What does this season mean for you? For many in the Southeast, it is a time when students scramble to finish their summer work. Teachers hold on to those last days of reverie. And young parents make their last drives from summer camps. For some, the thought of starting a new school year brings a sense of fear. In others, excitement. Whatever memories you had of going back to school, there is no doubt it has had an impact on your life today. As we reflect on school, we often remember the teachers, students, and fellow classmates, that have made an indelible impression on us. As one local teacher makes her bid for state Teacher of the Year, she reflects with us on what makes her job one of the most rewarding parts of her life. School happens outside of the conventional four walls as well, and true magic happens in the great outdoors. The Southern Conservation Trust discusses its education efforts as it preserves much of the natural beauty Fayette County possesses. We highlight our local library's successes, and things you may not know that we hope you take advantage of this year. Fayette, I hope you have an exceptional start to the school year.

The first time audiences saw the ballet, as it is an original staged by Sherri Davis, Director of Georgia Academy of Dance in Peachtree City. Davis had been working on this project for over two years. The final product was simply amazing, and met with rave reviews by audience members. Based on the Charlotte Bronte novel, Jane Eyre is the redemptive story of friendship and true love. It was performed at the Coweta Performing Arts Center. At the Legacy Theater in Tyrone, Fayette residents got to experience the award-winning musical Mary Poppins. We look forward to more incredible performances to come this season!

RIDGE NATURE AREA (CON TI N U ED)

DEVELOPMENT OF THE RIDGE

The Ridge is designated as public and was acquired by the City of Fayetteville to prevent a subdivision development from consuming the expansive greenspace. After years of efforts to create a park, the City engaged Southern Conservation Trust to create and manage the land as a passive public use nature area. The Ridge Master Vision Plan was created with amenities to be implemented as community support allowed. The plan includes many opportunities not currently found in Fayette County. In the last four years, volunteers have helped the Nature Area reach several milestones. Almost six miles of multi-use paths have been cleared and marked; a primitive scout camp has been developed which includes camping facilities, an outdoor kitchen, latrine, and camp fire gathering area; and the first phase of a seven-and-a-halfmile water trail for kayaking/canoeing is underway. More than a dozen Boy Scout and Girl Scout projects have led to the development of kiosks, seating areas, bridges, bat houses, and restoration projects. Infrastructure has also been put into place for "orienteering" and "geocaching." A monthly bird count reveals increasing bird activity and nesting and migration patterns. A Clayton State University multi-year study on box turtles has resulted in the discovery of one of the largest concentration of box turtles in the country. "The Ridge is a jewel in the heart of Fayette County, which is unique among the many public nature preserves in the Atlanta Metro Area," said Tami Morris, Southern Conservation Trust board chair. "The Ridge is notable for its size and diversity of activities but, most importantly, for the community support which has resulted in quality and thoughtful amenities." Ray Gibson, Fayetteville City Manager, notes that the city and council are excited about the opening of The Ridge and the impact it will have in Fayetteville and beyond. “We are thrilled to have SCT as a partner in creating a unique community asset for our community. Their leadership is providing our community with unique outdoor opportunities as well as contributing to a thriving, sustainable community for future generations,” said Gibson. "SCT does much for our community to educate, protect our environment and provide recreational resources.” The City of Fayetteville and Southern Conservation Trust’s primary goal is to offer the community an outdoor environment where they can appreciate nature, engage in healthy outdoor activities and CONTINUED > be introduced to environmental stewardship.

RIDGE NATURE AREA (CON TI N U ED)

PARTNERSHIPS KEY TO SUCCESS

More than 20 community partners have donated time, resources, materials and money to make The Ridge a reality, according to SCT Executive Director Pam Young. More than 398 volunteers and community groups have helped to blaze 5.7 miles of multi-use, mountain biking and hiking trails. Basic infrastructure is being added but will impact less than 3% of the 308 acre parcel. Southern Conservation Trust is privileged to have such an array of partners, volunteers and contributors, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Southside Cycling Club, Brent Scarbrough & Company, C & C Fencing, MEJA Construction, Integrated Science and Engineering, Clothes Less Traveled Thrift Shop, The Flint Riverkeeper, and Georgia River Network to name a few. It is only with the support of our partners that SCT was able to explore such a huge undertaking. RICH HISTORY

Exploring the history of The Ridge provides insights into the life cycle of land and human interaction over many millennia. Located within the Piedmont region habitat, the land has been subject to modification by humans for more than 10,000 years. Agricultural practices and natural phenomena (such as fire and flooding) have shaped a rich biosphere with diverse plants and animal species that have adapted to these practices. But while The Ridge currently appears to be an undisturbed area, the history of the land tells a different tale. More than 200 of the 308 acres of the non-wetland area was clear cut in the 1820’s and farmed until the mid-1960’s, with only a few patches remaining of “old growth” trees and/or vegetation. These farm plots have slowly recovered as forest but with little diversity and a large concentration of invasive species. The conservation plan for The Ridge calls for various projects to focus on increasing diversity and rehabilitating or reintroducing CONTINUED > native plants and wildlife habitats.

RIDGE NATURE AREA (CON TI N U ED)

REHABILITATING NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS

Ethan Boos of Troop 118 began the process of increasing the biodiversity of The Ridge in conjunction with his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, a nine month service project. Over 250 volunteer hours, he and his team gathered and recycled 1150 pounds of scrap metal, 64 tires and disposed of 800 pounds of trash. The cleared brush was placed in small piles to create habitat shelter for wildlife. Other projects have made a huge impact as well. Girl Scout Gold Award projects have resulted in turtle shelters in a dedicated area provided by Camille Norman and bat houses installed by Jorie Thuron, all intended as habitat restoration and to reintroduce various wildlife into the nature area. Volunteers conduct monthly bird species and assessment. The Georgia Extension Agency and Master Gardeners have provided guidance to several scout award and troop projects to increase the biological diversity of plant life at The Ridge.. These projects include preserving found specialty plants and transplanting them into environmentally appropriate areas. Some of the found plants include Swamp Mallow, Carolina Spider Lilies and non-native orchids. ABOUT THE SOUTHERN CONSERVATION TRUST

Southern Conservation Trust is a local nonprofit conservation organization that owns, manages and protects more than 2400 acres of environmentally sensitive land for recreation, water quality protection, wildlife habitat and environmental education. The Trust is the only accredited, community land trust focused on protecting farms, woodlands and environmentally sensitive land in Metro Atlanta’s Southern Crescent and the Upper Flint and Middle Chattahoochee River basins. The Trust also works with willing property owners to protect their land with a conservation easement that may provide significant tax benefits. The Trust provides passive recreation to more than 30,000 residents annually. By managing public preserves, SCT ensures that families, adults and the greater community may enjoy the wonder and relaxation of nature walks, the excitement of engaging a child in a teachable moment or creating lasting memories of a family picnic, fishing or seeing an animal one might not normally encounter. "Too often our children stay indoors, missing the chance to establish a healthy lifestyle through outdoor fun. Ensuring they have opportunities to hike, smell the freshness after a warm summer rain or witness animals in their natural habitat is paramount,” stresses Young. Providing opportunities for our community to engage and connect with nature is solely supported through contributed revenue, from grants and private and corporate support. Community support is vital to the Trust’s continued efforts to impact the community and ensure future generations inherit a thriving, sustainable greater community. If you or your business would like to support the Southern Conservation Trust's efforts, visit www.SCTLandTrust.org.

Under the direction of Christeen Snell, and with the help of its awesome staff, the library has become known as both a quiet local study spot and a robust home for incredible global talent and expertise. HISTORY

In 1969, the Fayette County Public Library was a single 1,000-squarefoot facility on Lee Street. With the help of special use local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds, the county constructed a 28,000-squarefoot facility on Heritage Park Way. Resource-sharing in a consortium has allowed the library to expand its services. In 1970, Fayette’s library joined the Flint River Regional Library System, and would later become one of the original facilities to house the PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services) system in the late 90s. In 2012, 5,220 square feet were added to enhance the library experience for patrons.

teachers

embarked on an educational tour to learn how to integrate art into the STEM concept, to produce an enriched STEAM curriculum. During the month of June, the K-12 teachers visited leaders from TDK, Panasonic, Fayette Piedmont Hospital, and the High Museum of Art. Their goal? To create lesson plans with 21st century components that include creativity, collaboration, cooperation and communication. “The idea is that STEAM is going to be an expectation in the county, because we know we’ve got to build worldwide citizens,” says Roberta Haren, a teacher at Fayetteville Elementary School. Observing the STEAM concepts in the real-world business environments helped teachers better understand how to equip their students. “We have got to get these kids ready, not just academically, but they need to have skills … perseverance, dedication to detail,” Roberta adds. What exactly does it mean to enact a STEAM model? It means incorporating artistic elements into all facets of learning, on all grade levels. “You can almost pull child-driven lessons that play to everybody’s strength,” notes Jeff Angelo, a teacher at Spring Hill Elementary School. “It’s not just the readers who are doing well, but the one who is musical, the one who’s artistic, the one who knows how to build, (and the one) that understands processes,” he notes. Adding art to STEM allows the STEAM curriculum to engage students in experiential learning, where they embrace creativity and working together as a team; components some say were missing from previous STEM objectives. The businesses sought to take what was written on paper, and create realistic examples for the teachers to observe. The educators received an education – one which business leaders say will be beneficial for all parties. “In addition to learning about the creative careers at the museum, teachers also went through a STEAM interactive workshop, as if they were the students. They had to work together, problem solve, and come up with a solution to a complex problem,” explains Kate McLeod, Head of School and Teacher Services at the High Museum of Art. Elements of the STEAM curriculum will start this school year. In fact, many teachers have already figured innovative ways to make

STEAM come alive for their students. Some students will tackle the expense of constantly refilling the Atlanta Ocean Wave Pool at Six Flags White Water, by developing a pool cover that will prevent evaporation. Others will study vibration, pitch and volume, by creating their own rock band, complete with stringed instruments and a drum. Teachers are generating ideas that are unique, interactive and engaging. “I think all of the lessons are just making learning fun,” states Amanda Young, a teacher at Spring Hill Elementary School. “Collaboration is key. They’re going to have to work together, they’re going to have hands on (experience).” She continues, “It’s not like we’re spoon-feeding them. They can’t go somewhere and read what the answer is. They are like their own little engineer.” She and other teachers hope real world applications will help students see the value in their educational experiences, as well as prepare them for the future. “I am hopeful that by being a part of the STEAM program we can help educate this community on what services and jobs are available close to home,” notes Catherine Hoffman, Operations Manager for Radiation Oncology at Piedmont Fayette Hospital. “Having a broader knowledge of diverse jobs is essential in finding the right career path.” And these local business partners, as well as the teachers, plan to help the students do just that. Catherine concludes, “We can prepare our upcoming generations to succeed in rewarding professions for years to come.” 32

TEACHER OF THE YEAR

(CON TI N U ED)

From Suzette's Students: Interview with Ashanti Griggs How has Mrs. Weinhardt impacted your life? Mrs. Weinhardt showed a tremendous amount of compassion towards her students and I can truly say that she has impacted my life. I am so fortunate to have had Mrs. Weinhardt as my Pre-Calculus teacher my senior year. I heard through my older peers that Pre-Calculus was not an easy course and soon could relate to the difficulties that they mentioned; however, as a result of having a phenomenal teacher, I was able to succeed. She really is the bomb dot com! Everyday I looked forward to going to my 3rd period class and I think she looked forward to us. Some of my classmates and I began to call her Mama Dub because we saw that she cared for us like we were her own children. Along her walls she has her previous students' college pennants hanging up and throughout the year she would tell us stories about some of them. I could not wait to get my Mercer University pennant to her so she could put it up like she did for her former students. That way I know she will never forget about me, even though I like to think that I’m one of her favorite students.
