Advanced hair restoration options at Hair Transplant Specialists in Eagan, MN, where personalized care meets expert techniques
ARTICLE BY ANNE SCHREIBER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CLINE
For many, hair loss is more than a physical change—it’s a deeply personal experience that can impact self-esteem and confidence. At Hair Transplant Specialists (HTS) in Eagan, MN, the dedicated team sees each patient’s path to hair restoration as an investment in themselves. It’s all about offering personalized care and the best techniques to achieve the best possible results.
“We provide a space where patients feel cared for, informed, and at ease. Every detail of their experience matters.”
Kasia Muzyka, the clinic director, brings over two decades of experience to the practice. Having started her career in the hair transplant field in London in 2002, she moved to Minnesota in 2010 to work alongside Dr. Shapiro, a pioneer in the industry. In early 2023, Kasia and Dr. Shapiro took over HTS from its retiring owner, combining their passion and expertise to create a patient-focused practice.
“I’ve worked behind the scenes in hair restoration for years, and transitioning to the business side has been an incredible experience,” says Kasia. “The most rewarding part is seeing patients eight months to a year after their procedure. So many young male patients come to us after experiencing hair loss and the confidence issues that often accompany it. Watching them regain their self-esteem and start taking better care of themselves—it’s about so much more than just hair. Helping someone change their life in such a big way is so special.”
A PERSONALIZED AND COMFORTABLE EXPERIENCE
Patient coordinator Irina Siruk, who joined HTS in mid-2024, feels the same as Kasia. “I’ve always loved being in the medical field. In hair restoration, no two procedures are the same. It’s such a unique opportunity to meet people and help them feel like themselves again.”
While the majority of HTS clients are men, they also see many female patients experiencing hair loss for a variety of reasons. Years of tight braiding or frequent eyebrow plucking can lead to permanent hairline thinning and many women over 40 notice changes due to peri-menopause or menopause. HTS takes a holistic approach beyond surgery, incorporating education, medications, and the latest technology, such as Alma TED—an ultrasound-based treatment combined with growth factors to promote hair regrowth.
This said, hair transplant procedures at HTS are conducted with local anesthesia, which minimizes downtime and discomfort. For additional relaxation, patients are offered Valium to help them stay at ease during the six- to eight-hour procedure. The team takes time to make sure every patient feels comfortable and informed every step of the way.
“The most uncomfortable part of the process is the initial anesthesia, similar to a dental numbing injection,” explains Kasia. “Once the area is numb, patients don’t feel anything. Some describe it as feeling like wearing a helmet—there’s no pain, just a heaviness.”
Patients can relax in a private room with a largescreen television during the procedure, watching movies or even napping. The team even schedules a break for lunch for everyone involved, making sure that the experience is pleasant and accommodating.
ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR NATURAL RESULTS
Hair Transplant Specialists offer two primary methods of hair restoration: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both techniques are effective, but the choice depends on individual needs and preferences.
FUT involves removing a small strip of skin from the back of the scalp, from which follicles are micro-dissected and planted in the desired areas. While this method may leave a linear scar, it’s often an excellent option for female patients who do not want to cut the donor area short, or for patients who are not candidates for FUE.
FUE involves extracting individual follicles from the donor area. This technique leaves tiny, nearly invisible scars and is more popular these days because of less downtime in healing. But both procedures are complementary to each other.
“Hair restoration is about more than just hair— it’s about regaining confidence and feeling good in your own skin.”
“Many patients find FUE less invasive and easier to recover from,” says Irina. “Patients who’ve had both procedures often prefer FUE because it’s more comfortable during the healing process.”
After the follicles are extracted using either method, HTS employs their proprietary Microprecision Follicular Grafting® technique to provide natural-looking results. Although some companies market FUE as a “scarless” option, HTS emphasizes honesty and transparency in patient education.
“The truth is, no procedure is entirely scarless,” Kasia explains. “FUE doesn’t leave a linear scar like FUT, but there are still very small, nearly invisible scars.”
THE PATH TO EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS
Hair restoration isn’t an instant transformation. However, patients begin to see partial results within a few months, with full results typically visible eight months to a year after the procedure. “The results are long-lasting— essentially forever when supported with the proper medication,” Kasia adds.
Both Kasia and Irina find what they do to be deeply fulfilling, especially as they witness the emotional transformations of their patients. “It’s incredible to see someone walk in feeling self-conscious and leave our office months later demonstrating this renewed sense of confidence,” says Irina. “It’s why we do what we do.”

STRATEGIES TO PROTECT YOUR FUTURE AND PREPARE YOU FOR LIFE'S CHANGES.
Insurance: Part of Financial Readiness
ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA STAMM
““Your situation is unique, and we can help figure out the right fit.”
Financial readiness often starts with stocks, bonds, or real estate, but many people forget that insurance can be part of a balanced plan. Recently, I chatted with Mike Theisen from State Farm, to talk about how different forms of coverage can protect what matters most, all while helping build a stronger financial foundation.
Mike works out of the Woodbury office on Currell Boulevard, but he serves customers all over Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin, too. As we chatted, he shared his experiences, insights, and a bit of his personal story.
INSURANCE STATISTICS THAT MIGHT SURPRISE YOU
According to recent data shared by The Zebra, roughly 60% of Americans have some type of life insurance policy. Among that group, 44% view it primarily as income replacement if something unforeseen happens. Another interesting statistic reveals that 83% of Americans say they would purchase life insurance if it were simpler to grasp. Perhaps most interestingly, LIMRA suggests that 78% of people overestimate the true cost of a life insurance policy. And so, although many people recognize the benefits of coverage, some remain unsure about how to get started or how to understand the details.
LIFE INSURANCE AS AN ASSET
“Life insurance can be a strong piece of your financial plan,” Mike notes. “Many folks don’t realize that certain policies can lock in premiums and act like an asset down the line.” He points out that while some individuals want the most budget-friendly option, others find it worthwhile to invest a bit more upfront.
This move may allow them to save better and plan with added confidence for future needs. By treating life insurance as more than just a safety net, you can potentially build a layer of financial stability for yourself and your loved ones.
UMBRELLA POLICIES FOR EXTRA PROTECTION
One type of coverage that Mike often recommends is an umbrella policy. “If I meet with ten people,” he says, “we talk about umbrella coverage for all of them. And after discussing it, about six or more decide they want the additional peace of mind.” Umbrella policies can step in if you face a lawsuit—covering pain and suffering, loss of income, and more. In Minnesota, the average death or disability settlement hovers around $700,000, yet umbrella coverage premiums often remain within reach. “We live in a very lawsuit-heavy society,” Mike explains. “It’s better to be prepared than to take a big financial hit later.”
SHIFTING TRENDS IN MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN
If you’re a homeowner in Minnesota or Wisconsin, you might have noticed some big changes in how insurance companies handle wind and hail claims. Recent storms have pushed certain insurance providers to pull out of the region entirely. Others have significantly raised deductibles or hiked rates to cover mounting losses. One example: the hailstorm on August 11, 2023, which caused an estimated $1.1 billion in damages across the region, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. All of this has led to frustration for homeowners, especially in the face of inflation driving up the cost of claims.
WHEN LIFE CHANGES, INSURANCE CHANGES TOO
Major life events—like getting married, getting divorced, starting a new job, having a child, or sending a teenager out on the road—can influence what coverage best suits you. Mike explains, “If your income goes up, you might want to protect more. If you’ve built up savings or bought a larger home, those are signs that it might be time to adjust your policy.”
Even something as exciting as adding a teenage driver to your family can alter the discounts or coverage you might consider. The most important part, Mike says, is taking the time to review what you have whenever these big life shifts happen. “We don’t want you over- or under-insured. Your situation is unique, and we can help figure out the right fit.”
THE ADVANTAGE OF WORKING WITH A LOCAL AGENT
These days, it’s easy to click your way through an online insurance quote. But Mike believes there’s something special about dealing with a local professional. “If you get into a car accident or your house has a fire, you’ll want someone who knows you,” he says. “Folks who call those national 1-800 numbers don’t always have the advantage of working with someone who understands state-specific laws. It can lead to confusion and frustration.”
A PASSION FOR HELPING OTHERS UNDERSTAND
Mike has been in the industry since 2015, initially drawn in by a friend who opened her own State Farm office. A single father with a teenage daughter, he was looking for a path that would offer balance and financial opportunity. “I never thought I’d go into insurance and financial services,” he recalls, “but I’ve found that many people feel overwhelmed by it. I love breaking down the information simply so clients feel more comfortable about what they’re getting.”
He sees his role as part advisor, part teacher: “I enjoy talking to people about insurance. It might not be a fun topic, but it is important. We want to help protect you from the unexpected. Our goal is to keep that risk to you as low as possible.” Whether it’s life, auto, home, or any other form of coverage, Mike tries to clarify something that can seem complicated at first glance.
If you’ve been wondering whether your own insurance setup is working for you—or if you’re missing opportunities for stronger financial security—consider connecting with a local agent who takes the time to understand your goals. And if you happen to be in Minnesota or Wisconsin, Mike Theisen at State Farm in Woodbury is just a call or visit away.
SEO: the smart business investment
How Portkey SEO Solutions Helps Businesses Thrive Online
When Sama Ali-Berchem took on marketing for her husband’s construction company in 2015, she had no idea it would lead to a successful and rewarding business of her own.
Equipped with insights from a marketing mentor and a knack for getting results, she quickly realized the power of organic search. Before long, the phone of her husband’s company was ringing nonstop, and together, they saw an opportunity—why not take this expertise and build something bigger? That spark ignited Portkey SEO Solutions, a digital marketing agency dedicated to helping businesses stand out online.
In the early days, Sama noticed a common problem: many small businesses had websites and blogs, but their content wasn’t working for them. Most of it was generic, duplicated, or lacked strategy. She knew that to see lasting results, companies needed more than just a website—they needed an ongoing, thoughtful approach to search engine optimization (SEO).
Today, nine years later, Portkey SEO Solutions continues to prove that good content, paired with a long-term strategy, delivers powerful results. Sama’s first-ever client is still with her today, and that speaks volumes.
ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER
SEO IS A LONG GAME—AND WORTH IT
Many business owners want quick results, but SEO isn’t a oneand-done effort. It’s a steady investment with returns that grow over time. The first year may show moderate traction, but by year two, businesses start seeing stronger engagement. By year three, the return on investment is undeniable.
"If you give up after two months, you’re missing out on the real benefits," Sama explains. "SEO compounds over time, much like hiring a business coach. The commitment pays off."
That’s why Portkey helps clients build three- to five-year marketing strategies that align with their business growth goals. From solo entrepreneurs to mid-sized teams, Portkey supports many industries, including construction, eCommerce, dental clinics, medical practices, and restaurants. They’ve even helped professionals build online resumes that help them stand out in a crowded marketplace.
HELPING BUSINESSES GET FOUND
Portkey’s mission is simple: help clients look good and get found. This means creating high-quality content, optimizing websites, and continuously refining strategies to keep up with search trends.
"A strong digital presence isn’t optional anymore—it’s necessary for growth," Sama says. "We take that piece off their plate so they can focus on what they do best."
A COMPANY BUILT ON TALENT AND RESPECT
As a minority female business owner, Sama has built a company rooted in quality and inclusivity. Hiring at Portkey isn’t just about filling roles—it’s about finding people with potential, drive, and a willingness to learn.
"We want people who are passionate, open-minded, and bring fresh perspectives to the team. Skills can be taught, but mindset and respect for others are non-negotiable," she says. "We’ve built a team founded on collaboration, which makes Portkey successful."
INVESTING IN YOUR BUSINESS’S FUTURE
For new business owners, investing in marketing is a must. SEO is a powerful tool that helps businesses get noticed and stay competitive. Portkey SEO Solutions offers more than just a service—it offers a partnership, guiding businesses through sustainable growth with a strategy designed to keep them moving forward.
Sama’s path, from helping her husband’s construction company to leading a successful SEO agency, is proof that smart marketing choices lead to lasting results. For businesses ready to take that next step, investing in SEO isn’t just smart—it’s changing the game.

Running a business is more than just offering a great product or service—it’s about creating relationships, understanding your industry, and staying connected to your community. That’s where the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce has become such a benefit to businesses across the south metro area. With over 445 members across nine cities, the Chamber is a network built on meaningful connections, advocacy, and education. Whether you’re a startup looking for guidance or a seasoned business owner seeking fresh opportunities, investing in the Chamber is an investment in both you and your business.
A CHAMBER THAT WORKS FOR YOU
Jon Althoff, President and Chief Mission Officer of the Dakota County Regional Chamber, knows firsthand how valuable these connections can be. Having served on the board for over a decade before stepping into the executive leadership role, he understands that businesses thrive when they have a voice. “Our role is to be the voice of the business community and the connector within the community,” he shares. The Chamber doesn’t just exist for networking—it exists to make sure businesses are heard, supported, and given the tools they need to succeed.
What does that look like in practice? With over 100 in-person events annually, plus virtual networking opportunities, business owners have constant chances to engage with professionals who can offer insight, partnerships, and solutions to common challenges. Many members don’t necessarily network with each other to sell but to find answers, whether that means hiring new employees, retaining staff, understanding legislative changes, or overcoming operational hurdles. The Chamber is a hub where businesses seek advice, resources, and collaboration.
A STRONG BUSINESS COMMUNITY STRENGTHENS EVERYONE
A successful and booming business community is foundational to a thriving city. “If you don’t have businesses, you don’t have employers to pay salaries. You don’t have the places you rely on for everyday needs— your hair salon, your grocery store, your medical care,” Althoff explains. The Chamber works to support local businesses so they can continue to provide jobs, services, and a sense of stability for the entire region.
Dakota County is already one of Minnesota's most economically significant areas, ranking third in population and economic power. By 2036, it’s projected to become the second-largest in the state. People choose to live and work here because of the strong local economy, excellent schools, and safe neighborhoods. The Chamber plays an integral role in maintaining this balance, making sure businesses not only survive but thrive so that the community continues to be a desirable place to call home.
ADVICE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS: HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF MEMBERSHIP
Not every business chooses to join a Chamber, but for those looking to engage with the broader community, it can be an invaluable resource. “We do the legwork of creating the events—you decide how much or how little you participate,” says Althoff. “What you put in is what you get out.” Some members take full advantage of networking events, while others simply benefit from the publicity through the Chamber’s website, newsletters, and social media outreach.
Membership isn’t just about gaining business—it’s also about giving back. By supporting local commerce, you’re contributing to a stronger community overall. When businesses invest in the Chamber, they’re investing in the future of Dakota County, ensuring that it remains a place where businesses and residents alike can succeed.
THE CHAMBER IS YOUR PARTNER IN SUCCESS
For business owners who want to grow, connect, and make an impact, the Dakota County Regional Chamber of Commerce is the partner you’ve been looking for. With a mission to support local businesses through advocacy, education, and meaningful connections, it offers countless opportunities to engage, learn, and build lasting relationships.
If you’re ready to take the next step in growing your business and deepening your connection to the community, consider the Dakota County Regional Chamber. Because when you invest in your business, you invest in your future—and in the bright future of Dakota County.

A COMMUNITY THAT RUNS TOGETHER
EAGAN PARKRUN
Set against the backdrop of Thomas Lake Park, Eagan parkrun is more than just a weekly 5K event: it’s a global phenomenon with a local heart. Every Saturday, runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages and abilities gather to participate in this free, timed event.
“WHEREVER
YOU
GO,
married," says Andy Borne, one of the event's co-directors.
A hallmark of the parkrun experience is the post-run gathering. Participants head to a local coffee shop for conversation and camaraderie. “It’s essential to have a place for socializing after the
YOU’RE WELCOMED AS PART OF THE PARKRUN COMMUNITY.”
The Eagan parkrun is part of the international parkrun movement, which originated in the United Kingdom. Today, it boasts over 2,000 events worldwide, with Eagan being one of three locations in the Twin Cities area. Like its counterparts worldwide, the Eagan event adheres to the parkrun philosophy of accessibility: it’s entirely free, open to everyone, and fosters a welcoming environment for participants of all fitness levels. Whether you are a seasoned athlete striving for a personal best or a casual walker looking to enjoy the outdoors, there is a place for you at the starting line.
BUILDING COMMUNITY, ONE STEP AT A TIME
What sets Eagan parkrun apart is its focus on community. Participants often remark on the event’s social benefits. Some have found friends, improved their health, and even met their spouses through parkrun. "We even had a couple who met through parkrun, dated, and eventually got
run,” explains Andy. “It gives people a chance to connect beyond the course, share their experiences, and build lasting friendships.”
THE HEARTBEAT OF PARKRUN: VOLUNTEERS
Behind the scenes, Eagan parkrun is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers. Each week, at least six volunteers ensure the event runs smoothly, serving as race directors, timekeepers, tail walkers, and token distributors. Regular participants are encouraged to volunteer occasionally, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and engagement.
A GLOBAL NETWORK
While Eagan parkrun is a local gem, it’s also part of a vast global network. Participants from around the world often join while visiting Minnesota, bringing an international flair to the event. Similarly, Eagan residents traveling abroad can participate in parkruns in places as far-flung as Singapore, South Africa, and Australia.
This interconnectedness fosters a sense of belonging that transcends borders. “It’s almost like a family. Wherever you go, you’re welcomed as part of the parkrun community.”
FREE AND ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL
One of parkrun’s most remarkable features is its commitment to being free for everyone. There are no registration fees or ongoing costs, making it an accessible option for those who want to stay active without financial barriers. After registering online and receiving a personal barcode, participants can join any parkrun worldwide. This no-cost model is particularly appealing in a world where organized races can cost $50 or more. “It’s refreshing to have a weekly event that’s free, reliable, and focused on community rather than profit,” says Andy.
A LASTING IMPACT
Eagan parkrun has grown beyond a running event to become a vibrant community hub. It inspires participants to prioritize health, fosters meaningful connections, and showcases the power of inclusivity. Andy notes, “The motivation comes from the community. It’s something bigger than yourself.”
Whether you’re a lifelong runner or someone looking to try something new, Eagan parkrun offers an opportunity to be active, meet new people, and be part of a global movement. So lace up your sneakers, grab your barcode, and head to Thomas Lake Park this Saturday—you might just find your new favorite tradition.
Frozen’s Brody Breen Takes the Stage
EAGAN HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE STEPS
INTO A MAGICAL PRODUCTION
ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER
At just 16, Brody Breen has already found his rhythm on the stage. Whether performing in Eagan High School’s productions, competing in speech tournaments, or preparing for a thrilling run at the Children's Theatre in Minneapolis, he always has a script and a story to tell.
This spring, Brody will participate in Frozen , running April 15 - June 15, 2025, at the Children's Theatre. He’ll be part of the ensemble, playing a hidden folk character in Fixer Upper, and also singing and dancing throughout the show. On top of that, he’s understudying another role.
“Each day can be different,” Brody says. “One day, I could be on my normal track, but I could also be called on to play another role. It’s exciting to learn two roles at once.”
Landing a spot in Frozen was a dream come true for Brody. “At the time the season was announced, I didn’t have any connection at the Children’s Theatre, but I knew I wanted to be part of it,” he says. “It’s so exciting to be in a production of this size.”
A PASSION FOR PERFORMANCE
Brody's love for theater extends far beyond Frozen . He just wrapped Eagan High School’s The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane at Eagan High School, an experience he describes as a blast. But theater isn't his only stage—he also competes in speech tournaments every Saturday in the Humorous Interpretation category.
“I take a 10-minute speech from a movie, play, or book and retell it on my own,” he
explains. “No props, no costumes—just me using my body and voice to bring the story to life.”
When he's not performing, Brody is constantly learning. “Children’s Theatre is nothing but fun,” he says. “It’s amazing to be in the room, learning the show, and bringing the production to life.”
THE MAGIC OF FROZEN
As we all know, Frozen was an instant hit when the movie made its debut in November 2013. And like many film fans, Brody has a favorite moment from the original movie: Elsa belting out Let It Go. But he’s just as excited for a number in the stage version called Colder by the Minute
“Elsa is trapped in the storm, and the whole song is a huge storytelling moment,” he says. “The way the music is set up, the volume shifts, and the dance style all add to the intensity. I know there will be some amazing effects happening in the production.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
When summer rolls around, Brody will be working at Eagan High School’s Summer Theater Camps, sharing his love of the stage with younger students. And come fall? You can bet he’ll be back at it, chasing the next great role.
For now, you can catch him bringing the magic of Arendelle to life at the Children's Theatre this spring. And if you're in the audience, keep an eye out—he might not be playing the character you expect that evening.
“It’s so exciting to be in Frozen —every day brings something new. I get to learn, perform, and be part of a production I’ve loved for years.”

INVEST IN YOUR GREENS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD

JANIE JONES
Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.
DANDELION GREENS:
Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.
BROCCOLI:
Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS:
Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.
KALE:
Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.
ARTICHOKES:
Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.
ASPARAGUS:
Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.
SPINACH:
Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.
