ow that I have your attention, let me just tell you—I love the great outdoors. Actually I don’t. Unless the great outdoors involves a stocked RV that looks like a penthouse on wheels, fully equipped with satellite TV, awesome food, a hot shower with body sprays, a Big Green Egg, comfy bed…you see where I’m going here? I actually wouldn’t mind the great outdoors—camping, hunting, swimming in the lake—as long as I could come back to that fully outfitted behemoth. What I truly love is the great indoors. While in the great indoors I'm able to watch the great outdoorsy (I know that’s not a word—it’s a Michelleism) sports, like football! Football Productions Photography is what I live and die for. I get excited in August when pre-season rolls around and then when September hits I think, "there is a God." Whether you’re the indoor or outdoor type, we’ve got some great things for you in this issue. If you thought you were the daredevil type, wait until you read about Darius Glover, daredevil extraordinaire. You’ll learn there’s a little something special about him in that piece. Campers, be sure to check out the piece for tips on your next camping trip. And, CALLING ALL MEN! Be sure to peruse the Ultimate Man Cave piece. You wanted a man cave, you got one! Bonus: it’s beer time! Learn more about a local successful growler shop right here in Fayette County. Now its time for me to go get settled in for a great football season. I’m going to grab a growler and saddle up. I look forward to seeing you next month! Feel free to reach out anytime at Michelle.Willis@lifestylepubs.com. A bientôt, Fayette!

Invest Early and Wisely for College WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP MEET THE HIGH COSTS OF HIGHER EDUCATION? PROVIDED BY LAURA DZWIGALSKI

S

chool is back in session. If you have school-age children, you’re probably busy getting them acclimated to another year of hitting the books. But the school years go by quickly, so it won’t be long before your kids are ready to head off to college. Will you be financially prepared to help them? It’s certainly a challenge, especially given rising costs of higher education. Consider these figures from the College Board: For the 2011-2012 school year, the average cost (including tuition, fees, room and board) was $17,131 per year for an in-state student attending a public, four-year college or university. For a student attending a private four-year school, the comparable average cost was $38,589 annually. And these numbers are likely to increase in the years ahead. So, what can you do to help meet the high costs of higher education? For starters, you need to save and invest — early and often. And you’ll also want to choose investments that are particularly well suited for college. Here are a few suggestions: • 529 plan — When you invest in a 529 plan, all withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualified college expense for your child, or even your grandchild. (However, non-qualified withdrawals may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) Contribution limits are quite high so, in all likelihood, you’ll be able to put as much as you want into a 529 plan; although you generally can’t exceed the annual gift tax exclusion, which is $13,000 per beneficiary in 2012. Furthermore, if you participate in your own state’s 529 plan, your contributions may be tax deductible on your state taxes. 16

Fayette County Lifestyle | September 2016

• Coverdell Education Savings Account — Depending on your income level, you can contribute up to $2,000 annually to a Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA) in 2012. Your Coverdell earnings and withdrawals will be tax-free, provided you use the money for qualified education expenses. (Any non-education withdrawals from a Coverdell ESA may be subject to a 10 percent penalty.) Unlike a 529 Plan, in addition to college expenses, Coverdell funds can be used for kindergarten through 12th grade expenses and you can place Coverdell ESA contributions into virtually any investment you choose - stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, etc. • Zero coupon bonds — A zero coupon bond is priced at a discount to its principal or face value. You receive the principal value when the bond matures. So, you could purchase a zero coupon bond that matures in the year your child is ready to go to college.

Although you won’t receive regular interest payments throughout the life of the zero coupon bond, you’ll still be liable for the taxes on this interest. So, before purchasing a zero coupon bond, consult with your tax advisor. These investments have proven popular among many parents and grandparents. However, you’ll need to consult with your financial advisor to determine which college-savings vehicles are appropriate for your needs. But don’t wait too long — because, before you know it, today’s grade-schoolers will be packing for their college dorms. hildhood obesity now affects 1 in 6 children, according to the CDC. Obesity in children may affect not only the child’s health, but predisposes them to many preventable adult health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and certain forms of cancer. Remarkably, once the body creates fat cells, they remain for life and can only shrink or expand in size, thereby predisposing to obesity. Many schools have reduced or eliminated recess, playtime, and physical education in their curriculum in an effort to save money. I believe that this will ultimately cost our country more as we raise more unhealthy children into adulthood, unless we as parents and a community intervene. We should make certain that our children get 60 minutes of moderate to intense exercise daily as recommended by the CDC. Moderate exercise includes activities such as a brisk walk or riding a bicycle. More vigorous activities include sports such as basketball, soccer, or hiking a steep hill. In addition to activity guidelines, we should make certain that our children are getting adequate nutrition at home and at school. Parents should eliminate fast food and processed foods and encourage fruits, vegetables, and non-fried meats. Another aspect of nutrition that is often overlooked is avoiding or minimizing sugary drinks, including many processed juices, and encouraging children to drink water. It is much easier for a child to maintain a healthy diet as an adult if it is established during childhood. As we go deeper into the school year, enter into fall and then winter, activity levels tend to decrease. We have to be intentional about helping our children find daily active opportunities, while ensuring they are making wise nutritional choices. Children look up to us, their parents, teachers, and other respected adults, so its incumbent upon us to lead by example while encouraging active and healthy lifestyles, which will yield more capable and smarter children!

Darius Glover Paraplegic Motocross Racer D

arius Glover is no ordinary individual. After a life-changing motorcycle accident as a teenager, Glover became the first and only paralyzed motocross rider allowed to race in national events. For Glover, “Adversity isn’t the end, it’s just a new beginning.” For someone who has come so close to losing his own life, he has an extraordinary heart and passion for living life to the fullest. Now, as a 25-year-old nationally competitive racer, Darius Glover sets his sights to help others achieve their dreams as he achieves his own. In 2014, Glover started Live and Learn, a nonprofit whose goal is “to positively influence human lives by connecting with those facing adversity and building uplifting relationships.” The nonprofit helps share his own fascinating story and it inspires people of all ages to live well through adversity.

22

Fayette County Lifestyle | September 2016

When Glover was a baby, his father noticed his balance was incredible. He would sit him on the ledge of a kitchen counter and watch, as his son would easily find his way to center. At age six, Glover began riding a motorcycle. From this young age Glover knew he wanted to be a professional motocross racer. He looked up to his older brother who would take him on motorcycle rides at a young age. “I knew I just wanted to ride – if it had a motor and wheels, I wanted to ride it.” Typical weekdays consisted of working on bikes, doing homework and working out at the gym. Racing on the weekends was no small fee; so Glover would do odd jobs to raise money to compete. He would cut grass, sell his grandmother’s cakes & pies and shovel snow, whatever it took to make his dream a reality. For Glover, going to the track was the best time of the week. He faced challenges CONTINUED >

against more skilled riders, but Glover and his best friend constantly pushed each other. At age twelve, Glover began competing in Maryland state nationals competitions. At thirteen, he placed fifth in the Mid Atlantic Motocross Association’s Championship. Glover progressed quickly and was well on his way to being a top performer. THE ACCIDENT

The accident happened on July 1, 2006. For the Glover family, it was just another day. On race day, thousands of people line the tracks outside of recreational vehicles to revel in the race experience. Glover was determined to get the points required to qualify for a national championship. Glover had run the track on the inside successfully a few times before. When it was time to race, he revved up and decided to try the outside path of the jump. Unbeknownst to Glover, the track had just been watered, and he quickly lost momentum in the air. The frame of his bike hit the top of the jump and after being ejected from over its handlebars, the bike landed on top of him. He tried multiple times to get up, but his legs wouldn’t move. Glover knew something was wrong, but the degree of his injury didn’t phase him. “I remember, all I wanted to do when I was in the airlift was look out the window, but they wouldn’t let me.” When the doctor told his mother that he would never walk again, she screamed. Through the trauma, his family was faithful. It was his grandmother—who arrived in the Johnston, Pennsylvania hospital shortly after he was admitted—who put hands on him and prayed. Glover would spend almost a year in the hospital, enduring two major back surgeries, homeschooling and daily physical therapy. There, he made the best of his situation, always innovating with his wheelchair and beating the odds with physical therapists. His family ensured that Glover learned how to do things on his own, from driving a truck, to cooking his own meals and getting from place to place. With a passion for the sport and a natural entrepreneurial spirit, it didn’t take long for Glover to figure out a way to customize his bike to ride once again. Glover reentered school in a wheelchair a year after the accident, experiencing the difference between his image as a standing, running, jumping young man to a sitting, rolling one, though no less himself. Glover’s positive spirit and can-do attitude helped shatter people’s notions about what it meant to be “disabled”. Glover’s determination and the support of his principal and classmates made it possible for him to miraculously walk across stage to receive his diploma. Yet his accomplishments on the national stage were only beginning.

As a senior in 2009, Glover was named the #1 Dreamer at Steve Harvey’s Dreamer’s Academy in Orlando, Florida. In 2010 he had the honor of racing the X-Games at the Los Angeles Coliseum. In 2011, Glover became the first and only paralyzed racer to be cleared by the American Motorcyclist Association to compete in national events. By 2012, he became the first paraplegic to ever ride at Loretta Lynn Amateur National Motocross Championship, named the Extremity Games Champion. COMMUNITY IMPACT AFTER RECOVERY

Through his nonprofit, Live and Learn, Glover began speaking to audiences around the state and even the country. A YouTube video Glover released went viral, and he began building a fan base. In January of 2015, Glover and a team traveled to London to meet a young man who was also paralyzed, but wanted to continue to race. Glover shared stories of encouragement with his new friend, helping him with troubleshooting and even testing out his customized bike. Glover still receives messages and letters often with questions and concerns. Someone who heard about Darius’ story wrote from Washington state that he had been injured and even considered suicide; so Glover and his team traveled and spent three days with him in the hospital, teaching him wheelchair tricks, and just having fun. As it turned out, Glover’s visit may have saved his new friend’s life. Glover wants to be able to inspire people in that way all over the world. That is why Live and Learn exists. From developing customized inventions for the handicapped, to increasing the number of his speaking engagements in the local community, Glover and his team of family and friends want Live and Learn to be a household name. With the help of funding and investors, Glover is determined to multiply his positive impact on people’s lives. As a young man, Glover has worked diligently to share his story of hope and triumph against the odds. A documentary is even in the works to share his story with a broader audience. “The stars have to be right, but I know I can do it. I am here for a greater purpose: to help other people.” As he speaks to Fayette County Lifestyle, surrounded by his family, it is easy to see his radiant determination not just to get through life, but also to thrive and inspire others. His grandmother, celebrating 85 years of age, says with a smile, “God’s got something for him to do.” Darius Glover says of his journey, “I hope that when people meet me, they’ll see me, and not a wheelchair.” In many ways, he is a true American motocross hero. GREMLIN GROWLERS A New Taste on the Fayetteville Square ARTICLE OGECHI OPARAH PHOTOGRAPHY GOBI PHOTOGRAPHY

G

remlin Growlers is the oldest Georgia growler shop south of Atlanta. It also happens to be the first growler shop in the state to serve only American craft beer. Gremlin Growlers is proud to support local first, and then support around the country as best it can. At any given time 50% of their products are made in the state of Georgia. Gremlin Growlers first opened up in Peachtree City in 2012, started by Glenn Gresham, a savvy, charismatic young beer lover and business owner. In the fall of 2016Â it will be open for business in Fayetteville, GA. Gresham sat down with Fayette County Lifestyle to share some of the culture of the industry, what makes Gremlin Growlers unique, and what it CONTINUED > means to be a young business owner in Fayette County.

GREMLIN GROWLERS (CON TI N U ED)

THE CONCEPTION OF GREMLIN GROWLERS

When he started in the beer industry, Gresham was a stock boy at what he describes as a subpar liquor store. It quickly became obvious to him that he was a little too qualified for that job, but it introduced him to craft beer. “I became enamored with small, fiercely independent companies that made a product they were passionate about, that they stood behind; they brew what they want to brew and what they think is delicious and flavorful, and if you enjoy it that’s fantastic, and if not no big deal, but it is essentially the idea that we are not going to change, just to make somebody else comfortable.” In 2012 he founded Gremlin Growlers. The growler shop at its core carries fresh beer from breweries around the state and the country, on the customer’s terms. With sustainable glass containers known as growlers, buyers can pay for just the beer at a reasonable price. A typical day for Gresham is 12 to 16 hours. From a morning French-pressed coffee, to quick e-mails and phone calls, he heads to the shop. “As soon as I hit the shop it’s rocking and rolling: phone calls, e-mails, deliveries, putting the new inventory in the system, getting the new inventory on the shelves, maintaining rotation, taking care of customers, cleaning tap lines and swapping out kegs.” COLLABORATION A SIGNATURE OF GREMLIN GROWLERS

Gremlin Growlers has benefited from the close-knit, supportive community that is the local beer scene. Breweries are like families, and everyone knows everyone else. That has meant great things for the culture of Gremlin Growlers. Workers show up to the shop ready to do great work, without ego. Gremlin has cultivated strong relationships with nearly every local brewery in the state of Georgia, from Red Brick Brewery, Georgia’s oldest craft brewery, to Jailhouse Brewery, Second Self (west Midtown), Cherry Street Brewing Cooperative and more. In 2012, Gresham had an idea for a new beer style, India Pale Saison (IPS) that hadn’t been done before. He approached Red Brick Brewery about his idea, and together they professionally brewed 15 test gallons that were poured at the Gremlin Growler shop. In their

first year of collaboration, they were able to raise $2,000.00 for the charity Healing for Heroes, an organization that rescues and trains service dogs and pairs them with returning veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). All proceeds from the test batch went directly to Healing for Heroes. The staff at Red Brick enjoyed the flavor profile of the beer so much that they re-brewed it without telling Gresham. He showed up to their 20th anniversary theme party, and Red Brick was pouring that same collaboration beer. The keg was empty in a record 47 minutes. Gresham appreciates the camaraderie afforded him in his daily work. When deciding to change locations, Gresham called on his mentor, the owner of Max Lagers for advice. BEING A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR IN FAYETTE COUNTY

As we walk through the courthouse lawn, Gresham responds to what it has been like being a young business owner in this community. Gresham says that while he’d like to think it has been extraordinarily different, much hasn’t changed. “Frankly, I’m used to being underrated. It makes it easier to sneak up on people.” “Being an entrepreneur presents a lot of opportunities, particularly here in Fayette County. I feel like young people in general, regardless of whether they are business owners, face a pretty large stigma. And so it’s my pleasure to on a daily basis disrupt those stigmas. You hear an older generation say all the time that millennials are lazy or they’re entitled, or that kind of thing. I’ve been a business owner for four years and I’ve been in the industry for eight and a half, and I have worked my way up.” But Gresham notes that the beer industry is unique in that it squarely relies on younger people, particularly Generation X and Millennials. “They have vastly different concepts about what is pleasing, what is enjoyable, and what should be sought after. It’s an awesome thing.” Gresham has been impressed with the experience of opening shop in the area. “For the most part, Fayette County has done an absolutely amazing job of welcoming us.” Peachtree City didn’t give Gremlin Growlers much trouble to open, and there are still those in the beer community who are surprised to see the progress possible in the area. QUALITY SERVICE LOOKING AHEAD

With a business that is four years in the making, there is a lot to look forward to. “Having a well-trained staff, excellent customer service, and the best beer selection south of Atlanta without question, are some of the things we have done to make sure we were successful until now.” With a visible location and exciting new renovations right on the Fayetteville square, Gremlin Growlers is expected to be a resounding success, attracting a vibrant, diverse mix of customers. As he looks ahead, Gresham is interested in what Gremlin Growlers can do to grow with the community and to meet new needs, without diluting the original concept. When you visit, be sure to ask about the story behind the name, and see if you can meet the ever-friendly Glenn Gresham himself. Gremlin Growlers will be located on the Square in Fayetteville and is set to open in October of 2016. For more information visit GremlinGrowlers.com. September 2016 | Fayette County Lifestyle

Renovate & Refine

The

Ultimate

Man Cave Experience ARTICLE LAKEISHA FLEMING PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

After

P

icture it. It’s an hour before game time when the guys start arriving. You kick back, shoot a few games of pool, or perhaps play a game of billiards. Then the main event. You and your crew sit back in style, ice cold drinks in hand, food a heartbeat away. From your control center, you turn on the game, adjust the surround‐ sound audio, and experience the game as if you are one of the players on the field. This is comfort. This is luxury. This is your man cave. “A man cave is any interior space that reflects the likes of the man of the house. He can have his own space to cater to his needs, or do as he pleases in this space,” states Pamela Freeman, Principle/Designer, Masterpiece Designs. It’s more than just a place to call your own; it’s a place that reflects your personality, and offers a feeling of escape into your own world. The great thing about creating this world, is there are no definitive rules. First, you want to find a space in the house that appeals to you. Maybe the basement? Rec room? Loft? Look with an open mind, notes Pamela. Don’t put 30

yourself in a box. “Any place can be a man cave. Even a garage may be the ultimate man cave for the avid car collector,” she says. Once your area has captured your eye, it’s time to set the atmosphere. Find the focal point of the space. Check out that ‘60’s jukebox that helps you travel back in time; or spark up nostalgia by paying homage to an ‘80’s video arcade. Eclectic paintings, or a rare coin collection can appeal to the artistic connoisseur. An authentic movie house popcorn machine can be an excellent conversation piece. Perhaps a shrine of sorts to your hometown football team, complete with players’ jerseys, team pictures and other memorabilia, creates the tone you are looking for. Even the sleekest, sexiest, modern technology can keep you engrossed for hours. Next it’s time to make this room feel like home. “Comfortable seating, great color on the walls, a place to keep beverages like a refrigerator or a kegerator, and TV for the sports enthusiast” are all must haves, Pamela mentions. That seating could mean a luxury leather reclining massage chair, or custom home theater seats.

Before

Wall color can include bold splashes or muted earth tones. Instead of ice, you may prefer to chill your drinks without watering them down with an ice ball maker. And while you may not be able to get a hold of a custom 370‐inch custom‐made TV (yes, it exists), you can surely achieve your own slice of HD visual heaven. Gauge your preferences by visiting high‐end electronics stores. Take in a car show to view some classic vehicles that could adorn your space. And spend hours perusing unique combinations of gaming tables that double as dining areas. The possibilities are infinite. After you’ve nailed down preferences, taken appropriate measurements and envisioned the final product, it’s time to put it all together. Whether you call on a contractor or embark upon the adventure yourself, the outcome is sure to be satisfying. Rewarding. And yours. Enjoy your ultimate man cave experience.
