“Where there is love, there is life.” —Gandhi

"Local love" refers to the act of supporting and celebrating the businesses, organizations, and people within a community. This practice strengthens social bonds, drives economic growth, and fosters a sense of belonging.

When individuals choose to shop, dine, or invest locally, they contribute directly to their community's economy. Local businesses are more likely to recirculate revenue back into the community through jobs, local suppliers, and taxes, creating a ripple effect that benefits everyone. Studies show that for every dollar spent at a local business, a significantly higher percentage stays within the community compared to spending at national chains or online retailers.

Beyond economic benefits, local love strengthens social connections. Supporting local businesses often means interacting with neighbors and building relationships with owners and employees. These interactions create a tight-knit community where people feel recognized and valued, fostering a sense of safety and trust. Events like farmers' markets, local festivals, or shop-local campaigns further encourage these connections and nurture pride in the community’s unique identity.

Local love also contributes to the preservation of culture and diversity. Small businesses and organizations often reflect the unique character, values, and traditions of a region. By supporting them, residents ensure that their community retains its distinct flavor and continues to offer diverse experiences for future generations.

In times of challenge, such as during natural disasters or economic downturns, communities with a strong foundation of local love often demonstrate greater resilience. This collective support enables communities to recover faster and emerge stronger.

Ultimately, local love is a simple yet impactful way to invest in a community’s success, making it a better place to live, work, and thrive.

25 YEARS AT THE COMMONS on Marice

A LEGACY OF EXCEPTIONAL SENIOR LIVING AND UNIQUE PROGRAMS IN EAGAN

ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CLINE & PROVIDED

As The Commons on Marice marks its 25th anniversary in 2025, this senior living community reflects on a quarter-century of providing compassionate care and innovative programs to the Eagan area. Established in 1999 and officially opening its doors in 2000, The Commons on Marice has built a reputation for creating a supportive and engaging environment for its residents.

“We are excited and grateful to celebrate 25 years,” says Kathy Quinby, director of sales and marketing. “It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re fortunate to have been part of so many lives during this time.” Based on her experiences caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, Kathy brings a unique empathy and understanding to her role at The Commons on Marice. She uses this insight to guide families through the often challenging process of finding the right senior living solution.

WHY SENIORS CHOOSE COMMUNITIES LIKE THE COMMONS ON MARICE

The decision to transition into senior living is deeply personal and often stems from a desire for greater support and connection. For some, it’s about leaving behind the burdens of home maintenance and embracing a lifestyle that prioritizes convenience and community. Others are simply lonely and looking for more social opportunities. Further, some may require additional care to manage health conditions or benefit from specialized memory care programs.

Today, an estimated 800,000 American adults live in assisted living communities. And approximately 6.9 million Americans age 65 or older live with the often-challenging effects of Alzheimer's dementia every day.

Families often turn to senior living communities like The Commons on Marice to provide their loved ones with the comfort of professional care, the reassurance of a supportive environment, and social engagement. Respite care can also offer short-term solutions for families needing temporary assistance. “We focus on providing a warm and caring environment where older adults can live their best lives,” shares Kathy.

A CONTINUUM OF CARE

The Commons on Marice offers a full spectrum of services, including independent living, assisted living, care suites, and memory care. With a licensed nurse onsite 24/7, the community provides peace of mind for residents and their families.

Memory care residents benefit from The Commons on Marice’s Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle® approach of care, which focuses on maintaining independence for as long as possible. “It’s about asking, ‘What can residents do for themselves? What do they enjoy doing?’” says David Luhring, executive director. “This approach helps our residents stay engaged and active.”

residents to sing, work on projects, and build relationships with their “grand friends.”   Residents, in turn, volunteer at the preschool, creating deep bonds that can last a lifetime.

These connections bring joy and purpose to residents’ lives while developing meaningful relationships across generations. The bonds formed during these visits create lasting memories and provide emotional enrichment for both the children and the seniors.

“It’s all about meeting families where they are and helping them find the right solutions.”
— Kathy Quinby

INTERGENERATIONAL CONNECTIONS

One of the most distinctive aspects of The Commons on Marice is its collaboration with the Intergenerational Learning Center next door. Children from the center visit memory care

Whether working on art projects or sharing stories, the interactions bring a sense of energy and fulfillment to everyone involved. Additionally, residents often share valuable life lessons with the children, who brighten their days with laughter and curiosity. It’s clear that these activities embody the spirit of community and mutual support that defines life at The Commons on Marice.

PROGRAMS THAT INSPIRE

The Commons on Marice offers programs tailored to meet residents’ diverse interests and needs. For individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, the Rock Steady Boxing program combines physical exercise with a supportive community. “We’ve seen incredible engagement in this program,” says Kathy. “Participants come in for a solid workout and leave feeling stronger, connected, and empowered.”

Life enrichment activities abound, from art and book clubs to faithbased gatherings and exercise classes. Residents also enjoy outings, such as theater performances and pontooning trips, that encourage exploration and adventure. The community’s partnerships with local organizations, including the Eagan Senior Center, Eagan Garden Club, Eagan Library, police department, and local Rotary, provide additional opportunities for growth and connection.

THE COMMONS ON MARICE OFFER A WELCOMING COMMUNITY

“What stands out about The Commons on Marice is the sense of belonging here,” Kathy shares. “Our residents are warm and welcoming people who have lived fascinating lives. Hearing their stories and seeing the camaraderie they build with one another is truly special.” The team member’s dedication is equally remarkable, creating an environment where seniors thrive.

Veterans living at The Commons on Marice have a unique opportunity to connect through monthly gatherings where they share experiences and memories. As a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization, the community takes pride in honoring their service and contributions through more programs that inspire.

LOOKING AHEAD

A commitment to innovation and quality care remains a focal point as The Commons on Marice moves into its next chapter. Guided by The Goodman Group’s decades of experience in senior living management, The Commons on Marice continues to evolve its offerings to meet the needs of today’s seniors.

“We’re always looking for ways to bring new opportunities and joy to our residents,” Kathy emphasizes. “It’s a privilege to be part of this community and to celebrate all we’ve achieved together over the past 25 years.”

How Lisa Lindner of Wigs by Opulence Creates Personalized Solutions for Hair Loss

ARTICLE BY ANN SCHREIBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CLINE

For over 25 years, Lisa Lindner has been in the beauty industry, perfecting her craft as a hairstylist. But her journey took quite a turn when she began specializing in wigs and hair toppers. As the owner of Wigs by Opulence Salon, Lisa focuses on providing hope for individuals experiencing hair loss. Her mission? To help clients regain their confidence and embrace their natural beauty with the perfect, customized wig.

Lisa’s path into wig design began when her career as a hair extension specialist led her to new challenges. "I started noticing a different type of hair loss among my clients," she shares. One key moment shaped the trajectory she would take: a client with inflamed scalp issues that made extensions impossible. “I told her we couldn’t continue with the extensions, and she was devastated. I realized then that I didn’t have the right solution for her.”

From that experience, Lisa began her research and discovered the gaps in the wig industry. While larger wig shops existed, few offered the personalization and expert care that clients with sensitive scalps and medical conditions needed. “Most shops don’t customize or color wigs the way I do. At my salon, we custom color each wig to create a more realistic look, tailoring it to match the client’s natural tones or preferences. I wanted to provide something better,” she explains.

Her salon now specializes in medical wigs designed for those undergoing treatments like chemotherapy or dealing with alopecia. These wigs feature softer caps for sensitive scalps, HD lace for a natural hairline, and low-density options for those unaccustomed to the volume of traditional wigs. “Low-density wigs are our best sellers because they look and feel more natural to someone experiencing hair loss,” Lisa says.

CREATING BREATHTAKING AND UPLIFTING TRANSFORMATIONS

Lisa’s work goes far beyond creating wigs—it’s about bettering lives. She recalls a client whose depression left her hair severely matted and unkempt. “Her husband called me, saying she needed help but was too ashamed to come in. When she arrived, she was in tears,” Lisa recounts. The client wanted to look her best for her son’s wedding, so Lisa gave her a fresh, short haircut and customized a wig that matched her personality. By the end of the appointment, the woman’s demeanor had completely shifted. “She started coming out of her shell, and I could see her confidence growing. That’s why I do this—it’s about making people feel like themselves again. From custom coloring to on-site alterations using our specialized sewing machine, every detail is personalized to create a perfect fit for each client.”

BREAKING DOWN STIGMAS

Despite her success, Lisa acknowledges the challenges of educating others about glueless wigs and medical hair loss solutions. “There’s still a negative stigma around wigs. People think they’re unnatural or only for costume wear,” she explains. So, she regularly visits clinics and drops off brochures to raise awareness. “I want doctors to know I’m here to help, but it’s been hard to get responses. Education is key to changing perceptions.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Starting January 1, 2025, Minnesota health insurance plans will cover up to $1,000 for glueless wigs. This groundbreaking initiative supports individuals experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions. Visit Wigs by Opulence Salon to explore your options for high-quality, customizable wigs designed for comfort and confidence.

“I see clients who don’t want to look in the mirror, but the right wig can change everything.”

The need for high-quality wigs is growing— 40% of women over 50 experience female pattern hair loss. Many also face emotional struggles tied to their appearance. “I hear from clients who don’t even want to look in the mirror or leave their homes. They’re not happy with how they look and don’t want to show themselves to anyone else. But once they put on a wig that feels right, their confidence skyrockets,” Lisa shares.

In Minnesota, a new law going into effect in January 2025 will provide up to $1,000 in insurance coverage for wigs for medical hair loss. Lisa sees this as a significant step forward but believes there’s still work to be done in connecting people with the right resources.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Lisa’s trademark low-density, glueless, human hair wigs are designed with love to meet the unique needs of her clients. "The synthetic market is oversaturated," she explains. "My business focuses on realistic, human hair wigs that look and feel like the real thing."

Her commitment to quality and customization is what makes Wigs by Opulence different from the competition. Lisa’s work isn’t just about wigs; it’s about creating a space for clients to be supported, seen, and understood. “My assistant, Andrea—who handles most of our consultations and is a huge part of my business—always says it’s unusual for someone like me to build an entire career around wigs.

“Most people in this industry get into it because of their own experience with hair loss. But for me, it’s not about personal need; it’s about compassion for my guests and fulfilling a real need in their lives. I love being able to give them confidence and help them feel like themselves again.”

A Welcoming Space for All Ages to Explore Art in Eagan

Creativity at Eagan Art House

Have you ever driven down Lexington Ave. in Eagan only to see a small building on the east side of the road, signage calling out “Eagan Art House?” If you’re like me, you’ve seen it and wondered about it. But you may not have taken the time to pull over to step inside to see what this artist’s destination is all about. After this article, you may do things differently next time.

A RICH HISTORY OF ARTS EDUCATION

The Eagan Art House’s journey from a nonprofit to a city-supported initiative has allowed it to grow substantially over the years. Recreation Program Supervisor Julie Andersen's mission has always been making art accessible and encouraging people to learn, grow, and connect with others. This goal has only strengthened with time. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Art House remained open for pottery students, allowing a few individuals at a time to work on their projects. “It provided a peaceful retreat for our community when people needed it most,” Andersen recalls.

As pandemic restrictions lifted, new programs were designed—art camps, after-school activities, and events like the annual fall art sale joined their roster. With the steady support of the City of Eagan, the Art House continues to thrive and adapt, offering a range of creative outlets like painting, pottery, parent-child activities, and summer camps.

CONTINUED

The Eagan Art House has been a haven for creativity and learning in Eagan since 1997. Originally founded as the Dakota Center for the Arts, it began as a small nonprofit offering art classes for children and pottery workshops for adults. Over time, the Art House joined forces with Eagan Parks & Recreation and has become an integral part of the city’s recreational offerings.

Today, it remains dedicated to visual art education, with programs designed for all ages and skill levels.

ART BLOCK AND BEYOND

One of the Art House’s flagship events, Eagan Art Block, is a two-week celebration of creativity held every September. Spanning the square mile around the Art House, this event partners with local landmarks like Caponi Art Park , Eagan Art Festival , and Wescott Library to create a community-focused arts experience. Art Block is about celebrating local talent and inspiring creativity, from a film festival hosted by Eagan TV to performances and interactive exhibits.

Andersen works tirelessly to coordinate this event, leading a team of over 20 staff members, including support staff and teaching artists. Tanya Mozingo, Superintendent of Recreation for Eagan Parks & Recreation and Andersen’s supervisor, says, “I love the sense of community. I love hearing people say, ‘I’m not an artist,’ and then watching them discover they can create something meaningful. It’s about finding a new way to express themselves and leave feeling connected to the community.”

BUILDING CONNECTIONS AND MEMORIES

Both Mozingo and Andersen shared that art at the Eagan Art House is about more than just technique. Many participants come seeking connection, and that’s precisely what they find. Julie notes, “I’ve seen children show their new talents to their parents, who respond with pride and amazement. We meet people where they are, whether it’s their skill level or their interest. It’s great to see how these interactions develop into life-long friendships.”

Mozingo recalls taking a class with her daughter last fall, making ornaments together. “My daughter made a pumpkin, and it was so fun to pull it out this year for seasonal decorations,” she says with a smile. Classes are designed to be accessible, open to residents and non-residents alike, with options for those on a budget. Many courses welcome beginners and require no prior experience, making them an inviting choice for anyone interested in joining.

As Andersen explains, “There is so much you can learn online, but hands-on experience with other people and a skilled artist brings a different level of depth that can’t be replicated.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

With excitement building, the Eagan Art House is set to open a new facility in the spring of 2025. This 10,000-square-foot, ADA-accessible building will be the first fossil-fuel-free structure in Eagan, built with sustainable features to support the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship. “We are thrilled to invite the community into this new space, which will be open seven days a week,” Mozingo shares.

To stay updated on class offerings and events, follow Eagan Art House on social media at @eaganarthouse or visit their new website, eaganarthouse.org. For anyone looking to explore their creative side, the Eagan Art House offers an enriching and welcoming experience—a true celebration of art, connection, and community.

Payment is processed ahead of each delivery, making it super easy and affordable for the gift-giver.

Fixing

supporting animals, capturing smiles, changing lives

Since 2013, Steffany Fleming has been bringing a unique touch to events across Eagan and beyond through her Mobile Memories Traveling Photo Booth. Combining her love of photography and event planning, Steffany has turned a creative vision into a successful business that not only delivers fun and memorable experiences but also fuels her passion for animal rescue through her non-profit organization, Inspire & Flourish.

A VISION BORN FROM PASSION

Steffany describes herself as “just a big kid” at heart, and her journey into the photo booth business reflects just that. A longtime party planner, scrapbooker, and photography enthusiast, she was inspired after seeing a photo booth in action. Wanting to add her own twist, she flew to Tennessee to learn more from a photo booth expert and returned home determined to create something different.

Rather than opting for the large, cumbersome photo booths that were popular then, Steffany invested in an open-air concept—an elegant standalone box paired with customizable backdrops. Over the years, her collection of backdrops has grown to over 20, many handcrafted to fit the creative themes of her clients’ events.

From weddings to birthdays, Mobile Memories offers props and personalized photo strips that guests can take home as keepsakes. “People love those photo strips,” says Steffany, who’s also known as the “prop queen.” “They’re fun, and they end up on refrigerators or in home offices as reminders of a great time.”

FROM FUN TO FULFILLMENT

Mobile Memories isn’t just about capturing moments—it’s also about creating opportunities to give back. Steffany uses the proceeds from her photo booth business to support Inspire & Flourish, a volunteer-based organization she founded to aid animal rescues locally and globally.

How a Local Photo Booth Fuels Global Animal Rescue Efforts

“I’ve been involved in animal rescue for as long as I’ve been in the photo business,” Steffany shares. Through Inspire & Flourish, she coordinates spay and neuter clinics, organizes food and supply donations, and arranges animal transports to foster homes. “Most rescues are foster-based, and the cost of care can really add up. I’m here to support their mission and help these animals find good homes.”

Last October, Inspire & Flourish sponsored clinics that provided spay and neuter services for 137 cats and dogs. “Not everyone can afford these procedures,” she explains, “so we step in to make them accessible.” The organization also partners with animal lovers to assist with veterinary care for special needs cases and delivers supplies to foster families caring for rescues.

THE HEART BEHIND THE BUSINESS

For Steffany, Mobile Memories is more than a job—it’s a means to sustain the causes closest to her heart. “When I book a gig, I know I’m going to be able to help more animals,” she says. “It’s the perfect combination of what I love to do: provide fun experiences for my clients and support rescue work.”

Looking ahead, Mobile Memories will sponsor its largest fundraiser on March 8, an event that promises to expand the impact of Inspire & Flourish further. Be sure to watch for more information at https://mobilememoriesphotobooths.com/ and https://inspireandflourish.org/

Whether helping guests celebrate milestones or giving animals a second chance, Steffany proves you can combine passion and purpose to leave a lasting imprint on the community.
