HONORING PRESIDENT CARTER'S CONTRIBUTIONS AND LENDING A HAND TO AFFORDABLE MORTGAGES IN OUR COMMUNITIES

A HABITAT FOR ALL

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit well known for its work in communities across Georgia and the nation. One couple helped propel the organization across the globe – Former President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. Inspiring millions over the last three decades, the former president and his wife, Mrs. Carter, worked alongside more than 104,000 volunteers across

and Paulding counties built a President Carter Memorial Door and Frame project at the Habitat Smyrna ReStore and allowed the public to sign and leave personal messages of gratitude. “Raising a frame with a door symbolizes the many doors of opportunity that President Carter helped make possible through his life of service to others,” says Jessica Gill, CEO, Habitat NWMA. “He dedicated

the U.S. and in 14 countries to build, renovate and repair more than 4,000 homes. In Cobb County, Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta (Habitat NWMA) spent the beginning of 2025 honoring the life and service of the former president. President Carter spoke often about the work of Habitat and his faith. He said, “Habitat gives us an opportunity which is very difficult to find: to reach out and work side by side with those who never have had a decent home-but work with them on a completely equal basis. It's not a bigshot, little-shot relationship. It's a sense of equality.” He also said, "I haven’t been on a Habitat project that I wasn’t thrilled and inspired and wept.”  The affiliate which covers Cobb, Douglas

his long life to opening doors for others through affordable homeownership.” Habitat’s mission statement is “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.” In Cobb County, Habitat NWMA annually partners with coalitions like the Cobb High School Coalition, Cobb Interfaith Coalition, Lutheran Coalition and Catholics4Habitat; municipal partners like the City of Marietta and City of Austell; specialty builds like Veterans Builds and the upcoming Women Build in May; as well as many dedicated corporate sponsors such as The Atlanta Braves Foundation, Home Depot, Genuine Parts, Publix, Assurant, Berkadia, and more.

“THE WORK IS ALL WORTH IT WHEN I SEE HOW HAPPY AND APPRECIATIVE THEY ARE AT THEIR HOME DEDICATIONS.”

In 2024, the affiliate had two “Legacy Builds”— the Terwilliger Family, who built for a Veteran; and the Kenney Family, who sponsored a full house to honor the family’s late wife and mother who loved Habitat. Her legacy lives on through a firm foundation for one family’s future with a zero-interest mortgage in a safe environment. In 2024, local volunteers logged nearly 2,000 hours working alongside homeowners to build their homes. Longtime volunteer crew leader Susan Chang loves sharing the journey to becoming a homeowner with families. “I love this organization and the way it helps the deserving families,” she says. “The work is all worth it when I see how happy and appreciative they are at their home dedications.”  Recent homeowners in Cobb include teachers, a school bus driver, school cafeteria manager, City of Austell Police Department employees and City of Marietta employees. Partnerships like the City of Marietta Public Service program allow public servants to afford to live in the community they serve. “Living where you work is a key component in building community,” says Jessica Gill, CEO, Habitat NWMA. “Many of our teachers, city employees and first responders cannot afford the escalating prices of our local housing.” There are many ways to volunteer, donate, and sponsor a Habitat home. RENOVATED DREAMS

Tony and Denise transformed their dream home into reality. Now, it’s your turn.

In 2003, with nothing but a dream, Tony and Denise Brown started cutting granite, launching their first business and the first Kitchen Designs Group in East Cobb. In the time since, their corporation has grown, now averaging about 80 employees to assist in executing their four different trades with locations in Nashville, TN; Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; as well as Panama City and Santa Rosa, FL. Despite their growth, they remain a family-owned business, with four of their children heavily involved. As a result, it only makes sense that the two would utilize their skills and experience to create the home of their dreams.

After moving to Florida in 2017, the couple added seven houses to their portfolio, renovating them in a manner only they know how. “Denise did what she does best. People would come in and buy everything,” Tony said. “But this home was a labor of love.”   The home to which he is referring was a project gone right. Abandoned for five years in a Santa Rosa neighborhood, the couple’s real estate agent begged them to undertake the challenge. It sat in CONTINUED >

unlivable conditions, and she said the couple were the only ones who could redo it and turn it into something spectacular. “We prayed about it,” Denise said. “And everything just fell into place.”   Having been in the industry for so long, the two decided to have some fun with it, doing things out of the ordinary and taking it as far as they could with their imagination. “Every home purchased and remodeled was all about the resale,” Denise confessed. “I really wanted this one to be over the top and one that I loved.” They redid every square foot of the house from the inside out. “It was out of our wheelhouse, which is why we took it on,” they said. What they didn’t expect was to fall in love with the house and ultimately make it their dream home.

“It’s definitely a little piece of paradise,” Tony admitted. “We also have a home in East Cobb built in the ’60s. It’s like night and day when we go between each home." In regard to their Florida home, the focal point is the marble in the kitchen. Composed of a rare Calacatta marble straight from Italy, the two were able to acquire the slabs needed for the kitchen and opted to continue with that type of design throughout the rest of the home.   With her interior design background enabling her to sense what a home needs to be, Denise loves and values the differences in each style incorporated in the homes they have undertaken throughout the years. That being said, while her personal favorite is a traditional, classic design with touches of other styles, the

IF YOU THINK WINEMAKERS ARE OBSESSIVE ABOUT

house that became their dream home “is very Spanish, very Mediterranean, very different than anything tackled before,” Denise said.

In the same manner, Denise and Tony aim to do for their clients what they did for themselves. “We want people to fall back in love with their homes, to be happy in the space they spend so much time in with their families,” Denise said. Agreeing, Tony added, “We want it to be night and day in a remodel because you won’t appreciate the difference otherwise.”

Subsequently, twenty years after their establishment, Denise and Tony are thrilled to open their own showroom, a 30,000-square-foot facility in Marietta. “We’ve always worked in showrooms, but we couldn’t really do everything we wanted to do,” Tony confessed. “In this one, we will be showing things people have never seen. We want to make it more of an experience instead of just going to get countertops and cabinets.”

THRIVER AND SURVIVOR

LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST GEORGIA OVARIAN CANCER

“UNTIL THERE IS A TEST, WE WILL NOT REST!”

Sharon Sigler, an East Cobb resident, is a 33-year ovarian cancer “Thriver and Survivor”, who has served as a member of the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance Board of Directors since 2015. Sharon was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October 1992. She discovered the diagnosis when, unbeknownst to her, a tumor the size of a grapefruit hemorrhaged internally during her drive to work. Emergency surgery followed.

Sharon is passionate about advocating for awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Thirty-four years ago, when she faced her diagnosis, there was no screening test for ovarian cancer; there is still no screening test today. She continues

to advocate tirelessly, stating, unequivocally, “Until there is a test, we will not rest!” Ovarian cancer occurs in 1 in 87 women and is the deadliest of the gynecological cancers. It is the fifth leading cause of death among women. The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) organizes impactful events to raise awareness, support survivors, and fund educational initiatives in the fight against ovarian cancer. Since the beginning, GOCA has transformed from an idea hatched at a founders dining room table to a very strong, community-based non-profit organization led by those touched by ovarian cancer in some way. The annual Teal Trot 5K and the Teal

Heal Fashion Show celebrates survivors, remembers those who have passed from the disease and unites families, friends, and advocates, as well as raises awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.

GOCA’s flagship fundraiser, the  Shaken, Not Stirred Gala , now in its 13th year, is scheduled for March 8th at the Georgia Aquarium. This elegant fundraising evening features The Celebrity All Star Band, DJ Angelo Ferraro, incredible silent and live auctions, and, most importantly, moving survivor stories offering insight into their personal ovarian cancer journey. Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) –Atlanta Chapter, in celebration of its tenth anniversary of partnership with GOCA, will curate an exceptional menu in honor of Dame Barbara Petit, showcasing their generosity and commitment to the cause.

In addition to these signature events, GOCA hosts a variety of outreach programs, survivor luncheons, and educational events. These include health fairs, corporate seminars, and community initiatives designed to spread awareness of ovarian cancer’s signs and symptoms, leading to earlier detection and better outcomes. Participants are empowered to take action, share their knowledge, and support the organization’s mission of saving lives and improving the quality of life for women affected by this disease.

Through generous partnerships, GOCA continues to make a meaningful impact across Georgia, championing awareness and providing vital resources for these courageous women.

Atlanta Bed Swings

To say that Atlanta Bed Swings is a unique company is an understatement in more ways than one. In fact, the idea for the company came out of necessity. When tragedy struck with a house fire in 2012, The Tice Family became homeless for a time. It was then, from an 800 square-foot home set in the woods, that the family launched Atlanta Bed Swings in an effort to start over with dreams of a new home. “Creating a living for our family to meet basic needs launched our company that is now a fabulous business as well as a true luxury product”, says Erin Tice.

Atlanta Bed Swings became a family affair with Mike and Erin’s son, Tyler taking care of website development, as well as attending sales appointments with Mike. Their youngest son, Jacob also became an installer and has installed over 500 bed swings in the Southeast. Likewise, their son Michael worked as the lead painter for three years, completing over 900 orders.

Innovation is at the forefront of Atlanta Bed Swings with the invention of their Never Stretch Rope. Erin reveals, “Traditional bed swings hung with thick manila ropes stretch six to nine inches in the first year. They also have to be replaced every four to seven years for integrity. Ropes on a bed swing need to be re-leveled rather often as well. Our Never Stretch Rope is created with a stainless steel addition, so homeowners keep the look and texture without the maintenance.”

Look out for the much anticipated re-opening of their Virtual Showroom in 2025. Here, a customer can enter an unmanned space with a door code, speak to a virtual representative and complete their order. There are also two new frame styles that launched in February, so look out for those new additions. Make sure you visit Atlanta Bed Swings at the Westside Market in Roswell and view all of their exciting designs and products.

Arbor Hills Construction

The exterior of your home can communicate volumes about you and keeping it looking on point can be rather daunting. When seasons change from summer to winter, much can be revealed about what your beautiful landscape might be hiding. You might start to see cracks in hardscapes or breakage in your driveway. Similarly, you may even get an epiphany of a new patio or paver walkway. Whatever the case may be, Arbor Hills Construction has the experience and proven reliability that we all search for when taking on a home project.

Sidewalk cracks, discolored driveways and deteriorating patio decks tend to be overlooked when keeping the home pristine. You may not realize just how much these tiny flaws affect the appearance and durability of your home until you’ve addressed them. In fact, industry experts estimate that installing or redoing the driveway alone can increase property value by 5 to 10%. That, along with greater curb appeal and safer outdoor surfaces, is enough to consider adding new concrete to your list of home renovations.

Thirty years in the concrete and hardscapes business has given Arbor Hills Construction the experience that customers seek. Hundreds of satisfied clients have joined the masses praising the design, execution and follow-up that Arbor Hills Construction practices, which can be lacking in today’s contracting environments. By specializing in laying concrete for driveways, walkways, retaining walls, patios and pool decks, they are able to hone their craft to give you the best possible outcome. Additionally, they are also experts in the stamped and colored concrete requests that higher end homeowners may desire. With a dedication to their customers and the ability to accommodate specialized needs without compromising quality, they’re a top choice in Marietta - East Cobb.

With “satisfaction guaranteed” being their credo, Arbor Hills Construction proudly states. “We will work with you to meet deadlines and coordinate with other related projects. We will maintain open communication with you to keep you up to date on the status of your job. We do this to guarantee that the project is completed according to your preferences.”

Residents (especially those inside city limits) may need to obtain permits before laying concrete or installing retaining walls. This process can take several weeks, so it’s best to start the planning process now and prepare to have your new driveway, patio or walkway installed as soon as possible. So, get ready for those summer parties on the updated patio or that inviting driveway to park your new car. Arbor Hills Construction is your partner in keeping your largest investment immaculate and welcoming.

Celebrating a Servant Leader

Remembering Joe Gavalis

Joe Gavalis had a unique way of uplifting and encouraging friends, neighbors, and coworkers. He would often greet them as if he were announcing their presence at an esteemed gathering. In a clear cheerful tone he would say “the honorable” and insert their name and title. It was his way of making everyone feel important and special.

Joe passed away quietly in January 2025, leaving behind a distinguished legacy of dedicated servant leadership, patriotism and laudable good citizenship. In his professional career, he served as a relentless federal agent, fighting organized crime and labor racketeering. He fearlessly crossed swords with dangerous mobsters and corrupt labor bosses, always with the intent of protecting masses of workers who were striving to make a living for their families.

In 1998, Joe retired from federal law enforcement, he and his wife Susan began to build a new life of service in East Cobb County Georgia. Joe soon began serving his many friends and neighbors in the East Cobb community by stepping up to the often-thankless role of homeowner’s association leader and president. He fielded calls and visits from neighbors night and day, listened carefully to everyone’s concerns and issues and worked to lift their spirits. He was a man of action who understood local government and

diplomatically helped his neighbors navigate bureaucracies. Joe became popular as a consummate peacemaker and problem solver, and when appropriate, just a good non-judgmental listener. He was everyone’s friend and good neighbor, beloved and fondly remembered in his community.

With extraordinary drive and energy, Joe volunteered in various capacities with Cobb County government. He was eventually appointed to the Cobb Neighborhood Safety Commission where he became a founding member of the Cobb County Elder Abuse Task Force. He saw the tremendous need to better protect senior citizens from elder abuse and brought together state, county and city officials, and legislators to develop heart-felt solutions. Meanwhile, he worked with police and human social service agencies to raise public awareness to the horrors of physical, institutional and financial abuse of the elderly. Fighting elder abuse was not a very glamorous ambition, but Joe had a big heart and true passion for combatting all forms of exploitation of the elderly.

Always striving to do more to protect the elderly population, Joe formed the North Georgia Elder Abuse Task Force to combat elder abuse throughout the expansive North Georgia Region. In that capacity he travelled the state to meet and work with numerous local law enforcement groups to unite them with their federal counterparts, inform them about growing trends in scams against the elderly and help with local issues and problems. For over 10 years, Joe personally conducted elder abuse prevention workshops for approximately 10,000 elderly individuals.  He liked distributing free scent kits; which are low-tech, but effective devices used to help police canines locate dementia sufferers who wandered away from home before they suffered harm.

Using his commanding voice, but gentile nature, Joe was never shy about enlisting the help of very busy, often over-worked law enforcement and criminal justice officials, as well as human service professionals.  He was subtly demanding, but always a gentleman while urging them to make time and fight for the right things for the right reasons. Eventually, they would all come to feel good about their sacrifices and the time they spent on the cause of better protecting Georgia’s senior citizens.

Georgia is a better place because of the compassion, love and dedication of Joe Gavalis. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of thousands of lives he touched. He made them all better people, better guardians of the elderly and better Americans.

The lesson we can all take from the life of Joe Gavalis is to listen to our inner voices and pursue what they tell us. If we do so, we will enjoy better, more satisfying lives, as Joe did. Georgia is a better place because of Joe Gavalis, servant leader.

TURN YOUR TRAVELS INTO A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Packing Comfort

No matter where your travels take you, these tips can help you.

Whether traveling for business or pleasure, for a short or long period of time, by yourself or with someone else, missing home is inevitable. Even travel enthusiasts get homesick sometimes! The sights might be beautiful, and the hotel bed duvet might be soft, but there’s just something about home that brings a level of incomparable comfort. So, how do you bring that comfort with you on your next trip?

Everyone has that one item—whether it’s a blanket that’s cozy beyond belief or a pillow that has been perfectly fluffed from years of use—that never fails to ensure a good night’s rest. Bring it with you! Toss it in your suitcase or throw it in your carry-on so you have it when you get to the hotel or during your redeye flight. Or, if there’s a specific fabric that brings you sensory joy, such as a satin pillowcase, pack that instead and slip it on your pillow when you arrive.

Something else to pack to ensure a good night’s rest, even in an unfamiliar location, is your go-to sleep aid. Whether it’s a weighted sleep mask, an essential oil diffuser, or a white noise machine, make room in your luggage so you can transform your hotel room into a cozy version of your bedroom. After a restful night, for those who can’t function without caffeine in the morning, don’t forget to pack your favorite coffee or tea and a cherished mug to maintain your morning routine, even while traveling.

For overpackers, it’s not always practical to bring more than clothes, a toothbrush, and the bare necessities. But

fear not! There are still plenty of ways to ensure the comfort of home follows you to your next destination.

Technology is a wonderful thing, so use it! Download your favorite books, movies, or podcasts before you leave to enjoy during the plane ride, downtime, or whenever you like. With your favorites keeping you company, it’s almost impossible to dwell on your surroundings.

Also, especially if you’re traveling alone, schedule FaceTime or phone calls with your loved ones to maintain that sense of connection. This helps you feel part of their lives—and them a part of yours—even while away. If time zones make communication tricky, bring a journal to jot down your travel stories so you can share them later. Journaling keeps you grounded while ensuring you won’t forget any crazy experiences to recount to your loved ones.

Finally, meet new people, keep busy and seek your favorite foods! The busier you are the less time you have to dwell on missing home. Plan activities you're excited about and be intentional around engaging with locals, join tour groups or attend community happenings. Be sure to include on your itinerary visits to restaurants or pubs where you can find familiar foods, which can bring comfort.

No matter where your travels take you, these tips can help you bring the comfort of home along for the journey. What are your go-to tricks for feeling at home while away?

INDULGENCE AND ADVENTURE

a Car Ride Away

Curate treasured memories at these savored southern getaways.

The Rhett House bedroom

Whether it’s a grand historic Inn in the South Carolina low country, a storied Old Florida Inn, a charming North Georgia bed and breakfast, or an elegant Tennessee farm-turned-resort in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, exceptional experiences await. With your best road trip playlist cued, hop in the car beside your travel buddy to experience the utmost southern charm and hospitality.

The first getaway is just a four-and-a-halfhour drive from Atlanta. Refuel your soul at The Rhett House Inn, a historic, family-run “grand dame” built in 1820 and set in the picturesque town of Beaufort, SC. The vibrant Lowcountry town offers shopping, galleries, museums, fine dining, fishing, boating, music, theater, and more.

The inn is a living testament to Beaufort's history, blending antebellum charm with contemporary elegance. It features luxurious rooms that offer both historic character and modern comforts—complimentary gourmet breakfast, evening refreshments, and courtyard and garden spaces for relaxation will bookend your adventure-filled days. The helpful staff at The Rhett House Inn can help you arrange historical tours and boat trips or a visit to the Pat Conroy Literary Center. If you’d prefer to set your own leisurely pace, you  can stroll the quaint streets lined with Spanish Moss-covered grand oaks and drive the short distance to walk the beaches of nearby Hunting Island.

The second of our recommendations for a unique and historic getaway will not disappoint. Along the Forgotten Coast of Florida, about five and a half hours south of Atlanta, the region's rich history shines through the impressive renovation at The Gibson Inn. Dating back to 1907, the luxury boutique hotel lies at the heart of the easy-going Old Florida town of Apalachicola. The Inn’s history of grand style is carried forward with hand-laid marble bathrooms, hardwood floors, elaborate crown molding, and carefully embellished guest suites. After a visit to the hotel dining room, hotel parlor, sweeping wraparound porches, and nostalgic parlor bar full of locals and travelers alike, hop on a hotel golf cart to peruse the town. A pleasing array of shops, seafood eateries, and live entertainment abounds. All are just minutes away from the beaches of St George Island.

Our third destination is a more economical but still refined getaway. The rustic elegance of Glen-Ella Springs Inn and Restaurant in the North Georgia mountains has enchanted visitors since the late nineteenth century. Only 90 miles from Atlanta, area attractions include wineries, hiking trails, and waterfalls. The peaceful Inn boasts

original heart pine floors, in-room fireplaces, and an excellent restaurant, all overlooking a twelve-acre meadow and garden. The friendly folks at Glen-Ella can enhance your stay with bottles of wine, fresh-cut flowers, chilled champagne, and even an in-room, full-body massage. If you and your travel buddy are adventurous, a local zip-line tour, trail ride, and ATV tour are also available.

And finally, about three and a half hours north of Atlanta, near Knoxville, Tennessee, awaits Blackberry Farm. Renowned for its award-winning restaurants, hospitality, and countless activities and adventures, you will be inspired to relax, explore, learn, taste, and enjoy. Starting as a six-room inn, the Beall family expanded Blackberry Farm to create many historic rooms, suites, cottages, and houses for your stay. A farmstead tour, spa offerings, wine bunker tour, sporting clays, fly fishing, golf, and hiking are just some of the many activities offered. Book a Wine and Whiskey tasting, a cooking demonstration, or a hot stone massage, and then afterward, relax by the fire until it’s time for a delectable dinner. Exemplifying the utmost in Southern hospitality, the staff goes above and beyond to ensure your stay is memorable and enjoyable.

Whether you are bundled up and cozy for a unique mountain stay or footloose and fancy-free near the beach, there is something on this list for every adventure seeker to enjoy. Each venue emphasizes that you can choose the perfect trip based on unique accommodations and excursion offerings. Along with its proximity to Atlanta, each inn or resort was chosen for its grand history, high marks for visitor experience, and charm and character. So, pack up, gas up, crank up the tunes and enjoy the ride!
