NEW HOME DESIGN RENOVATIONS KITCHEN + BATH

March 2025 Publishers Letter

Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable.

Author Wendy Wunder said, "The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back." As we thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people.

We feel like the lucky ones as we got to learn more about the businesses and individuals that comprise this city and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, neighborhood and most of all - your home.

Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

Happy March!

MY FAVORITE Spots

A Personal Tour of Some of the Best Places in Town

ARTICLE BY JACLYN GAILHARD PICARILLO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARIUSZ TEREPKA PHOTOGRAPHY

Fairfield… I never thought I would become one, but today, I proudly say I am a “Townie.” I feel very lucky to have grown-up in Fairfield and my husband and I feel beyond grateful to raise our girls in this exceptional town. It’s a place that blends beauty, history, foward-thinking and community and I am so fortunate to live, and sell real estate in the very neighborhoods that make this town so phenomenal. What truly sets Fairfield apart for me are the people. I am blessed to have friends and neighbors with kind hearts, strong values, and a shared sense of community. That deep connection makes it easy to share my enthusiasm for Fairfield when I’m showing clients the stunning homes and picturesque hot spots that define this area.

BEAUTY IS ALL AROUND

When introducing clients to Fairfield, I like to bring them to some of the most scenic and treasured spots:

• Southport : Southport is where the glory of the waterfront is on full display. The charm of the Harbor, historic streets lined with pristine antiques, and breathtaking gardens make this area unlike any other. Small mom-and-pop shops, high-end dining (L’escale and Paci), as well as casual options (Gray Goose), markets (Spic and Span) and of course a local watering hole (the Horseshoe, known to fellow townies as “The Shoe”) plus cute boutiques add to the village’s appeal.

Southport embodies Fairfield’s elegance and history, wrapped in a coastal atmosphere that’s impossible to resist.

• Greenfield Hill: The Greenfield Hill neighborhood, centered around Greenfield Hill Congregational Church, is like stepping back in time. Many of the homes are beautifully preserved estates and turnkey antiques that homeowners proudly maintain. The iconic Dogwoods and massive Copper Beech trees are landmarks, especially in spring when everything is blooming. There is a calm, timeless beauty in this neighborhood with another quaint shopping center.

• Downtown and the Beach Area: Fairfield’s downtown area is always bustling with energy. It’s a nice mix of boutique shops (La Moda, The Beehive, Snappy Gator, Marea, BoHo Prep) and national storefronts. The restaurants are delicious (Martel, Nordic Fish, Quatro Pazzi, The Chelsea, Bodega, and Mecha Noodle are just a few of my favorites). Pre-teens and teens love meeting downtown to shop (Olive My Stuff, Apricot Lane, and Caio Bella) followed by a trip to Starbucks, Saugatuck Sweets, or 16 Handles (sometimes going to all three). The Beach Area is just a short drive past town and I always have fun showing the gorgeous new construction and well-maintained older homes that are all walking distance to our fun public beaches. The area is elevated but always laid back.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Fairfield offers a fulfilling lifestyle, striking the perfect balance between small-town America and big city allure. With over 63,000 residents and a median age of 41, there is truly something for everyone. There are great town amenities, senior center, night life, 2 Universities, a movie theater, parks, multiple libraries, Farmer’s and pop-up markets, small businesses and national brand headquarters.

• Go-to Spots: I love the cute markets and boutiques where the owners and employees know you by name. Spic and Span Market, The Pantry, La Moda, Henry C. Reid Jewelers, BeeHive, Boho Prep and Outdoor & Design are just a few of my favorites.

• Community Spirit: Fairfield’s philanthropic heart shines through charity events like the Near & Far Aid Designer House Tour, Southport Garden Stroll, and the Turkey Trot. Adults, teens, and children unite to volunteer, participate, and inspire.

• Entrepreneurial Energy: Fairfield nurtures local businesses and startups from creative ventures like Floraco clean products and Haute Energy jewelry to printing shops like andHowGraphics. I love supporting and learning about my fellow residents’ diverse backgrounds and passions.

FEELS LIKE HOME

“I am proud to be a part of this town and will always share its unique and fabulous features with anyone interested in exploring it. ”

•    Access & Proximity: Fairfield has three train stations. When you feel like a change of scenery, you’re an easy ride away to Manhattan or New Haven. With five public beaches - each with its own personality, lakes and countless nature trails (Mill River, Lake Mohegan, Audubon), Fairfield offers endless opportunities to unwind in nature. A spontaneous visit to Southport Beach is one of my favorite ways to pause, reflect, and re-energize and floating down Pine Creek is the most fun (IYKYK)!

From the scenic drives down Pequot Avenue and Sasco Hill Road to the meandering rivers, storybook meadows and open space, Fairfield offers beauty in every corner. Late Spring and mid Fall are my favorite times of year here. Spring brings excitement, warmer temps, gorgeous blooms (the busy real estate season! ), happy neighbors out walking and biking. Fall brings the crisp air, the beauty of the changing leaves and the most vibrant sunset skies over Long Island Sound. It’s magical here. It’s a place that feels alive with promise.

My enthusiasm for Fairfield continues to grow as our town evolves and improves. With its boundless potential and community devotion, I am confident that Fairfield’s best days are still ahead. I am proud to be a part of this town and will always share its unique and fabulous features with anyone interested in exploring it. Fairfield is not just my home; it’s where my heart is.

Fairfield Family Health, a multi-disciplinary medical clinic, specialized in integrative medicine, has many alternatives to care to prepare you for the spring season. These services include sublingual immunotherapy (desensitization allergy drops under the tongue), low dose allergen (broad based mixture of allergens), natural anti-histamine supplements and, as requested, IV drip therapy.

Take A Look Inside with Shelter Interiors

Gimme Shelter

Carolyn Kron and Tricia Izzo, the duo behind Shelter Interiors, offer a glimpse into how their friendship has evolved into the perfect design partnership. Take a peek into their Guilford project, a beautifully renovated home. What began as a simple bathroom overhaul quickly expanded into a comprehensive redesign, creating spaces for the entire family to enjoy. Their delighted clients summed it up best: “The outcome was more than we ever could have imagined, and we are beyond thrilled with the final result!”

FLM: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELVES AND HOW SHELTER INTERIORS BEGAN.

Tricia: I earned my degree in Interior Design and have been working in the field ever since. Carolyn and I started at a commercial furniture dealer, where we gained invaluable experience and made a lasting friendship. After moving on to architecture firms, we sought more freedom to create our own designs and spend more time with our families. Carolyn suggested we start our own company. A major project for Wusthof and a dream build in Darien launched our journey, and we’ve been designing together ever since.

Carolyn: We would go to lunch every day at work together and became great friends. After nearly 10 years of working for different companies, we decided to start our own design company. We started Shelter in 2007 and have never looked back. We are so lucky to have worked together on a wide variety of residential and commercial projects.

FLM: HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE ESSENCE OF SHELTER INTERIORS?

Tricia: We are an interior architecture and design firm specializing in construction projects. We create construction drawing sets and provide project management and material selections for home renovations and commercial offices. We have been lucky enough to have created homes, workspaces and restaurants for many people over the years.

“It is not common to have a design partnership like ours. It’s always truly a team effort and an advantage for our clients.”

Carolyn: We love having a mix of projects. Tricia and I love to get in right when a project is starting. It gives us the opportunity to review the layout, whether it is a kitchen or bath remodel or new build. We have worked on many commercial interior projects and want to ensure the design is exactly what our client needs to be efficient at work or in the kitchen. In addition to prioritizing efficient layouts, we provide full construction documents for both commercial and residential projects. Shelter makes all the necessary selections, including cabinets, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, window treatments and furniture.

FLM: HOW HAS YOUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY DEVELOPED INTO THE FOUNDATION OF SHELTER INTERIORS?

Tricia: We have always described ourselves as Coastal Modern. We are inspired by the colors and textures found

along the coastline. We love things to be beautiful but also practical and functional. It is not common to have a design partnership like ours. It’s always truly a team effort and an advantage for our clients. Over the years, we have developed a sixth sense about what the other is going to think about design decisions.

Carolyn: We love the collaboration process! We understand each other’s perspectives while also aligning with our clients’ vision. Coastal Modern design lets us incorporate natural materials and colors, seamlessly blending the indoors with the outdoors.

FLM: WHAT WERE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE GUILFORD PROJECT?

Tricia: The owners wanted the house to finally feel like they had an adult home. So many of us can relate to that. You start

“We

always try to look at the project from a whole house standpoint and suggest layouts that work both functionally and aesthetically.”

Carolyn: Tricia and I immediately saw how the large walk-out basement could be designed to give the family of 5 an entertaining space. While we started designing a brand new bathroom, we quickly realized how a kitchenette in the basement would give the family enjoyment in the summer. We spent 3 years working on this project due to Covid delaying so many materials and fixtures but it was a great opportunity to really get to know the family.

FLM: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THIS PROJECT?

out with hand-me-downs or cheap Scandinavian pieces and once you can finally afford the things you want, you have no idea what you actually like. So, as the design process went on, rooms kept getting added to our scope of work until we finally changed most of the home’s living spaces. We always try to look at the project from a whole house standpoint and suggest layouts that work both functionally and aesthetically. Once we have a plan, we pull together a few material and fixture schemes and revise them until we have a winner.

Tricia: Honestly getting to know the family! We spend so much time with clients that we really get attached to them. But design-wise, I want that poolside kitchen and bathroom at my house. I love the colors and textures so much. It feels like a vacation!

Carolyn: My favorite spot is the primary bathroom. I love a steam shower. But mostly, the time we spent with the family was fantastic; we were so lucky.  Shelter Interiors  203-341-9535 shelterinteriorsllc.com

Jill Rae Designs

Solving the Creative Puzzle

After years of working in corporate America and facing an impending job relocation, Ridgefield resident Jill Rae decided it was time for a change. With a strong business background, entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for design and renovation, Jill launched Jill Rae Designs, a full-service interior design firm specializing in creating dream homes across Fairfield County. “We cater to homeowners looking to upgrade, renovate, or build from the ground up,” says Jill, Owner and Principal Designer.

Photo by New Light Creative Services

At Jill Rae Designs, the team focuses on creating spaces that juxtapose form and function, with an emphasis on integrating artistic sensibility with a comfortable, real-life ease. “Our philosophy is simple: Your home should feel like you,” Jill explains.

“We believe in blending style, comfort, and functionality to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also livable.” Taking cues from nature, Jill and her team incorporate earth tones, organic textures, and calming elements that ground a space. “I also love drawing inspiration from the fashion world,” Jill adds. “Whether it’s playing with patterns, sleek lines, or bold pops of color, I love using color in unexpected ways. Layering in textures creates spaces that feel thoughtfully designed—not sterile and cookie-cutter.”

Jill’s approach to design is centered around originality. “Having projects look the same just isn’t my thing,” she says. Jill strives to make each project unique, avoiding trends that feel overly familiar, like all-white or gray kitchens. “I like to challenge myself and add excitement to every design.” Jill finds nothing more exciting than stepping into a space and discovering its endless possibilities. “It’s like solving a creative puzzle—finding ways to make a room not just beautiful, but also highly practical and perfectly aligned with how you live. This is especially true in kitchen projects, where the challenge is to ask: How can we enhance this space? What needs improvement? Can we creatively reconfigure or repurpose space from other areas to maximize its potential?”

Although Jill Rae Designs is a leading tastemaker, what truly sets them apart is their personalized approach and the strong relationships they build with their clients. The design process begins with getting to know the families, understanding how they’ll use their spaces, and gathering key insights through a detailed questionnaire. They learn about their lifestyle, preferences, dislikes, and what they’ve always dreamed of having in their home. Says Jill, “Home renovations are personal, and we take a deep dive into our clients’ lives.” Jill and her team ensure that collaboration and communication are at the forefront of every project, no matter the size. They work to create a stress-free atmosphere, making the process fun and smooth. “We present a conceptual design, discuss any changes, and make sure we have a solid understanding of their vision before moving forward,” Jill explains.

The team is excited about a range of new projects this year, from ground-up constructions to room renovations. One project close to their hearts is a collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. Jill and her team are working with other local professionals to build a new home for a family in Fairfield County. “We’ll be fundraising for the project, with the goal of presenting the family with a net-zero mortgage,” Jill says. “I know we’ll get there!”

For Jill, the most rewarding aspect of her work is transforming houses into cherished spaces for families. In an ever-evolving industry, it’s the people—the clients, communities, and neighbors—who bring true meaning to her craft. The joy on her clients’ faces when they see their vision brought to life is what drives her and her team’s passion for creating homes they truly love.

COASTAL Cool

GLDESIGN’s Elevated Beach Vibes and Effortless Style

Influencer, Designer, Lifestyle Expert and all-around Cool-girl Gaelle Dudley is the dynamic Founder and Creative Director of GLDESIGN, a full-service residential and commercial interior design firm based in Fairfield. Gaelle and her team craft elevated coastal spaces that feel sun-kissed. GLDESIGN deftly merges luxe beach beauty with carefree functionality, earning a reputation for creating interiors that are both exquisite and effortless. Noted for her distinct aesthetic, Gaelle draws inspiration from her favorite places. “The coast is never far from the heart of any GLDESIGN project and derives from my French upbringing, time spent along New England shorelines and love of the California coast.  My philosophy is laid back, beautiful living.”

Among the many hats Gaelle wears, she is a nationally recognized color expert—a distinction that comes as no surprise. Her popular social media platforms are filled with daily posts where fans frequently seek her advice on paint choices, further highlighting her expertise. This recently culminated in the highly anticipated paint collaboration with Ring’s End, A La Plage, a collection of 14 perfect hues that embody the GLDESIGN signature coastal palette. Always ahead of the curve, Gaelle steers clear of fleeting trends, preferring to set her own path. While the team anticipates a shift towards deeper color palettes, they remain steadfast in their commitment to a light and airy aesthetic. “I love the soft blue tones for kitchens and the warmth of textured walls in dining rooms,” Gaelle shares. “We recently completed a limewash project using Ocean Bluffs, the most popular hue from our A La Plage collection, and the result was breathtaking. I think paint is the perfect opportunity to evoke emotion when walking into a home. Whether you go bold, apply texture or choose minimalism - make it intentional!”

Another partnership close to her heart is a line of home scents inspired by that quintessential GLDESIGN style, created in collaboration with botanical expert Kerry Gale of Floraco, “The Soleil collection was created from my desire for endless summers, Gaelle explains.  I wanted our customers to be able to close their eyes, take a deep breath and feel instantly transported to their happy place.” Joining forces with another female-owned brand has been a dream come true for Gaelle.

Becoming a leader in the design and lifestyle space stands as one of Gaelle’s most significant accomplishments. “I know my dad is looking down from Heaven, proud of the entrepreneur I’ve always aspired to be, and that fills my soul,” she reflects. Gaelle attributes the success of GLDESIGN to her remarkable team of dedicated women, whose hard work and passion are the foundation of their achievements. The talents and spirit of GLDESIGN are vividly reflected in Gaelle’s heartfelt Instagram posts, where her authenticity shines through in both the interiors she creates as well as the life she has designed.
