Ah, the holidays. Thanksgiving is over, trees are being trimmed, and parents everywhere are telling their kids to "write a letter to Santa". At least that's what my mom told me in 1973 when I was five. I was hard at work, crafting the perfect letter to St. Nick when my mother decided to grab the Kodak and snap a few photos so I would "have them to show my children someday". After the twentieth click, I couldn't take it anymore and shot my mother a look. The look that says, "Listen, lady... I am trying to concentrate on what could be the most important letter of my life and you won't stop taking pictures!"
That was fifty-one years ago and I still make that face. I get busy... swamped... covered up... and it seems it is never without interruption. Yesterday I had twenty-nine different text threads going. Today, only eighteen, thank goodness. I get about 400 emails a day, mostly from solicitors, but they create a sea of inbox "pings" that make it almost impossible to keep up with. Not to mention the everyday life of a mother, wife, double-business owner, community member, etc., etc. Life for me can be constant "bug-off" looks, just ask my husband.
But the one thing that keeps my head above water is the knowledge that I have a personal relationship with Jesus. I may lose my cool from time to time, but even in my utter imperfection, I am always loved, always forgiven, and always cared for by He who knows my heart. That is the best Christmas gift of all, the gift of Heavenly Love. Santa can't hold a candle to Him. Thankfully, my husband still loves me too. I'm sure there are days he doesn't like me all that much, but I'm certain he loves me. And to all of my friends and family who have seen that "look" and still accept and love me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you right back.
I truly hope you enjoy the holidays with the people who love you.
Merry Christmas, Fayette County!

SOMA COUNSELING’S MICHELLE RATHBURN REVEALS COPING MECHANISMS
DURING THE HOLIDAYS.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SOURCES OF STRESS PEOPLE FACE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?
Expectations—either self-imposed or set by others—can be overwhelming. Whether it’s striving to host a Pinterestworthy holiday party, purchasing every gift on a child’s Christmas wish list, or filling the calendar with too many events, burnout at the end of the holiday season is very common due to trying to do too much.
HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY ADVISE YOUR PATIENTS TO MANAGE THE HEIGHTENED EXPECTATIONS AND DEMANDS DURING THIS TIME?
In these situations, I encourage my clients to focus on setting healthy patterns of communication and boundaries with others, as well as creating realistic plans that support their mental and physical well-being.
DO YOU NOTICE ANY PARTICULAR GROUPS, SUCH AS PARENTS OR THOSE WITH FINANCIAL CONCERNS, STRUGGLING MORE WITH HOLIDAY STRESS?
The holidays bring a wide range of emotions for many people, particularly those who have recently lost a loved one and are experiencing their first holiday without that person. I also notice that parents experience heightened stress during this season. There can be pressure related to gift-giving, holiday spending, and the expectation for parents to create memorable experiences for their children. I work with these clients to help them find meaningful ways to celebrate that align with their values and resources.
WHAT ROLES DO FAMILY DYNAMICS PLAY IN HOLIDAY STRESS?
Family dynamics play a significant role in holiday stress, as past tensions, unresolved conflicts, or differing beliefs
and values can resurface during gatherings. I often recommend that clients prepare ahead of time by identifying potential stressors and planning ways to respond calmly and assertively. It’s important to focus on what can be controlled—such as one’s reactions—and to allow space for breaks when needed.
WHAT STRATEGIES DO YOU SUGGEST FOR MANAGING FEELINGS OF LONELINESS OR ISOLATION DURING THE HOLIDAYS, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT HAVE FAMILY AROUND?
Many people struggle with loneliness during the holidays. Create community— find ways to remind yourself that you’re not alone. We are fortunate to live in a thriving community with many opportunities to meet people and establish healthy connections. In today’s world, technology is a gift that can help bridge the gap when in-person visits with friends and family aren’t possible. It is important to plan ahead—create a schedule of enjoyable activities, whether it’s a holiday-themed movie night, an outdoor walk or golf cart ride through a neighborhood holiday light display, or making a favorite holiday meal.
HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE PATIENTS TO BE MINDFUL OF THEIR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
Create a daily self-check-in by asking yourself these questions: ‘How am I feeling physically and emotionally right now?’ ‘What do I need at this moment to feel more balanced or at ease?’ ‘What is one thing I am grateful for?’ and ‘Am I staying connected to people who support and uplift me?’
WHAT ARE SOME SIMPLE SELF-CARE PRACTICES PEOPLE CAN ADOPT DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
Just a few minutes of deep breathing, prayer or meditation, and time for self-reflection can help you stay grounded. Movement is also essential—whether it’s a short walk, gentle yoga practice, or a gym workout, physical activity can relieve stress and reset the mind. I also encourage clients to prioritize sleep, maintain regular routines, and say ‘no’ when they feel overwhelmed amid the demands of the season.

CONSIDER SHARING SOME FUN TIME WITH SENIORS THIS CHRISTMAS!
ARTICLE BY PAM REID | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Making ornaments is so fun and you get to keep what you make!
Some seniors get sad during the holidays. We organize activities that keep our residents focused on creating happy moments and memories. We love when the community gets involved.
The holiday season, while a time of joy and celebration for many, can be particularly challenging for seniors, especially those who reside in assisted living communities. For some, the festive season brings memories of past gatherings with family, missed traditions, and a poignant sense of loneliness. Seniors in these settings may experience the “holiday blues,” a feeling of sadness or depression often triggered by missing loved ones, traditions, and the familiarity of home. This experience is not exclusive to Christmas but applies across holidays like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and others that may hold special significance.
One of the main struggles seniors encounter during the holidays is the feeling of isolation. Many older adults have families who live far away or who are unable to visit, making it difficult to participate in traditional celebrations. The absence of loved ones can amplify feelings of loneliness and loss, especially for those who may have lost spouses or friends. Health issues and limited mobility can also prevent seniors from partaking in the holiday outings or traditions they once enjoyed, creating a sense of disconnection from the joy around them.
There are several senior living communities in Fayette County. Heartis Fayetteville is one such community. They are fortunate to have Vibrant Life Director, Cathy Robinson, who is dedicated to creating memorable experiences for their residents. “Some seniors get sad during the holidays. We organize activities that keep our residents focused on creating happy moments and memories. We love when the community gets involved.” Here are some ideas to foster joy and connection for seniors across different holiday traditions:
1. Simple but heartfelt, writing holiday cards can bring joy to seniors. Community members can create cards expressing warm wishes for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and even other holidays like Easter, offering seniors a sense of connection. Pull out your craft supplies, gather the kids around the dining room table, and create some super cute, holiday joy together!
2. Cookie decorating or ornament-making can be a delightful way to engage seniors. These activities can also provide an opportunity for families to visit and join in. For non-Christmas holidays, consider crafts like candle decorating for Hanukkah or creating symbolic decorations for Kwanzaa.
3. Setting up a hot cocoa or apple cider bar in the assisted living home is a cozy way to spread cheer. Seniors can come together to enjoy warm drinks, socialize, and share stories. This activity can incorporate different holiday treats, allowing residents to experience a variety of seasonal flavors and traditions.
4. Reading or storytelling can encourage seniors to share their holiday memories. Community members can read holiday-themed books or help seniors record their favorite holiday memories on video or audio.
5. Holiday Music and Caroling is a powerful way to uplift spirits. Organizing caroling sessions, or playing holiday music from various traditions, can be a lively and meaningful experience for residents. Get your neighbors involved and go share the joy of singing together!
Recognizing the diversity of holidays and incorporating activities that honor each resident’s traditions is key to making everyone feel valued. Reach out to one of our senior assisted living communities today. You can help alleviate the “holiday blues” and bring connection to seniors during the season.
SIMPLE, TASTY HOLIDAY COCKTAIL AND APPETIZER THAT YOUR GUESTS WILL LOVE!

When it comes to New Year’s Eve celebrations, you certainly don’t want to spend all your time in the kitchen while your guests enjoy themselves in another room without you. That’s what I love about these two, delicious recipes. Each of them has only a few ingredients that you can prep ahead with minimal last-minute finishing touches, and you will have more time to enjoy the festivities of the evening. Enjoy your New Year with ease!
ingredients
• 1 oz St. Germain liqueur
• 2 tsp rosemary simple syrup
• 1½ parts Champagne (Brut or Prosecco)
• Frozen cranberries
• Small rosemary sprigs
directions
1. Pour 1 oz St. Germain into a champagne glass
2. Add 2 tsp of Rosemary Simple Syrup (Make ahead: 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water boiled with 4 rosemary sprigs. Cool and strain and store in the fridge for up to 1 month).
3. Top with Champagne.
4. Add rosemary sprig and frozen cranberries to help keep the drink chilled.
5. Enjoy!
ingredients
Makes approximately 14 roll-ups
• 6 ounces prosciutto, about 14 slices
• 4 ounces Boursin cheese, chive and shallot flavor
• ¼ cup pistachios, toasted and chopped small
• Honey for drizzling
directions
1. Toast the pistachios in a small skillet over medium heat. Once cooled, chop into small pieces.
2. Make sure the sliced prosciutto is cold as it will be easier to work with. Lay a piece of prosciutto down flat on your work surface. Spread a small amount of Boursin cheese to the end of the prosciutto and roll it up. Repeat until everything is rolled.
3. Heat a nonstick griddle pan over medium-high heat. Lightly spray it with oil. Pan-sear the rollups on each side for 1-2 minutes, or until they are lightly golden brown. Remove them from the pan and add to a serving platter. Drizzle with honey and top with chopped pistachios.
4. Serve warm and enjoy!

Embrace the season with these holiday party tips and tricks.
Just like that, it’s officially the most wonderful time of the year. And while you may still be stuffed from all the turkey, it’s time to start planning the ultimate holiday party. I’ve included some tips and tricks to make sure it is the absolute best time for your guests.
Setting the atmosphere is crucial. The mood is subjective to the type of party you’re having, though. This could include a tree in the corner, an advent wreath on the table, a menorah on the counter, or other decor aligning with your celebration. Either way, I personally recommend lighting a fire in the fireplace or playing a looping video of one on your television to create a festive and cozy ambiance.
Holiday games act as engaging entertainment. I once played a game where little trinkets from the Dollar Tree were wrapped in a massive ball of plastic wrap, and guests had 30 seconds to unwrap as much as possible before passing it to the next guest, claiming the unwrapped trinkets as their prize. It definitely gets the adrenaline up and provokes quite a few laughs at the random items wrapped inside.
Food and drinks play a massive role in the holiday party scene. Whether a simple apple dip (8 oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup toffee bits served with apple slices) or a festive drink, such as a cranberry Moscow Mule (2 oz vodka, 1 oz cranberry juice, 1/2 oz fresh lime juice, ginger beer, and fresh cranberries with a sprig of rosemary for garnish), serving holiday-themed food and drinks amplifies the atmosphere.
The playlist is, in my opinion, the most important part of any holiday party. While everyone is mingling, it is crucial to have some festive background noise. And, while the classics are well, classic, here are my go-to, more modern song choices for some great holiday fun!
“Christmas Isn’t Cancelled (Just You)” - by Kelly Clarkson
“Drummer Boy” - by Justin Bieber
“Fancy Like Christmas” - by Walker Hayes
“Hot Chocolate” - by Tom Hanks (From the Polar Express soundtrack)
“It’s Not Christmas Till Somebody Cries” - by Carly Rae Jepsen
“Naughty List” - Liam Payne featuring Dixie “Redneck 12 Days of Christmas” - by Jeff Foxworthy
“Stretchy Pants” - by Carrie Underwood
“Text Me Merry Christmas” - by Straight No Chaser featuring Kristen Bell
“The Chanukah Song” - by Adam Sandler Now go create your own, special playlist, pour yourself a cup of eggnog, and dance the night away!
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
