AUGUST 2015
M
y son picks lots of flowers for me. Roses with the stems so short I can barely balance them in narrow-mouthed vases, bunches of yarrow with the roots still attached, handfuls of snowballs that drape lazily over the sides of cups, and the single peony if I’m lucky. (She’s so gorgeous, and such a show-off.) I’m most impressed at his harvest of thistles while they’re still soft and purple, and the way he can even make the flowering groundcover look like a bouquet in his dirty little fist. But his favorites to gift remain the yellow heads of dandelions, and there's almost always a collection of those fuzzy things, floating in a shallow bowl of water in our kitchen. He’s always proud of having something to give, and I’m grateful for the idea of abundance surrounding us. There’s a lovely self-sufficiency in this “grow then give” mentality, and that, I think, is the true essence of “Home Grown.” It’s in this spirit that I plant, every spring, with the hope of concocting full salads from a simple patch of dirt in my backyard, and canning enough jam to hand-deliver to my neighbors at Christmas. But it never quite works out that way. We are your garden variety (pun intended!) type who excel at tomatoes and gigantic zucchini and ungroomed and feisty raspberry bushes that send runners all over the yard. Meaning, we seem to be good at things we can ignore for a week then rediscover, heading out to harvest only what we want to eat from the vine, that very minute, or what we want to roast, that very night. And, to be certain there's a very real simple beauty in that. But it has nothing on the green thumbs we feature in this issue. And I am inspired by their process, their results. The idea of coaxing and nurturing something into existence that wasn’t there before, then sharing it, and then maybe learning something in the process, is immensely fulfilling to the soul in this day and age of fast food and easy access. And I think we all want in on that goodness. So whether your own “Home Grown” comes from a family farm or a tried and true recipe, a long-cultivated friendship or a choice to “bloom where you’re planted,” to grow and share seems to be one of the most beautiful aspects of living. More beautiful that even the showiest of peony.

BELL ORGANIC GARDENS AIMS TO ENRICH LIVES THROUGH CROPS
H
eirloom tomatoes, particularly the “pineapple” variety, inspire poetic praise from Draper farmer David Bell. “When you slice the tomato in half it looks like you are holding the sunrise in one hand and the sunset in the other,” he says of the large, red and yellow-streaked favorite. And the taste, well, is as sweet as summer. Such joy, love and appreciation of vegetables are what Bell, owner of Bell Organic Gardens, wants to bring to locals through his farm and community supported agriculture. “A lot of us want to eat locally and eat what’s in season, but it is a hard thing to do on our own,” he says. People get stuck in a rut and buy the
ARTICLE LINNEA LUNDGREN PHOTOGRAPHY THRIVEPHOTOGRAPHYSLC.COM
same produce at the grocery store week after week. Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, is a way to break out of that cycle. Bell explains that CSA is like buying a “subscription” to Bell Organic Gardens for a season or more. In just the way you don’t know what you are going to get in a magazine subscription, the same applies to the CSA share. “It is a wonderful opportunity for people to pay in advance...and then I know who I am planting for, I know how much to grow, and then (when brought home) it becomes a food adventure to have with your family,” he explains. In-season vegetable baskets are delivered weekly or available for pick up at his farm. Bonnie Williamson, a Draper resident, always looks forward to her weekly delivery. “It is just like Christmas when you open up your cooler,” says the yoga teacher. She wants to buy local, fresh food and Bell’s CSA is the best way to do so. “I love all the vegetables,” she adds, “but the greens are the best.” She only visits the grocery store every so often to buy protein. Bell and his wife Jill started farming commercially in 1998 after questioning why they couldn’t find good food grown closer to home. The couple threw caution to the wind, found a parcel of fertile land in Draper, bought a vintage orange tractor, and started tilling and planting. Soon other land opportunities became available, most recently a lease of 10 acres in Draper’s new Wheadon Farm Park at 138th South and Bangerter Parkway. “All of this was farmland,” he says of Salt Lake Valley, “and now it is all gone. So, having crops at Wheadon Farm Park is the biggest thing going on the east side. It is special. We are going to have the opportunity to grow for years to come and hopefully create experiences for people who live in Draper and want to spend some time here—perhaps play in the park and then come over and buy a watermelon for their picnic.” Bell Organic Gardens grows everything from arugula to zucchini, about 40 different types of vegetable crops and some melons. There are no berries or orchard crops at the moment. Within the crops are seven varieties of eggplants and more than 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, including “big whoppers” that hit the scale at 2.75 lbs. “They are practically watermelons,” Bell jokes. With such choices, vegetable conversions happen often, especially, he says, to beet haters. Beets are storage crops and lose flavor over time. But when they are freshly pulled from the ground, the rich flavor changes people’s mind. Plus, variety helps. Orange beets have a different flavor profile than red, and striped beets have less of that earthy flavor people find unappetizing. “Those are the kind of things people get excited about,” he says. Williamson says she became a collard greens lover thanks to Bell’s recipe that accompanied the cruciferous vegetable. “I keep telling them they should write a cookbook,” she adds. After 16 years of farming, the father of four hopes to bring more vegetable opportunities to Draper, perhaps opening a Saturday morning farm stand or possibly an educational U-pick experience. In the meantime, CSA shares are available weekly. “We want to be a bright spot in people’s week,” Bell says. For information on CSA, visit BellOrganic.com.

“You are out of your mind!" or "This is really cool!" are the two expressions I usually get from people who come to see our garden and orchard located just south of Pioneer Road and 1700 East. My wife, Sommer, loves gardening. A number of years ago for Christmas I gave her gardening classes at Thanksgiving Point from Larry Sagers. Those led to more classes and then wanting more space to create and try to grow different plants, trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. My wife loves Larry Sagers more than me. Four years ago the Kay Smith family sold to us their land near our house along with their 60-year-old home. We have come to find out there is so much of Draper history associated with this property. It used to be a huge chicken farm and many in Draper had a first job working in some part of the Smith's poultry business. The modest home was the place where several children were raised despite the fact that the basement was never finished until we finished it after we bought it. When we first purchased the property we developed a plan for how it would look over time. It now has elevated metal and stone garden boxes along with an orchard of 48 fruit trees. We have several varieties of apple, peach, pear, plum, nectarine and one apricot. We planted most of them as tiny sticks and this will be the first year we will see some significant fruit. We also CONTINUED >

have raspberry and strawberry boxes and a chicken coop. The center of the garden is unfinished but for the time being we feel like we have plenty to keep us busy. That will be an addition sometime in the future. We also have plans to add a greenhouse but for now we use a temporary tent type greenhouse for starting tomatoes and such. If you are wondering if this project makes financial sense the answer is a resounding no! It is a fun way to raise kids, though. There is endless weeding. We plant and re-plant some vegetables every year. We have been very good at corn, tomatoes, potatoes and pumpkins. We have failed miserably at watermelon and asparagus. In all we do at the garden there are great life lessons. Gardening is the opposite of instant gratification. We have dealt with animals eating our crops and tiny fruit trees. We have learned not to name our chickens so that when they die there is less trauma. One zucchini plant is enough for an entire neighborhood. Raspberries are worth their weight in gold. Cabbage looks really good in a garden but still tastes like cabbage, even when its fresh. Kale from your own garden in smoothies still tastes bad. Nothing is better than corn on the cob. Most days our kids enjoy working as a family--but sometimes we get protests. Some people have family fun on boats, at vacation homes or in recreational vehicles. We garden. Â

Even Stevens Sandwiches Remembers the Widowmaker ARTICLE JAMIE COATES | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
f you were riding motorcycles in the 1970s, odds were you were one of millions swept up in the cinematic wave of Bruce Brown’s film, On Any Sunday. The instant cult classic hurtled into theatres the restless summer of 1971. It was a real motorcycle film, unlike any seen before. And in it’s 40-year history, it has both inspired new riders and reiterated a timeless resolve: motorcycles are cool. The reason we start an article about a new sandwich shop with an ode to motorcycle culture is less about sex appeal and more about why Even Stevens Sandwiches loves Draper, Utah. A place often reminisced about in the language of farms, tractors, chickens ‘n eggs. All that stuff is fine and dandy, but we wanted the unsung story. The hidden, dusty low-down. It’s all part of the place-making process that makes every Even Stevens Sandwiches unique. Getting up close and personal with the community’s character, and refusing to settle for a cookie-cutter guest experience. Rebels ourselves in the industry, we found a kindred spirit to resonate with in this southern-most Salt Lake valley city. Who knew we’d dust off a history that some locals themselves never knew existed? What you probably didn’t know is that On Any Sunday brought a Draper landmark to the Hollywood screen. In one of the film’s

most memorable scenes, star Malcolm Smith takes on The Widowmaker. Yes, that austere point of the mountain dotted with paragliders in the summer months. West of the big South Mountain homes and visible from I-15. Once the meanest hill in the sport of hill climbing; a hot-bed (literally) of motorcycle culture. Thousands were drawn to the annual Widowmaker Hillclimb event in the early summers of 1968-1988. Some of the most well-respected riders in the nation burned and bruised their egos there. Families, trailers, Coleman coolers, hippies and wanna-be riders all gathered to watch competitors attempt the 45° climb (some were even smacked by falling bikes). The goal? Top the hill or fall trying. Closest fall to the top wins. Only a handful of riders ever conquered the hill in its running history. On Any Sunday’s Mike Gibbons included. And that brings us back to the idea of place. While Even Stevens embarks on a Draper legacy of our own, we’re embracing the community’s character: true grit, enthusiasm, and the support of friends and family. Vintage cycles hang from our ceiling. A 30foot mural by Salt Lake aerosol artist Sril brings the hill climb to life on our kitchen wall, and our crew dons uniforms reminiscent

of 1970s racing culture. Not only is this a place to eat, it is a place to remember: Draper has always been a cool place to be. Now about those sandwiches. Ah, and delicious salads, bites under $5, breakfast, craft beer, and pink-frosted sugar cookies. Inspired by nostalgic recipes, Even Stevens’ kitchen celebrates the classics with a creative lean. A Sloppy Joe with coleslaw and pickled onions, a mouth-watering jalapeno popper grilled cheese, and even a Vegan “Sloppy Tina,” to name a few. Guests can count on us for breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch ‘on any Sunday.’ Live music graces our shop weekly and for those who prefer the open-air, we have a patio seating, too. At first glance, Even Stevens is an exciting new eatery with an all-inclusive approach to food, service and ambiance. Rebels as we are, however, Even Stevens is much more than just a place to eat. We’re a sandwich shop with a cause. The brainchild of Draper-native Steve Down, Even Stevens Sandwiches is a for-profit venture committed to ending hunger as a social problem. For every sandwich sold, we donate a nutritious sandwich to a local non-profit. Every sandwich, every day. Creating sustainable social change by feeding the clients of non-profits, and allowing their organizations to direct mon-
ey towards their other programs. The ones that clothe people, house people and teach people. The ambition is real. Since opening our first shop in Downtown SLC on June 24th of 2015, Even Stevens has donated more than 120,000 sandwiches to Salt Lake City non-profits. And with Draper’s opening, we expect to add over 50,000 sandwiches a year to that number. Even Stevens Draper will directly support a handful of unique non-profits: Andrew’s Food Pantry, Salt Lake City Mission, First Step House and Crossroad’s Urban Center. In the way of the Widowmaker riders, we’re committed. Committed to our food, cause and the places we set up shop. Where better to plant our rebel foot down than a city with a wild past? Draper city, we’re here to stay. While serving your city and supporting your non-profits, we celebrate your history. Your hills are our hills. Whether topping an impossible climb or taking the food service industry by altruistic storm - we relate. Here’s to the restless and wild. For more information on how we do what we do, check out EvenStevens.com. Or better yet, come on in and ask our Experience Creators. August 2015 | Draper Lifestyle

(Serves 6 as an appetizer) INGREDIENTS: 5-6 heirloom tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 loaf artisan bread, sliced in thirds and grilled 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 2-3 cups baby kale pieces Kosher salt Freshly cracked pepper Olive oil Fig balsamic reduction, for drizzling PREPARATION:
Preheat grill to high heat. Slice artisan bread in thirds horizontally. Spread olive oil over the tops of two of the flatter slices of the artisan loaf. Sprinkle with freshly cracked pepper and kosher salt. Preheat oven to a low broil. Grill both sides of the two artisan bread slices. Remove from grill when it is golden brown. Sprinkle tops of grilled bread with Parmesan cheese. Line a baking sheet and place 2-3 cups baby kale pieces on the tray. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with freshly cracked pepper. Toss well to coat evenly. Place in oven on second to the top rack. Watch closely. Broil kale for 3-5 minutes, or until crispy but not browning much. Remove from oven and set aside. Slice heirloom tomatoes and arrange over Parmesan cheese in desired pattern. The tomato slices should overlap some. Top the tomato slices with crispy kale chips. Sprinkle a little more kosher salt and freshly cracked pepper over kale chips. Drizzle with fig balsamic reduction and a little olive oil. Serve warm, or at room temperature.

What’s Cooking?
(CONTINUED) PREPARATION:
½ cup Castelvetrano olives 1 packet Good Season’s Italian Dressing Mix (Prepared with red wine vinegar, olive oil and one teaspoon Truvia) Salt and pepper to taste PREPARATION:
Slice cucumbers and zucchini with spiral slicer into “zoodles” (a.k.a. veggie noodles). Dice red onion, slice cherry tomatoes, cube mozzarella, slice salami and chop fresh parsley. Add all these ingredients into a medium sized mixing bowl. Add olives. Mix dressing together and drizzle half of the dressing over the salad. Toss well. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and place in refrigerator to marinate for 30 minutes. Serve with additional dressing before serving.
Prepare and chop all veggies as directed above. In a large skillet melt 2 tablespoons butter over high heat. Add in shallots, garlic and corn kernels. Sauté for 2 minutes. Add in red pepper, zucchini, cilantro, chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, lime juice, sweet chili sauce, kosher salt and freshly cracked pepper. Sauté for 5 minutes or until corn and zucchini are tender. You can serve this hot or cold. It is great both ways! For more recipes and a glimpse into Muir's vibrant, fun life, visit FreshAndHappy.com.

Sun Safety for Summer—and Beyond SUMMER ISN’T THE ONLY SEASON FOR SUN DAMAGE-PROTECT YOURSELF NO MATTER THE TIME OF YEAR ARTICLE ASHLEY DICKSON
Y
ou’re soaking up the last drops of summer while writing your back-to-school shopping list. In a matter of weeks, you’ll store away the swimsuits and bring out the backpacks. But don’t put away your sunscreen just yet. “The sun is there 365 days a year—not just during the hot summer months,” says Kelly Lance, family nurse practitioner at La Belle Vie Medical Care and Aesthetics in Draper. “Most people don’t realize that UV rays are intense all year long. Wearing sunscreen throughout the year not only protects your skin from damaging skin cancers, it keeps you from aging prematurely.” Knowing the right sunscreen for your skin is also important. Current research shows both UVA and UVB rays to be responsible for all sorts of damage, like aging skin, burns, skin cancers and wrinkles, to name a few. So pick a sunscreen with “broad spectrum” protection— this ensures you’ll be guarded against UVA and UVB rays. Next, check your SPF, or sun protection factor. SPF indicates how long it will take for your skin to start reddening when using a sunscreen compared to how long it would take without the product. So if you’re using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15, it’ll take you 15 times longer to redden than if you went without sunscreen. An SPF 15 sunscreen will protect against 93 percent of the sun’s rays, SPF 30 blocks 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps you safe from 98 percent. 26
Draper Lifestyle | August 2015
“Always use SPF 50 on your face and neck,” Lance says. “A high quality sunscreen made by SkinCeuticals or Obagi is best. Your provider can help you select the best sunscreen for your skin type. A water resistant sunscreen for the rest of your body is good for activities where you’ll be swimming or seeing increased activity in the sun. Even on cloudy days, your skin is subject to the sun's rays.” Once you’ve found the right sunscreen for you, be liberal in your application of it. As you make the most of the outdoors during the warm weather, reapply your sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating. You can also protect yourself in other ways, like seeking the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., covering up with clothing (think broad-rimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses), and always avoiding tanning booths. And no matter what your sunscreen habits have been in the past, making a change now will bring benefits for your future. “If you have a history of skin cancer in your family, protecting your skin is of the utmost importance,” Lance says. “To prevent premature aging, sunscreen is of the utmost importance. No one wants wrinkles—we pay a lot of money to get rid of them! Maintaining your skin care routine and always using sunscreen will help keep your skin from getting that aged, saggy, leathery look.”

DESIGN, STYLE, EXCELLENCE
NEW KEN GARFF AUDI LOCATION CREATES A UNIQUE BRANDED EXPERIENCE ARTICLE SPENCER DICKSON
W
hen you think Audi, you think design. You think style. You think a pedigree of excellence. What you probably don’t think is outdated facilities. So when the time came for Ken Garff Audi to open up a new location on Digital Drive in Lehi (right by the Adobe building—you may have seen the ad headline, “Our new neighbors are nerds."), there were a lot of smiles at the dealership. “The time was right to make a move,” says Dave Turja, general manager. “Our customers are very well versed in the history and prestige of the Audi brand, so having a brand new state-ofthe-art facility made a lot of sense.” One step inside the brand new dealership bears out what Turja is saying. “If you could equate a building with an Audi, this would be that building,” he continues. It’s hard to argue. When you walk in the first thing you notice is how modern everything is. And spacious. Filled with brand new Audi models, the showroom positively glistens. “Yeah, when I come to work, I can’t help but use words like ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ and ‘design,’" Turja says. “We’ve taken the whole Audi commitment to German engineering and really done it justice in our dealership.” Customers will notice it right away. It seems that every detail was considered, down to the cool, moody lighting and the posh lobby area. “Everything was designed to create a feeling that really person28

ifies what owning and driving an Audi is all about,” Turja says. “We know Audi drivers are very particular—they’re detail-oriented people, interested not only in top-flight performance but gorgeous design.” And how about the location? It was important to Ken Garff Audi to set up their new location just south of the Point of the Mountain. “It’s kind of funny,” Turja says when asked about the location. “People around the valley hear ‘Point of the Mountain,’ and their first reaction is to think, ‘That’s a bit of a drive.’ But the thing is, when you’re looking for an Audi you want a bit of a drive. In all seriousness, though, we’re only about 20 minutes from most spots. And when you test-drive or buy your new Audi, it’s always nice to get it right out on the freeway and open it up a little bit. All you want to do is get behind the wheel and drive, you know?” Those in the market for a new car would do well to check out the new Ken Garff Audi location. “You’ve seen all the Ken Garff billboards along I-15,” Turja says. “It’s pretty hard to miss them. Well, we take the whole ‘We hear you’ promise very seriously around here. In the same way we want our new dealership to reflect Audi, we want our sales process and customer experience to reflect Ken Garff. And, of course, it’s pretty hard to beat the Audi driving experience. These are fine-tuned machines. You can’t help but fall in love when you drive one.”

The Draper Drips FIVE HAPPY "YOUNG" LADIES ARTICLE SHARI MOORE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
hat, you may ask, is a Draper Drip? Take five Draper girls who met in kindergarten (held for six weeks in the summer) in 1944, watch them join together to pick strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, have fun-filled slumber parties, host Halloween parties for dozens in the Hoffman’s red barn, and speed around town in Ray Hoffman’s old truck--which they had decorated with polka dots, stripes, checks, and flowers from unused house paint, and who they called Albert--and you will know you have seen a Draper Drip.
Back then, Jordan High had students from every community south of 7200 South and east/west of both mountain ranges. Every town had it’s own “groups." Each of these five Draper girls held class or student body offices and, not wanting to be arrogant, began calling themselves “The Draper Drips.” They loved their classmates, but always, always, held their precious bond of friendship as something to be treasured. After graduation, life took them all in different directions and they began to lose touch with each other. When they were 60 years old, Lynda Lee Sharp Paulk endured a life threatening illness. Living in Las Vegas, she resolved to reunite the Drips, inviting them all to Vegas for a lovely weekend. There they were transported back through those many years to the happy, carefree days of their youth, and have since dedicated one week every summer to enjoy, once again, being a Draper Drip. They call it "Draper Drip Week." One year, as they were “flying” up I-15 outside of Bakersfield, California, a young patrolman man stopped them for “excessive” speeding. He looked into the Lexus window where the front seat, back seat and every inch between was filled with five happy ladies, their knitting in their laps, Diet Coke cans in every holder. “What is this, girls night out?” he asked with a wry grin. When he learned they were the Draper Drips, friends for 70+ years, who had seen three Angels baseball games that week, he came back to them and said, “Slow down girls, we want to see you back here again next year." One has to believe he had quite a story to tell his buddies after work that day, such as “You won’t believe what I caught doing 90 on the freeway today!" So, if you happen to see five happy “young” ladies, each one talking a mile-a-minute, boarding a plane for Newport Beach, and it’s August, you might want to ask if you can join in, because being a Draper Drip is a wonderful thing. Parting Thoughts
Bloom Where You Are Planted
Dutton, with her family, at Arches.
WORDS MIMI DARLEY DUTTON
I
am an Oregon native and a transplant to Utah. My family and I moved here after nearly seven years in Boise, Idaho, and a humid summer spent living in Manassas, Virginia before officially arriving in Draper one hot August day nine years ago. I was “home grown” in a small town in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the land of strawberries, Marionberries, sweet corn, mint, green beans and grass seed. My town was largely a farming community where kids picked strawberries or cut broccoli for summer jobs, or as they got older, they’d drive combines on farms or work at the local cannery to save money for college. My grandfather had been a successful farmer there, starting with just three acres that he and my grandmother used a horse and tools to pull stumps from before planting their first crops early in their marriage. Their farm grew to 400 acres and 500 employees at its peak. Though he was retired when I knew him, my grandpa was never one to sit still. He’d

make daily trips to the farm and I would sometimes accompany him as he’d deliver fresh corn and beans that he’d hand-picked to friends and family in the area, simply for the sake of being kind and for the chance to connect with those he cared about. The recipients always greeted him with smiles, grateful for his kindness and excited about the fresh produce. Nearly two decades since my grandfather passed away, my husband still says his corn on the cob was like candy, the sweetest he’s ever tasted. Sadly, I didn’t inherit my grandpa’s green thumb. Beyond having some colorful flowers in pots to adorn our patio for spring and summer, I’m afraid I’m not a gardener of any kind. But I’ve realized I am my own kind of gardener in that I’ve learned the art of blooming where I’m planted. I’ve worked to put down roots and seek happiness as a transplant to the places I’ve lived since leaving Oregon. Ours is a different generation. Rather than staying close to home to take over the
family farm or business, many of us move to where job opportunities take us. While my parents have lived in the same house for over 40 years, I’m in my fourth home in 20 years of marriage. Given Utah’s strong job economy and Draper’s booming growth, many new people will be transplanting themselves here as well. Summer is prime time for both fresh produce and moving, as families look to get their children settled before a new school year begins. Growing up, I naively though I’d always live in Oregon. But I’ve come to appreciate things about each of the places I’ve lived. While I still don’t care for the really hot days of Utah summers or the icy winters here, and while I still love a good rainstorm for how green and fresh it makes things, I have learned to admire and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding mountains, I’ve learned to ski, and my family and I have enjoyed several beautiful white Christmases here. I’ve also learned the lesson that there are good people wherever you go. So if you’re new to Draper, welcome! We hope you’ll find happiness in putting down roots here. I’d encourage you to “plug in," not electronically, but socially, to the place you now live. Introduce yourself to your neighbors, volunteer with your church or your children’s school, or join an exercise class or an organization that you’d enjoy so you can make new acquaintances. It takes time for a new place to feel like home. But, in time, it can happen. To bloom where you’re planted grows happiness. And if you’re a native or someone who’s established roots here already, introduce yourself and welcome the newcomers, perhaps even with an offering of fresh flowers or produce from your garden. My family and I now realize that if a job was to move us away from the life we’ve built in Draper, there are many things and people that we’d miss upon leaving. I guess that’s the sign of having succeeded at blooming while here.
