WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THANKSGIVING? Do you

for? Maybe you even imagine your winnings since you placed a bet on some turkey day football. Whatever comes to mind, we all have different favorite thoughts about our traditions. But the one thing we all have in common and what makes all of these different traditions memorable are the people we share them with. Without family and friends, Thanksgiving — and the memories it conjures up — wouldn’t be nearly as

special. In this issue, we look at all of those Thanksgiving things - what local residents are thankful for, what to wear to Thanksgiving dinner, cozy spaces, traditions old and new, and even a great recipe for potato souffle. And we, dear readers, are so thankful for you! And while I will continuously always be thankful for the people I love and share life with, this year I'm also thankful for my health. Covid turned us all on our heads, so here's to also being thankful that 2020 is almost behind us! Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

HAS

A LOT GOING ON. The actress finished filming “Christmas Chronicles 2,” the Netflix original movie with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell set to air on November 25th, and she appears in “Father of the Bride Part 3-ish” on Netflix YouTube. She says of the role of Annie Banks, “Father of the Bride was life changing for me. I will always have a fondness for that role. I was 19.” An actress in film, TV (most notably “According to Jim”), and stage, producer, director, writer, even book author are among her many accomplishments. Kimberly reveals, “I love all of the mediums in different ways. I do love working fast. I love go, go , go, go.” But even busy actresses are required to quarantine during a pandemic. She says her family has really enjoyed the outdoors. “We’ve gone fishing and done lots of walking. There are so many things we can do. We’ve also played a lot of Mancala.” She adds, “I’m really grateful for my family. I’m thankful right now for our health. It’s been a scary time for everybody with the coronavirus and pandemic. I’m thankful for human connection and relationships.” In the spirit of being thankful, when asked what a Paisley Thanksgiving looks like, Kimberly says, “We tend to go spend Thanksgiving out in California. Sometimes my sister joins us but we always have Brad’s family with us. We spend the day really cooking and Brad is in charge of gravy and that’s about all I can ask him to do. Wouldn’t want him to do more than that. My mother-in-law and I make the turkey. Last few years we’ve been cheating and buying a couple things. I’m always scared about the turkey, frankly. It’s a large thing to cook and it takes a long time.” Speaking of cooking and food, the conversation turns to The Store. food insecurities and financial hardship created with husband and country music star Brad Paisley. “We originally wanted to open very slowly so that we could have proper training time. We wanted to be equipped properly, have the right amount of food and have all of our ducks in a row. We wanted people to shop with dignity, have choices, instead of just getting a handout. But then the tornado hit, and we almost immediately went in to disaster relief. Then the pandemic. Our original model had shifted. We were delivering food and we started doing curbside. We never had a grand opening or a ribbon cutting. But we just wanted to get to feeding people. There was so much need. We are serving 5 times more people that we thought.” The Store has already provided more than 500,000 meals in Nashville. And certainly while the Paisley’s frequent Nashville, they call Franklin home. Kimberly recites a list of reasons to love the area. “Great place to raise kids. Great schools. Walking around downtown. There’s still a lot of greenery. Not too far from Nashville,” adding to all the reasons she continues to be thankful.

Proton Therapy Nashville, he now knows what it’s like to be not only a doctor at the center, but a patient as well. He was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer in 2019. “I see myself as extremely blessed and privileged that I was in a situation to really understand it and to make a decision in a way that the average patient couldn’t,” says Dr. Gray. “I was also blessed that I had access to an absolute top-level technology.” Proton therapy is a form of radiation therapy, and, he says, is arguably the most advanced form of radiation therapy that we have available to kill cancer cells. “With the machine that delivers proton therapy, we can put the energy essentially more precisely on the target, whether it’s the prostate gland or a tumor in the brain,” says Dr. Gray. With the support of his family, friends, and colleagues, he felt completely enveloped in care which gave him an overall sense of calmness. “I wish I could impart that sense of calm upon my patients to allow them to feel more comfortable about going through treatments,” says Dr. Gray. “We have a great piece of equipment, we have great people operating it, and we have a great nursing staff; we’re going to take very good care of you.” His treatment, he says, went well and his PSA levels are responding nicely. Of course, as 34

he tells his patients, you have to monitor a cancer for many years to make sure it’s truly gone. “I was cursed with cancer, but it was a highly curable cancer,” says Dr.Gray. “I think it helps me empathize with someone dealing with the fear factor, but everybody’s experience is different. There are different scales of this, and I have to rely on my professional training to understand what patients go through.” Even though he was fearful when he heard the cancer diagnosis, his background prepared him for what he was about to endure. He also knew the odds were in his favor. “I could discipline myself and step back to being a statistician,” he says. “I knew what the numbers were, and how to go through this, and I thought things were going to go just fine. I’ve spent the majority of my adult life studying this disease, treating this disease, and managing patients with this disease.” He says he was fortunate to be diagnosed with the type and stage of cancer he was, and was thankful it could be managed within his busy lifestyle. He only missed two days of work while going through treatment, which also included taking hormone blocking medicine.Regarding cancer treatment, “We are getting better,” says Dr. Gray. “That means we are seeing a higher number of cure rates with a lower number of complications, but until we reach a 100% cure rate and a zero percent complication rate, we still have work to do.”

ORTHODONTIST IS TO BE ABLE TO HEAR FUN STORIES ABOUT MISSION CONTROL AT NASA, BUT IF YOU ASK DR. Chad Fowler, he will have a few from his time there. A Texas transplant, Dr. Fowler first came to Tennessee by way of Vanderbilt University where he earned his Biomedical Engineering degree and met his wife. Happily rooted in Franklin with the thriving Fowler Orthodontics, the ever positive doctor has given us five

FEELING G R AT A EFUL things that he’s thankful for:

01

His wife, Mary: She helps with the business and is encouraging day to day and beyond. She’s a main component of his positive spirit. “My rock,” as Dr. Fowler refers to her.

02

Family: Daughters Claiborne and Macon work in the office in the summer and have their mother’s same helpful and supportive spirit.

03

Patients (and their families): Patients are the “crown jewel” of his practice. Dr. Fowler’s favorite part of orthodontia is the relationships he has with his patients and their families; seeing them often allows Dr. Fowler and his team to celebrate and support patients through many life events.

04

The Fowler Orthodontics Team: “Invaluable” they are “like family” and take their jobs seriously. Beyond care in the practice, they take their “amazingly positive” attitudes into the outside world

05

Community of Williamson County and Franklin: Fowler Orthodontics is paying the generosity of their community forward. Seeking to also make an impact on others, they give back to sports and school teams and most notably support New Hope Academy.

like

Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Rhône White Blends pair delightfully with many of the dishes found on the Thanksgiving table. For example, pumpkin soup or butternut squash with brown butter and sage is a delicious match for a richly textured Chardonnay. The warmer spices of autumn, like nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, are complementary to this style of wine, as many have similar notes interwoven with toasted oak nuances.

REDS Pinot Noir, Beaujolais and lighter bodied Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley make excellent companions to the savory, herb-inflected dishes at a typical Thanksgiving feast. The elevated acidity, as well as the nuances of mushroom and dried herbs, make these wines stellar accompaniments, keeping your palate refreshed while elevating the complementary notes found in the food.

ROSÉS In years past, most people wouldn’t think to pull out their favorite rosé to

LAMBRUSCO + MOM’S SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

Fuller-bodied rosé made with Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are excellent matches for the richer foods that make their way to the holiday table, the juicy acidity keeping your palate from becoming tired and overwhelmed from all the sumptuous dishes.

5 Things to Know About

Allie Colleen

ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA

Her latest single is “Ain’t the Only Hell My Momma Raised.”

“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a singer/ songwriter. I started studying and writing poetry when I was 8 or 9 and I just fell in love with it. My parents got me a guitar and I think I just stared at it for a couple of years. I picked it up in high school and that’s when the songwriting started picking up for me.”

She lived in Franklin and graduated from Belmont University. “I lived in an apartment on Franklin Road with a friend when I went to Belmont. I loved it. I used to go to the liquor store Moon because they had the best candles. It’s a really cool little place.”

You might be able to catch her playing at her husband’s restaurant, Swaney Swift’s in Gallatin. “My dream is to play at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa. I saw my first concert there. I got to open for Pat Greene there, but I still have to reach my bucket list goal to headline there. It was my place where I fell in love with music as a listener.”

She has 16 tattoos. “The latest is a peace sign on my leg. It has every skin color so it’s kinda like a world peace thing. I have two full sleeves and those are my babies.”

Her Dad is country music superstar Garth Brooks. “My Dad has the brain of an athlete. Whether it was math homework, or singing or learning guitar or soccer or whatever it was, he always said, ‘Put your head down and run.’ Everything came down to hard work. It’s taken on a different life for me now that I’m older.”
