THE SPRAWLING BEER SCENE IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE IS BECOMING AN ENTITY AMONGST BOTH CRAFT AND CLASSIC BEER DRINKERS. The number of breweries continue to rise as craft and artisan brewers dive into the drinking sphere. In 2016, the most recent year of released data, the Brewers Association reported Tennessee was the state with the 20th largest economic impact from craft beer sales. The amount of craft breweries in the state has tripled since 2011. This number keeps growing each year, and Tennessee is beginning to get recognition for its part in the beer scene. With the emergence of innovative beer initiatives and creative twists on beer classics, craft breweries are now a staple in communities across the state. The following are three popular breweries in Williamson County and should most definitely be on your schedule for the next night out with the guys!

Mill Creek Brewery opened in 2016 at its Nolensville location. Camille Tambunting, marketing and event manager, says the brewery serves five year-round beers, with Lil Darlin’ being the most popular. It also provides seasonal beers for summer and winter. The brewery’s newest series is The Shield, which consists of single batches only and gives the brewers an opportunity to be creative. Camille says Mill Creek hosts many events and, although the brewery does not provide tours, the environment is very open and guests are welcome to explore.

Jane and Chris Hartland, owners of Cool Springs Brewery, purchased the space, which was formerly Guido’s New York Pizza, in 2008. They took a year for renovations before opening in 2009 as the first microbrewery in Williamson County. Jane says Franklin’s First, a Kolsch-style beer, is one of her favorites. The brewery typically has 10 beers on tap, including IPAs, wheat beers, a coffee stout, a coconut porter and several seasonal beers. Keeping true to the roots of the building, it also serves New York-style pizza.

Mantra has 28 taps, which includes a homemade fountain soda and cold brew coffee. The brewery provides tours for $10 per person, which includes a beer. Jordan says they host movie nights on Mondays, trivia on Tuesdays, a runner’s group on Thursdays, food trucks on Fridays and yoga on Saturday. Mantra is now a part of the beverage company Life is Brewing.

T h e Pa i n S p e c i a l i st Gil Kentof Doctor of Chiropractic ON HIS CAREER As a teenager living in Jacksonville, Florida, I injured my neck and back in an auto accident and was helped by Dr. Steven Warfield, a chiropractor who was a family friend. He, along with a chiropractor I worked for in my early 20s, inspired me to pursue a career in chiropractic. I was amazed by the results I personally received, and the philosophy that the body can heal once balanced and interference on the nervous system reduced. ON BEING A LEADER I think its important for a leader to listen! He/she must also show the team that he’s personally OK with doing what they do—doing whatever is needed to make things work: answering the phone when its busy, typing a letter and even sweeping or taking out the trash! They see a leader that leads by example and isn’t afraid to work. 22

MEN WHO’VE MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION MOVERS & SHAKERS SHARE HOW THEY DECIDED TO PURSUE THE CAREERS THEY’RE WORKING IN TODAY AND WHAT THEY THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC A LEADER SHOULD POSSESS
The G e m o l o g i st David King, Owner King Jewelers ON HIS CAREER I never had an interest in working as a gemologist. I attended the University of Pennsylvania where I studied chemistry and English literature in the hopes of attending medical school. Instead, I ended up taking the Wharton route and worked on Wall Street after graduation. After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, I moved back home to Florida to be closer to my family and ultimately fell into the family jewelry business. ON BEING A LEADER A leader needs to be empathetic in order to be successful. It’s important to be able to relate to people in a realistic, humane and down-to-earth manner. We sincerely care about our staff, their families and, of course, our clients more than we care about selling a diamond or watch. We are an integral part of many lives, and that makes what we do even more special on many different levels.

MEN WHO’VE MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION (CON TI N UED)
The Promoter Andrew Vaughn Director of Marketing & Communications, Williamson County Chamber of Commerce ON HIS CAREER I don’t think I ever decided to be a marketing and communications director. I started my career in England as a journalist, which led me to being asked to run the publicity department for CMT (Country Music Television) when they had a London office. That led me to Nashville where I worked for several record labels doing marketing and then returned to content creation for Gibson Guitars. My position at Williamson Inc. allows me to use all the skills I learned for a role that I’m passionate about since I really feel we can make a difference to Williamson County. ON BEING A LEADER A leader has to care. All the management skills in the world will mean nothing if staff do not feel valued, included and liked. We all want to belong and fit somewhere. I believe anyone working for me will feel at home and respected.
The Manager Eric Stuckey Administrator, City of Franklin ON HIS CAREER I was inspired by a public administration class taught by a city manager during my undergraduate studies, which led to me doing a master in public administration degree specifically geared to city managers from the University of Kansas. As part of the degree, I did internships in city offices. ON BEING A LEADER Through communication and listening, a leader needs to articulate three things and give people the opportunities to address them: 1. Vision and developing this together with stakeholders. 2. Values, both of the organization and of public service to build community. 3. Understanding the environment in which we live. For Franklin, the biggest challenge is response to growth while preserving its traditional characteristics. 24
Franklin Lifestyle | June 2018
The Dad Charlie Jess Owner, Cool Springs Powersports ON HIS CAREER I actually stumbled across my career path by accident. After many years in the luxury segment of the automotive industry, I was recruited by the owner of a Harley-Davidson franchise. He needed someone to implement sales processes within his existing operation. With the collaboration of others, that business developed and grew to a level beyond expectations. Years later, he sold the business and that ultimately guided me to Cool Springs Powersports. ON BEING A LEADER Through the years, my leadership style has evolved. Earlier in my career, I confused leadership with exemplifying authority. This style created many problems as well. While there is no imperfect management style, I have found, a coaching style of management yields greater results. Communication is the single most important characteristic a leader can possess. An effective leader communicates well, sets realistic goals and does so while demonstrating character and integrity.

“I THOUGHT IT WAS A REALLY NEAT THING WHEN MY PARENTS TOLD ME I WAS ADOPTED THAT THEY CHOSE ME. I HAD A GREAT UPBRINGING, AND AM ALSO VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS STORYBOOK ENDING IN FINDING MY BIOLOGICAL FAMILY.” -ROBERT KLINGBEIL
He asked his vice president and owner if they knew a Tony Thomas, and, ironically enough, they both knew Tony when he worked for Sherman Clay. Bingo. By this time, Tony had left Sherman Clay and moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, in 2008. His father had just passed away, and as he was leaving the mortuary where he had been planning his dad’s funeral, his phone rang. The conversation went something like this: Tony – “Hello?” Robert – “Hi, my name is Robert Klingbeil. I’m with Amro Music in Memphis.” Tony – “Okay. How can I help you?” Robert – “I have a random question. Did you ever hang out with a girl named Kathy Boone back in the ‘70s?” Tony – “I haven’t heard that name in a while, but yes, I did. Why do you ask?” Robert – I told him that Kathy was my biological mother and
“MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF MANKIND.” — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow No truer words have ever been spoken, especially given the fact that music is the precise reason Tony Thomas and his biological son, Robert Klingbeil—who he never knew existed until eight years ago—were reunited. Robert’s biological mother, Kathy, and biological father, Tony, attended high school together in Southern California. “Tony never knew she was pregnant,” Robert says. “Kathy’s
then said, “I believe you’re my biological dad.” Tony – “That can’t be. Kathy and I didn’t have any children.” But after listening to Robert’s response, I realized he may be right. Tony said it would be prudent for them to get paternity tests. This phone call took place in early 2010,” Tony says. “About three weeks later Robert called, confirming the positive results.” How fitting that their first meeting was at a piano store in Atlanta. “Finding out I have a biological son within days of losing my father—I was a bit overwhelmed, to say the least,” Tony says.
