them. The Draper Police Department is an integral part of the days festivities and its enormous success. They always lead the procession on motorbikes, swerving up and down the streets in their sharp, crisp uniforms, carrying the American flag. Every year, Officer Chad Carpenter helps Ballard on Friday night mark the street and get the staging area ready for a morning of fun and pageantry and Ballard always enlists the help of family to get things running smoothly on parade day. The parade loves volunteers. If you would like to help stage the parade, or be a parade announcer, please contact Debbie Ballard at 801-856-7374.

Parting Thoughts Crystal Hot Springs
A Quick
Staycation Up North HOW COME WHAT MAY EXPERIENCES LEAD TO THE BEST MEMORIES WORDS TAMARA UZELAC HALL
T
wo summers ago we found ourselves in need of a quick, last minute get away. Summer was at full tilt and, with two teenagers and two under the age of seven, mom needed a break! After haphazardly putting together a plan and with almost no expectations, we decided to head north to Honeyville, Utah. We packed up in one day and hit the road. Our first stop was a no-brainer: Maddox Ranch House. If you haven't been it's an absolute must. I recommend a reservation and the filet mignon. We were too stuffed for dessert and politely declined until my husband saw a beautiful strawberry shortcake pass by and said to the waitress, "I hate to do this to you but can we get two of those to go?" With our fit-to-bust-bellies and shortcakes in hand, we made our way to the motel unaware to the foibles of a "last minute" reservation. The original plan was to camp at our destination, but my husband made an executive decision right before leaving and made reservations at a "motel-that-must-not-be-named." Why? Because I don't have the word count to tell of the atrocious and unnerving conditions where "CAUTION" tape was rife and the smell of cat urine robust. Suffice it to say, camping would have been the Four Seasons had we gone with our original plan. Our bad--a last minute reservation can be risky, but it is one of our favorite memories from the trip. It's all about the experience, right?! The motel offered a complimentary continental breakfast, but at 7:30 the next morning I was awakened by the sound of my seven year old daughter whispering into my phone, "Siri, where is the closest breakfast place?" After our sordid stay at the motel, we opted out of the free breakfast and headed to McDonald's--where we dined 34

to our satisfaction on hot cakes and Egg McMuffins, while a lovely elderly woman walked around wishing everyone "a blessed day." After breakfast we headed north to Honeyville and the drive alone was enough to make my staycation complete. It was gorgeous! I recommend you take the time to drive slow, stop at the sights and see it all. It's a scenic drive of days bygone: acres of green pastures, treasures at every turn, old homes, farm equipment, historical markers, an LDS Tabernacle with a breathtaking organ that if you ask they will let you play, Golden Spike National Historic Site and a roadside stand selling jars of the most delicious Honeyville raw honey, complete with a money box and a faith in humanity. Fourteen miles later, we arrived at Crystal Hot Springs anxious and uncertain. To our utter delight, we submerged ourselves in mineral water while our little ones curiously tried out what they called the "Old Fashioned Waterslide/Hydro Tube." However, our teenage daughters were more interested and elated at the sighting of, and picture with, David Archuleta. Once our day of soaking and swimming had come to an end, we dined on a pre-purchased good old fashioned Dutch oven dinner right there in the parking lot. We figured it was something our kids had never tried before, and given their refined palates of chicken nuggets and french fried cuisine, probably won't try again, but hey--experience! After dinner we loaded up the car and headed home. Short but sweet, our quick staycation up north was not a bad way to spend a couple of days as a family, and a last minute staycation it is still something we continue to enjoy... come what may.
