FLYING DUTCHMAN SPIRITS

Where Liquor and Memories Are Made

There’s no place like your local liquor distillery and cocktail lounge for the holidays! Which holidays? Every holiday!

Last Halloween was off the hook. Flying Dutchman Spirits served a flurry of specialty cocktails like “Poison Apple” and “Frankenstein’s Fury” to Eden Prairie’s spookiest revelers.

All of December was marked for Christmas. Flying Dutchman decorated to a fare-thee-well with thousands of ornaments, collected toys for Toys for Tots, and hosted a hoot of an ugly sweater party.

New Year's Eve is still upcoming! Go for the balloon drop, dancing and cocktails. The DJ will play contemporary hits (which will technically become out-of-date hits at the strike of midnight).

No place is more romantic than Flying Dutchman. Bring your amore there this Valentine’s Day for dinner for two and cocktails for at least as many, and drink in the soulful, velvety singing of Mr. Geoff Jones.

Check out what’s coming up at fdspirits.com. Buy a bottle of locally distilled bliss at 6801 Flying Cloud Drive!

NORDQUIST TAX & BUSINESS SERVICES

Do you want to know how to do your own taxes? It’s actually very easy. First, add up all the money you don’t want to send to the government. (This figure should equal all your money.) Then pull out your formal stationary and pen the following:

Dear Danny Werfel, Congratulations on recently becoming 50th Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. Your predecessor Charles Rettig was also a good Commissioner, but I think I like you better. You’ve got

that certain “it” factor a great Commissioner needs, and you look good in neckties.

So, about my taxes. Thing is, I just don’t think I can pay them this year. It’s, like, the economy, you know? I’m sure you get it. Your neckties don’t look cheap. Anyway, please be a lamb and mark me as “filed.” (I am open to any refunds you want to send my way.)

REGNER HEALTH solutions

THE FUTURE OF MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS, TODAY!

A weight loss article usually kicks off with an upbeat lede. “Increase your confidence!” “Get ready for bikini season!”

“Discover a healthier, happier you!” It then proceeds to describe some cockamamie treatment that will be abandoned in a few years’ time. Remember Belviq? Fintepla? Meridia? Obetrol? Pondimin? Redux? Right. There are good reasons why top article-writing minds will never again write excited articles about those particular weight loss drugs.

But semaglutide? Now there’s the exception. It was developed by top pharmaceutical minds to treat type 2 diabetes. The FDA approved it in 2017 for that very purpose. But of all the countless semaglutide ads you’ve seen so far, few if any have even mentioned diabetes. That’s because one of semaglutide’s side effects is in far higher demand than diabetes treatment will ever be.

So forget about confidence, bikinis, and a happier, healthier you. These things are all very important, of course, but semaglutide doesn’t need such frills attached to it. The drug simply works – IT HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT – and you don’t have to pay name brand prices for it at Regner Health Solutions.

“I was skeptical about semaglutide at first,” said David Regner. “But when my own wife tried it and started losing weight, I saw that medical science really was onto something. Here was an opportunity to help people like never before! And I also had the good fortune to begin helping people alongside the best business partner I could have hoped for: my son.”

“We opened Regner Health Solutions in Bloomington in 2022,” said Ben Regner. “Although we had done a lot of intensive research beforehand, we were still worried that semaglutide was too good to be true. Now that we’ve treated over 400 patients, we’re relieved to know our initial apprehensions were unfounded. Semaglutide works.”

“Semaglutide works by slowing the digestive process,” explained David. “It also helps the pancreas release insulin, and it acts directly on the brain’s appetite centers as well – two more reasons why patients feel fully satisfied after eating smaller meals.”

CONTINUED >

“My professional standards prohibit me from calling any medication ‘miraculous,’” added Ben. “That said, part of what makes semaglutide so remarkable is its suitability for virtually all patients. Some come to us because they want to lose a few pounds before a big wedding. Some are struggling to drop the baby weight. Others might weigh over 400 pounds, and would do anything to avoid bariatric surgery. We’ve treated octogenarians. We’ve treated 15-year-olds with their parents’ approval. All of them begin losing weight immediately.”

“Overweight patients usually lose two to three pounds each week,” said David. “Obese patients may lose up to five pounds a week. Naturally, diet and exercise play a huge role in the kinds of results our patients experience, but they will see better results than they could have through diet and exercise alone.”

“Getting started is easy,” said Ben. “Just visit our clinic for your initial consultation. You’ll fill out some basic paperwork. We’ll measure your weight, height and blood pressure. There will be no blood work. Once you have video chatted with Michael Zbiegien, MD, our Minnesota-licensed doctor – and we have confirmed everything is good to go with your own primary care physician – you’ll be ready to start treatment that very same day: a single injection.

“You’ll continue visiting our clinic weekly for the first four or five weeks. We want to make sure everything is proceeding healthily, and fine-tune your dosage if need be. Once we’ve determined the best treatment plan for your unique needs, you’re ready to start self-dosing at home. You’ll only have to visit our clinic each month for a quick checkup and to receive your new supply. It’s all month-by-month – no long-term commitment.”

“We strive to make medical weight loss affordable to everyone,” said David. “That’s why we don’t prescribe name brand drugs, which can easily cost $1,700 a month. Our generic alternative has the exact same effects. It just costs $399 a month instead.”

“Our patients aren’t just happier with their appearance,” said Ben. “They receive all the other benefits of weight loss as well. Improved sleep. Reduced blood pressure. Lower likelihood of diabetes, and lower incidence of joint issues, too. It really is amazing what a single weekly injection can do!”

SUMMIT ORTHOPEDICS

PASSIONATE DOCTORS ARE THE BACKBONE OF GREAT ORTHOPEDIC CARE

Summit Orthopedics’ Eden Prairie clinic offers walk-in urgent care, two on-site X-ray machines, and immediate access to five state-of-the-art surgery centers throughout the Twin Cities metro.

But if you stripped away all its amenities, Summit Orthopedics would still provide unsurpassed care for arthritis, sports injuries, and any other injury affecting anyplace bones meet. That’s because Summit Orthopedics is home to preeminent authorities on joint conditions: five dozen skilled physicians, plus the small army of nurses, therapists, assistants and physician assistants they need to do their best work.

Elbows. Hips and Knees. Back, neck and spine. Wrists, hands, feet and ankles. Summit Orthopedics has multiple experts dedicated to each. But it’s the spine which fascinates me most. What kind of doctor would dare attempt solving such a byzantine riddle of nerve and bone? One like Steven M. Stulc, D.O., who sees patients at Summit Orthopedics’ Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, Monticello and Plymouth clinics.

“I grew up in Spirit Lake, Idaho. I also grew up with shin splints and a lot of back pain, which greatly limited the activities I could enjoy. I felt shamed and ostracized when I didn’t even bother trying out for football. None of the other boys believed I could be in so much pain.

“Fortunately for me, my small town’s local chiropractor did. He made me feel 100 percent better in no time. The change was so miraculous that it made me want to become a healer, too. Four years of undergraduate, four years of medical school, five years of residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, and one fellowship in interventional pain medicine later, and I was truly ready to help others like he had helped me.

“The spine is an incredibly challenging focus. It is an intricate arrangement of moving parts, and the only part of the body where nerves actually meet joints. The most arthritic hip in the world won’t directly affect joints, but a spine that is only slightly out of tune can – and may cause excruciating pain because of it.

“Studying such a complex part of the skeletal system is academically stimulating. I regret that I won’t live long enough to know everything I would like to about the spine. But the true reward for so much study is the relief I’m able to bring to my patients. When you successfully treat an arthritic spinal joint, herniated disc, or pinched nerve, you restore your patient’s sleep, work, relationships, hobbies, and everything else pain once deprived them of. And even if I can’t solve a problem, I can at least soften it through therapy, medication, spine injections, and every other healing modality known to my profession.

“We saw that Summit Orthopedics had adopted a genuine patient-centric approach, and prioritized healing far ahead of profits. We also recognized the highest caliber of leadership, which values every contribution every team member makes.”

“One recent patient sticks out sharply in my mind. She was an older woman, who was in agonizing pain due to a compression fracture in one of the vertebrae in her lower back. I knew that a vertebroplasty – a minimally invasive surgical procedure, in which bone cement is injected into a vertebra to strengthen it, relieve pain, and restore mobility – represented her best path forward. Her insurance company, however, disagreed, and determined to make her wait several months before reviewing her claim again.

“I began a campaign of phone calls to her insurance provider. I also sent letters describing her plight; how she lived alone, and wasn’t functioning well, and was nearly certain to develop other problems if her condition were allowed to worsen. Finally they yielded. It was one of the most triumphant vertebroplasties I ever performed. That was around five years ago, and she’s still doing well.

“Victories like those are why you become a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.

“And I’m glad I get to share them with Summit Orthopedics. Before this, I was one of seven physicians practicing at the Institute for Low Back & Neck Care in Plymouth. It was an excellent clinic – almost universally positively reviewed, which treated more and more patients each year. Even so, we believed joining a larger practice would be in everyone’s best interests: our doctors’ and our patients’ alike.

“We were drawn to Summit Orthopedics right away. It is a large organization with 25 clinics throughout the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota and Western Wisconsin areas, yet still very personable. We saw that Summit Orthopedics had adopted a genuine patient-centric approach, and prioritized healing far ahead of profits. We also recognized the highest caliber of leadership, which values every contribution every team member makes.

“We joined Summit Orthopedics nine years ago. Out of the seven of us, five are still here. If not for one’s retirement and another’s move to a warmer climate, I am confident we would all still be here today. Short of becoming a doctor, I consider joining Summit Orthopedics my greatest professional decision to date.”

Summit Orthopedics is located at 11995 Singletree Lane, Suite 325 in Eden Prairie. Visit summitortho.com to learn more and book a consultation, or call (651) 5048461 for urgent care.

URBAN SPEECH & OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

WHERE KIDS HAVE THEIR FIRSTS

Talk the talk. Walk the walk. This is the essence of Urban Speech & Occupational Therapy (USOT).

Since its foundation by a pediatric speech-language pathologist three years ago, USOT has become one of the Twin Cities’ leading providers of individualized speech therapy. Today its six speech therapists guide children toward fluency with the utmost skill and compassion. Luka the sunny faced therapy dog also lends a paw (amazingly, as her own linguistic skills aren’t good).

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

Here’s the thing about pediatric speech-language pathology: you don’t spend years studying it because you find phonemes, morphemes and fricatives so very, very interesting. You only make it your life’s work if you’re compelled to help beautiful, innocent children.

“In addition to speech, many of our clients come to USOT for support with everyday activities and developmental skills,” said Julie Urban, M.S. CCC-SLP. “Gross motor skills, like running or climbing up stairs; fine motor skills, like eating with utensils or getting dressed; if a child experiences challenges or delays in these everyday tasks, they are able to develop through occupational therapy.

“That’s why we added two occupational therapists to our team last year. They’re teaching the balance, coordination and motor planning a child needs in order to catch up to their peers, achieve greater independence, and become more confident in their ability to navigate the world.” Swings. Slides. Monkey bars. A trampoline, climbing wall, and technicolor ball pit. The USOT sensory gym is filled with a variety of sensorimotor equipment that allow children to explore and grow in a safe and therapist-guided environment. It’s a supportive and habilitative setting for children to build life skills in. It’s also where you’ll find Lauren Schmidt, OTD, OTR/L.

“LEARNING NEW SKILLS. REACHING NEW MILESTONES.

BUILDING NEW RELATIONSHIPS."

“Learning new skills. Reaching new milestones. Building new relationships. Occupational therapy helps kids do all of these wonderful things. It’s the most uplifting career I could have hoped for,” said Lauren.

“In occupational therapy, ‘occupations’ are everyday activities that give your life meaning and purpose. In addition to bathing, toileting, eating, sleeping, dressing and learning, a child’s main occupation is play. That makes sense, because play is a primary way children develop.

“To the passive observer, occupational therapy might look indistinguishable from regular playtime. If a child and I build an obstacle course and take turns completing it together, they’re having fun – but just as importantly, these types of activities can be integrated to build executive functioning skills through generating ideas, attending to visual schedules, building sequences, and solving problems. Obstacle courses also provide opportunities to practice modulating sensory input, regulate emotions,

strengthen balance, coordination, and motor planning.

USOT therapists see clients with a variety of backgrounds and abilities including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, ADHD, developmental delay, sensory processing challenges, and more. They help each client achieve their goals, build life skills, and feel more successful in their day-to-day activities.

To USOT therapists, the most rewarding feeling is seeing a child take a step, self-advocate, feed themself, tie their shoes, or invite a peer to play for the first time. Helping children feel success, meaning, and connection in their daily lives is what they do, starting at even the most basic levels, such as joint attention. The USOT team’s passionate therapists provide child-centered therapy that supports clients and their families through the most pivotal stages of their lives.

Urban Speech & Occupational Therapy welcomes children of all ages and abilities to its clinic at 6409 City West Parkway, Suite 206 in Eden Prairie. Please visit urbanspeechmn.com to learn more, or call (952) 500-8871 to schedule an initial consultation for your child.

"The ultimate aim of karate lies not in victory nor defeat, but in the perfection of character."
– Gichin Funakoshi.

DOJO Karate

Martial Arts and Fitness for All Ages

Prior to becoming a magazine writer, I was what is known as a “dojo buster.” The lifestyle entailed roaming the countryside in search of dojos so I could challenge every master and disciple inside.

Challenge them … to karate.

I faced off against multiple opponents at once. I faced off against giants wielding large and spiked weapons. I even fought a guy who looked just like pre-grill George Foreman. I emerged victorious every time, because MY karate is the strongest.

Or so I thought.

One day I was meditating under the cherry blossoms of Mt. Minnesota, when suddenly I sensed the most powerful aura I had ever sensed. I peered up at the polite and friendly figure which had somehow manifested before me. He was dressed in a bright red gi, and rimmed by sunlight such that I couldn’t make out his features. He spoke: “Ready to fight a real opponent for a change?”

I cracked a half grin and cocked an eyebrow. “Hmph,” I said, rising. “Took you long enough.”

What followed was the greatest martial arts duel the world ever saw. I’ll spare you the details. What’s important is that I tasted defeat for the very first time. Bruised and beaten, I crawled to my opponent’s feet, clutched a leg of his zubon,

hung my head down, and begged him to teach me. A tear rolled down my cheek – a single, glassy bead of humility.

“Sure thing!” said the man, who appeared before me at that moment as a 100-foot-tall fiery dragon. “Just come on down to DOJO Karate, where we offer martial arts classes for preschoolers all the way up to adults, as well as fitness kickboxing. We also host fun children’s birthday parties!”

I would later find out that man is Tyler Hauler: head instructor of Eden Prairie’s own DOJO Karate, and co-owner alongside Maddie Loche and his father T.J. Hauler.

“My dad and I started doing karate together when I was 5 years old. I loved the time we spent together. I loved coming out of my shell. As I grew older, I became passionate about the sparring and competition aspects of karate, and motivated to gain new responsibilities by progressing in rank. It’s been a lifelong passion, and I’m excited to continue it right here at DOJO Karate.

“The best thing about karate, however, is teaching it. My part in preserving this ancient tradition is admittedly small, though it’s an honor to play it all the same. It’s also a blessing to share something I cherish with so many people every day, and help them have fun, get fit, and build confidence while I’m at it.”

If you’re looking for a karate instructor who will teach you how to become a more effective bully, then Tyler just isn’t your guy. The path of the DOJO Karate student is a righteous one. It’s also potentially safer.

“There’s no denying that karate could come in handy during a self-defense scenario,” said Tyler. “Martial arts weren’t invented because everyone is nice to each other all the time. They are meant as a last resort, though, which is why we teach students to avoid threatening situations, attempt to deescalate when they can’t, and run for the hills when that fails. For a lot of kids, just knowing they can defend themself gives them the confidence they need to stand up to any bullies who get in their way.

“Every age group takes so much from karate. Preschoolers love an environment where they’re encouraged – not just allowed, but encouraged – to yell all they want. They make new friends, learn the tiniest bit of structure, and get a rewarding introduction to exercise while they’re at it. By grade school, kids are really looking for the confidence they need to navigate the world. We don’t give them that confidence, but we do create the best

environment where they can earn it themselves. Older students also appreciate becoming stronger and learning how to fight. They’re often surprised by how meditative karate can be, and find they have better focus after rehearsing their ‘katas,’ or pre-arranged forms.

“Looking for a more condensed and aerobic workout? Then you’ll definitely want to check out our group kickboxing classes, which are all about heavy bags, mitt drills, and blowing off steam in the healthiest way possible. And if you want to treat your kid to a one-of-a-kind birthday party, then you couldn’t pick a better spot for it than our dojo. Even kids with no previous experience can learn how to punch or kick a board in half by the end of the party – always a surefire crowd-pleaser. We have plenty of room for cake, presents, and other games, too. We’ve put a bouncy house in here a couple of times!”

Visit dojokarate.com. Call (952) 522-3656. Email edenprairie@dojokarate.com. Stop by 7916 Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie. Just whatever you do, do not pass up this opportunity to become a karate master like me and Tyler!

“It’s also a blessing to share something I cherish with so many people every day, and help them have fun, get fit, and build confidence while I’m at it.”

it takes a VILLAGE

As people age, they often have to modify their lifestyles, whether that’s diet, exercise, downsizing or the need for assistance. This can create a lot of anxiety, especially when it comes to leaving the place they call home.

Friendship Village of Bloomington, a non-profit organization, has been making this process a lot easier for our neighbors since it opened its doors in 1979. With 565 residents, their every need and desire is taken to heart in a luxurious atmosphere.

“We have an upscale homey feel when you walk in the door,” says community outreach coordinator, Linay McCrady. “Many families tell me that they love the natural light that comes into the rooms from the large windows and they enjoy the tasteful artwork in the hallways. They feel at home with the warm colors throughout the community.”

In addition to the pleasing aesthetics, the reception team greets everyone with a smile and its staff members are also very welcoming. “Our staff is dedicated and loves the residents,” she says. “I have had many residents say that no matter how busy someone is, they always make sure to stop and say hello and help them with whatever they need.”

CONTINUED >

Supporting Seniors Through all Phases of Their Journeys

Friendship Village can accommodate those who don’t need any help to others who may need continuous assistance. “We have Independent Living (with our own home care team that can supply additional support, if needed), Assisted Living (for those who are needing more nursing support), Memory Care (for residents that are in need of a secure environment), Transitional Care (for residents that need short-term rehab), and Skilled Nursing (for people who need extensive nursing support).”

Having all the levels of care on-site allows residents to move from one level of care to another without having to leave the community. It provides that peace of mind that no matter where they are on their health journey, they will be cared for in a comfortable and pleasing atmosphere.

“Having our own home-care team is a unique service that we have on-site,” says Linay. “They support our residents in their current living environment to help them enjoy their home as long as possible before moving to the next phase of their health care journey. Having the full continuum of care is a huge benefit of Friendship Village.”

The community also offers on-site occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and 24-hour nursing in its health center. All of these services allow residents to feel that they’re getting the best care possible.

Friendship Village also provides 24-hour security so residents and their families know that they are safe and secure. “I recently had a new resident from our assisted living community tell me that they feel safe and loved here,” she says. “They were nervous about moving back to Minnesota, but we made the transition feel like home and they will always be grateful for the kind and loving staff that helped support them.”

While many residents are able to venture out on their own and go into town, there are plenty of activities to enjoy right on campus. There are two fitness centers with classes and personal training services, a pool and hot tub, a sports simulator, and a putting green.

In addition, the beautiful common spaces and walking paths all around the community encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors. There is also an on-site bank, several salons, a town car service, companion services, and massage therapists. There are 35 resident-run interest groups as well, so residents can stay as physically and mentally active as they are able to or prefer.

“We have an upscale homey feel when you walk in the door.”

There are also plenty of options for food and dining. There are four main dining areas and one bistro. “Elements is a dining room area in our independent living that offers modern cuisine served by our attentive and talented culinary team in an upscale atmosphere; Northern Lights is the main dining room in our health center that is used for our assisted living community and offers the same experience as Elements; Loons Nest is a restaurant that offers filling, comfortable fare in a laid-back atmosphere; Fruit N’ Nut Café is a great place to grab a casual bite or grab-and-go snacks to fuel your adventures; and Oak Terrace Lounge is a fun place to meet friends for drinks before dinner.”

Everyone on staff, she says, is there to serve the residents and make them as comfortable as possible. “I feel lucky to work for a company that puts the residents first and truly listens to what the residents want for their lives. We have excellent staff and leadership to make sure that everyone is heard. Friendship Village of Bloomington truly is a small village that works together to support the residents in all facets of their lives.”

As a result of this caring staff, Friendship Village is currently home to over 30 second-generation residents and a few third-generation. It has also been awarded number four in the nation and number one in the state by Newsweek as a continuing care community.

SPIRITS

Starkey

THE FUTURE OF HEARING AIDS IS YOUR NEIGHBOR

You were born inside an unknowably large, infinitesimally complicated, and indescribably beautiful universe. You have just this one chance to make sense of it all. Best take it with all of your senses.

If that means wearing hearing aids, so be it. Others may notice them and form impressions of you, but those impressions are worth less than the paper this article is printed on. (To be sure, it is high-quality paper that was carefully selected for your reading pleasure, though it admittedly isn’t worth much in the grand scheme of things.)

And you know what? No one will remember you for wearing hearing aids. Take Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela as examples. Both wore hearing aids, but that’s seldom the first thing people associate them with.

More specifically, both wore hearing aids manufactured by Starkey: the only American-owned global hearing aid manufacturer, which is headquartered in the city nearest and dearest to the Eden Prairie Lifestyle editorial team’s hearts.

“I’m a baby boomer,” said Dr. Dave Fabry, chief hearing health officer for Starkey. “As many boomers would attest, we tend to think of ourselves as 10 to 15 years younger than our chronological age (at least until we look in the mirror). Unfortunately, because of the age-related stigma traditionally associated with use of hearing aids, many from my generation have delayed or deferred the decision to purchase hearing aids. Worse yet, hearing loss affects nearly half of people aged 65 and older, which means a large number of my generational cohorts aren’t living their best lives.

“We’re doing our part to change that, and we’re doing it the best way we know how: through our relentless focus on providing the best benefits to the patient. Starkey is committed to making hearing aids so effective, so practical, and, dare I say it, so cool , that boomers will instantly appreciate just how indispensable they truly are.

“Nothing exemplifies the future of hearing aid technology better than its incorporation of artificial intelligence. When you wear one of Starkey’s state-of-the-art devices, it’s not unlike having your own J.A.R.V.I.S. – ‘Just a Rather Very Intelligent System,’ the AI built into Iron Man’s suit.

“We originally intended AI to help the patient correctly wear and maintain their hearing aids, but it progressed into so much more. Our latest models, including the recently released Edge AI hearing aids, are so advanced that they can translate over 70 different languages in real time. If someone speaks to you in Spanish, you will hear the translation in your hearing aids as soon as they’ve spoken it. And once you’ve spoken your response in English, the AI will instruct how to repeat it in en español.

Dr. Dave Fabry, Chief Innovation Officer

Starkey is committed to making hearing aids so effective, so practical, and, dare I say it, so cool, that boomers will instantly appreciate just how indispensable they truly are.

“That’s only scratching the surface of AI’s benefits to the user. In addition to providing crystal clear sound quality and outstanding speech intelligibility in quiet and noisy listening environments, our intelligent hearing aids can stream calls and audio from a smart phone, count steps, and notify emergency services (and text up to three emergency contacts) if it senses the wearer has fallen while wearing their devices. That alone should provide enormous peace of mind to hearing aid users who want to remain in their own homes, and dread the thought of becoming the ‘80s TV commercial lady who had fallen and couldn’t get up.

“While a fall detection feature is great, it’s already too late if someone breaks their hip, like my own mother did. The fall didn’t kill her, although it did begin a downward spiral of health that accelerated her demise. That’s why Edge AI enables hearing aid wearers to self-monitor strength, gait, and balance to identify potential deficiencies relative to their age group, and then improve their performance through exercise or physical therapy with the goal of preventing falls before they occur.

“Hearing loss typically doesn’t occur in a vacuum. In addition to balance, it is often associated with elevated risks of cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. Our hearing aids are designed to help users become more physically active by automatically tracking steps, exercise and musculoskeletal strength, as well as more socially engaged so they can avoid the isolation, depression and loneliness that often accompany untreated hearing loss. At Starkey, we believe hearing care is health care, and we are committed to helping hearing aid users from every generation hear and live better.

“The medical science behind hearing loss – and the technology that goes into its treatment – are both endlessly fascinating. They’re why I’ve cherished every minute of my career, which now spans over four decades. That’s nothing compared to William F. Austin, however, who founded Starkey in 1967 and still sees patients in The Center for Excellence at our headquarters in Eden Prairie, as well as around the world. Our focus on ‘servant leadership’ and patientdriven care began with Mr. Austin, and continues to this day under the guidance of Brandon Sawalich, CEO. I firmly believe we owe all our success to those core values.”

Do you believe you might need hearing aids? That’s not just okay. That’s cool! Talk to your doctor about whether you need a hearing screening, and visit starkey.com to discover why the world’s best hearing aids are made right here in town.

The Galápagos Islands
If you’ve not yet felt the relaxedness and grandeur that sit at either side of a topside chaise lounge, let 2025 be your year of ascension!

You can fly most anywhere nowadays. There’s just one problem. You will be miserable the entire way there, because you will be inside the two worst places there are: an airport, and an airplane.

That’s part of what makes cruises so special. Sure, faster and more direct forms of transportation are available. But instead of being made to feel like a despised tinned fish, boat travel lovingly welcomes you to feel like a spoiled yet dignified princess. Or prince. You get it. It’s nice.

If you’ve not yet felt the relaxedness and grandeur that sit at either side of a topside chaise lounge, let 2025 be your year of ascension! But you can’t just cruise about aimlessly. Your vacation demands nothing less than a thrilling and memorable destination.

Thrilling and memorable destinations just so happen to be our specialty here at Cruise Planners of Eden Prairie. If you’re excited to cruise but still ambivalent about where, then we extend our top five picks for your consideration.

THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS

The Galápagos Islands hold quasi-religious importance to biologists. It is where Charles Darwin got the very clever idea that life has not always been like it is today.

It’s easy to see how he got that notion. The Galápagos Islands look as though they were plucked straight out of the Mesozoic era and deposited in the Eastern Pacific. There are volcanic peaks, lava fields, emerald bays, cloud forests, and picturesque inlets. Really, the entire landscape looks like something Dr. Seuss would have come up with if you’d told him to go nuts.

Ecuador, which the islands belong to, has enacted strict conservationist laws to protect their famed biodiversity. Giant tortoises. Marine iguanas. Sea lions. Adorable penguins. The blue-footed booby, in all its blue-footed splendor. No place has more remarkable wildlife than the Galápagos Islands.

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

Boat rides to Australia used to be doled out exclusively as punishment. Today they are the pinnacle of luxury. Funny, what a couple of centuries can do.

Most Americans know Australia for three landmarks: the Sydney Opera House, Ayers Rock, and approximately 53 billion square miles of uninhabitable desert. But the Down Under is so much more! The tropical and mostly uninhabited Whitsunday Islands. Lucky Bay, a thin ribbon of bright white sand lining an azure blue sea (and a popular sunbathing spot among local kangaroos). The Kimberly, which comprises Western Australia’s northernmost regions, where you can cruise through immaculate ochre-colored gorges lined by waterfalls. And these are just three of the thousands of shrimp on the Australian sightseeing barbie!

Australia’s closeness to New Zealand makes it even more appealing as a cruise destination. Auckland is known as the “City of Sails” for very good reason, and is gorgeous from its harbor at any angle. Venture inland to explore the Glowworm Caves, which really and truly are lit up by glowworms, or the ever-popular Hobbiton – the set from The Lord of the Rings, preserved intact.

THE CARIBBEAN

We know, we know – the Caribbean hardly ranks as one of the most original cruise destinations. But you know what? It’s cliché for good reason.

The sprawling chalk-colored beaches of St. Lucia. The virgin coral reefs, unbelievably delicious food, and surprisingly large donkey sanctuary of Aruba. Roatán, Honduras, where endless lush jungle and the world’s second largest barrier reef await hikers and snorkelers, respectively. All 76 square miles of the Cayman Islands, which are replete with secluded beaches. And let us not forget Curaçao – the island, not the liqueur, and yet another of the Caribbean’s 700 sun-kissed patches of tropical paradise. Each is a perfect excuse to follow convention. Caribbean cruises are bliss.

SOUTH AMERICA

Keep going south past the Caribbean and you’ll hit South America. Can’t miss it. It’s well worth going the extra miles for, because it boasts some of the finest cruising the world has to offer.

We recognize that an entire continent is a somewhat broad choice for a cruise destination. If we were forced to narrow it down to three, then we’d have to recommend:

• Punta del Este, a glamorous resort town in Uruguay with world-class surfing and nightlife to match •

• The hundreds of miles of scenic fjords and fjord-like channels between Cape Town and Reloncaví Estuary in Chile

• The Falkland Islands, where visitors are enthralled by stunning landscapes and exotic wildlifeSoutheast Asia

Ah, Southeast Asia – our favorite intercardinal direction of Asia. So long as you bear its drenching monsoon season in mind (May through October), a cruise there will treat you to some of the most brilliant cultural diversity, natural beauty, and affordable travel you’ll ever encounter.

Southeast Asia contains thousands of miles of bright blue threads: rivers surrounded by rainforests, mountains, and some of the greatest cuisine you’ll ever try. But if you only stick to its islands, Southeast Asia still won’t disappoint. There is Phú Quoc, Vietnam’s most popular destination for water sports, where you can hike through a jungle and repose on white sand over a span of minutes. There is Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, and a gem of natural beauty set against the pristine Andaman Sea. And if you’re looking for some of the world’s most fabulous nightlife, then Koh Rong – aka "The Maldives of Cambodia" – will not let you down.

Delicious crab in Cambodia, too.
