hen Fishers once again ranked among the best places to raise children in a recent survey, it likely came as no surprise. The town has been attracting residents for its family-friendly attributes for decades. And it has been receiving national recognition from noteworthy publications like Money, BusinessWeek and Forbes for being among the best places to live.

However, long before those accolades started collecting, Gary Harris Sr. and Joy Holmes-Harris were drawn to Fishers more than 12 years ago because of its great schools, safety and sense of community. For them, a community that supported their family values was a No. 1 priority. Today, as their oldest son, Gary Harris, gears up for the NBA arena, it’s evident that their choice was instrumental in helping to shape the basketball standout into a candidate who has been described as a person who has character and a hard work ethic. In this issue, his parents and coaches share their thoughts about Gary joining the pros, and why it’s unlikely his deeply grounded character will remain unchanged as he moves further into the public spotlight. For his part, Gary, a 2012 HSE graduate, simply wants the draft to result in working with a team that is a great fit for both sides. Fishers’ sense of community also was a huge draw for Trisha Barton, who moved here years ago when her oldest son was in pre-school. She, too, decided that Fishers was the best pick for a young family, particularly because of its high-performing schools. Learn more about Trisha in the Your Neighbor department. As you read this issue of Fishers Lifestyle, we hope it will help you appreciate everything this town has to offer. hank you very much Fishers and Geist residents! The response and reception to the publication has been great. And we are glad that you have enjoyed reading about your neighbors and local businesses in the area. We are just getting started and will have much more to offer in months to come.

The class of 2014 says goodbye to its high school years and hello to college and beyond. Having coached several kids in multiple sports around the area including my own son, I will cherish those times. The many open houses brought back very fond memories playing at Billericay, The Fieldhouse and Mud Sock Field.

In this, our third issue, we are excited to celebrate the summer with you. What better way than to watch the first player from Fishers drafted into the NBA? I am very proud not only of Gary Harris for his basketball accomplishment but also the entire Harris family for their humility, and they deservingly are highlighted in our feature story. I have always wondered what it would feel like to have witnessed a young player before they made it to the NBA. Having watched Gary at an early age, now I know. I look for him to have a great career.

Remember, this is your publication so keep the great story ideas coming! We are proud to serve our residents. Have a great summer!

And if you are a lover of fun, you are in for a treat. There is so much to do in and around Fishers all summer long. Enjoy!

Fishers among Indiana’s best cities for home ownership The housing market in Indiana has rebounded, with sales of existing homes in 2013 up 17.4 percent over the previous year, according to the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Also, average home prices in the state jumped by 4.2 percent to $122,900. Fishers is among Indiana’s top cities for homeownership, according to NerdWallet, a personal finance site that also rated Fishers as the second best place in Indiana to raise kids and the nation’s fifth best small city in which to live. In selecting Fishers as the sixth best city in Indiana for homeownership, it asked the following questions: Are homes available? Can you afford to live there? Is the area growing? It compared 76 Indiana communities with more than 10,000 residents. The other cities that ranked in the top 10 included, in order: Kokomo, St. John, Granger, Avon, Brownsburg, New Haven, Noblesville, Dyer and Cedar Lake. In ranking Fishers, the site noted that its two high schools rank among the top 10 on the U.S. News & World Report’s List of Best High Schools in Indiana. Also, though it had one of the highest median monthly household incomes on the list at $7,713, Fishers’ homeowners only pay 21.5 percent of their income toward monthly mortgage and utility costs.

Going Green For Fishers couple, a temporary idea quickly grows into a full-time lawn care venture article Shari Finnell

F

or Trisha Barton, the field of digital marketing has long been familiar territory. That’s why it seemed like a no-brainer to relaunch her marketing company, A-Game Strategic Marketing, LLC, after she decided to return to her entrepreneurial roots. It turns out Trisha ended up expanding upon those skills more than she had imagined. Just a couple of years ago as she was making that transition, her husband, John Shackleford, mentioned that they could earn some extra cash to fund her business venture. “He just came home one day and said, ‘I have an idea,’” Trisha recalls. That idea consisted of lawn care services, an area in which he had plenty of experience but Trisha had none. Yet, she concluded, “Why not?” They figured with 10 customers a week, and John helping out at night after returning from his full-time job, they could run it part time on a temporary basis. Using their tax refund, they bought new equipment to get the lawn care business started. Within five days, Trisha had used her marketing skills to launch the website for A Classic Cut Lawn Care. Within two weeks, they were ranking on Google for their lawn care services. “Our business was supposed to be part time,” she recalls with a laugh. “We grew to 30 customers a week in no time.” With inquiries growing from the website, a Craig’s list ad and a couple of yard signs, Trisha and John suddenly found that they needed to recruit her father-in-law to help out on a regular basis. “We were out cutting grass every day,” says Trisha, who was still maintaining her marketing business.

14 Fishers Lifestyle | July 2014

“I never thought I would do lawn care in a million years because I’m so passionate about internet marketing,” says Trisha, a former Indianapolis Colts cheerleader. “But there’s something about taking care of a customer’s lawn. It’s like art. I take pride in how we can transform someone’s yard. And I get a workout for free.” Keep going As winter rolled around, Trisha and John talked about whether they wanted to keep the “side business” running. “He was still working full-time, and we didn’t know if we wanted to do it again,” she recalls. “It was fun that summer but we did get tired.” They hadn’t settled on a decision until it seemed a decision was made for them. Sometime in March, the phone started ringing again. Steadily. “We looked at each other, and realized that we weren’t doing anything to promote the business,” says Trisha, noting that the website was still pulling in traffic. “That’s when we reconsidered. We were getting so many calls that we thought maybe we should think about this a little harder.” The business was so steady that John decided to quit his fulltime job. They also invested in new fleet of mowers, a trailer and hired a few more people to help out. “We grew the business 100 percent to 60 a week,” she says. The business, which also includes mulch services, now is running at about 100 a week. It’s hard work but worth the effort. “Obviously, you feel like you never get a break, but it’s very rewarding. We love our customers and feel very fortunate to have the team we have.” The added benefit is working for themselves. “We’re both entrepreneurs. We love to create and build. It fires us up,” Trisha says.

Life off the greens When Trisha and John are not out running lawn care services, more than likely on rainy days, they enjoy hanging out with their blended family of four sons: Jonathan, 20, Connor, 16, Adam, 14, and Jackson, 8. The flexibility of the business allows them to be more available for the children. “We could go work for someone else and make a lot more money, but we like the flexibility of being here with our kids,” Trisha says. The couple also shares a love of music, having performed as part of The Echo Station, a band they co-founded in August 2012. John is a vocalist and lead guitarist, while Trisha performs as a vocalist and harmonica player. “I loved performing since I was a little girl,” Trisha says. “It’s exhilarating and fun. I may not be the most talented person, but it’s something my husband and I share. Music is what brought us together; it’s how we met.” For now, the band is on hiatus. “We had a great group of musicians,” says Trisha, who notes that they may have been victims of their own success. “We got booked too often, which caused us to lose our drummer who lived in Bloomington.” A male vocalist, who was from Hartford City, also had a hard time keeping up with the schedule. They replaced those members but found their own challenges with scheduling because of the lawn care business. Not only do they enjoy taking care of customers throughout

the Fishers area, they truly love the community, Trisha points out. When she first moved to the area, she was drawn to the school systems. “I essentially made a decision on where to live based on what school I wanted Connor to attend,” she says. “We love Fishers. It’s an absolutely wonderful place to live. We enjoy every single minute here. We love the schools, the community. We feel very blessed to be here.”

Fishers Event Nets $48,000 to Fight Cancer Article Jeannine Lee Lake

A

s the closing ceremonies for the 2014 Relay for Life of Fishers came to an end this year, event chairwoman Amanda Johnson thought about her grandfather who succumbed to cancer and a personal friend who is still dealing with the disease. She thought about the emotional toll the disease can take, and how it invades and wreaks havoc on the physical body. But most of all she thought about the show of love and support of family and friends who participated in Relay for Life of Fishers, an American Cancer Society event, and how they continue to give strength through warm embraces and encouraging words. The closing ceremony was a time to remember the lives of those lost and to celebrate renewed commitment to fight back against the disease over the next year. “We had 13 teams and 158 participants who have raised more than $48,000,” Johnson says. “We still have a few months before we end the fundraising season and are trying to get over the $50,000 mark.” Top individual participants of the event were Amelia Hall-Mitchell who raised $4,490.48. Lauren Cote secured $3,965 and David Mullen collected $2,811.49. Top Teams included Amelia’s Angels at $16,622.95 and Castaway Cancer had $10,711.60. Cancer Kickers was the third-top team with $5,690. A civil engineer at a local firm, Johnson helmed the event for 16 Fishers Lifestyle | July 2014

the second year in a row. She says she was proud of the community support and thanked those who made the 24-hour walk possible again this year. “I’ve been involved for four years now and this event is just so full of love and caring people,” she says. “It is dear to my heart for many reasons. I am very humbled to have been part of it as chair for another year.” Held at Fishers Junior High School, the annual event is called an “overnight community fundraising walk.” According to the ACS website, people camp out around a track and members of each team take turns walking around the track to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie. There is indeed a family-friendly environment for the entire community and because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be present the entire time. This year’s agenda included an Inaugural Hope Run 5-kilometer, Opening Ceremony, Relay Recess Celebration, Survivor Dinner, Luminaria Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony. For more information or to donate for the 2014 fundraising goal, call Amanda Johnson at 317.437.5975.

The Making of an NBA Player

Gary Harris, and his parents and coaches, share the story behind the young athlete’s path to the pros.

Article Shari Finnell | Photography Peter Jonathan

F

or Michigan State University’s standout guard Gary Harris, everything changes this summer. Everything. With the recent NBA Draft, the 19-year-old switches from a college routine to a full-time job--one with incredible demands and plenty of public exposure. However, by all accounts, Gary, a 2012 graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School and an Indiana Mr. Basketball, is ready for that transition. Gary, who passed on the opportunity to go pro last year after his freshman year, says the timing wasn’t right then. But the extra year playing with Michigan State has helped him hone his overall skills, both physically and mentally. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get ready for the pro level,” Gary said recently while back home in Fishers to spend time with his parents, Gary Harris Sr. and Joy Holmes-Harris, and brothers Cameron, 13, and Trey, 9. “You have to be mentally strong and confident to make that decision.” 18 Fishers Lifestyle | July 2014

His father, Gary Sr. said a lot of careful consideration went into the decision to have Gary wait another year. “We felt, at 18 years old, it would have been too soon,” he says. “With another year of experience, he was able to develop and get stronger.” Gary Sr. also said he wanted to make sure that his oldest son grasped the responsibility he was taking on. “Even though college is tough and difficult, you have a much more hectic schedule at the professional level. This is what you will be doing professionally for the next 5 to 10 years if you’re fortunate. It’s like any other person in the world. You don’t always want to get up and do your job. It’s a big decision … it’s a job.” Early preparation for the pros While playing among the likes of Miami Heats’ LeBron James and Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant is pretty heady

stuff, Gary’s development into a professional player has been in the making for years. When Gary moved to Fishers with his parents, Gary Harris Sr. and Joy Holmes-Harris, he was only 6. However, by that time, he already had plenty of exposure to pro sports. More than likely, he was the only kid in the neighborhood able to say, “My mom is a professional basketball player.” Joy and Gary Sr. recall their son hanging around the basketball court while his mother, a Purdue University All-Star, practiced and played in WNBA and ABL competition. By that time, his parents already noticed that Gary was naturally talented as an athlete. “At 4 or 5, he immediately took to sports,” his father said. “I knew he was kind of different but I didn’t put a lot of stock in it. I wasn’t thinking, I want my son to be the next Allen Iverson. I just wanted him to have fun, see how he does … how he comes along.” However, as his son continued to excel in both football and basketball as a seventh-grader, Gary Sr. changed his focus. “I thought maybe he can get a college scholarship at the rate he was growing and developing. I still didn’t look at it seriously as an opportunity to go professional. I saw it as an opportunity for him to get a free education.” For her part, Joy marveled at Gary’s accomplishments at each major transition. “Although I knew he was a very talented player, it’s all been very surprising,” she says. “When he made the varsity team as a freshman, I was like, really? And then he’s predicted to be a first-round draft pick for the NBA? I just always looked at him as Gary, my son.” Catching a coach’s eyes While his parents were thinking along the lines of “college scholarship,” basketball coach Sean Bledsoe had an entirely different perspective when he saw Gary play in AAU competition as a middle schooler. “I took one look at him and immediately thought of George ‘The Iceman’ Gervin,” recalls Sean, now an assistant coach for the University of Missouri-Kansas City men’s basketball team. When Sean approached Gary Sr. and Joy about the possibility of coaching their son, they initially passed. “We had a good conversation, and I just told him I would think about it but Gary was happy about the AAU team he was on,” Gary Sr. says. “I just left it at that.” However, Sean later picked up on their initial conversation, pointing out the strengths in Gary’s game. Those conversations eventually led to Sean coaching the young player. Beyond Gary’s skills on the court, Sean says, the athlete also brings an attitude that has equipped him to mature on and off the court more quickly. “There’s something inside him that’s different. He is such a genuine person,” he says. “The thing that stands out the most was that he was always very mannerable for a young kid. He also paid attention to details. I’ve coached a lot of teenagers. They’re not apt to pay attention to details.” “Sean brought a real understanding of the game,” says Gary Sr., noting that the coach helped them navigate the college recruiting process. “He did a good job of teaching and coaching, but he also

was caring and passionate. He also saw Gary had the tools that he could continue to develop. He saw it before I did. Hey, I was just trying to get a free education for my son.” Gary Sr. also credits Gary’s high school and college basketball coaches for shaping him for the NBA. HSE Varsity Basketball Coach Brian Satterfield “allowed him to be a leader,” while Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo “helped turn him from a boy to a man. He was hard but fair.” Brian of HSE says that Gary’s journey has been an incredible experience. “It’s definitely one of those special types of situations,” he says. “I’m proud of him. The biggest thing about Gary was that when you asked him to do something he would get it … he picked up things easily. But if he made a mistake, he learned from it. From a coaching standpoint, you love that.”

Staying on solid ground For their parts, Joy and Gary Sr. say their greatest hopes are that their son will have a smooth transition into the NBA. “We hope and pray that he will be able to showcase his talent and do what he loves,” Joy says. However, one of the most challenging aspects of this journey, Joy adds, is not being able to fully prepare him for the next steps continued >

even though she also has played at the professional level. “My recruitment was never to this extent,” Joy says. “This is on a much, much larger scale.” Through it all, they have every intention of helping Gary remain on solid ground when it comes to his celebrity status in the NBA. Joy, who is the daughter of a basketball coach, recalls growing up and being told to avoid reading newspaper reports on her games. “It’s funny. The local paper would write articles about us but dad would not allow us to read it. He didn’t want us to get a big head,” she says. Joy has passed down that advice to her son, however, it is more challenging with social media, she says. “I tell Gary, ‘Don’t pay attention to that stuff. They will end up telling you that you’re a lot better than what you are or you’re a lot worse than you really are.” “He’s still little Gary, even though at 6’4”, he’s the biggest person in the house,” Joy says with a laugh. He still gets reprimanded for leaving his clothes on the floor. “Nothing has changed besides the fact that he is a good basketball player,” she says. Gary’s brothers also help him keep him on solid ground, especially Trey. “Cameron totally gets it,” says Joy, in describing his reaction to Gary heading to the pros. “He’s ecstatic because he’s always watching the NBA,” she says. Trey, on the other hand, is not as impressed. “It’s not that big of a deal to him,” Joy says. “He likes track and soccer. If Gary was going to be a professional soccer ball player, he would be bouncing off the walls.” There also are other strategic lessons from Gary Sr. “I’ve always encouraged him to be humble … treat people like you want to be treated,” he says. “Even though you’re talented, you’re no better or worse than anyone else. Be humble.” His lessons for his other sons? “I just want them to have fun, get a free education. Not try to be like Gary,” he says. As Gary prepares for the NBA, he says he simply wants to continue focusing on the game he enjoys. “I’m excited to get on to this next chapter in my life,” he says.

Getting Hot for Pizza Article Jeannine Lee Lake

I

s it the jalepeno peppers used in the breadsticks sauce, the cheery customer service or the high-quality ingredients that is making HotBox Pizza one of the most popular pie joints in Fishers these days? Located at 12510 E. 116th St., the 10-year-old pizza parlor is stepping up its quest to become Fishers’ number one go-to for a little slice of pizza heaven. “We want to save Fishers from pizza mediocrity,” says Mark Robbins, who co-owns HotBox Pizza Fishers with Roger Drayer and Brook Hall. “HotBox has been a welcome addition to the city because of all three of the aforementioned attributes and we hope to keep striving in all those areas.” A longtime businessman who has been chief executive officer of two other companies, Robbins is proud of the decade-old Fishers business, which often gives free pizzas and various fundraising opportunities to schools, religious groups and other non-profit agencies. One example of this is when a group recently raised funds to honor a child who died in a terrible accident while in the custody of a daycare agency. The group had raised $40,000 to build a new playground in the child’s memory and asked HotBox to help out during a day that saw the construction of the project. “About 40 fathers were on board to help this cause and to us it was a no-brainer to do our part,” Robbins says. “These are the types of events and programs that we are committed to supporting. We don’t just want to be No. 1 in sales; we want to be No. 1 in the community.” Another recent community partnership involved a first-grade class whose teacher asked HotBox to donate pizza boxes to help her class learn about fractions. The teacher allowed the kids to decorate their boxes and used each pie slices to represent various fraction problems. “That was the first time we’d had a request to use them that way 22 Fishers Lifestyle | July 2014

and we thought it was a very unique learning tool,” Robbins says with a laugh. “The kids really took their time and put their own mark on each of the boxes. The teacher then put them in the hallway so everyone could walk around and see them. It was just great!” The menu at HotBox is rather diverse. Favorites include The HotBox, which consists of double spicy pepperoni and banana peppers on red sauce; The Popeye, which has spinach, bacon, ricotta and onion on red sauce; and The Hot Chick, described online as “a lustful combination of grilled chicken, jalapenos, Wisconsin cheddar cheese, and Buffalo sauce that you might want to think twice about taking home to Mom.” In addition to traditional and specialty pizzas, HotBox offers salads like The Italian Stallion that features lettuce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, banana peppers and tomatoes. The breadsticks have just the right hint of spicy jalapeno pepper, a fantastic twist that distinguishes its sticks from other pizza joints. Robbins says he is proud of the success of the Fishers business and is excited about the recent renovations that gave the parlor an updated, modern brighter look. He and his partners take the HotBox mantra of giving back to community very seriously, but make sure they also try to bring levity and fun when interacting with families, customers and their staff. The business’ social media also reveals humor in its advertising. GetHotBoxPizza.com pokes fun at the company’s mission to eradicate mediocre pizzas. “We feed hungry Fishers families and leap tall buildings to pro12510 E. 116th Street vide catering for your local busiFishers, IN 46037 ness or school.” 317.849.4200 GetHotboxPizza.com

Imagining Your Retirement Outline a plan that fulfills your long-term goals Article Doug Sweet, Midwest Financial Group, Inc.

R

etirement has often been viewed as an ending, a time of slowing down and simplifying life after a long working career. This is changing as people live longer and consider other possibilities. In a survey of Americans aged 45 and older, 57 percent described retirement as a new chapter in life, seeing it as an opportunity to explore new options and pursue their dreams. Many pre-retirees don’t envision a traditional retirement at all, but want to reinvent their careers by entering a new field of work. Whether your own retirement is approaching quickly or remains a distant goal, it’s important to consider the lifestyle you want to attain. Clear planning and communication now could prevent disappointment down the road. Here are a few key aspects you might want to address. When will you retire? Your retirement age might be a moving target, but it helps to have an age in mind as you envision other aspects of your retirement lifestyle. You and your spouse may want to compare how your claiming ages for Social Security could affect your lifetime benefits. There are advantages to working until your full retirement age (66 to 67, depending on birth year) or until 70, when you would receive your maximum benefit. If you want to retire earlier, you may need to be more aggressive in your retirement savings strategy. Will you continue to work? Although almost seven out of 10 current workers plan to work for pay in retirement, the experiences of current retirees suggest this may be more difficult than expected - only 25% report that they have worked for pay in retire24 Fishers Lifestyle | July 2014

ment. A second career could be rewarding on both a financial and personal level, but you might be better off setting your savings goals so that working is an option rather than a necessity. Where will you live? Some people downsize their homes to reduce expenses and add some home equity to their retirement assets. Or they may move to a more retirement-friendly community or somewhere closer to family. Others prefer to “age in place” and take advantage of having paid off their mortgages. These are all reasonable options. But as with the goal of working for pay, it’s generally wise to leave your home out of savings calculations and focus on building other assets. What activities do you want to pursue? You may want to travel, volunteer for a hobby - or all of the above. With the freedom of retirement, the possibilities could be limitless. But keep in mind that some retirement activities are more costly than others and develop your savings strategy appropriately. These are just some of the many factors that might affect your retirement lifestyle. Whatever you imagine, it’s important to set savings goals that reflect your retirement dreams and have the potential to help those dreams come true. Come On Over… Just Don’t Expect Rosemary Words Sherri Coner

Y

esterday afternoon, as I was walking out to the mailbox, I waved at my neighbor… secretly hoping she would not do exactly what she did: Stroll across the road and speak to me. As she walked, I studied her cute garden gloves and sun hat, the little shovel thing in her hand and the knee guards buckled around her skinny legs. “Your plants are beautiful,” I said nicely, even though I am crazy jealous of the mystical koi pond in my neighbor’s yard, surrounded by a small jungle of lush stuff that I can’t name. And let’s not forget the gazebo nearly smothered by beautiful vines and plump white roses. Even her mailbox is cute, with stenciled letters and her last name perfectly swirled by her sickenly talented hand. Just to punish myself for the seven zillionth time, I glanced back at my own abode. My name is crooked on the mailbox, spelled out with sticky black letters. And my yard is a dead brown mess with a lone pot of marigolds on the front porch. Yep, I pretty much hate my neighbor and all other women like her. “I was wondering if you would like some rosemary,” the goddess of all things green cocked her head to the side and smiled. Speechless, I wrinkled my nose. I had no idea what she was talking about. My only connection to rosemary is the scary chick with the devil baby. “Do you cook with rosemary?” my neighbor asked. Quickly, I spewed the truth on the driveway gravel. “I can barely cook with salt,” I said bluntly. “But thank you so much for the offer.” 34 Fishers Lifestyle | July 2014

“You’re such a jokester,” she laughed. “Nope,” I shrugged. “I’m dead serious.” For many years, these moments of shame sent me into my messy, horribly decorated house with a stress headache. But not anymore. I am 54 years old and I have finally come to grips with the truth about myself. One truth is that I don’t have any skills. And I mean none. I am not a cook or a baker, a decorator or a clean freak. I am definitely not a gardener. I would also be a terrible host since guests would expect food and beverages. A couple of years ago, I even gave up hoping for a miracle. I constantly wished that I would wake up one morning and say to myself, “This is an absolutely perfect day to dabble in French cuisine.” Then I would hurry past my dining room table, where cloth napkins were tucked neatly in sweet napkin rings, next to pretty dinner plates, waiting on yet another dinner party where my guests lavished me with culinary compliments. Well the truth is that I can’t even see my dining room table. My tax papers for the last two years are stored there, along with laundry that never quite makes it to the linen closet. I have four plates, three bowls and two glasses to my name. But it’s not a problem since I live a constant picnic of a life, with paper plates and Big Gulp cups. So if you come over to visit me, expect pizza… on paper plates, of course. And we will also dine on our laps since the dining room table is out of commission.
