YJWhen you put as much food on as many tables as we do, you learn a thing or two about giving thanks.
Thanks to our customers for choosing us.
Thanks to our employees for sharing your talents with us.
Thanks to our partners for producing amazing products for us to sell.
Thanks to all for your friendship and loyalty. It is an honor to be your grocer at this time of year and all year long.
In all the ways that you make us part of your lives, thank you.
May your holiday season be full of happiness, kindness and, most of all, the joy of good food.
What a Whirlwind
In the famous words of Ferris Bueller…”Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
2024 was the fastest year that I can remember. Am I the only one? We certainly packed in the community news each month and highlighted a lot of great people and businesses here in Edina.
Our final issue of the year is centered around giving. Even though our lives are full of moments and memories, it always feels good to pay it forward or give back to one another. Whether it is buying a coffee for the person behind you, donating to local organizations or volunteering your time, the holidays are oftentimes when others need it the most.
Nationally, City Lifestyle gives back to families across the country who are nominated locally through individual publications. In this issue, you will read an article that talks about how our Giving Campaign works and ways to raise awareness for local people who could use a helping hand.
If you are looking for last minute gifts, Melissa, founder of Rebel Citizen company, has fun Edina swag for you to wear around town. Being an Edina mom has inspired her to share the spirit of entrepreneurship and pride in our city. Year end can also be a great time to purchase a vehicle and take advantage of some of the most discounted pricing of the season. The features of the Land Rover Defender and Range Rover Sport mix rugged with luxury for the best of both worlds.
The holidays can be filled with a lot of snacking on delicious treats and gathering for family meals. If you want something fresh for the family, Yumi offers a great atmosphere and fabulous sushi.
Lastly, if you will be entertaining and cooking at home for the holidays, the new Kowalski’s Edina store is stocked with everything you need. Being family owned, Mary Anne and Kris share their strong focus on building community and providing some of the best quality foods available today.
Sending love and hope to the Edina community this holiday season and beyond,
December 2024

Dishing Up a World of Flavor
When Myoung Kim, fondly known as Yumi, opened Yumi’s Sushi Bar in Excelsior in 1999, it became a beloved spot for locals to enjoy the freshest and highest-quality sushi in a warm and welcoming environment. When Yumi was ready to retire in 2018, Innerbloom Hospitality took over the beloved restaurant, expanding not only the menu, but also the number of locations.
Today, in addition to Excelsior, Yumi Japanese Restaurant + Bar can be found in St. Paul’s historic Cathedral Hill
neighborhood and the Southdale area of Edina.
“Aaron Switz, our CEO, and I had both been to the original Yumi as customers and we loved it,” says Anne DeBeau-Melting, COO of Innerbloom Hospitality. “The sushi rolls were delicious, unique and oversized, and that was part of the Yumi tradition that we kept. They are double if not triple the size you would usually see at other sushi restaurants or in the grocery store. We also made sure to keep the signature Yumi Rolls given the importance to the Yumi brand.”
“We feature a wide range of appetizers such as chicken wings, rock shrimp tempura, edamame and miso soup.”
“We don’t want to be a restaurant that somebody can’t enjoy based on a dietary practice, allergen concern, or eating preference, so we offer a gluten-free sushi menu and items that can accommodate most guests and their needs.”
However, since not everyone loves sushi or is always in the mood for it, the expansive four-page menu offers so much more. “We feature a wide range of appetizers such as chicken wings, rock shrimp tempura, edamame and miso soup,” says Anne. “We also serve noodle dishes, other entrée options and more. We don't want to be a restaurant that somebody can't enjoy based on a dietary practice, allergen concern, or eating preference, so we offer a gluten-free sushi menu and items that can accommodate most guests and their needs.”
There are plenty of shared appetizer plates, salads, and all kinds of specialty sashimi platters too. They are always looking to refresh the menu by keeping the favorites and adding some new items for guests to try.
When it comes to cocktails and liquor, Yumi does not disappoint in that area either. “We knew that it would be great to offer guests a Japanese whisky or spirit to pair with their sushi, teriyaki, or nigiri.”
She adds, “We very much enjoyed putting together the Japanese whisky collection for Yumi and appreciate that we have a cocktail menu that uses several Japanese spirits. We were excited to have Ume Plum Whisky in our Yumi Manhattan, which is based on the Umeboshi plum from Japan.”
Every restaurant under Innerbloom’s umbrella offers the best in hospitality, food, cocktails and venue, and Yumi is no exception. When you walk into the Southdale location, the first thing you notice is the large wooden bar with beautifully crafted wooden
stools. There’s also an impressive cathedral wood ceiling over the sushi bar, and the high ceilings combined with the huge windows make it a light and airy space. Across the board, Yumi is a calm, relaxing space that’s great for an everyday casual meal or large holiday celebration. It’s also kid-friendly, offering fun bento boxes full of everything little palates love.
The restaurant is in an area of Edina with a lot of offices and businesses, so it’s convenient to go in and have dinner with coworkers and friends. It’s also nice, after a long day of holiday traditions, to order online, pick up some food, and eat it at home in your cozy pajamas. “Sushi travels well,” says Anne.
While the other two locations are in neighborhoods, this one is situated right outside the Southdale Center Mall, which gets a tremendous amount of foot traffic.“We knew that we would be successful, and with the mall going under a massive renovation over the next two years, we’re excited to be here,” she says.
Yumi written in Japanese characters translates to dedication, freedom, excellence and beauty, and Yumi Japanese Restaurant + Bar embodies all of these wonderful traits. Carrying on the original owner’s legacy is important to Innerbloom. “We continue to work daily to ensure the integrity of the Yumi brand,” says Anne.
To see the full menu, make a reservation and/or order take out from any of the three locations, go to YumiSushiBar.com.

A Rebel Citizen
One Mom's Passion for High-Quality Athleisure Wear
ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE
Nestled in the vibrant community of Edina, Melissa Bang has carved out a niche that beautifully marries passion with practicality. For the past 18 years, Melissa has called Edina home, where she met her husband, fell in love, and raised two active boys, Hudson, nine, and Colton, 13. Both boys are hockey players, and their dad is a dedicated hockey coach, making the Bang household a hub of puck and rink excitement. In this bustling environment, Melissa found herself immersed in the world of youth sports—not just as a spectator but as a creative force seeking innovative ways to spark joy and pride among parents and players alike.
Every hockey season brought one recurring challenge: finding unique, high-quality gear that allowed Melissa to showcase her support for her sons while still feeling stylish and comfortable. After searching high and low with fellow parents for apparel that resonated both on the rink and off—as something comfortable enough to wear to the grocery store—Melissa realized there was a significant gap in the market. Drawing from her professional background in digital and e-commerce marketing, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
Thus, the idea for Rebel Citizen was born on an inspiring road trip to Tennessee. It was there, amidst the scenic views and family discussions, that Melissa envisioned a brand that married functional game day attire with fashionable designs. "I wanted something that leaned into design and fashion because that’s where my passions truly lie," she explains. Without missing a beat, she secured the URL for Rebel Citizen during the drive, setting the wheels in motion for what would soon be a family-based venture.

“I'M PROU D TO MODEL THISFOR MY BO ENCOUR AGE THEM TO PURSUE THEIR
Rebel Citizen officially launched about a year ago, and since then, Melissa has made it a priority to involve her family in the budding business. From assisting with orders to getting essential feedback on men's designs, her husband and sons play an integral role in her entrepreneurial journey. "Everything is a team effort," she says, emphasizing her belief that family involvement enriches the experience and strengthens their bond.
As the creative mind behind the brand, Melissa designs everything herself, pouring her heart into each piece. She outsources the final clothing production but maintains rigorous quality checks to ensure that each garment is something she can be proud of. "I want to create clothing that not only looks good but will also wash well and last," she insists.
The positive feedback from customers validates her efforts, with many expressing their satisfaction with the fun designs and high-quality materials.
Learning has been a significant part of this journey for Melissa. From mastering Adobe Photoshop to taking online courses in web coding and development, she embraces the challenges of entrepreneurship with a sense of adventure. "It’s been fun finding new ways to enhance my skills," she shares, underscoring the growth that comes with pursuing one’s passion.
Most importantly, Melissa’s entrepreneurial spirit has been an enlightening experience for her sons. By showcasing what can be accomplished with creativity and hard work, she hopes to inspire them to explore their own passions and understand the power of dedication. “I'm proud to model this for my boys and encourage them to pursue their own ideas,” she reflects.
For sport-loving families and fashion enthusiasts alike, Rebel Citizen has become a go-to source for apparel that seamlessly transitions from game day to casual outings. Each piece not only celebrates a love for the sport but also embraces the spirit of community—a vibrant reminder of Edina’s rich culture and camaraderie.
For those interested in exploring Melissa's unique offerings, everything is available on the Rebel Citizen website, rebelcitizencompany.com.
As Melissa Bang continues to grow her brand, her dedication to quality, design, and family values stands as a shining example of how passion can transform into a thriving business.

PREPARED FOODS YOU WON’T BE PREPARED FOR
ARTICLE
BY DAVID SCHELLER
Kris and Mary Anne
Middling coleslaw. Lackluster lasagna. Soup that doesn’t evoke strong emotions. A single one of these bland foodstuffs can ruin your day. And heaven forbid if you serve any of them to your guests around Christmastime. Your Great-Granny Gertie would be mortified if your Christmas salsa failed to stir the senses.
If only there were some way to invite every home chef in America to a single potluck, take home all their most inspired dishes, and enjoy them at your leisure … wait! That would actually be a lot like shopping at Kowalski’s Markets. The main difference is that one is an impossible hypothetical scenario, whereas the other is a family-owned grocery chain exclusively serving our Twin Cities, with a location right here in town.
THE CREATION OF TERRI'S TUNA TWIST SALAD
“We’re not expert chefs or high-caliber foodies,” said Kris Kowalski Christiansen, CEO. “We just … eat! And like anyone else who eats, we understand that fresh, quality ingredients are half the battle.”
“The other half is the recipe itself,” added Mary Anne Kowalski, owner. “We’re small compared to the national and regional chains. We don’t do market research. We don’t hire chefs to come up with ideas, either. If we put our name on a baked good, deli item, or Grab & Go entrée, it’s only because we love it.”
“A great recipe can come from anywhere,” continued Kris. “Many of our signature items began as beloved family recipes; for example, we owe our ever-popular potato salad to my own Great-Aunt Nettie. Many more are invented by Rachael Perron, our inestimably talented culinary and branding director. Others originated as chance discoveries, like our almond cookies with brown butter frosting. I fell in love with them at a coffee shop in Montana. After listening to me attempt to describe them, Kristine Schaak and our baking team managed to create an exact copy.
“For now and forever, Kowalski’s will stand for the best groceries and prepared foods in the Twin Cities and the Twin Cities only!”
“Sometimes we happen across a marvelous recipe totally by accident. Take Terri's Tuna Twist Salad, for example. Its creator, Terri Bennis – a close personal friend, who recently retired from the company after working here 30 years – didn’t think it was remotely special when she served it to me one day. She was being too modest, which is a classic Minnesotan trait. But it really and truly was awe-inspiring tuna salad, so I had our kitchen set right to work replicating it.
“At first Terri thought I was joking. When she realized I was serious, she started insisting it couldn’t be done. But now that it’s one of our top sellers, Terri doesn't seem to mind taking credit too much.”
“WE’RE NUMBER TWO!”
“Our grocery store deli was voted second best in the 2024 USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards,” said Mary Anne. “We feel that is an enormous achievement in light of our smaller size. The average number of locations for an honoree in that list is 207. We have 11. We were also recently named fourth best foodservice retailer in the nation by Supermarket News.
“Maybe I’m not being modest enough, but I think we really deserved those accolades. We put so much time, energy and research into everything we serve at our deli. We know and vouch for every ingredient that goes into one of our recipes, too. And because we can’t prepare many of our items in-house, we have several local partners who help us live up to our exceedingly high standards.”
“Those standards are why Kowalski’s will always remain a uniquely Twin Cities affair,” said Kris. “We have spent decades fostering close relationships with our vendors. The thought of doing it all over again in a different market … well, it just doesn’t occur to us, which puts expansion totally out of the question. For now and forever, Kowalski’s will stand for the best groceries and prepared foods in the Twin Cities and the Twin Cities only!”
Don’t alienate your friends and family by serving them anything less than nonpareil goodies this holiday season. Don’t mistreat yourself, either. The food, flower and gift shopping experience you so rightly deserve awaits at 324 Southdale Center, Edina. (952) 697-4200. edina@kowalskis.com.

In business the word “power” gets thrown around a lot – from power brokers and power moves, to power lunches and power players. At Crown Bank the power we value most is the power of possibilities. Getting to know a client’s business is how we discover what ideas are possible, and then marshal the power to bring them to life. It’s how we make the possible, possible.

Making Spirits
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com

ORNAMENT CLUSTERS
SUPPLIES
• 22 gauge wire
• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes
• Wire snips
STEP 1
Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”
STEP 2
Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.
STEP 3
Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.
STEP 4
Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.
STEP 5
Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!
Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!
