Helloooooo spring! Good weather is right around the corner and we are so ready for it. This winter went by surprisingly fast, but I think everyone is ready to embrace sunshine and green.
March is a great time to clean up, clean out and get prepped to play all summer long. If there are some projects you left hanging in 2024, now is a wonderful time to set appointments to get them done and cross them off the list.
March also marks our annual Home & Design Issue, and the Edina Lifestyle Team feels like the lucky ones as we get to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city. We hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. We were excited to talk with Michael Anschel, owner of OA Design + Build on ADUs. ADU stands for Additional Dwelling Unit, and these have become extremely popular around the Twin Cities and beyond. This custom building can house anything from an office, to a game room, man cave, ladies’ space or whatever your heart desires, but it is going to give you an additional option right on your own property.
If spring cleaning is on the list and you don’t want to do it yourself, our team spent time with Real Cleaners and their amazing staff. They take pride in their work and in your home. Experts in residential cleaning, they don’t cut corners or skip little details.
Summer can sometimes bring family and friends into town, and if you’re looking for extra space to house guests, Roxy Rentals provides locally owned and managed properties for rent. Updated, renovated and move-in ready, these parttime stays bring you all the comfort you will need, while serving as your home away from home.
Lastly, we provided some simple décor tips on how to bring tone and texture to a space without a ton of changes.
Cheers to melting snow, warmer temps and a whole lot of sunshine in your lives.

INSIGHTS FROM MICHAEL ANSCHEL, OWNER OF OA
DESIGN+BUILD+ARCHITECTURE

DESIGN+BUILD+ARCHITECTURE
In the realm of modern living, the concept of multi-generational households is gaining traction, particularly in the United States. For decades, the prevailing belief has been that children leave home to start their own independent lives, often leading to a disconnect from extended family. However, as societal dynamics evolve, so does the appreciation for close-knit living arrangements. Michael Anschel, owner of OA Design+Build+Architecture, sheds light on this shift, emphasizing the importance of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and accessory structures as viable solutions for families wanting to stay together while maintaining individual autonomy.
ADUs serve as flexible living spaces, enabling families to accommodate their needs creatively. Unlike traditional single-family homes, ADUs allow for extra rooms—fostering multi-generational living. As Anschel notes, “In many cultures around the world, having three generations under one roof is a norm. This new trend in the U.S. is a step towards embracing that reality.”
Cities, such as Minneapolis, have recognized the significance of ADUs and are making strides to support their development. By easing restrictions on size, layout, and attachment, municipalities are paving the way for families to explore their housing options. “The shift we’re seeing is a response to rising housing costs and the desire for families to stay connected without sacrificing personal space,” Anschel explains.
The typical ADU, often ranging from 300 to 500 square feet, can accommodate essential living features such as a kitchenette, bedroom, and bathroom—providing a comfortable way of life. Whether attached to the main dwelling or nestled in the backyard, these units are designed to blend seamlessly into the family setting. However, it's essential for homeowners to seek architects familiar with local building codes to navigate the various regulations effectively.
While the cost for an ADU starts at $350,000, the average hovers around $425,000-$450,000, and can easily exceed $550,000 depending on fit and finish. Although pricing may

surprise some, it represents an investment in togetherness. For families, this means parents can remain close to their adult children or grandparents can live comfortably without being placed in care facilities. “The beauty of ADUs goes beyond functionality; they are carefully crafted homes that can be beautifully designed and furnished,” Anschel says, highlighting their potential.
In addition to ADUs, the concept of accessory structures has gained momentum, offering a range of flexible spaces that don’t require plumbing or full residential capabilities. These structures can function as home offices, yoga studios, or workout rooms—providing necessary separation while keeping families close. With costs ranging from $275,000 to $350,000, accessory structures present an economical alternative to traditional ADUs and can serve as a stopgap solution until the need arises for a complete dwelling.
Notably, Anschel’s firm has developed a template that fits standard city lots, allowing for customization without the hefty design costs typically associated with custom builds. This approach ensures that homeowners can enjoy a streamlined development process while contributing to their family’s multi-generational lifestyle.
As we look to the future, the continued rise of ADUs and accessory structures symbolizes a cultural shift towards embracing the benefits of close-knit families. By prioritizing family connection amidst the challenges of modern life, we can create spaces that foster relationships, support aging parents, and keep children close to their roots. As Michael Anschel aptly concludes, “ADUs are not merely a trend; they are an evolution in how we live and connect as families.”

JJ Hornig’s journey from the bustling streets of New York City to the tranquil neighborhoods of Minnesota is a tale steeped in creativity and perseverance. Growing up on Long Island and spending over two decades in NYC, Janine always had a flair for public relations and a passion for hospitality. In 2012, as her love for travel blossomed, she began renting out her apartment whenever she was away. This side venture opened her eyes to the potential of the short-term rental market, planting the seeds for what would eventually become her thriving business—Roxy Rentals.
After meeting her husband, who expressed a desire to return to his Midwest roots, Janine made the leap to Minnesota at the end of 2019. As they settled in, they began acquiring various properties, each with its own story and character. Rather than sell them, they decided to embrace the potential of the Airbnb-model, transforming their spaces into welcoming havens for traveling guests. “What sets us apart in this over-saturated market is our deep understanding of hospitality,” Janine explains. “It’s not just about providing a place to sleep; it’s about creating memorable experiences for our guests.”
From the moment a traveler visits the Roxy Rentals website, their experience is designed to be seamless and userfriendly. Janine and her team have meticulously crafted an easy reservation process, ensuring that guests can book their stay without confusion. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with thoughtful touches like welcome gifts and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages, creating an immediate sense of comfort. “We think of every situation,” Janine notes, “like providing quick meals for families arriving late at night. It’s all about anticipating needs and going the extra mile.”
The couple’s path wasn’t without its challenges. Moving to different locations, renovating properties, and navigating local regulations took hard work and adaptability. Their journey included a stint in Stillwater, where they encountered unexpected hurdles with licensing for shortterm rentals. Rather than deter them, these challenges inspired them to integrate more deeply into the community, ensuring that they aligned with local legislation while still offering top-notch guest experiences. Roxy Rentals became official in 2021.
Fast forward to today, Roxy Rentals has blossomed into a portfolio of eight distinct properties, each radiating the spirit of home. Janine prides herself on the artistry and craftsmanship found within the properties, often collaborating with local artisans and furniture makers to create uniquely curated environments. “We want our guests to feel that this isn’t just a place to stay; it’s their second home,” she declares.
Janine continues, “We also now offer special amenities, designed to elevate every moment of a stay. These include: professional photography sessions, chef-prepared gourmet meals, stylist and makeup artist appointments, early check-in or late check-out, a fully stocked fridge, and baby gear rentals. Each amenity can be selected and customized during booking.”
The name “Roxy Rentals” came to life serendipitously—a moment of inspiration struck when their dog, Roxy, ambled into the room during a brainstorming session for their LLC name. “It felt perfect. Roxy represents comfort and warmth, qualities we infuse into every rental,” Janine shares.
As Janine reflects on their journey—navigating the intricacies of property management, partnering with local artists, and investing in memorable guest experiences—she emphasizes the importance of community, creativity, and resilience. “We’ve moved five times in three years, and it’s been a whirlwind, but every challenge has only fueled our determination to create something beautiful with Roxy Rentals.”

Talia’s journey began with a desire to reflect the values she holds dear—care and community. As a mom and a business owner, she leads her team with the ethos that a clean home is more than just an aesthetic choice; it’s a foundation for peace and productivity. Real Cleaners caters to residential clients and realtors, tackling everything from deep cleans to ongoing maintenance, all while ensuring the process is tailored to each client’s unique needs. Talia's motto, “Let us show you the difference,” encapsulates the core mission: to provide cleaning solutions that truly make an impact on people's lives.
Central to the Real Cleaners experience is a personalized approach that begins with a 15-minute walkthrough of the home. This isn't just a formality—it's a crucial step in ensuring that all priorities are acknowledged and met. Whether it’s tackling dust in hard-to-reach corners or utilizing specific non-toxic products, every task is executed with the utmost care.
TALIA’S MOTTO, “LET US SHOW YOU THE DIFFERENCE,” ENCAPSULATES THE CORE MISSION: TO PROVIDE CLEANING
THAT TRULY MAKE AN IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S LIVES.
The team at Real Cleaners currently consists of six dedicated employees who share Talia’s vision for positivity. In an industry often laden with stress, it’s refreshing to see a culture grounded in upbeat communication and supportive teamwork. Talia fosters an environment where everyone holds each other accountable, ensuring that frustrations are transformed into constructive feedback, and worries are met with solutions. “It’s hard to not have a good day when we’re all with each other,” Talia often says, showcasing the infectious enthusiasm within her team.
One of the most rewarding experiences for the team at Real Cleaners came when
they were approached by a young family struggling with their new, much larger home. Feeling overwhelmed, the couple reached out to Talia, sharing their distress over managing the household with three small children. Answering the call for help, the team performed a deep clean that not only transformed their space but lifted the emotional weight from their shoulders. The gratitude poured in as the family called Talia in happy tears, expressing how invigorating and life-altering the service had been. “It’s a game changer,” Talia reflects, emphasizing the relief that comes with having a thoroughly cleaned home amidst the chaos of life.
Beyond regular cleaning services, Real Cleaners also embraces a spirit of community service. Talia recalls a heartwarming moment when she decided to extend help to a young mom in desperate need of cleaning assistance but lacking the funds to hire professionals. Understanding the burden of household management, Talia and her team volunteered their time and resources to deliver a thorough clean, demonstrating that true care extends beyond mere transactions.
As Real Cleaners rapidly grows and seeks to expand its operations, Talia dreamily envisions initiatives that involve nominating families in need through social media, granting deserving households a chance to experience the relief of a free clean each month. This commitment to community not only strengthens relationships with clients but also enriches the team’s sense of purpose.
At Real Cleaners, the vision transcends cleanliness; it’s about nurturing relationships and creating serene spaces where families can thrive. Talia Bartley and her skilled staff pour their hearts into every cleaning, ensuring that every corner sparkles with love and dedication. As families seek serene havens amidst life’s storms, Real Cleaners stands ready to offer not just pristine homes but also the comfort and peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re cared for.

STYLE YOUR HOME IN TONES AND TEXTURES WITH DESIGN HELP FROM HOUZZ INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERTS
ARTICLE BY NICOLETTE MARTIN
Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”
Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”
Do you feel like your all-white room is missing something? Houzz contributor Kelly Porter bets what’s missing is energy.
“The best way to add a spark to any space,” she says, “is with bright color.”
Kelly says green is one of the easiest colors to live with, looking organic even in its more vivid tones.
“When searching for the perfect bright green, think springtime—fresh green grass and newly sprouted leaves,” she says. “These greens have lively undertones that will look comfortable and warm in your white space.
Other colors Kelly recommends adding as accents are yellow, royal blue, orange, bluepurple, red-purple and sky blue.
