Rooted in Love

Happy February, and welcome to our Love Local issue, where we highlight the heartbeat of our town: the remarkable individuals and businesses that inspire us daily.

This month naturally turns our thoughts to romance. While Valentine’s Day is often a celebration of love, this issue is dedicated to a broader kind of affection—the love we share for our community, its people, and the creative spirit that makes Dripping Springs so special.

Have you ever taken a moment to consider your web? I suppose the professional term is “network,” but I like to think of it as a personal web. Each connection leads to another, weaving a rich and intricate “web” of amazing people in your life. When we first started this publication, I worried that after just a few issues, we might have to branch out to neighboring towns like Johnson City or Austin to fill our pages. To my surprise, I was completely wrong. Each month, we’re faced with the delightful challenge of narrowing down an abundance of incredible local stories from webs formed here in Dripping Springs, as there are far too many to fit between our front and back covers.

Within the pages this month you’ll be reminded why supporting local is a form of love all its own. From the young entrepreneurs chasing big dreams to the talented musicians filling our town with song, the passion and dedication are contagious. We’re also thrilled to share a recap of our recent Love Thy Neighbor gala on page 52, where generosity took center stage, proving once again that our community’s heart is as big as Texas.

We’ve shined a light on local business owner Sara Kenton of Tupelo Goods, whose team continues to raise the bar. These stories are a celebration of what makes Dripping Springs truly unique: the relationships we build, the talents we nurture, and the ways we uplift one another.

As you read through this issue, we hope you’re reminded of the magic that happens when we come together to celebrate and support the people who make our town thrive.

Now, go treat yourself to a bouquet of flowers and chocolate with no remorse. And while you’re at H-E-B, remember that loving your neighbor and your community goes beyond a gimmicky holiday—it’s an everyday practice that strengthens and enriches the community around us.

texas gadget co.

The Texas Gadget Company is more than just a store. It’s the embodiment of the Lavengco family’s love for the outdoors, their commitment to family, and their passion for serving the community they call home.

For Michael Lavengco, the Texas Gadget Company is the culmination of a lifelong dream. After a 40-year career in corporate America, primarily in the waste industry, Michael yearned to immerse himself in his true passions: hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. This aspiration found fertile ground in Dripping Springs, where the area’s natural beauty and strong sense of community aligned perfectly with his vision.

The journey began during a duck hunting trip to Oklahoma, where Michael and his sons connected with J.P. Hewitt, owner of the original Gadget Company in Tulsa. This meeting ignited the vision of establishing a similar venture in Texas. After years of planning and securing the ideal location just off Highway 290, the Texas Gadget Company opened its doors, bringing a unique blend of high-quality outdoor gear and familial warmth to Dripping Springs.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Choosing Dripping Springs wasn’t just practical; it was personal. We know it as the “Gateway to the Hill Country.” The Hill Country’s wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities—hunting, fishing, hiking—created the ideal backdrop for a business centered on nature and adventure.

“Visiting the Tulsa store, I loved their vibe. It was comfortable; it felt familiar,” Michael’s wife, Cheryl, shares. “The feeling when you go into a store and don’t want to leave—that’s what we wanted.”

The Texas Gadget Company is undeniably a family affair. Cheryl, Michael, and their children, McKenzie, Michael II, and John Matt, have all been integral to the store’s development. From early childhood, the Lavengco kids were immersed in outdoor activities, fostering a love for nature that now drives the business.

“Family is so important,” John Matt shares. “I learned a lot from my dad. Being picked up from school early to go on hunting trips is a memory I’ll always cherish.”

A Love for Family, Community, and the Great Outdoors

John Matt’s journey is particularly noteworthy. After graduating from Texas A&M in 2023, he gained valuable retail experience at the Tulsa store, which not only prepared him for the Dripping Springs venture but also sparked a newfound passion for fly fishing. His enthusiasm has influenced the store’s offerings, ensuring that customers receive knowledgeable advice and access to premium products.

The carefully curated product selection reflects the Lavengcos’ dedication to outdoor pursuits. The store offers a wide range of high-quality hunting and fishing gear, knives, tools, apparel, luggage, and accessories from reputable brands such as SITKA Gear, Orvis, and Yeti. “The products we choose for the store are quality— they are meant to last through the

generations,” Michael explains. “I was the customer. I’ve used and appreciated these through my personal outdoor adventures, and I wanted to share these brands I trust with our customers.”

Texas Gadget Company is about more than selling gear; it’s about creating connections. “There was a need for this type of premium outdoor outfitter in this community, without having to venture into the big city or big-box store,” Michael notes. “We are different—a concierge of sorts. We want to hear about your adventures, help you find the best product, and make you feel like family.”

Customers feel this connection immediately. Within moments of stepping into the store, new visitors often express their excitement: “This is dangerous,” laughs a new customer.

“I will definitely be back,” adds another. “I could do some damage in here!”

“When you come in the door, it’s like a welcome to our home,” Michael shares. At the heart of this welcoming atmosphere is River, the family’s high-energy hunting dog. “As with everything else, River is a big part of our family,” Michael says. “He symbolizes family for us.”

At its core, the Texas Gadget Company is about fostering community connections. The Lavengcos believe the outdoors serves as a unifying force, bringing people together to create lasting memories. Their store isn’t just a retail space; it’s a gathering place where stories are shared and relationships are built.

As the Texas Gadget Company continues to grow, the Lavengco family remains committed to their founding principles: a love for the outdoors, dedication to family, and a deep respect for the community.

In a world that often feels disconnected, the Texas Gadget Company offers a sense of connection through its love of nature. By bringing people together with a shared adoration for the outdoors, it reminds us that home isn’t just a place—it’s where you’re surrounded by those you love.

BUILDING smiles, SHAPING futures

Central Park Pediatric Dentistry is more than just a dental practice; it’s a cornerstone for local families seeking a trusted partner in their children’s health and well-being. Designed with the needs of young patients and their parents in mind, the thoughtfully curated space, friendly atmosphere, and kid-focused approach make a world of difference, easing any anxieties about dental visits the moment families step through the door.

Daniel Johnson, D.D.S., a pediatric dentist, founded the practice in 2013, opening the doors of the central Austin location with the help of his wife, Kate. In 2023, they opened the Steiner Ranch location, and in summer 2024 the family opened its third location closest to their hearts, in Dripping Springs, where their family of six resides.

The mission was clear: “Create a space where we would want to bring our own children,” says Johnson.

Raised in a small town himself, Johnson always felt a strong connection to the close-knit nature of community life. His experiences growing up instilled in him the importance of building trust, which he carries over into his approach with both children and their parents. Dripping Springs is a perfect fit for the Johnson family, giving their four daughters a strong sense of belonging and home.

Dr.

Johnson’s Local Legacy

Now with the opening of their hometown office, there is nothing Johnson loves more than seeing his patients and their families “in the wild”—waving to them in the grocery store, cheering them on at local sporting events, and giving them high fives in school hallways while volunteering at his own children’s schools. It is this sense of community that brought the Johnsons to Dripping Springs.

Johnson’s pediatric dental training began at West Virginia University, where he earned his doctorate of dental surgery. After completing his degree, Johnson completed an advanced residency program at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, focusing on hospital-based dentistry. He then went on to specialize in pediatric dentistry through a rigorous residency program at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

His advanced training has equipped him with the skills to handle all aspects of children’s dental care, from routine checkups to complex procedures, always focusing on providing a positive, comfortable experience for every child.

As a dad of four, Johnson brings a personal understanding to his practice. He knows firsthand how important it is to build trust with children and their families, and he strives to make every appointment feel less like a dentist visit and more like a visit to family, with a clean, inviting space that sets a calming tone.

A dentist appointment can be a pivotal moment in a child’s life, shaping their view of oral health and affecting their self-esteem for years to come. Johnson’s own childhood dental experiences were so impactful that they continue to shape his philosophy and the compassionate care he provides today.

“Dental health starts with those first pivotal visits. Even though children may be too young to remember their first visits to the dentist, those experiences will stay with them throughout their lives,” says Johnson. “My job as a pediatric dentist is to meet all of my patients’ dental needs throughout their childhood, while also creating patients who will be comfortable and confident going into adulthood.”

Raised in a small town himself, Johnson always felt a strong connection to the close-knit nature of community life. His experiences growing up instilled in him the importance of building trust, which he carries over into his approach with both children and their parents.

Daniel Johnson, D.D.S.

The team is dedicated to building this confidence in its young patients, helping them develop not only healthy smiles but also the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health. “My best moments as a pediatric dentist are when a once-fearful patient comes in and gives me a fist bump, excited for the visit,” shares Johnson. “Children are amazing, resilient little humans, and I am privileged to get to help them.”

At Central Park Pediatric Dentistry, the approach also goes beyond simply addressing dental issues, as Johnson strives to empower children with the knowledge they need to care for their smiles for a lifetime.

The practice’s impact on local kids is far-reaching. From helping a child overcome their fear of the dentist to teaching young patients the importance of a consistent oral hygiene routine, Johnson’s work is making a positive, lasting impression on the next generation in Dripping Springs and beyond.

BRAINPOWER

CERESET HELPS YOUR BRAIN HELP YOU

From day-to-day challenges like work, traffic, and family to life-altering experiences such as losing a job, relationship, or loved one, the circumstances of life can take a toll on both your body and mind.

Scott and Carol Krippel, busy parents of six children, understand the weight of such overwhelming demands. After seeing two close friends experience the life-changing impact of Cereset, in 2022 the Krippels opened Cereset Hill Country, a center for brain wellness right here in Dripping Springs that offers an innovative, all-natural way to break the stress cycle and help individuals, families, and entire communities.

“We believe strongly that Cereset is a tool to help the brain of any client reach its optimal potential,” the Krippels share. “With a healthy brain, our clients experience better sleep, reduced anxiety, sharper focus. All of these can contribute to healthier relationships.”

The brain is central to how you experience the world—it is responsible for regulating and processing everything from breathing and digestion to emotions, memories, decision-making, spirituality, and personal connections. But stress can throw off your brain’s equilibrium, which then disrupts other aspects of your health and well-being.

The brain entrusts this balance to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), composed of two parts or “sides.” These two sides tend to function like a see-saw. Under stress, the brain can tend toward a “fight or flight” response (sympathetic) or a “freeze” response (parasympathetic). Both responses assist the brain in doing its job to protect you from dangerous or overwhelming situations; after all, it makes sense to run from a threat or withdraw after heartbreak.

The problem occurs when traumatic experiences, accidents, major life changes, or simply the day-to-day grind cause your brain to get stuck on one side or the other, compromising brain function and preventing you from operating at your full potential. “The balance is delicate and critical to our well-being,” the Krippels explain.

This is where the Cereset wellness experience can help. “Stress affects us all,” says Scott. “But when your brain is balanced, it helps you to break the cycle—not stay in that ‘triggered space’— and gives you the opportunity to get better.”

Cereset works by detecting your brain frequencies and using brain-initiated imaging to help the ANS reset. During a Cereset session, brain frequency sensors are placed on your head to record your brain activity. Then, your brain echoes a reflection of its own activity via a series of musical tones. Through this process, your brain recognizes that it is out of alignment, corrects itself, and restores a more balanced state.

“With a healthy brain, our clients experience better sleep, reduced anxiety, sharper focus. All of these can contribute to healthier relationships.”

Amazingly, your brain does all this work itself—without utilizing medication or outside intervention—while you rest quietly. “The brain is seeking to be balanced,” Scott and Carol explain. “Cereset simply equips the brain to return to balance.”

The brain’s self-correction can help relieve a myriad of troubling symptoms, including insomnia, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, lack of focus, depression, and more. Among others, Cereset sessions can greatly benefit those living with learning disorders, experiencing post-traumatic stress, or recovering from concussions, surgery, chemotherapy, or even long Covid.

Through Cereset, Carol first experienced more restful sleep, which led to a more balanced, peaceful state of mind. “It’s given me more energy and joy,” she shares. “When you’re feeling balanced and less stressed, you’re better able to enjoy your family. When parents are in a better place, every family member is in a better place.”

Carol extrapolates, noting that healthier minds and higher levels of well-being can benefit the whole community: Whether we are teachers, students, first responders, business owners, or civil servants, she says, “we’re all better people going out into the world and influencing others for the good.”

To widen this circle of influence and serve as many people as possible, a nonprofit foundation was recently established to help those who serve—namely veterans, active military, first responders, and civil servants—to experience Cereset. If you are interested in donating to bring relief to those who serve our community, please contact Scott and Carol to learn more. “We want to help those who help us,” says Carol.

Building Dreams, ONE HOME AT A TIME

Meet John Siemering, the heart and hands behind locally owned John Siemering Homes, a custom homebuilding company. With over four decades of experience in the building industry, Siemering’s passion lies in crafting homes that not only reflect his client’s visions but also honor the unique character of the land they are built upon. Known for his collaborative approach, commitment to quality, and deep ties to the area, Siemering is a trusted partner in helping families create their dream homes and cherished memories in the Hill Country. We sat down with Siemering to dive deeper into his story.

What inspires you when it comes to building homes in Dripping Springs, and how do you make sure each home feels like it belongs in this community?

I’m inspired by the diversity of clients and land in the Dripping Springs area, and I am truly honored to be entrusted to bring the clients’ vision from blueprint to breathtaking. It’s a privilege to build homes where people create and cherish lifelong memories. Each homesite presents its own unique challenges, so we work closely with our clients to capture the essence of the home, land, trees, and views that remind them why they built in Dripping Springs.

“We strive to understand the story behind the land and the client’s vision, combining those elements into a design that feels natural and intentional.”

How do you approach selecting materials and construction methods to ensure the homes you build not only stand the test of time but also support a sustainable lifestyle for families?

There is a cost vs. value proposition that we share with our clients from the very beginning. There is a cost to build the home and a subsequent cost to operate the home. To ensure clarity, I provide a detailed specification sheet denoting the products and materials we will use in their home—think of it as a window sticker on a new car. Over my 43 years in the building industry, I have learned the importance of offering materials and construction methods that provide the best value for today and the years to come.

Building a home is a big step for families—how do you make sure the process feels personal and smooth for your clients from start to finish?

Some of our clients are building their first custom home, and it can be intimidating. My job is to guide them through the homebuilding process, much like a planner would guide a lavish wedding. I listen intently to the vision my clients have for their new home and collaborate with the design team to achieve it. Recent clients have shared that our process conserves both their time and financial resources.

What are some of the ways you help families feel confident and at ease during the building process, and how do you work to exceed their expectations?

The most important way to make our clients feel confident and at ease is through transparency and open communication. People want to know what they are getting and what they are paying for, so we provide a detailed cost analysis and allowance worksheet. During construction, clients have 24/7 access to our web-based portal, which includes their home construction notes, schedules, and selections.

For clients who already have land in Dripping Springs, what makes working on those properties so special, and how do you approach designing a home that fits naturally into the land?

I want to know their story—how they came to buy or inherit the land and the special meaning behind its unique features or memories. I also want to know about the home they envision living in on that special piece of land. My team and I work to tie those two stories together, creating a home that fits seamlessly into the land and honors its significance.

CONTINUED >

Can you share how you collaborate with clients to make their vision come to life on their own property?

The process is deeply collaborative. We strive to understand the story behind the land and the client’s vision, combining those elements into a design that feels natural and intentional. Every detail is considered, ensuring the home aligns with their dreams and the character of the property.

Your team and your long-standing partnerships are a big part of your success. How do these relationships with architects, your sons, your wife, designers, and contractors help bring your clients’ dream homes to life?

The collaborative effort between the clients and the entire team—including architects and interior designers—produces a well-conceived and thoughtful plan. Addressing every detail up front minimizes the potential for change orders once construction begins. Working with my bride and sons is a dream come true because our goals and passion for homebuilding are perfectly aligned.

What’s the secret to the strong, collaborative relationships you’ve built with your team and partners over the years?

I once read a biography about Billy Graham, where he mentioned treating vendors and contractors as you would your best client. I’ve strived to apply that philosophy, and it has fostered a culture of consistent results for our company and clients. Our vendors and contractors, many of whom we’ve worked with for decades, often go above and beyond, giving our clients a white-glove experience they love to brag about.

As a local business, how do you see your work shaping the Dripping Springs community beyond just the homes you build?

I consider myself an ambassador for Dripping Springs. My tenure here as a local business owner, a Christian, a husband, a father, and a neighbor allows me to serve as a resource and connector for newcomers. This growing small town, lovingly called “Drip” by many, welcomed us so graciously when we moved here, and I strive to extend that same warmth to our new clients so they too can experience Dripping Springs the way we did the first time. I wouldn’t want to live or work anywhere else.

THY love NEIGHBOR

Dripping Springs City Lifestyle team: Melissa Svoboda, Abigail Thomsen, Kristen Hafner, Will Rivera, Karen Rivera, Morgan Slaughter, Annie O’Brien

On a lovely, warm December evening, Dripping Springs City Lifestyle (DSCL) rolled out the red carpet for a dazzling evening of community and connection at its third annual Love Thy Neighbor gala. A festive spirit of giving attracted a vibrant crowd, eager to contribute to a meaningful cause while enjoying a night of holiday cheer.

“The intent of our Love Thy Neighbor gala is actually quite simple,” says DSCL publisher Will Rivera. “We do this event to bring awareness and support to local nonprofits while bringing the community together.”

This year, the gala raised $27,000 to benefit the Dripping Springs Community Library; these funds will directly support the library’s plans to expand its current space to enhance resources for the growing Dripping Springs population.

“We are so lucky to live in a town where neighbors support one another in such a meaningful way,” says library director Mindy Laird. “The generosity and love shared at the gala will help create a space where learning, connection, and growth will flourish for generations to come.”

Surrounded by majestic oak and pecan trees, Pecan Springs Ranch provided a magical backdrop for the evening, the venue sparkling with festive decor and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests to mingle. Dripping Springs’ very own country duo, Paige and Kate of The Lockhearts, filled the room with their heartfelt tunes and beautiful harmonies.

Highlights of the evening included a fun, interactive selfie station, provided by Cory Brown of The Brown Insurance Group, Inc., for guests to capture joyful moments and silly poses with friends and colleagues. Attendees also lined up at the nostalgic Peachy Keen photo trailer to commemorate the evening using colorful, whimsical props.

From beer, wine, and cocktails to tacos, pasta, pasties, and more, guests enjoyed a smorgasbord of beverages and culinary delights. “The guests are able to enjoy catered food and drinks generously donated from restaurants, breweries, wineries, and distilleries—all local!” says Rivera.

This culinary adventure began with a sprawling charcuterie board provided by Marissa Fisk Catering, offering a gorgeous spread of delicious meats, cheeses, fruits, and other delicacies to whet the appetite. Next up, partygoers leisurely sampled different cuisines from local restaurants Pig Pen BBQ, Taste of Main, Hays City Store, FlyRite Chicken, and Pasta One Two Three, which featured unique flavors to please any palate.

To satisfy the holiday sweet tooth, Playa Bowls lured partygoers with wholesome and tasty treat-sized smoothie bowls and protein balls, and Carb Queen laid out a tempting display of delightful baked treats, from golden cookies to decadent cinnamon rolls.

The gala offered a sophisticated selection of beverages, allowing guests to indulge in beer, wine, or cocktails crafted with care by local breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Ghost Note Brewing, Twisted X Brewing, and Fitzhugh Brewing all showcased their best creations for the beer lovers in attendance, while wine enthusiasts sipped on selections from Hamilton Pool, Lost Draw, and Williams Chris Vineyards. Cocktail connoisseurs drew to the bar for specialty drinks featuring spirits from Treaty Oak Distilling, High Desert Vodka, Iron Wolf Ranch & Distillery, and Desert Door Distillery.

Chef Marrisa Fisk

A focal point of the evening was the raffle drawing, which presented a slew of exciting prizes, all donated by local businesses and community members. Items up for grabs ranged from a Ferrari for a day to a bison harvest at Roam Ranch, a signed Hootie and the Blowfish guitar, and getaways to Camp Hideaway, Camp Lucy, Palace Resorts, Galveston, or the Frio River. Guests eagerly purchased raffle tickets, knowing that every dollar would go directly to supporting the library.

Setting this gala apart was the heartwarming generosity of the guests and sponsors that made it possible. From the donated food and drinks to the raffle prizes, the event was a true testament to the spirit of Dripping Springs businesses and residents joining up for a shared cause.

DSCL editor Kristen Hafner shares, “I love seeing our community come together in such a meaningful way. Working for a publication that unites our community while supporting incredible causes is truly a blessing. The evening was beautiful in every sense of the word.”

The success of the 2024 Love Thy Neighbor gala will go a long way to support the Dripping Springs Community Library, which has been a vital resource for the town since 1985. Funds raised from the gala will help the library

expand its offerings and reach even more residents in the coming year with a vibrant, 37,000-square-foot, state-ofthe-art library building that will enhance the Dripping Springs community.

“We are thankful to the Dripping Springs City Lifestyle team for not only organizing this unforgettable night, but also for helping us share the story of our library and write the next chapter of this important community resource,” says Laird.

As the evening drew to a close, attendees left with full hearts, knowing they had contributed to a cause that strengthens the fabric of the community. For DSCL, the holiday gala was more than just a celebration—it was a reminder of the power of giving and the importance of supporting shared values.

“We’re incredibly thankful for everyone who contributed to making this night a success,” says Rivera. “Bringing the community together to build and foster relationships has been a top priority for us since we launched in 2022. I’m beyond grateful for the magazine team, our community for always showing up, and for God’s favor over Dripping Springs.”

KISS THE COOK

ARTICLE BY MOLLY MALLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN CLARK

Bren Isgitt always had a knack for business and a love of cooking, and even at a young age, she dreamed of owning her own business one day. She knew she was willing to work hard to achieve this dream, but she wasn’t expecting the many challenges she’d encounter along the way.

Born and raised on a dairy farm in Colorado City, Texas, Isgitt spent her free time helping with the farm and participating in 4-H cooking classes. At the same time, she watched her father run Bodine Bros. Dairy with integrity and honesty that inspired her to follow his lead.

She attended Texas Tech University in the 1970s, where she was one of few women in the business school, sparking her perseverant spirit as she broke through the stereotypes of the age. As soon as she graduated, she dove headfirst into her family’s first business venture: a clothing store. For many years, she served her family, helped run the store, and settled into life, all the while holding on to her dream of business ownership.

It wasn’t until 1998, at age 45, that Isgitt took her first big leap into the business world. She and a friend decided to purchase Kiss the Cook, a small kitchen supply store in Abilene, located in a strip mall with only 800 square feet of space. The friends-turned-business-owners quickly got to work to make improvements, wanting their store to feel familiar, where customers could find exactly what they’re looking for. Understanding that her customers deserve the very best, Isgitt personally vetted every product on her shelves, never wanting to sell something she didn’t believe in.

BREN ISGITT’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Within just three years, Kiss the Cook’s new business model and success necessitated a bigger space, so she and her business partner began looking outside of Abilene. They ended up in Wimberley, just outside Dripping Springs, where they fell in love with the town. Isgitt recalls how some of their community back in Abilene worried they wouldn't survive. “But they don’t know the Hill Country,” Isgitt says now. Although it was hard to push through the negativity, their belief in themselves carried them through.

They bought a 1940s house right on the Wimberley Square (interestingly, it used to be the home of the town’s switchboard operator during WWII) and began six months of renovations. In the meantime, they packed the Abilene location into a moving van and trekked it down to Wimberley. Finally, in October 2001, Kiss the Cook opened its doors and once again met with immediate success.

This success meant they were able to open a second storefront in Boerne five years later, after renovating yet another old home. Isgitt was definitely living out her business-owner dreams, reaping the rewards of patience and tenacity. However, managing two thriving store locations is no easy task; not wanting to scale back, they decided the best move was to split their ventures, each taking over one store. So in 2014, Isgitt retained ownership of the Wimberley location, while her business partner took over the Boerne store.

This was a pivotal moment: “That was the first time I didn’t have someone to lean on,” Isgitt says. She knew she’d either make it or she wouldn’t, and it would all depend on her. She proved her business savvy as her store gradually doubled its revenue in the years following the split. Since then, Isgitt has continued to run Kiss the Cook, keeping up the homey, personal atmosphere her customers have come to expect when they walk through the door.

Kiss the Cook is a great place to visit to solve cooking problems, correct recipe mistakes, and be challenged by new methods with the staff’s help. Dean Chambers, who trained as a chef in Italy and has 16 years of experience in the restaurant business, manages the shop. All of the staff members have cooking knowledge and experience, and they can advise on the best cookware, cutlery, and gadgets as well as techniques, knife skills, and proper use of tools.

Even now, at age 72, Isgitt is still thriving. “It’s never been a drudgery for me,” she says. “Not many people get to work in their passions.” These days, she no longer works in the store, preferring to handle the business side of things, while Chambers makes sure Kiss the Cook continues going strong.

Looking back, Isgitt is grateful to God for making her dreams a reality, and is even on the lookout for more opportunities for her store—with Isgitt in charge, it’s sure to be a shining success.

JEFF JONES’ JOURNEY, COMMUNITY, AND CULINARY PASSION

In a career marked by unexpected turns and unwavering dedication, Jeff Jones turned his passion for sports into a job he never expected. Born in El Paso, raised in Auburn, Alabama, and with a high school stint in Houston, Jeff’s journey has been

"IT

Incarnate Word. He balanced teaching during the day with attending class and studying at night and took an internship at a television station in San Antonio. That internship turned into a full-time job, where he spent two years before moving on to a role in Raleigh,

WAS THE FIRST TIME I’D FACED UNCERTAINTY, AND I WAS SCARED"

anything but ordinary. His love for team sports, especially basketball, started early, but it was his stepdad’s advice in eighth grade that changed everything: “He told me I’d be a better basketball player if I played football,” Jeff recalls with a laugh. “From there, football picked me.”

That advice led him to Trinity University, where he starred as a linebacker. Sports had always been a passion, but Jeff never imagined they would lead him to the broadcast world.

After earning his bachelor’s degree and a master’s in education, Jeff had a brief but pivotal moment of uncertainty. “There was a three-week gap between finishing my master’s and finding my first job. It was the first time I’d faced uncertainty, and I was scared,” he admits. As he sat watching SportsCenter, an idea started to form.

“I thought, maybe I could talk about sports for a living.”

With that spark of inspiration, Jeff went on to pursue another master's degree at the University of the

North Carolina. Three years later, in 2018, he moved his family back to Texas and took on the role of sports director at KVUE.

After living in North Austin for a few months, Jeff and his wife Keri started looking for a permanent place to raise their family. “My job is unique. We get to see all the pockets of our Austin community. I’d come to Dripping Springs for the Friday Game of the Week, and Drip was so welcoming,” he says. “The high school people were always so genuine. The kids weren’t jaded and they were so kind. My wife and I decided this would be a great place to raise our kids.”

Growing that family in Dripping Springs has been a joy for Jeff and Keri, who met in college and recently celebrated their 10th anniversary. The couple enjoys fantasy football and Jeff’s other passion: cooking. They have two children, a 5-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son. “My boy loves food and waking up really, really early,” Jeff jokes.

His daughter’s favorite place is the local H-E-B, where the floral department knows them by name. “She always gets a balloon and a macaroon. We’ve gotten to know everyone there. The community is so tight-knit, and that extends from the grocery store to the school to our neighborhood at Headwaters,” he says. “Everyone is so excited about our families growing up together. I can’t wait to see these kids competing for state championships and performing in plays 10 years from now. That feeling is so unique and special.”

Jeff’s passion for cooking blossomed during the coronavirus pandemic. “My in-laws gifted me a pellet grill for Christmas in 2019, just before the world shut down,” he says. “With sports on pause, I got really into cooking. I started following coaches and people I knew to get tips. I got hooked fast.”

His love for experimenting with food, researching new techniques, and creating his own interpretations has turned into a serious hobby. “I love reading, watching YouTube videos, and trying out different recipes,” he shares.

When it comes to his favorite dishes, Jeff doesn’t hesitate. “I love cooking jalapeno-smoked meatloaf, pork belly burnt ends, and creating special compound butters for turkey and steaks,” he says.

“FOOTBALL PICKED ME, AND COOKING HOOKED ME.”

With the Super Bowl just around the corner, Jeff has a few tips for anyone planning a party. “I like to serve mobile foods—no need to find a seat, just grab and go with one hand,” he advises. “Wings are always a hit. Focus on the sauces; they are an easy tool to cover up mistakes!” His go-to sauce is a hot lemon pepper creation. “I take a traditional buffalo sauce and add lemon juice and zest. It’s simple, but so flavorful.”

For a memorable party experience, Jeff recommends sliders made with King’s Hawaiian rolls and cold cuts. He brushes the top of the rolls with butter and seasonings. “I smoke them for a nice twist on a classic. It really feels elevated,” he explains. And of course, no Texas gathering would be complete without chips, queso, and guacamole.

Dripping Springs’ Young Entrepreneurs Build Business and Community

Heart & Hustle

Dripping Springs is a hub for some of the sharpest innovators and creators, and the next generation is rising in our town, leading the way in building new businesses and making a difference. We sat down with a handful of these young self-starters to talk about their journeys.

Danna Flores, 15 Handlevat

After searching unsuccessfully for the perfect phone case, Danna Flores ultimately decided to make her own, launching an online business, Handlevat. Learning from YouTube and her grandmother, Flores then added hand-crafted rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, anklets, and custom charms to her store.

Initially, Flores says rejection was tough, but with her parents’ encouragement she has learned about boutiques, wholesale, and consignment to get her products into local markets and build a loyal customer base. “I am confident,” she says. “I can talk to anyone, and I’ve learned so much about algorithms on Instagram and marketing a business successfully.”

Frustrated with the search for reliable cleaners for their own home, Elijah Hargraves and his parents launched The Clean Home Crew in 2024, specializing in residential, short-term rental, and commercial cleaning.

Hargraves now manages over 25 employees and 200 clients. He cares deeply for his cleaners, their kids, and the customers he serves. “We kill them with kindness,” he says. “Building relationships matters.”

Hargraves attributes his success to his faith and his parents, and he strives to set a good example for his younger siblings. “They are my motivators; I want to lead and show them that you can do whatever you set your mind to.”

Location: Cricket Hill Ranch

Born and raised in Dripping Springs, Nolan Jones started his power washing, landscaping, and lawn care business, Pressurized Perfection, in eighth grade. He landed his first jobs by knocking on neighbors’ doors, and now he manages his own employees.

“I appreciate how much our tight-knit community supports high schoolers with their entrepreneurship, and it matters,” he says. “I’ve learned how to market myself, accountability, taking responsibility, and leadership.” Jones plans on attending Texas Tech University in the fall to get his BBA in construction management.

A senior at DSHS, Boston Malik has always loved organizing and keeping things clean. Seeking freedom and control over his schedule, in 2023 Malik began interior vehicle detailing. Through referrals, his business took off and he works after school during the week.

“I think every high schooler can do entrepreneurship,” he says. “I love being able to pick my hours, put in effort, and save for college.” Malik is currently pursuing a future in real estate and investing. “I enjoy meeting new people. I feel much more confident and mature because of running my own business.”

When Callie Schumacher was 7 years old, her grandmother taught her how to knit beanies using a loom. Later, with the help of YouTube, Schumacher invented her own way to make soft and chunky blankets using only her hands.

Now her goods sell out at The Shabby Wick and at events from Johnson City to Christmas on Mercer.

“My favorite part is when people say how much they love my blankets and how soft they are,” Schumacher says. Her mom shares, “Callie has worked really hard, sticking with it when it wasn’t easy. I’m so proud of how she has gone outside her comfort zone.”

While on a road trip in 2018, Savannah Wilson learned how to crochet; a year later, she taught her younger sister Violet. The girls then started Sister Stitches, selling ornaments, amigurumi, market bags, scrunchies, and beanies at local markets. Their hand-crocheted goods can now be found at the Fair Dinkum coffee shop in Wimberley.

Savannah and Violet have gained valuable experience learning how to collaborate, even when they have differing ideas. “I love creating original patterns and teaching crocheting classes at the library,” Savannah shares. “Our favorite part is selling and talking with people,” adds Violet.

SARA KENTON AND TUPELO’S LOVE FOR OUTDOOR LIVING
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAFNER

Sara Kenton’s story isn’t just about building a business; it’s about giving your all. Founder of Tupelo Goods, Sara and her team have created a name in outdoor furniture that is synonymous with quality, simplicity, and fostering meaningful moments.

From the signature Loop Chair to the Zephyr Tree Swing, every piece is designed with the goal of ease and durability. Constructed using premium materials, Tupelo furniture is weather-proof, waterproof, and easy to clean. Tupelo’s sophisticated rotational molding technique creates simple designs for optimal support and comfort as well as elegance and beauty.

At its core, Tupelo is about creating spaces where families can connect. Sara reflects, “The older I get, the stronger I feel about the importance of getting outside—the health benefits, the way it organically creates moments for friends and family.”

Customers’ stories reflect this vision. Whether it’s a backyard barbecue where the kids swing under the oak trees or a quiet morning spent with coffee in hand, Tupelo’s products enhance everyday life. They make the outdoors a destination to linger, laugh, and reconnect.

The Kenton family has a lifelong connection to Dripping Springs, which continues to shape their family. Sara’s husband, Adam, grew up in Drip, and he is a veteran teacher of 17 years at Rooster Springs Elementary School. Now, the couple’s two kids, Miles and Drue, are involved in sports at Sycamore Middle School and Dripping Springs High School.

Tupelo’s contributions go beyond personal connections. By collaborating with local creatives and businesses in addition to participating in community events, the company helps spotlight Dripping Springs in meaningful ways. Locally, you can find Tupelo’s chairs at Texas Gadget Co., Summer Revival, Fitzhugh Brewing, HC Elite Cheer, and The Fitz RV park in Drip as well as CreekHouse Kitchen & Bar in Wimberley.

Tupelo also partners with local business Iconic Imprint for cornhole customization and collaborates with The Flowergirl ATX, photographer and videographer Ninth + Main, chef Marissa Fisk, and several local photographers such as Erika Knox, Kristen Hafner, and Ashlee Elledge.

“Dripping has such a rich creative community, and we are intentional about tapping into that community whenever possible,” Sara shares.

Tupelo is set to outfit the upcoming Oakwood Market in Dripping Springs, showcasing its versatility and reach. Tupelo chairs are even in use at the SpaceX Starbase, headquarters and rocket launch facility for the renowned space technology company.

Beyond Texas, Tupelo recently secured a partnership with Seaside, Florida, to furnish outdoor spaces in the iconic vacation destination.

“It’s incredibly fulfilling to see the hard work and creativity of our community come to life in places like New York City, L.A., and Florida,” says Sara. “Watching our community's talent make an impact on a larger stage reminds us how much local collaboration can achieve.”

her business, Sara gives nothing less than 100 percent to the task at hand.

For the team at Tupelo, this means choosing products that align with their inspired point of view, diving deep into market research and striking a balance between creative intuition and analytical precision. This blend of creativity and datadriven insight has propelled Tupelo forward, even amid challenges like the coronavirus pandemic and shifting economic landscapes.

“Watching our community's talent make an impact on a larger stage reminds us how much local collaboration can achieve.” — Sara Kenton

Sara’s life is a delicate balance of roles: entrepreneur, wife, and mother. Yet, like so many working mothers, she admits to feeling like she’s often in survival mode. “It’s hard to feel like you’re succeeding at anything,” she says candidly. But it’s the gratification of execution—seeing a project through from conception to completion—that drives her. Whether it’s planning a family trip, launching a new product, or growing

At a time when life feels busier than ever, Tupelo’s “keep it simple” philosophy is a breath of fresh air. From maintenance-free furniture to straightforward customer service, the brand’s ethos resonates deeply with today’s families. Tupelo is about creating beautiful outdoor furniture; at the same time, it’s about making it easier for families to spend time together and build their own communities.

Dripping Springs has a unique energy, and Sara marvels at the creativity and support within the community. “It’s amazing how much talent we are able to tap into here,” she says. This mutual support fuels Tupelo’s growth and reinforces its commitment to giving back.

As Tupelo continues to thrive, it remains rooted in Sara and her team’s vision: a brand that brings families together, celebrates community, and embraces simplicity in a complicated world. In doing so, Sara and the team at Tupelo Goods exemplify the very best of what it means to love local.

TWO LOCAL ESTHETICIANS PROVE COLLABORATION CAN THRIVE OVER COMPETITION

Fostering Community Over Competition

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

As two accomplished estheticians serving the same town, Brandi Hardy of Kalon Aesthetics and Courtney Deavers of Face Alchemy exemplify the spirit of collaboration over competition—building a relationship rooted in mutual respect and shared goals. Their approach highlights the value of lifting each other up, proving that success is sweeter when shared. Here, they discuss their perspectives on fostering community, building trust, and supporting one another while maintaining thriving individual practices.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?

“The thing I love most about the aesthetics industry is the ability to curate confidence,” says Deavers. “What we do as estheticians goes beyond just enhancing physical appearances; it’s about empowering people to feel their very best, both inside and out.”

Hardy echoes these sentiments about her chosen profession: “What I love most is empowering individuals to feel renewed, confident, and ready to conquer their day, knowing that our treatments contribute to their overall well-being.”

Courtney Deavers, C-FNP
“What we do as estheticians goes beyond just enhancing physical appearances; it’s about empowering people to feel their very best, both inside and out.”

WHAT ROLE DOES MUTUAL RESPECT PLAY IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP, AND HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THAT?

“Collaboration and mutual support are fundamental,” says Hardy. “We often consult each other for advice, share best practices, and refer clients to ensure they receive the most appropriate treatments. This collaborative spirit enhances the quality of care and ensures clients have access to a comprehensive range of services.”

Deavers agrees: “Collaboration is vital to creating a healthy community. Mutual respect fosters open communication, trust, and a shared commitment to excellence. By valuing diverse perspectives and recognizing the uniqueness of others, I’m able to grow both personally and professionally.”

HOW

DO YOU BALANCE PROMOTING YOUR INDIVIDUAL BUSINESSES WHILE SUPPORTING EACH OTHER?

“You attract what you put out,” says Deavers. “When you genuinely support others, it comes back tenfold. Celebrating each other's successes, sharing expertise, or offering encouragement creates a culture of mutual growth. Balancing promotion and support happens organically when the focus is on relationships rather than competition.”

Hardy shares this focus on encouraging each other. “By staying open and supportive, we create a positive environment where everyone benefits,” she says. “Sharing insights, best practices, and referrals ensures that clients’ needs are met in the best possible way. Supporting one another strengthens the community.”

WHAT ARE SOME UNIQUE WAYS YOU APPROACH CUSTOMER CARE THAT REFLECT YOUR

COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY?

“Our approach to customer care is deeply personalized,” says Hardy. “By fostering long-term partnerships, we support clients throughout their health and wellness journeys, emphasizing natural results and honest guidance tailored to their individual goals.”

“By valuing diverse perspectives and recognizing the uniqueness of others, I’m able to grow both personally and professionally.”

For Deavers, “Consistency is key. Always deliver on promises and treat every client like they matter,” she says. “Building authentic relationships and being involved in community events goes a long way in establishing trust and credibility.”

LEND SOME ADVICE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN A SMALL TOWN.

“Your reputation is the cornerstone of success. Focus on building authentic relationships and being involved in community events,” Deavers suggests.

Hardy recommends, “Build a network of professionals you can consult with and learn from. Staying open and supportive creates a positive environment where everyone benefits.”

HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE IN MAINTAINING A THRIVING BUSINESS WHILE RESPECTING EACH OTHER’S SPACE AND INDIVIDUALITY?

“We see each other as partners rather than competitors,” says Hardy. “Staying open and supportive ensures we all succeed in our shared mission to help clients feel confident and beautiful.”

Deavers agrees, sharing, “It’s about supporting and cheering each other on without feeling the need to compete. This town is big enough for all of us. By knowing our own individual paths, we can celebrate each other's achievements. Community over competition, always.”

THE LOCKHEARTS

and

Soul Sisters
Blood Harmony

Nineteen-year-old Paige and 17-year-old Kate Leisy are the country music sister duo, The Lockhearts. They have been singing together since they could talk and have always wanted to be singers. As Kate finishes high school and they pursue music fulltime, they’ve written and released five singles, culminating in their first EP release in March 2025.

When they were just 10 and 12 years old, the Lockhearts began writing songs together—and they’ve continued, writing one new song every week for years. Kate explains, “We feel stronger together. Our voices have that sister blood harmony and it just felt right.” What began as a surprise ukulele gifted by their dad led to the sisters playing piano and guitar and taking voice and guitar lessons at Hudson’s on Mercer. Now, Paige teaches there.

Paige shares her heart: “Music creates moments for people. I love when I listen to a song and what it signifies to me at that moment of my life. I want to create music that people not only can relate to, but feels nostalgic.”

CONTINUED >

“The lost harmonies we used to hear in bands like the Dixie Chicks and the Everly Brothers are sounds we want to bring back. People are clinging to and longing for things with an old-timey feel,” Kate adds. “It catches people’s attention—an old sound with new style. We’re a little bit folk, country, and alternative, but the blending of harmonies has an old-soul feel to it with modern production.”

They love co-writing together and seeing fans impacted by their music. “Music is art and a beautiful thing to connect to,” shares Paige. “Everyone can relate to music and be bound together by it. Singing creates a special experience and moment. While some may feel numb from depression, music can make you feel something again and feel less alone.”

“Music creates moments for people. I love when I listen to a song and what it signifies to me at that moment

They have performed at Founders Day, Hudson’s on Mercer and the Songwriters Festival, and they have even caught the ear of music labels in Los Angeles. The Lockhearts are excited about the future. “There is so much more yet to come. No matter how far we tour, we will always come back to our roots here in Dripping Springs. We love our community and can’t thank you enough for your support!”

Their latest single “Porchlight” releases in February on all streaming platforms.
