Eden Prairie – The Land of Good and Plenty
Andrew Stavast | Andrew.Stavast@LifestylePubs.com
Welcome to the Premier issue of Eden Prairie Lifestyle. I am so proud to put forth a beautiful magazine exclusively (although you are welcome to share it with non-EP folks too) for Eden Prairie. My family and I have been residents for about 24 years now. Having moved from Southwest Minneapolis to the suburbs was new ground for us. Bigger yards, bigger houses and so much beautiful green space. This premier issue is themed “The land of good and plenty” because that is how I’ve lived and loved Eden Prairie all these years. You can mention Eden Prairie just about anywhere in the country and people know something about us. This land of good and plenty has been named one of the best communities to live, work and grow a family in the country. There’s a reason for this – it’s the Good People of Eden Prairie and the Plenty of Opportunity this community has.

HIGHWAY 52 TO SOME EASY FUN! ARTICLE MARY ABELN
L
ooking for an idea that is special and easy to execute? Look no further than the Road Trip to Rochester Minnesota. Take an easy ride down the iconic Highway 52 through the beautiful rolling farm land between the Twin Cities and Rochester. Here’s how to Eat, Play and Love your way to Rochester. Leave the Cities around 1:00 in the afternoon, turn on some good tunes and hit Highway 52 South to The House of Coates located off exit #46. (Be looking as it can be easy to miss.) Take the exit loop around and over the bridge and then go left onto the frontage road. You’ve probably passed the cute little roadside spot many times and wondered what’s up with The House of Coates? Inside you’ll find a newly remodeled rustic Bar & Grill. Order up the Swiss Mushroom Burger (our personal favorite) and a cool beverage – relax and enjoy. Step up to the Pull Tab counter - have a chat with Patty and pull a few tabs. You never know you may get lucky. When you’ve had your fill get back on to Highway 52 South and glide into Rochester. Arrive at Double Tree by Hilton located at 150 S. Broadway in the heart of Rochester, give the Valet your car keys and check-in. You will be welcomed into one stunning lobby surrounded by art and a moving wall of color. Settle into your room freshen up and get ready to enjoy an easy evening. Start with a glass of wine or a cocktail from the amazing wine selection at Pescara (happy hour is 3-6 and 9-11) located in the lobby opposite the hotel desk. It’s the go-to place for the finest sea food and fish, small plates, patio – all that is delicious. If you prefer fine dining Italian head down the street to Terza Ristorante and enjoy the delectable Italian dishes from Chef Miguel Santana in the Tuscan designed space that will surely capture your palate and heart in one fell swoop.
But wait, there is one more place before you retire to that comfy room. You must go upstairs in the same building as Terza to the roof-top La Vetta Bar Nel Cielo for an amazing 280 degree view of Rochester. The space is gorgeous and perfect for romance or partying with friends. Get cozy between the sheets back at Doubletree by Hilton – you should be relaxed and ready for bed after the day you just had! In the morning you can order room service and take your time getting up then I suggest going across the street to Chester's Kitchen & Bar for an amazing brunch to enjoy a Mimosa or Bloody’s and really good coffee. From there getting home is easy. Your biggest decision will be on dinner – Pescara or Terza Ristorante? You cannot go wrong with either choice. The wonderful staff at Doubletree by Hilton will be happy to give you directions where you want to go and the nice part is – no car! From the hotel you can easily walk to these Rochester gems. When you go – let us know how your time was, what was your favorite and did you find something new to share? Send us pictures, tag us on Facebook and we’ll find a gift to send you. PLANE TALK
When flying private makes dollars and cents count for you, your family and your high value executives BRETT BLOCKER
16
Eden Prairie Lifestyle | September 2016
I
t’s only nine in the morning, but out on the tarmac of Flying Cloud Airport the mercury is fast approaching ninety degrees. Heat waves shimmer over a Lear Jet waiting for passengers to arrive. I’m informed that the aircraft’s air conditioning unit can cool cabin conditions to temperatures conducive to comfortable levels. “It might be a while before they fly. That’s why we keep ours in here,” says Rich Dalquist, president and pilot CEO of Plane Solutions, a private aviation management, sales and consulting organization. He’s referring to the shaded hangar behind us. In there, the planes shimmer for a different reason: they’re spotless.
“Our motto is ‘service, service, service and along the way, strive for perfection.’ he says. It’s what makes us different.” And it shows. With services ranging from turn-key aircraft and outsourced flight department management, to aircraft acquisition, charter brokerage and bespoke service right down to the style of chocolate served during in-flight catering, Plane Solutions’
accommodations know no bounds when it comes to attending to each specific requirement of their clients.
“If you need to be in Philadelphia by lunch, and back in time for your child’s soccer game in evening, we’ll make that happen – and do every day!” Dalquist relates the use of a private jet in a unique way.
“A private jet is expensive when compared to buying an airline ticket, but flying the airlines is akin to taking the city bus. For high value executives with a full plate, living on a city bus schedule is unthinkable!” For those seeking to trade the snail’s pace of commercial air for the maximized efficiency of private transit, Plane Solutions are the go-to guys, and they work like this: When a company needs to expedite employee travel, they purchase private aircraft. But with the struggles of maintenance, finding qualified pilots and crew, and keeping within finicky FAA regulations, CONTINUED >

PLANE TALK (CON TI N U ED)
it becomes apparent that owning and operating the aircraft is a full-time job in itself. As a result, they decide to outsource their flight operation. This is where Plane Solutions comes in. And as Dalquist puts it, Plane Solutions “does it all.” Where they are truly unique is that Plane Solutions is fully aligned with their clients’ interests as a fiduciary, not as a vendor.
“We are fierce defenders of our clients’ privacy, safety and pocketbook” says Dalquist. “We’re the guys behind the scenes. While you’re in the air with our pilots, our ground crew is on the phone making sure your driver is onsite, waiting for you and has directions to your hotel.” With an extensive background in logistics management and over thirty years’ flight experience, few are more qualified than Dalquist (and his hand-picked crew of pilots and client managers) to handle the intricacies of a precisely coordinated commute. His office: a miniature control tower complete with real-time flight data projected onto computer screens. His desk: a diagnostic nerve center. Here, Dalquist puts his experience to use by inspecting each and every maintenance invoice from parts suppliers. “Airplanes need constant maintenance.” he says, gesturing to the stack of invoices. “Safety is our number one priority. We operate within a strict operating philosophy and use more conservative safety protocols than industry standard.” 18
Eden Prairie Lifestyle | September 2016
By acting as their clients’ agent, Dalquist oversees all purchase transactions from vendors, preventing overcharging and waste. “Every bill sees my red pen” says Dalquist. Of course, with their wide array of specialized amenities, a partnership with Plane Solutions is not free According to Dalquist, their fee for service is “often close to a net zero due to our efficiencies and purchasing power”. This is a highly trained team of seasoned experts and once retained for service, provide a strong advocacy for the client’s interests. The efficiency and potential for growth inherent in their partnership makes them an indispensable resource that pays for itself. With pilots at the ready on a moment’s notice, the freedom provided by Plane Solutions allows a company to multiply output by dispatching top performing salespeople, “rainmakers” you might say, to three to four nationwide meetings per day. Flight delays permitting, commercial might allow for one or two under even the best conditions. Then there’s the added benefit of minimizing employee burnout. “You don’t want to make your employees into road warriors”, warns Dalquist. “An overworked employee is an ineffective employee. If you can get your team to their destination in good time and good comfort, you’re creating a win-win-win situation. The company is happy with increased sales, employees are happy when they can come home to their families, and we’re happy to assist by doing what we love- managing our clients’ aircraft and being a part of their success story!” Needless to say, an investment with Plane Solutions is a necessity for any business seeking an edge over competitors. For more information, you can check out Plane Solutions’ website here: http://planesolutionsllc.com or give them a call for an informative discussion at 952-406-8355. Minnesota is uniquely positioned to host such an important event because of its vast and well-known love of golf. The state has one of the most active and dedicated golf communities in the country, which is critical to the success of a global event of this magnitude. In addition to strong golf community, there are vibrant and active corporate and volunteer bases from which to draw. Even during economic hardships, the sport of golf remains robust and resilient in the State of Minnesota. The roster of Fortune 500 companies and other local businesses support the sport with sponsorships, donations, charitable participation and volunteer involvement. A hospitable golf community and a dedicated golf club membership are important factors in the selection of Ryder Cup host venues. Hazeltine National Golf Club ranks among Golf Magazine’s Top 15 courses nationally – and it’s not by accident. It’s the result of devoted members and a steadfast leadership team that are committed to upholding the key mission of the club as set forth by the founders,

Execution of the Hazeltine vision by its members can be seen day in and day out through the diligent and ardent caretaking of every corner of their course. The course is regularly maintained as a preeminent golf facility, but does require some special care in preparation for the Ryder Cup. These efforts are managed by Chris Tritabaugh, Golf Course Superintendent. Tritabaugh’s team consists of 50 people each day preparing the course throughout the summer, but that number jumps to 100 people between Labor Day and Sept 27 when the course is closed. t’s back! Prairie Brewfest is making its third glorious appearance this September, where anyone 21+ is welcome to sample a variety of cold and delicious craft beer from Bauhaus Brew Labs, Big Wood Brewing, Lake Monster Brewing, LTD Brewing, Mankato Brewery, and Surly Brewing, to name a few. Overall, around fifteen craft brewers are expected to participate in this year’s event, pouring more than fifty different varieties of beers and ciders. Don’t care for beer? That’s ok - there will be wine served, as well! Get your groove on with some classic rock from classic guys, too, as Dave Lindahl and Wondercure will be returning as the live music venue for this year’s event. Where fun meets philanthropy: Conceived nearly three years ago, Prairie Brewfest came about as an exciting way to introduce the Eden Prairie Community Foundation’s work. Over the years, they’ve given about $1.6 million in grants to over sixty organizations serving people who live or work in Eden Prairie, as well as having been a fiscal sponsor for many distinguished projects, such as the Veterans Memorial and Miracle Field. When residents give to the Foundation, attend one of its events (ahem, Prairie Brewfest), or start a fund at Eden Prairie Community Foundation, they’re helping make Eden Prairie better. The who, the what, the when, and the where: This year’s event has changed locations from the SouthWest Transit Parking Ramp to the ever-gorgeous Purgatory Creek Park. For a mere $30 advance ticket price per person, come on out from 3-6 pm on Saturday, September 10, 2016, and support the Eden Prairie Community Foundation with the fundraiser and “friendraiser” that is Prairie Brewfest! MAKING CONNECTIONS IN EDEN PRAIRIE ARTICLE ANDREW STAVAST | PHOTOGRAPHY MAIRE MCMAHON

e are all familiar with unique and famous small business startup stories. Jeff Bezos of Amazon began his retail odyssey by holding meetings at a nearby Barnes and Noble. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield began Ben and Jerry’s in a rundown gas station in Burlington, Vermont. Young Michael Kitteridge started making candles at home from melted crayons, so began Yankee Candle Company. In America, we love success stories. All things are possible. We live for potential. An entrepreneur has an idea, believes in a concept, feeds and supports a small business passionately and so the road to success is begun. Eden Prairie is the home to just such a success story …and it continues at today at MyCableMart.com. In 2005, Eden Prairie resident Neil Marriott was employed as a Systems Analyst at St Jude Medical working on ERP Software, Device Tracking and Data Warehousing. Neil had an idea. Start a business in a spare room at home selling audio/ video connectivity via the web. At first, the concept was to earn some extra money from home. MyCableMart.com was born. We live in a connected world, and Neil was providing cables, accessories, connections to video and audio, connecting all of our home electronics.
36
Eden Prairie Lifestyle | September 2016
The home and business market demand for connectivity was growing and Neil was there. By 2006 MyCableMart.com needed more space and moved to a 1200 sq. ft. warehouse in Eden Prairie. 2006 was an exciting time for the home theatre market as the first LCD and plasma TV’s were hitting the market. The big “digital conversions” were just starting! By 2007 MyCableMart.com expanded by doubling its space and doubled yet again. Today Neil and his staff occupy over 12,000 square feet of well stocked inventory at 6224 Bury Drive in Eden Prairie. MyCableMart.com currently does business in all 50 states and 64 Countries. Today, MyCableMart.com serves both the residential and business communities. They are experts in the residential DIY Audio/Video world along with the business
marketplace. If you live in Eden Prairie and have a connectivity project, stop in and see Neil and his staff. They pride themselves in great customer service. If you have a moment to speak with Neil, talk to him about aviation. He got bitten by the flight bug 5 years ago and now is a member of the Cloud7 flying club at Flying Cloud Airport. Neil, his wife Brenda and two children ages 14 and 15 love living in Eden Prairie. Neil Marriott and MyCableMart. com would be a great connection to make. MyCableMart.com is at 6224 Bury Drive in Eden Prairie. Telephone number is 952-486-8736. MyCableMart.com business hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 am – 5:00 pm, Thursday open later until 7:00 pm, and Saturday’s 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

beginning is key. • Why do we want a patio? • How are we going to use it? • Where will it go? Most of us cannot DIY a patio. No matter which product you select, (Concrete, Natural Stone, Flagstone, Brick, Wood) the base that is prepared under the product is what is going to make the biggest difference in the longevity and performance of the product.Your understanding of how to prepare the foundation will allow you to compare the quotes. You’ve got a budget; you’ve done your research now it’s time to compile all of your “inspiration” pictures so that you can share your vision with the Contractor. Be prepared to clearly tell the sales person giving you a quote what you want and the time frame up front. Knowing what you want to achieve will make this a winning project and enhance the value of your beautiful home. This is a chance to really express yourself so don’t stop at the patio – think about how your landscape design can or will change because of your new patio. Colors of product should be a compliment the color of your home. And every Patio needs ‘pops’ of color.
Your understanding of how to prepare the foundation will allow you to compare the quotes.
Hint: You can stage your patio and landscape renovation over a couple of summers. A good contractor will know this but a great contractor will help you with the whole plan so that your results are stunning throughout each step. Let’s get started! Send us pictures of your before and after! We’d love to share it and we’ll surely find a nice ‘thank you for sharing gift’ to send out to you too! The food designed by the legendary Scott Foster (famous locally for Hazelwood, Chester’s, Pescara, Terza) is so de-lish! Foster’s flavor palate is always a big hit. It doesn’t matter if you’re a carnivore or vegan; there are many tasty choices on the menu. Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner-Late Night this team is ready to serve. A great service experience can make or break any restaurant visit. This team is comprised of long time well-seasoned staff. They stay for a couple reasons other than the delicious eats. The staff turnover is very limited because of the management team and ownership – both believe great staff and great food makes great guests! It’s hard to keep all the balls in the air with a restaurant but The Tavern 4&5 does it every day. Located in the NE corner of Hwy’s 4&5 (thus the name) it’s the perfect location. Close to the High School and Community Center it draws crowds when sporting events are going on. This is one of those places that has it all – whether your young or old Tavern 4&5 will please you.
