Happy December Eagan and Mendota Heights! I can't believe that in the blink of an eye, 2024 has gone by and the holidays are upon us!
As the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on the warmth and joy that this time of year brings to our local community. There’s something magical about the twinkling lights that adorn our streets, and one of my favorite traditions is driving around with my family to admire all the beautiful displays. Each house tells a story, filled with the spirit of the season, and it’s a cherished moment that brings us closer together.
This year, I am excited to continue another beloved tradition: caroling! There’s nothing quite like gathering with friends and neighbors to sing holiday classics. The laughter, the camaraderie, and the joy we spread truly embody the essence of giving. I love how music can connect us, creating a sense of unity and happiness that transcends any differences we might have.
In the spirit of sharing, another one of my favorite ways to celebrate the holidays is to bake cookies and treats and make my famous chocolate-covered caramel apples. The kitchen fills with delightful aromas as batches of festive goodies are whipped up, which are then shared with family and friends. It’s not just about the delicious treats; it’s about the love and care that goes into each one. Delivering them to friends and neighbors is a small way to brighten their day and remind them that they are part of our community.
This holiday season, let’s embrace the spirit of giving by reaching out to those around us. Whether through acts of kindness, sharing a meal, or simply a friendly smile, we can make our community feel a little warmer and brighter. Together, let’s create memories that last a lifetime, reminding us all of the true meaning of the holidays.
As always, I would like to thank all of Eagan City Lifestyle’s sponsors. Their generous support enables us to get our magazine directly into our readers’ homes. Please don’t hesitate to contact me (amy.sousa@citylifestyle.com) if you have a story to share or a business to recommend.

Grinch Steals Christmas and Our Hearts at Children’s Theatre Company
There’s something truly magical about holiday traditions, and the Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) in Minneapolis has a beloved one that keeps families coming back year after year: Dr. Seuss’s
How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Running from November 5, 2024, to January 5, 2025, this production continues to capture the holiday spirit with heartwarming music, whimsical storytelling, and a message about kindness and community.
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with three key figures in the production: Dean Holt, the show’s director, Reed Sigmund, who has played the Grinch seven times, and local student Brody Breen, a rising talent from Eagan.
THE HEART BEHIND THE STORY: A DIRECTOR’S
Dean Holt, who has been involved in this production since its world premiere in 1994, reflected on his long journey with The Grinch. Having played multiple roles in the show over the years, from a Who in Whoville to the Grinch himself (as the understudy on a prior production), Holt's deep connection with the material now comes through in his direction. At the helm of the production, he’s excited to bring the nostalgia as well as fresh updates to the stage.

Holt shared that this year’s production leans into the heart of storytelling, stating, “Holidays, traditions—they all come from memories. It’s about being together as people, as a community, and drawing on our pasts for that.” One of his favorite moments happens in the second act when the Whos are preparing for Christmas in a song called “Now is the Time.” It’s this very moment that he feels captures the essence of holiday traditions.
And while The Grinch may have become a tradition for many families, Holt promises new surprises for those who return year after year. “We’ve adjusted songs, added new props, and even introduced some fresh audience interaction moments. We want to keep the experience exciting and engaging for everyone.”
Reed Sigmund, the actor who plays the Grinch in this year’s production, brings emotion and energy to the role. He’s no stranger to the green costume, having played the Grinch seven times.
Born in Fargo, North Dakota, Sigmund discovered his love for acting as a shy child. His journey from school plays to the prestigious Children’s Theatre Company has spanned nearly 25 years. “I was a shy kid in many ways,” Sigmund explained, “but I fell in love with acting. Auditioning for any play I could find helped me find my place.”
When asked about his favorite scenes, Sigmund couldn’t choose just one. “I love interacting with the audience, but one of my favorite moments is when the Grinch is on the mountain at the end and hears the Whos singing. That’s when everything changes—the lights, the set, and the Grinch himself.”
“There’s something very human about the Grinch. He starts from a place of loneliness and bitterness, but through kindness, he learns to open his heart. I love that I get to take the audience on that journey.”
And though the Grinch may hate Christmas, Sigmund certainly doesn’t. “Christmas is my favorite holiday,” he laughed. “My tree goes up on November 1st every year.”
Adding a local flavor to the production is Brody Breen, a 10th grader at Eagan High School who plays one of the Who children. Brody’s path to the stage is an inspiring one. He attended a theater camp when he was just six years old, and that didn’t quite capture his interest. But after seeing Wicked on stage, he was hooked.
Since then, Brody has been involved in productions at Stages Theater and Eagan High School. When his parents received an email about an opportunity to audition for The Grinch, Brody jumped at the chance. He sang, danced, improvised during the audition—and landed the role.
For Brody, the opportunity to perform in such a beloved holiday show is a dream. “It’s cool to be a part of something so big,” he said. “There’s something magical about being in the room, even if you don’t get the part. Auditioning is part of the fun.”
When asked about his favorite scenes, Brody quickly told me that it's, “Who Likes Christmas,” the opening number where the Whos prepare for the holidays. “It’s such a fun, high-energy scene. Everyone’s excited and setting up for Christmas. I also love the nightmare sequence with the Watchamahoo toys. There’s so much fun dancing and big moments.”
Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas at Children’s Theatre Company is much more than just a holiday play— it brings families together. From the whimsical rhymes of Dr. Seuss to the heartwarming transformation of the Grinch, this production captures the magic of the season.
As Dean Holt, Reed Sigmund, and Brody Breen all reminded me in their interviews, the holidays are about more than gifts and decorations—they’re about community, kindness, and the memories we make with the people we love. Whether you’re watching the Grinch’s heart grow three sizes or singing along with the Whos, this production is sure to provide a joyful and unforgettable experience for all ages.
So, gather your family, grab your tickets, and head to the Children’s Theatre Company this holiday season. Whether it’s your first time seeing The Grinch or part of your family’s annual tradition, you’ll leave with a smile on your face—and perhaps a bigger heart, too.
A COMMITMENT TO GIVING BACK, SUSTAINABILITY, AND HOLISTIC CARE TRANSFORMING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND THE PLANET
Who doesn’t love a little self-care now and again? If you’re like me, the chances are that you totally do. But what if I told you that just down the road from Eagan, in Inver Grove Heights, there is a spa about more than just relaxation and wellness? It’s true. And OYESPA is where it's at. Behind its 300+ services—from massages to chiropractic care—this company is a bit different from the rest. Founded by Hitesh Soneji, OYESPA is a destination for healing and a business that cares deeply about making a difference in the world.
One of the most significant charitable partnerships OYESPA supports is with charitywater. org, an organization dedicated to providing clean, safe water and sanitation to people in developing countries. As we all know, water is a must for health, education, and economic stability, and by supporting this initiative, OYESPA is contributing to lasting change in underserved communities.
Throughout 2024, OYESPA raised funds to aid in this cause—$156 in August, $119 in July, and an impressive $1,425 by the end of June. The funds raised go directly to empowering millions through sustainable water access solutions.
Hitesh shared, “I’m in my third phase of life. Now is my time to do something for the community.” It’s what drives his approach to business. For him, OYESPA is not just about personal success; it’s about creating jobs, supporting local vendors, and being a force for good in the neighborhood.
its parent company, AUSZI GBC. After two years of rigorous efforts, OYESPA achieved this prestigious certification, which recognizes businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. With an overall B Impact Score of 81 (far above the median score for ordinary businesses), OYESPA continues to demonstrate its dedication to balancing profit with purpose.
“It’s not easy to attain this level,” Hitesh reflected, “but we’re very proud to have this designation now.” And it’s not a designation they plan to give up. It’s become a core principle in how they operate.
By partnering with Green Circle Salons, OYESPA has become part of a global movement of over 16,000 “Waste Warriors” who are focused on reducing the beauty industry’s environmental footprint. Through this program, OYESPA collects beauty waste—such as hair clippings, used foils, plastic, and paper—which is then repurposed into new products or clean energy. Even hair clippings find new life by helping clean up oil spills in the ocean.
Hitesh shared that earning a B Corporation certification was no small feat for OYESPA and
OYESPA’s sustainability efforts have also been recognized by the local community. The City of Inver Grove Heights awarded the spa a Sustainability Leadership certificate due to its dedication to eco-conscious practices. For Hitesh, it’s not just about following regulations but about setting a higher standard of environmental stewardship.
“We want to create opportunities for others,” Hitesh said. “As we create opportunities for others, we are creating opportunities for ourselves.”
OYESPA’s commitment to wellness extends beyond relaxation. The spa recently expanded its offerings to include chiropractic care, available seven days a week and even on-call at no extra charge. “If you are suffering, come in and see a doctor to find relief,” Hitesh encouraged. This holistic approach allows OYESPA to cater to the complete wellness needs of its clients, from physical to mental well-being.
“As we create opportunities for others, we are creating opportunities for ourselves.”
When I asked Histesh about his favorite service at OYESPA, he quickly mentioned the relaxation massages. “You can customize your massage experience with options like deep tissue or hot stones, but even our basic massage covers everything.” This attention to detail has made OYESPA a beloved destination for self-care in Inver Grove Heights.
OYESPA celebrated its fourth anniversary this past October, marking a milestone for the business and its impact on the local community. OYESPA has grown to be a place where clients can prioritize their health while also supporting a company that gives back to the world.
At its core, OYESPA is more than a spa—it’s a business rooted in the belief that wellness, sustainability, and community go hand in hand. Experience OYESPA for yourself by booking an appointment and knowing you’re doing good for the local community and the planet at large.
EMPOWERING LOCAL YOUTH THROUGH MENTORSHIP AND BUILDING LASTING RELATIONSHIPS
ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER
“Mentoring is a two-way street—kids teach us just as much as we teach them.”
We often think of the value that kids bring to our lives—their vivid imaginations, that sweet and innocent naivete, and the laughter. It’s infectious, really. But, it can be easy to overlook the value that we can bring to the children of the world—especially children that are not our own.
This is something Alicia Crudup knows quite a bit about. The executive director of Kids ‘n Kinship, Crudup took the reins of this Dakota County-based mentorship organization just over a year ago. With a deep background in non-profit work, she is passionate about helping others. Kids ‘n Kinship gave her the opportunity to return to her roots in youth development, and it’s a role that feels deeply personal to her.
“I’ve benefited from mentors throughout my life,” Crudup shared. “Those individuals, both formal and informal, shaped the person I’ve become. It’s a privilege to now be part of an organization that helps others build those kinds of relationships.”
Kids ‘n Kinship has a simple yet powerful mission: to pair children ages 5 to 16 with mentors in Dakota County. “We’re looking for everyday people,” Crudup said. “We’re not asking for perfection, just someone who can bring their whole self and show up consistently. The goal is to help kids view life from a broader perspective.”
The need for mentorship is especially critical for young boys, many of whom grow up in single-parent households. “We know that men are out there who can step up and offer guidance,” Crudup emphasized. “It’s not about doing anything complicated—sometimes it’s just about going to a game or shooting hoops at the park. That time together makes all the difference.”
One unique aspect of Kids ‘n Kinship is the personal connection it builds between mentors, mentees, and their families. “We visit homes and talk to families to make sure our program is the right fit,” Crudup explained. “We want the kids to want this support and for mentors to fully understand the role they’re taking on.”
The commitment Kids ‘n Kinship asks from mentors is pretty clear, and quite simple: four hours a month. “That’s all it takes,” Crudup said. “A few hours to open a child’s eyes to new experiences and offer guidance. It’s amazing how quickly both the kids and adults get hooked.”
Crudup also pointed out that mentors aren’t just individuals—they can be couples or entire families. “We’re flexible. We want people open to sharing their experiences with young people.”
The program currently has 27 boys waiting for male mentors, but volunteers are always needed, regardless of gender. “These mentor-mentee relationships often become lifelong bonds,” Crudup noted. “The kids grow up, and it comes full circle. The impact is incredible.”
Crudup has a clear message for those seeking volunteer opportunities: “Mentoring is simple, and it’s local. You can make a huge difference in a child’s life without having to look far.”
Mentorship, she adds, is a two-way street. “The kids teach the adults just as much as the adults teach them. It’s refreshing to see how much life these kids give back.”
Kids ‘n Kinship offers training and support to their mentors, and Crudup stresses that the experience is fun and rewarding. “It’s easy to make a change—right here in your own community.”
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
