THE PRICE IS RIGHT DREAM COME TRUE
MOUNDS LAKE PROJECT STUDY The Mounds Lake Project is a major concern for many residents, and this month the findings of the Phase II Feasibility Study are to be submitted. The proposed dam would create a 2,100-acre lake spanning two counties and touching four communities. The objectives of this project are to provide a sustainable source of water for central Indiana with a secondary goal of enhancing community and economic development. Possible water shortages have been projected in one to three decades. The Project would provide billions of gallons of water for the region. The majority of central Indiana relies heavily on the water from three Indianapolis reservoirs (Geist, Morse and Eagle Creek), but these lakes were built between 1940 and 1970 when the population was approximately 700,000. Today, the population is at 1.8 million and the need for more water is evident. The project and the process for approving it is complex. To stay up to date on the status, visit MoundsLake.com, Facebook.com/ SupportMoundsLake or Twitter @MoundsLake.
“Trevor Peters, come on down! You’re the first contestant on the Price Is Right!” “This was my dream since I was a little kid,” Trevor Peters exclaimed to TV host Drew Carey, of the Price is Right on CBS. As a young child, Peters’ parents promised him a trip to the show when he graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School. This summer, to their amazement, Peters interviewed (alongside nearly 300 others) with the producer of the show, and was chosen. Peters was the first to be chosen and invited to come down to contestants’ row as he heard his name being called and saw TV cameras pointing at him. The producer interview was right up his alley because he is a communications major at Purdue University and a member of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. Peters feels incredibly blessed to be chosen as a contestant and win something on the show, and he now has a life-long memory. The show aired on September 24th.

Gathering to Worship at Fall Creek Wesleyan Church TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CHURCH.
Fall Creek is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational church family that has been transforming lives and communities for 20 years. We began in 1994, when Fishers was at the start of its amazing growth curve. We’re a family church that values relationships, serving our community, and life transformation through the power of Jesus Christ.
We also support six families serving in international missions, including two from our own congregation. Over the last decade, at least 10 individuals or families from Fall Creek have gone into full-time ministry as missionaries, church planters, pastors or Christian workers. The word go, as in go and serve others, really describes our congregation.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MISSIONS YOU
TELL US ABOUT SOME OF YOUR PROGRAMS.
ARE INVOLVED WITH?
Our strategy is to invite everyone to experience life transformation through six simple steps: Believe in Jesus Christ, Gather for worship, Pursue God every day, Connect with other believers, Give generously, and Go transform the world. Our programs help people—of all ages—take practical steps on that pathway. A few of the most popular programs are our youth ministry called The Mix, which meets on Sunday evenings, a Wednesday morning Bible study for mothers with their small children called Mom-to-Mom, and our Sunday morning Gather experience for kids, led by our incredibly talented children’s director, Matthew Hines. About 70 percent of our
Fall Creek is “the church that goes.” We love to get into community—and beyond—serving others in the name of Jesus. We recently completed our second Water for Life mission in Haiti, where we donated and installed a solar-powered UV filtration system that will provide up to 1,000 gallons of clean water per day for a rural community. We love Fishers too, and last year we mobilized over 10,000 hours of volunteer labor in local and regional service projects, including Christmas in Action, a one-day home improvement blitz for elderly low-income residents, food collection for our regional food bank, and serving at Wheeler Shelter for Men. 10

congregation is involved in small groups, which give you an idea how important relationships are to us. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN VISITING YOUR CHURCH?
They can expect to be transformed by the power of God and to join in transforming the world around them. If you are looking for a place where relationships matter and where you’ll be challenged to change, grow and go into the world to serve others, you’ll probably like it here. As for what to expect on a Sunday morning, you’ll find a warm welcome, contemporary music, and biblical preaching. Fully staffed childcare is available, and there are meaningful programs for kids of all ages. The atmosphere is casual, so come as you are. Fall Creek Wesleyan Church 11721 Olio Rd. INTRODUCING
Danielle Mullen REAL WIVES OF FISHERS cently, my husband and I went on our first “adults only” vacation in 11 years to Mexico with four other couples. It was a blast! Favorite date night restaurant? Cooper’s Hawk Winery
Who/what lives in your house? I live with my wonderful husband of 14 years, Matt, my beautiful 11-year-old daughter, Hannah, our spunky 5-year-old son, Jackson, and our toy poodle, Molly. Do you work outside the home? Yes, I am in my 14th year of teaching at Hamilton Southeastern High School (proud to be a ROYAL!), where I am a choral director and I teach piano class. Native or transplanted to the area? Transplanted. I am originally from Connersville, Indiana, and then my husband and I built a home here after I began teaching at Southeastern. We have since built a second home in Fishers. We love it here! What’s on the floor of your car right now? An umbrella. You always have to be prepared for any kind of weather in Indiana! Favorite ‘pamper yourself’ or splurge item? A Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, while getting a pedicure. Guiltiest food pleasure? Anything Italian, or
a Reese’s Cup Blizzard from Dairy Queen if I have a sweet craving. Title of a book on your bedside table or favorite movie? The last book I read and the last movie I watched (aside from movies rated “G” with my son) was Heaven Is For Real. My faith is very important to me, and so I loved this book and the movie. But, the book is better!
Best thing about living in our community? The many opportunities and activities it provides for our family—we love the Summer Concert Series (Dave and Rae is our favorite concert of the year), our kids participate in HSE S.P.O.R.T.S., and the schools in our district are top notch. Hannah attends Fall Creek Intermediate, Jackson attends Geist Elementary, and I love teaching at HSEHS! What do your record on the DVR? Downton Abbey and Dancing With the Stars Where do you wish your husband would buy your next gift? An airline….that would mean we’re going somewhere on vacation! Favorite sports team? COLTS!!!!
How would your best friend describe you? I asked a group of my best girlfriends this question and they said: genuine, kind-hearted, loyal, family oriented, fun, trustworthy, down to earth, faithful, awesome devoted mom and true friend. Thanks gals! You’re the best! Organization that gets most of your volunteer time? I enjoy volunteering at our church, The Promise, for such activities as VBS and for the music worship team. Best vacation ever? Our best “family” vacation ever was no doubt when our entire family (50+ of us) went to Disney World on a VIP vacation. It was amazing! Most re-
Favorite gadget or gizmo? My iPad/iPhone Unique or interesting fact about yourself or your college years? While attending Ball State University I was the 1999 Indianapolis 500 Festival Queen. It was an amazing experience! The month of May and race day always brings back such awesome memories for me. Best advice for entertaining in your home for special occasions? I love to go all out for any occasion, whether it’s the first day of school, a birthday or holiday. I love to cook so be prepared to try new recipes if you come to my house for any special occasion. Healthy Thanksgiving Turkeys Everywhere
Engage with this great family’s beautiful history and rich present to enrich your own Thanksgiving ARTICLE LISA HEIDEN PETERS | PHOTOGRAPHY LENA AND KATYA PETERS
H
ospital executive by day, farmer by early morning and night describes Ron Thieme’s work life. His family’s farm is nestled just north of the hustle and bustle of Fishers, and this time of year they see turkeys everywhere! Ron’s wife, Sally, and their three children, twins Andy and Paul, and daughter, Katie, all help manage the farm to provide amazing options for Fishers area residents to obtain naturally grown turkeys, as well as a variety of other food items. “We buy the turkeys from a hatchery in Ohio, and when they arrive they are two days old,” explains Sally. “We have two types. The Bourbon Red is a heritage breed and is highly
prized for its wonderful flavor and texture. The commercial whites are the same that you would buy at the grocery, except they taste much better because they are raised in a natural environment.” Our family thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the farm last year to “pre-select” our Thanksgiving turkey. We picked out the exact one we wanted, and then chased him around for 20 minutes before catching him so Sally could tag him. We even named him. The evening before Thanksgiving, we picked up our freshly dressed turkey. This year if you want a fresh farm-raised Thanksgiving turkey you can simply visit their website. farm goes back to 1947 when Ron’s father, Martin, bought the 100-acre property. In 1953, Martin married Catherine and the newlyweds built the home where Ron and Sally now live. Thirty-five years ago, Ron and Sally were Hamilton Southeastern High School sweethearts. They met on Band Day at the Indiana State Fair. Ron played the trumpet and Sally the flute in the high school band. Ron describes his memory of his hometown. “Fishers was very small at that time,” he recalls. “Noblesville was the major town, and much of what is now Fishers had a Noblesville mailing address.” Sally remembers Fishers consisting of one stop light, a gas station, a barber shop, Archer’s grocery store, Reynolds Farm Equipment, Nickel Plate Grill and a lumber company. After high school, Ron and Sally went to separate colleges. Ron graduated from Purdue University with three degrees: a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate focused on business, technology and agriculture. Today, he is the chief knowledge and information officer for Community Health Network. Sally attended Indiana
State University, and then married Ron when he was in graduate school. When Ron graduated, they moved to Boston, where Sally finished her degree at Framingham University, majoring in interiors merchandising. Sally worked at Skinner in Boston, one of the nation’s premier auctioneers of fine art and antiques, a passion she continues to pursue today. The two former farm kids focused completely on their city careers. When they returned to Indiana, though, that changed, and they adapted their farm to meet the current needs of the community. “As many do, we moved back to Indiana after our first kids were born, and in 2011 we had the opportunity to move back to the family farm,” Ron explains. “The local food movement was taking off, and people were becoming interested in knowing where their food comes from and how the animals are raised. In 2013 we started Hoosier Heritage Farm to help meet this need. “We are located just a couple miles from Hamilton Town Center, and we have a great opportunity to preserve rural character and provide nutritious and wholesome food to our CONTINUED >

THE HOOSIER HERITAGE FARM (CONTINUED)
The farm and their parents’ inf luence are evident in the Thieme childrens’ lives. Andy continues his mom’s love of history, attending Ball State University and pursuing an interest in historic preservation. Paul, now at Purdue studying agricultural engineering, served as president of the Hamilton Southeastern FFA Chapter and president of the FFA state band. Katie enjoys playing marimba in the Royal Command and Guard at Hamilton Southeastern High School, the same band where her parents first met.
“Located just a couple miles from Hamilton Town Center, we have a great opportunity to preserve rural character and provide nutritious and wholesome food to our local community.” -- Ron Thieme local community. We raise pastured poultry, including chicken broilers; turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas; free-range eggs and grass-fed beef. All of our animals are raised outside, in the sunshine and on the grass, as they were meant to be. We don’t feed our animals any GMOs. We don’t douse our animals in antibiotics or growth hormones—we don’t need to because they are raised as nature intended.” The Thiemes are known for giving generously to their community and to everyone who enters their farm. Sally says their family lives by a simple Bible passage: “...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). They love to open their farm so others can learn more about agriculture and rural life. They’ve hosted Future Farmers of America (FFA) soil judging teams, and several FFA teens are engaged on projects at their farm. They also host field trips.

shop smart and save big on holiday entertaining
T
he leaves are falling and the stores are decked out for the holidays. For many that means entertaining. For some, however, the excitement of entertaining ends with the cost associated with the menu. But there are ways to cut the cost considerably. Using simple saving strategies, with a little creativity and flexibility thrown in, you can host a great holiday party without busting the budget. SHOP THE SALES
Create your party menu around the grocery sales. In order to capture the greatest savings, use price matching to take advantage of all grocery sales. Price matching is a store policy honoring a competitor’s lowest advertised sales price for an identical item. Consumers save time and money because they get all the surrounding stores’ best grocery sales at just one store. Letting the grocery sales guide your menu, you can serve popular party food from Kraft, Hiland, Nabisco and Pillsbury for a fraction of the cost. For those who don’t have the time to review store circulars to create a price match grocery list there is help. A local website, KCStrategicShopping.com, does all the work. It researches and compiles the best grocery sales from more than a dozen stores into one master price match list. Consumers invest as little as ten minutes 18

COUPONS
Coupons are also a great way to supplement your price match savings and couponing is becoming much more convenient. Internet coupon sites such as Coupons.com and SmartSource.com provide easy and efficient access to great printable coupons. With these convenient sites, couponing can be as easy as print, snip and save. STORE BRANDS
Stores brands can save you up to 30 percent compared to national brands. Basic baking ingredients such as flour, sugar and high-dollar items like butter and oil can be a great economical alternative without compromising on taste. But be discriminating. There are instances when the national brand retail or sale price can be lower than the store brand. So before instinctively grabbing the store brand, compare prices. With just a few more simple strategies you can complete your holiday menu.
of your groceries and not know how to transform them into fabulous party fare. No worries. Recipe websites, such as AllRecipes.com, have search engines that allow you to enter a few ingredients and provides you with several recipe options in just minutes. Do the work yourself. Making the menu
items yourself may take a little more time but can deliver significant savings. Create your own vegetable, fruit and cheese platters and save 40 to 45 percent. By utilizing the produce on sale, plus other popular party food like Hiland French onion dip, and Kraft chunk cheese that is also on sale, you can have large vegetable and fruit platters for a fraction of the price that stores charge to create them. With these simple savings strategies you can throw an impressive holiday party without the exorbitant cost. The result is easy and affordable entertaining without sacrificing taste.

Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check A
s winter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the winter weather rages. “Many homeowners just assume the winter season means their bills will go up as systems work harder to keep their home regulated,” says Francois Lebrasseur, marketing manager of water products for GE Appliances. “In reality, there are many steps one can take to improve energy efficiency and minimize the added expense that comes with extreme winter temperatures.” According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, electricity costs are on the rise. Before winter weather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help lower your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the winter months when utility expenses can add up. New technology from GE Lighting lets you manage your lights away from home – handy if you’re gone for the day and realize lights were left on. GE Link Connected LED lights can be adjusted using an app on your smartphone. These energy-efficient LED lights also will come in handy if you’re away from home for an extended period or traveling over the holidays, as you can turn specific lights on to give the appearance that someone is home so you can vacation worry-free. If you replace a 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a 12-watt GE Link LED bulb, you would save $132 over the life of the bulb at an electricity rate of $0.11 per kWh. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra workout come winter. Cooler house temperatures may require water heaters to work harder, so ensuring you have a model well-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact,
heating water is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, with standard electric water heaters costing the average homeowner $585 every year to operate. One energy-efficient option is the 50-gallon GE GeoSpring™ hybrid electric water heater, which can save the average household $365 every year (using 1514 kWh per year and national average electricity rate of 12 cents per kWh) compared to a 50-gallon standard electric water heater (using 4646 kWh per year), as based on a test comparison. GeoSpring also offers features such as vacation mode, which lowers the water temperature during a trip, then reenergizes itself the day before the homeowner’s return. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to pre-determined temperature settings. This allows you to drop the temperature during the day when no one is home, but have a comfortable environment ready when you arrive home from work each day. Depending on the model you choose, you can select numerous settings to adjust your indoor climate for various days to fit your lifestyle patterns. According to ENERGY STAR®, when used properly, a programmable thermostat can save as much as $150 a year in energy costs. Air leaks. An airtight house is critical to managing your heat-related expenses. You take time to close windows and doors to prevent heat from escaping, but that’s only half the battle. Sealing cracks around those windows and doors, and other leak-prone areas such as the basement and attic, will help keep heat inside and costs down. Revitalize Your Thanksgiving Table TRY OUR SKINNY SIDES FOR A HEALTHIER OPTION THIS YEAR ARTICLE SUZETTE ZARA

our guests will devour our unique update on classic stuffing, featuring tasty artichokes. This “Artichoke Olive Stuffing,” a savory blend packed with parmesan, is not only delicious, but easy to make. Don’t like artichokes? Simply replace them with asparagus tips or hearts of palm. Kalamata olives make a great substitute for green olives, if you prefer, and try a bit of feta cheese with the parmesan, for a truly Mediterranean twist on this stuffing. ARTICHOKE OLIVE STUFFING
1 loaf (1 pound) sourdough bread, cubed into ½ inch pieces 2 jars (6 ounces each) marinated artichoke hearts, drained and diced 1¼ cup grated parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pound mushrooms, rinsed, trimmed & sliced 1 tablespoon butter 1 large onion (1/2 pound), chopped ¾ cup chopped celery 2 tablespoons minced garlic 20
Fishers Lifestyle | November 2014
½ cup green olives or Kalamata olives, sliced (some whole for top) 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning 2¼ cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 1 large egg Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, gently stir together bread, artichoke hearts, parmesan and rosemary; set aside. In a large skillet over high heat, melt butter and cook mushrooms, onion, celery and garlic, stirring frequently, until vegetables are lightly brown (about 15-18 minutes). Pour vegetables into a large bowl. Pour ¼ cup of broth into skillet, stir to scrape up browned bits. Add broth mixture to veggies. Pour remaining 2 cups broth over bread mixture; add poultry seasoning. Stir well to combine. Add salt and pepper. Make an indentation in stuffing; add egg. Beat egg with fork until blended; stir egg into stuffing. Gently fold in sliced olives (reserve some whole olives to place decoratively on top of stuffing, if baking in casserole). Spoon stuffing into 9-by-13-inch casserole dish. For moister stuffing, cover with foil; for crustier stuffing, do not cover. Bake about 45-55 minutes, until hot in center or lightly browned. Note: Stuffing can be made one day ahead; simply make stuffing, place in casserole, cover with foil
and store in refrigerator. Increase baking time by about 15 minutes for chilled stuffing. Yield: 8 servings. While Thanksgiving can be a diet disaster with all the heavy gravy, the high-carb rolls, and the fatty potato casseroles, you can keep dessert calories under control with this unique “Skinny Pumpkin Cream Pie.” Best of all, your guests will never guess it has half the calories and a third of the fat grams of traditional pumpkin pie. SKINNY PUMPKIN CREAM PIE
1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin 1 can (14 ounces) fat-free sweetened condensed milk ½ cup egg substitute 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg ½ teaspoon salt 1 unbaked pastry shell (9 inches) Or, our homemade pie crust LIGHT PIE CRUST:
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon salt ¼ cup cold water 8 tablespoons ice water ¾ cup vegetable shortening Crust Instructions: In a large bowl, stir together the flour and salt. Place the ¼ cup of cold water in a glass measuring cup, then add the vegetable shortening until mixture equals 1 cup of water and shortening combined. Lightly press down shortening to eliminate
air bubbles. Then, using a large spoon, gently scoop out shortening from measuring cup and add to flour mixture (discard remaining water in measuring cup). Cut shortening into the flour mixture, using a pastry cutter, until small dough balls form. Add the 8 tablespoons of ice water, one at a time, and continue mixing. If dough appears too hard, add additional water. Chill dough in refrigerator if it’s too soft. Form dough into a ball. Roll out dough, and place in a 9-inch pie pan. LIGHT CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:
8 ounces reduced-fat (Neufchatel) cream cheese 1 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Instructions: Place all ingredients in large bowl; beat until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use. Pie Instructions: Preheat oven to 425°F. Combine pumpkin, condensed milk, egg substitute and spices in a large bowl. Beat until just smooth; pour into pastry shell. Bake at 425° for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° (do NOT remove pie from oven); bake an additional 25-30 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack. Store in refrigerator. Top with Light Cream Cheese Frosting when ready to serve, and garnish with edible local flowers, such as prickly pear cactus flowers or dandelions. Yield: 8 servings. Driver’s Notebook
Porsche Macan is the Sports Car of SUVs ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
I
t only takes a few blocks behind the wheel of the Macan S to realize that Porsche has created a compelling car that marries the performance of a sports sedan, the versatility of a wagon and the off-road capability of an SUV. There is nothing quite like it at the moment, and that puts it in a class of one. Macan, Indonesian for tiger, could well become one of the best-selling vehicles in the Porsche lineup. It certainly is off to a fast start. The first year’s production is sold out, so buyers will have to wait several months for delivery. In the meantime, Porsche is offering buyers short-term leases on a Boxster or a Cayman while they wait. The Macan S has a black sideblade in the lower rocker panel that is supposed to have a stylistic connection to the 918 Spyder. For me, however, it disrupts the continuity of design

in lighter colors. The sideblade is body color on the Turbo, and that is optional on the S. The Macan, derived from the chassis platform of an Audi Q5, is pure Porsche because performance comes first. There are two models: Macan S and Macan Turbo. The S has a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6 with 340 horsepower while the Turbo has a twin-turbo, 3.6-liter V-6 with 400 horsepower. Prices start at $49,900 for the S and $72,300 for the Turbo. I drove a Macan S for a couple of days. I was impressed by the Macan’s Lexus-like lack of wind and road noise, even when zipping well past the speed limit. The audio system could be played at a soft volume even at 70 mph. One sound that can be heard is the engine. Under acceleration the exhaust has hints of a 911. It is loud enough to deliver a
tingle when the throttle is opened, quiet at cruising speed. The 340 horsepower of the S is more than adequate. It can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and has a top track speed of 156 mph. The Turbo hits 60 in 4.6 seconds and has a top track speed of 164 mph. Fuel economy is rated at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 23 on the highway. The transmission is a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic that can be shifted manually with paddles on the steering wheel. The Macan’s sports sedan handling comes in part because the rear wheels are one inch wider than those in front and the all-wheel-drive system is biased toward the rear wheels. It corners as well or better than any SUV I can recall. In low-traction situations such as snow or ice, power is diverted to the front wheels as needed. Porsche offers two optional suspen-
PRICE The base price of the test car was $49,900. Options included a trailer hitch, center wheel caps with the Porsche crest, Walnut wood trim, blind spot monitor, Bose surround sound, 14-way power seats, navigation, premium plus package and the sport chrono package. The sticker price was $64,640. WARRANTY Four years or 50,000 miles.

sion packages. One is the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus settings. The second is an air suspension that includes height adjustment and leveling. The air suspension lowers the vehicle slightly in Sport Plus mode or raises the vehicle for off-road use. Typical of Porsche, the brakes are big and strong. The cabin has a seating position that feels more like a sedan than an SUV. The console, designed like that of the Cayenne or Panamera, creates a cockpit feeling because it contains several buttons and switches for climate and vehicle settings. The instrumentation is similar to those of the 911 or Boxster. My only wish was that the numerals were lighted all the time because they were a bit dim in certain situations. Fortunately there’s a digital speed readout at the bottom of the center-mounted tachometer. The car I drove had the optional 14-way power seats and they were excellent. Under-thigh support was adjustable, and so was the fore-aft orientation of the headrest. The split folding rear seat gives several cargo options. Backseat legroom was not overly generous.
AT A GLANCE
The Macan is a compact SUV that performs and handles like a sports sedan. It sits atop a segment that is bound to grow as more manufacturers offer similar products. The ride is smooth, the cabin is quiet and the seating position feels like that of a sedan.

COUNTERPOINT: The
base price is competitive, but many items such as navigation and blind-spot monitor are optional, and that boosts the price considerably.

Parting Thoughts
Home Real Home WORDS MYQUILLYN SMITH
I
’m a creative. I pretend to be a designer. My entire job is to encourage women that they can create a beautiful, meaningful home. I’ve done it all wrong but I’m learning that it’s really not about the stuff at all, even when making a home. If I want my home to be a place of connection, I’ll ask genuine questions and get to know the people in my home. If I want my home to be a safe place to make a mistake, I’ll lower my standards for myself first, be forgiving of my own mistakes, laugh at myself—and allow others to see that. If I want my home to be inspiring, I’ll pay attention to what inspires me. If I want my home to be real, I’ll learn to embrace the imperfect, find the beauty in the undone, the broken, the unkempt, the everdayness and the mess. If I want my home to be comfortable, I’ll first stop apologizing and focus on others instead of myself. If I want my home to be a place of rest, I’ll consider my attitude and the tone I set when I am home. I’ll allow and plan for restful spaces.
26
Fishers Lifestyle | November 2014
This is the kind of home and beauty we have to fight for. Anyone can put pretty stuff in a room. It takes intention to furnish a home with grace and rest and acceptance. I’m up for the challenge. I want to see past the worst and focus on the better. I want to search for the real beauty just waiting to be recognized. I want to make a home on purpose – with purpose. I’m making home a safe, inspiring and life-giving place so we can go out and be who we were created to be. The Joneses don’t need to be kept up with, and secretly, they are tired of setting the mythical standard. Homes are there to serve people, not the other way around. May your home serve you and others so fully that it’s worn thin and beautiful in all the right places. Myqyillyn Smith is a renowned author and blogger.
