T

hankfully, Fall is here! The only thing I don’t love about the summer is the lack of basketball or football. It’s ironic because my favorite sport to play through college was baseball. I even pitched single A for a few games here in Indy. But I am not a fan of watching the game.

Fall just makes me feel good. The beautiful weather with the changing of the leaves and the hot days and jacket weather nights always puts me in a good mood. And, of course, there is football! Our high school teams have now had their well-attended annual clash on the gridiron at Hamilton Southeastern and our beloved Colts (win or lose) give us something to cheer about. I am also going for my 8th fantasy football championship in 14 years. Nice little hobby with my five buddies. Well, nice for me at least. This, our 6th issue, also gives us some things to cheer about. Our cover story on the Royals for a Cure Pink Football Game is timely due to October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a feel good story that I hope you all enjoy. You can also feel good about our Star Student J-Shun Harris, who is doing Fishers proud as a starting member of the IU football team. I coached J-Shun in basketball as a youth and know first hand that he is an even better young man than he is a football player. There is also a nice article about South of Chicago restaurant, one of the hottest spots in Fishers for great pizza. For all the women out there who have had to face breast cancer head on or for those of you who know a family member who has, Fishers Lifestyle admires and salutes all of you. We hope that you continue to read and enjoy the publication as it comes to your mailbox. If it doesn’t come to you directly, you can also read the magazine online at FishersLifestyle.com. And, as always, keep those great, fresh story ideas coming. We want you to feel good about your community and your magazine!

Catch Me If You Can Record-Setting Local Athlete J-Shun Harris All Set to Play for the Hoosiers Article Martin Freeman | Photography Provided

on’t blink. Too late and J-Shun Harris is gone. Yes. He is that fast and used that speed during his record setting career for the Fishers Tigers football team and now playing for the Indiana Hoosiers. The 5’8” 2014 FHS graduate made an impact early on as a freshman. He started the season on the freshman team but by season’s end was the starting punt and kick returner and also played some as a defensive back for the varsity. His contribution helped lead Fishers to the school’s first state title during his freshman year with a victory over Lawrence Central. Harris went on to set multiple records at Fishers including most receptions (12) in a game, longest punt return (93 yard TD), most receiving yards in a season (1,027 in 2013), career receptions (133), career TD receptions (17) and career receiving yards (2,032), to name a few. This performance lead to Harris being voted to the Indy Super Team and AP All-State team as a senior. Fishers High School Head Coach Rick Wimmer, a coach for 31 years and in his 9th year at Fishers, got a close up view of Harris for 4 years. “We knew J-Shun had talent, which is why we moved him up as a freshman,” he says. “It didn’t look like at first he would become a D1 player only because of his size, but he worked on his strength 10

Fishers Lifestyle | October 2014

and his explosion as well as set goals form himself to become what he is today. He was a very coachable young man and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach him.” After his success at Fishers, Harris was looking to make an early impact this summer during workouts with Indiana. “The speed, size and smarts of the defenders at this level are a big difference from high school but I felt like if I came in and worked hard that I could make an impact early if given a chance,” says Harris. More than that, he is starting as a true freshman as both the lead punt returner, kick returner and as a slot receiver. How is that for an impact? “J-Shun came in and we immediately knew he wasn’t just another freshman,” says IU Receivers Coach Carter Winston. “He had a demeanor to him already that was mature and ready to work.” Even with his immense talent, Harris is proving to be more than just a great player. He has also shown his ability to work hard on and off the field. “Everyone knew how talented he was and was coming from a great high school program, but we didn’t know how hard a worker he was,” says Winston. “He probably watches as much or more film on his own than almost every other wide out here.” It’s not just the coaches who have recognized Harris’s talent.

He has also quickly earned the respect of his elder teammates making it a real team effort. “Isaiah Roundtree and Shane Wynn have helped me a lot,” says Harris. “Zeke (Roundtree) and I play the same position, but he and Shane have really shown me the ropes, told me things and prepared me to play”. Off the field, Harris is a down-to-earth, well-rounded student with parents who have prepared him for football and for life. “Putting God first and not being afraid to tell anyone on any outlet,” is what stepdad Art Peterson says when asked what he is proudest of with Harris. His family lives here in Fishers with Peterson and wife Stephanie, along with support from J-Shun’s dad (also named J-Shun) in Florida, all of whom helped make Harris who he is on and off the field. “I felt really prepared to come to IU for football and academics,” says Harris. “My work habits in the classroom gave me a good base.” J-Shun Harris is off to a great start in football and in life and seems destined and prepared for a great future.

Breast Health Awareness Card Your Health is in Your Hands

T

he Breast Health Awareness card empowers women to take action with their health. The makers of the Breast Health Awareness Card envision a world where women of every age, color, demographic and culture have access to proper education and breast health awareness. Their goal is to promote early detection to increase the survival rate from breast cancer and open the lines of communication with patients and health care providers. The more we discuss and learn, the better knowledge we have to arm ourselves against breast cancer. They want to empower each woman to take her health in her own hands and have the courage to perform monthly exams. If we can encourage ourselves to do routine exams, schedule annual mammograms and enable those around us to do the same, we may save thousands of lives. Mission accomplished. The two-sided breast card contains detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to conduct a proper self-exam. The synthetic breast model on the other side includes hidden lumps deep inside, giving women an accurate representation on where to examine themselves.

The award-winning tool has been instrumental in raising awareness for women across the globe. When they learned that some women do not examine themselves for breast lumps, even those who were survivors of breast cancer, they knew the right tool was needed. After research and discussion with cancer experts, they developed that tool: a breast model with a life-like feel and realistic representation of hidden lumps. This breast model encourages women to examine themselves regularly and explains how to conduct a proper self-exam. It also reminds women about the importance of annual mammograms and urges them to discuss their breast health with their doctor. This tool has proven to be a successful resource for proper self-examinations and empowers women to take action to protect and preserve their health. Various health care professionals have been thrilled with our design and now have a useful tool to educate patients about breast awareness. One Product. One idea. Countless lives changed. Check out their website for a forum for you to share your personal experiences and raise awareness on breast health and early detection. Share your story for a free tool at WomensBreastHealth.com.

2014 Scion FR-S Code Red

Article Dennis Malcolm Byron | Photography Provided by Scion

W

hile there are numerous 2-door exotic sports cars in magazines that have both teens and adults drooling, the outrageous price tags quickly bring them to reality. Well the new Scion FR-S is a fun, beautifully designed automobile that can scratch that itch for a fraction of the price. Scion—the automaker geared to be the perfect fit for students in the 20-somethings, hipsters and value hunters who still want attractive four-wheeled transportation—does an impressive job with their sleek coupe dressed in “Firestorm” red, with chrome-tipped exhaust and projector-beam halogen headlamps. While the FR-S comes equipped with a 2.0 4-cylinder Boxer DOHC 16-valve engine powered by 200 horses, and 17-inch alloy wheels, it’s the operation by the seemingly endangered 6-speed manual transmission in the auto world that fulfills the need for an aggressive, invigorating racing experience. (There is an automatic version as well.) Rest assured, if the FR-S was fitting that need for speed, extensive safety features provide a necessary balance. This auto boasts a Star Trac Safety System; front, seat and side curtain airbags; a tire pressure monitoring system; and an overall five-star safety rating when combining top scores in frontal, side and rollover crash protection. Inside, passengers are greeted with a major upgrade in sound—a booming 300-watt Pioneer CD/HD radio complete with an auxiliary/USB port, hands-free phone capability, Bluetooth technology, and a 6.1-inch touch screen to manage everything at the fingertip. The leather trimmed steering wheel, black cloth racing-style seats with red-stitched piping, aluminum sport pedals, remote keyless entry, and a one-piece folding rear seat for extra storage space, collectively enhance its sex appeal.

Considering its numerous features, the striking exterior, top safety ratings, and decent gas mileage (25 miles combined city and highway), the 2014 Scion FR-S $24,709 price tag makes it a steal. Say goodbye to exotic sports car envy. The Basics: MSRP: $24,700 (plus $515 delivery, processing, and handling); $26,570 for automatic transmission MPG: 22 city/30 highway, 25 combined For more information, visit Scion.com

Royals for the Cure Pink Football Game

Random Act of Kindness Comes Full Circle Article Lisa Heiden Peters | Photography Lena and Katya Peters

C

hances are no one remembers which school won the coin toss in the 2011 Royals for the Cure pink football game. But what they do likely remember is the random act of kindness shown by one the officials that involved the coin itself. The Royals for the Cure pink football game is an annual fundraiser and breast cancer awareness event hosted by Hamilton Southeastern High School since 2010. Every year the entire Royals stadium explodes in pink for the game. Balloons are released, breast cancer survivors are hon-

ored, generous donations are given and collected by the freshman football team and Royals are proud to be Royals. The Touchdown Club sponsors the event. The group is made up of loyal football parents who are proud of what the pink game represents. Royals and their families are always known to give back in many different ways. Each year, the pink game has grown and so have the donations the Royals have made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In the 2011 game, Mark Bowles, a HSEHS freshman who lost his mother to breast cancer, was chosen to do the coin toss. And a beautiful thing happened immediately after the toss. The young man tossed the very old 50 cent piece in the air to start the Royals for the Cure pink football game. The official was so touched by the young teen’s story that he quietly turned to him, immediately after the toss, and told him how he had carried the old coin in his pocket and used it for many coin tosses. He told the teen to keep the 50 cent piece in memory of the game. The

teen came off the field with tears in his eyes and told the story to his 10 family members who were there to support him. The teen’s father, Mike, says it still means a lot to the family. “Mark values that coin very much. That night was a very big emotional boost in a very difficult time. That night was a highlight for him at HSE,” says Mike. Terry Adams was the game’s official. He has lived in Fishers for nearly 28 years, and just like our Royals, Adams is a “give back guy.” He wanted no credit for what he did. Adams has been an official for 32 years and officiated at two of the Royals pink games. “I used that coin on the IHSAA circuit of games for six to seven years and just felt it was the appropriate time to give it the young man as he had been going through quite a lot,” explains Adams. These three men are of quiet strength so it was only fitting that they would honor a breast cancer survivor or a family member in this capacity. Mathnasium Fishers Math Center Looks to Make Math Make Sense Article Martin Freeman | Photography

M

ath has never been looked at as a fun experience for most people. In fact, most students hate math. Patrick and Chris Lemieux, owners of Fishers-based Mathnasium, a 500+ nationwide math center and tutoring facility, are seeking to change that - one student at a time. “Larry Martinek, our company founder, has a saying that he likes to use when people say they hate math: you don’t hate math. You hate being frustrated and intimidated by math,” says Patrick. “We seek to take the intimidation factor away and make math more fun and understandable for our students”. Mathnasium, located in the strip center just north of Target off of 116th Street, is for students 2nd grade through 12th grade and works like a gym membership. Site Director Marsha Brown has an elementary education degree and also taught for 19 years at Ivy Tech specializing in developmental math. “We work on building a program around where the student’s gaps are so, as Pat likes to say, we can help the students understand why they needed a tutor in the first place,” she says. The first step is for Mathnasium to do an Initial Assessment – both oral and written - of each student by appointment. From there, an Individualized Learning Plan is developed customized to the learning needs of the student. Unlike some tutoring facilities, students who join Mathnasium can come as many days during the week as they want. The sessions are up to 60 minutes for elementary and middle school students and up to 90 minutes for high school students. There is also no work from the facility sent home and Mathnasium can help students with their own individual homework. “We have work out books or Mathnasium work out pages that help stuThe Math Learning Center dents with numerical fluency 11789 Commercial Drive and mental math skills that will help them build their confidence. open now since March and is growing and challenging students daily. They are open Monday through Thursday from 3 – 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 – 5 p.m. Mathnasuim caters to students looking to get better at math, whether they are struggling with math or are advanced students. The Fishers Mathnasium is also involved in the Fishers school system in a big way. They do a Silent Auction each year at Geist Elementary and also offer a free six-month scholarship to one student at all 12 Fishers public schools and also to four private schools in the area. “We want to engage our students mentally to make it a fun experience so participating at the school level is important to us,” says Lemieux. One fun experience this month is the 4th Annual Mathansium Trimathlon on Saturday, October 18th. It is a fun-filled math event for grade levels 2nd through 5th. The event is free to the public whether you are a member of Mathnasium or not and comes with both local and national prizes. The local winners will receive medals and the national winners receive trophies. Each participant will also receive a goody bag. South of Chicago Pizza and Italian Beef Serving Authentic Chicago-Style Pies Article Martin Freeman | Photography Provided

I

f pizza made with only the freshest ingredients is what you desire, South of Chicago is your kind of pizza. Bob Jaeger, co-owner of South of Chicago and a Chicago native, is from the old school when it comes to making a true pizza pie. He believes that real Chicago-style pizza should be a masterpiece. Not something that is made quick or without the finest ingredients. “Pizza is NOT fast food,” says Jaeger, who opened the first restaurant in Fletcher Place in downtown Indy with the urging of friends. He has a real passion for pizza. “Ask other pizza places, ‘What size mixer do you have?’ They won’t know what you are talking about because they don’t use fresh dough,” he says. South of Chicago makes its own dough daily. Its beef and sausage is shipped in from Chicago. The restaurant has been rolling in dough with its move to Fishers in the Saxony neighborhood. The response from residents to the food has been overwhelming. “It has been a great challenge keeping 20

Fishers Lifestyle | October 2014

up with the demand,” admits Jaeger, who also co-owns the Fishers location with Phil Lothamer and Edward Cobb. Due to its cooking process for the fresh ingredients, the pizza can take up to an hour to arrive at tables. Adding to the frenzy is the full bar stocked with an array of alcohol and craft beers located inside the restaurant that stays open nightly “until the fun ends.” Pizzas can be ordered deep-dish or thin crust in 14- or 18-inch sizes with deep dish being the specialty. The deep dish pizza also comes in a personal size. South of Chicago does more than just pizza, however, with homemade lasagna, spaghetti served with large homemade meatball, chicken parmesan and hot ham and cheese and meatball sandwiches. Sandwiches are made with Jaeger’s own sauces from scratch. The fun won’t end if you are looking for great pizza and a fun, lively right bar right in or near your neighborhood.

Parting Thoughts

Finding Joy in What You Do Today Words Lisa Cooke Harrison

O

ne of my life’s most important lessons came from a loss. My mom was 47 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and 50 when she died. I think about her all the time during this season of the year when so many community organizations are preparing for breast cancer-related fund raising events. From the Susan Komen Race for the Cure in mid-August, through the end of October, I sometimes feel like pink, along with the changing leaves, is a color of this season. My parents had great plans for their retirement years. They were going to travel and looked forward to having grandchildren they could babysit for long weekends in Chicago. Since the first grandchild was born ten months after she died, there were oh-somany dreams that were dashed with her passing. The lesson I take away from that loss is not to wait to do the things I want to do. I make an effort to honor my mom’s life by finding the joy in the things I have to do every day. My kids often hear me say things like “Don’t sweat the small stuff” and “Don’t

worry, it could be worse.” These aren’t phrases I remember hearing as a child but this parenting style of mine is a result of the hand I was dealt. We shouldn’t have to experience great loss in order to realize the value in finding joy in the every day. As you support a pink-related event around town this month, think about the many mothers, sisters and daughters you can honor by living your life to the fullest. When was the last time you did something for the first time? Make a plan to find joy in something today and make a plan to try something new this season. Don’t wait. Our tomorrows are not guaranteed. Her name was Joyce. Maybe that’s another reason I look for the joy…
