The holidays are a time marked by tradition, gift-giving and dusting off old holiday sweaters! Like many, I recall from my childhood being captivated by the anticipation of the holidays... I remember sneaking down to the tree early to peek at magnificent displays of gifts I hoped to receive on the big day. The joy and energy it brought me was seemingly unforgettable!... It took repetition, but I would slowly begin to realize - without fail, that no matter what gifts I received I would begin always yearning for the next toy or distraction about a month later.

This realization transformed my understanding of joy and its basic truth: when we seek joy solely in material things , it never lasts. However, when our joy is rooted in something deeper—like the love of Jesus—this flame never burns out. Through lived experience I have discovered the true meaning of Christmas, and life itself; found in connection to our creator, love, and faith. He remains a constant encourager and comforter for us, guiding us to the true essence of contentment and in turn: joy.

He the creator has provided me the opportunity to make this magazine and in turn spread love and cheer. As you dive into this issue, I hope it brings you the warmth and joy it has brought me. May it accompany you as you gather with family and friends, perhaps over a glass of eggnog and a plate of cookies and be the first of many small gifts you receive.

Wishing you a joyous December filled with love and laughter!

Warm regards,

Celebrate The Holidays at The Leroy

FAYETTEVILLE’S NEWEST UPSCALE SPORTS LOUNGE IS READY TO HOST YOU AND YOUR PARTY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

Centered in the heart of Dickson Street is “The Leroy Sporting Lounge” (pronounced La-Roy), an upcoming social club with the finest gaming and sports experience in Northwest Arkansas. This remarkable lounge is ready to welcome new guests and large parties for the holiday season.

Some of the amenities include duckpin bowling, luxury darts, sports simulators, televisions for watch parties, and a unique cocktail and food menu. Bourbon and wine tastings are also an unforgettable addition to the experience.

Bowling and dart tournaments will soon be held, with Mondays being geared more toward families, and Fridays for friends and celebrating the weekend. The most popular day tends to be Fridays, but the lounge is open and ready to see you seven days a week from 11 am to 11 pm.

Formerly the UARK bowl location, The Leroy has transformed this space into an elite spot to host holiday parties and cheer on your favorite teams. Recently opening in June of 2024, the group is ecstatic to make their winter debut in Fayetteville. Groups as large as 200 people can rent areas for several hours.

In December, a new event called “Fashion First Friday” began, where the space transformed into a runway fashion show supporting local businesses and nonprofit organizations, which is a priority for The Leroy. The goal of this special event is “to build a career and education for hospitality on Dickson,” event director Christal Dixon adds. December’s fashion event focuses on holiday wear, which you won’t want to miss.

The highly capable team is ready for parties upon parties this wintertime. Guests can purchase tickets to the fashion show and inquire about parties at theleroylounge.com or call 479-332-0360.

You may be asking, “Who is Leroy?” and that is a question we are all curious about. Dixon explained, “You are Leroy, I am Leroy, we can all be Leroy.” Known for his world travels, Leroy’s artifacts can be found throughout the building.

Arkansas Alumni Foundation, Season of Giving

CONNECTING TO THE CAMPUS THAT STILL CALLS YOU HOME

As the season of giving approaches, many people are inspired to extend their generosity beyond friends and family, reaching out to organizations that uplift our community. The Arkansas Alumni Association stands out as a meaningful choice, dedicated to enriching lives and supporting initiatives that foster connection and growth. Meet Lisy McKinnon, Director of Strategic Alumni Services at the Arkansas Alumni Association. A University of Arkansas graduate, McKinnon is passionate about encouraging other alumni to stay connected and engaged with the U of A whether at home or abroad.

WHAT IS THE ARKANSAS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION?

The Arkansas Alumni Association presents U of A grads with opportunities to enrich their post graduate experience, connect with alumni in their area, and give back to their campus and community.

HOW DOES ONE BECOME A MEMBER?

We are excited to introduce our new philanthropic membership model, which will include every new graduate. Beginning in July 2025, each new grad will not only have their name etched onto the Senior Sidewalk, they will become an official member of the Arkansas Alumni Association. The association recognizes there is a cost-benefit associated with going to college. Whether you are a newer grad paying off loans or seasoned alumni who graduated years ago, our aim is to be inclusive. Additionally, any graduate or friend can become an 1871 member by giving $50 to the university. We want to honor those who are supporting university initiatives as their gifts represent meaningful engagement with the U of A community.

With our new model, we will reduce the number of asks our alumni are receiving while keeping them in the loop of exciting new opportunities. Everything we do is in alignment with our core mission: to connect and serve the University of Arkansas family.

Tusk

HOW DO ALUMNI BENEFIT FROM THEIR ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP?

Life membership definitely has its benefits! We want people involved and aware of events in our community.

There are alumni chapters, alumni awards, scholarship programs, travel groups and more. Opportunities for leadership exist via local chapters or our national board of directors. We want alumni to stay connected, engaged, and a part of our community. Our goal is to foster alumni engagement at all levels.

Before each home game, all are welcome to our Hog Wild tailgates. These are hosted on the Hill at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House across from the football stadium.

We also host our annual Alumni Awards Celebration the Friday before Homecoming where we honor the best of what our alumni represent, those individuals who showcase the impact our graduates can have in the world. Past recipients have ranged from distinguished professors to business leaders and community volunteers. This year we recognized two Young Alumni: Nashvillebased musician and songwriter Ben Rector and Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President of Strategic Marketing at Arkansas Children’s Dr. Ashlie Hilbun. Dr. Melissa Hawkins was awarded the Andrew J. Lucas Alumni Service award for community service, and the Honorary Alumni award went to Razorback team physician Dr. Al Gordon. And yes, Razorbacks are found abroad. The Alumni Association offers travel groups for its members and friends. From gameday Razorback road trips to magical Christmas markets in Quebec or Montreal, there’s a trip waiting for you.

“Our graduates consistently feel an affinity for the University of Arkansas. They continue to offer support because this school means something to them.”
“The Arkansas Alumni Association embodies the spirit of the holiday season by fostering connections among students and graduates. This holiday season, consider making a contribution that helps create a lasting impact, ensuring that the spirit of giving extends to future generations of students and alumni.”

WHAT AN AMAZING GROUP. WHAT ABOUT CURRENT AND FUTURE STUDENTS?

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Arkansas Alumni Association awards over  1 million dollars annually through a collection of scholarships.

• Most association-level scholarships are designated for incoming freshmen and are merit-based.

• Additional scholarships are also available through alumni chapters and societies such as Armed Forces, Black Alumni, Associated Student Government, Law etc.

• Each alumni scholarship has specific criteria based on donor wishes; including, but not limited to, academic achievement, service, leadership, first-generation college-going, specific major etc.

WHAT’S ONE LAST MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONVEY TO THE READERSHIP?

The Arkansas Alumni Association strives to strike a balance, so everyone feels part of this community, something bigger than themselves. Our graduates consistently feel an affinity for the University of Arkansas. They continue to offer support because this school means something to them. We believe there’s no better way to contribute to the future success of our students than by paying it forward.

Essential workers and first responders are accustomed to spending Christmas on the job

Not Home for the Holidays

As Santa Claus heads to town and families gather for Christmas turkeys and hams, many of Fayetteville’s essential workers won’t be home for the holidays. At hospitals and police and fire departments, duty remains top of mind, no matter the date on the calendar.

Officer Seth Hawley Fayetteville Police Department

Christmas is like any other day at Fayetteville Police Department, says Officer Seth Hawley, who will be working December 25.

“We stay ready to take a call when we are needed — that’s what we signed up to do, even on holidays,” Hawley said. “We want Christmas to be a joyful, memorable day for everyone, but sometimes bad things happen and our presence is needed.”

They help each other make the best of it, he said. “The camaraderie we have helps, too; there are 10 of us experiencing the same thing, working instead of being with our families on Christmas Day.”

Captain Jason Pomeroy Fayetteville Fire Department

Fayetteville Fire Department shifts are 48 hours on, 96 hours off, says Capt. Jason Pomeroy.

Firefighters take turns cooking group meals year-round, he said, since they must remain at the station at all times.

On Christmas, the on-duty crew cooks the main protein for a potluck feast, and their families join them, bringing the side dishes. “If we do get called away in the middle of cooking, then the families can take over,” Pomeroy said. “The station is decorated and festive. This helps bring our crews closer and also builds that support chain and connections among our families.”

Dr. Senushi O’Sullivan Washington Regional Center

At Washington Regional Medical Center, “the holiday spirit is palpable, even within the ER, on Christmas,” says Dr. Senushi O’Sullivan.

“We’re more aware than ever that our patients don’t have a choice, they’re very sick and have to be in the hospital,” she said. “We get to go home at the end of our shift and be with our loved ones, so working on Christmas really puts things in perspective.”

When a patient expresses gratitude to the staff, “that is very meaningful to us,” O’Sullivan added. “It makes that time away from our families worth it even more.”

A ROOMMATE’S FAMILY RECIPE BECOMES A BELOVED TRADITION FOR BAKER HALEY HERRIDGE

Haley Herridge was in college the first time she ever had pavlova. Her roommate’s father was from New Zealand and whipped up the fluffy treat for the eager students. Over the years, Herridge has perfected the sweet treat, making pavlova a star dessert in her family. So much so, it serves as her husband’s birthday cake. Herridge says, “There are so many ways to serve and decorate pavlova, making it the perfect special dessert for holidays or celebrations.”

PAVLOVA HOLIDAY WREATH

INGREDIENTS

• 6 egg whites

• 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

• 1/4 tsp cream of tartar

• 1 1/2 tsp cornstarch

• 1 pint heavy whipping cream

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup powdered sugar

• raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, pomegranate seeds, mint leaves

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 300°F

2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

3. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and corn starch until soft peaks form.

4. Gradually add the sugar, 1 Tablespoon at a time. Once all the sugar has been added, keep mixing until meringue has formed strong, stiff peaks with a glossy look. It will take at least 8 minutes.

5. Spoon pavlova in the shape of a wreath using an ice cream scoop onto the tray, then use a spatula to smooth the dollops together.

6. Place the pavlova in the oven and immediately drop the heat to 200 degrees, and bake for 90 minutes, until shell is firm.

7. Once cooked, turn oven off and leave pavlova to completely cool inside the oven, at least 1 hour.

8. Whip one pint of heavy cream in the mixer with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, 1 tsp of vanilla until cream is thickened to liking.

9. Top with fresh whipped cream, fresh fruit, pomegranate seeds, and mint leaves for a festive look. A powdered sugar dusting also works.

ORNAMENT CLUSTERS

SUPPLIES

• 22 gauge wire

• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes

• Wire snips

STEP 1

Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”

STEP 2

Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 3

Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.

STEP 4

Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 5

Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!

Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!

that’s a WRAP

DIY Gift Wrapping That Stands Out During The Season

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

‘TIS

‘Tis the season to get crafty, clever or characterized! Well-wrapped holiday packages create immediate enthusiasm and somehow seem to make gifts more meaningful. Whether going for shiny, vintage, colorful, rustic, playful or eco-friendly impressions, the following are some Do-ItYourself gift-wrapping ideas to make the wrapping process even more satisfying. Simply applying jute twine to gifts provides a ‘less is more’ vibe.

ADD NATURAL TOUCHES TO CRAFT PAPER:

For gifts with a rustic, organic feel, use seasonal accents, such as sprigs, pine cones and cinnamon sticks, tied up with twine, encircling recycled paper for the wrapping.

FIRST INITIAL DECORATION:

In lieu of a gift tag, attach an oversized paper mâché letter of the recipient’s first initial to the top of the box. The letter then can serve as customized décor, too.

POLKA DOTS:

Wrap gifts in plain craft paper and then cut out big, multicolored polka dots to glue down. It’s hard not to smile at big, bright dots.

CARDBOARD BOX SNOWPERSON:

Wrap three or four boxes in white paper, with different gifts inside, and then stack them. Tape the boxes together, tapering to the top. Glue buttons on the bottom ones, create a snowperson’s face on the top one, with carrot nose cut out of orange paper.

‘tis the SEASON

Attach a real hat, if desired. Tie wider, festive bow around the snowperson’s ‘neck.’

Add a real corncob pipe for a bonus finishing touch, if preferred.

MINI TREE GIFT WRAPPING:

Pine needles and small tips of real tree branches make quick and easy mini Christmas trees that can be glued onto Christmas gifts. They will smell nice, too.

BOOK PAGE WRAPPING PAPER:

Repurpose old book pages by cutting out shapes of dreidels, snowflakes, ornaments, candles or reindeer to paste on gifts.

DIY STAMP WRAPPING PAPER:

Wrap gifts in solid colors of paper. Secure ink stamps and an ink pad in a themed color(s), and stamp the paper as much or as little as desired.

UNBOXED:

Apply other types of containers, rather than boxes or bags, for gift wrapping; examples:  canisters, pillow cases, baskets, fabric scraps, maps, glass containers, towels, blankets, scarves, Bento bags (also called triangle bags or origami bags).

Making Spirits

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
