Dads, granddads, uncles, any of the male role models in our city who serve as mentors: Thank you for the role you play in raising up the kids in our community. Whether you coach a sports team, help out with homework, or work extra hard to lift up those in need, we want to take this month to celebrate your efforts. In this issue, we spend the day with Dennis Quaid. You know him as an award winning actor, but did you know he's also a musician? He recently moved to the area and is now working on a gospel album. We caught up with him on a day he was recording. We also peek into Blockhouse, a hair salon catering to men. Mix one part cool atmosphere, and one part bar and the result is an experience at Blockhouse.

Being new to Franklin and first-time home buyers, we needed someone who had the right combination of knowledge and experience in this area. We wanted someone who saw us as more than just another client. The minute we met Jennifer, we were instantly family. Not only did she take great care of us, but she made the process fun and easy. That was over ten years ago, and we are in our third home, all with Jennifer by our side. It is so rare to have your expectations exceeded, but that is exactly what our experience has been. I would never buy or sell a home without Jennifer Bickerstaff leading the way!

SCOTT

STALLINGS’

WORKOUT ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE

SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST IN GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his love of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. “You only get one body,” he says. “Golf is a grind, but don’t let physicality get in the way of your game,” Scott says.

5 THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT THE BLOCKHOUSE HANGING OUT AT THE MEN’S SALON AND BARBERSHOP

1.

1. ALL MEN ARE WELCOME. “Our vision was to see a plumber sitting next to a CEO sitting next to an accountant,” says Matt Fine, co-founder and hair technician. “We want to be able to serve all different types of people and make them feel included and valued while they’re here.” It’s a family place, too. You’ll see a grandfather with his son and grandson sitting together getting their hair done. It’s a place for multiple generations to make new traditions and meet new people.

2.

2. THEY WERE THE FIRST IN NASHVILLE TO BE BOTH A LICENSED FULL SERVICE BAR AND BARBERSHOP. A fresh haircut plus a delicious drink equals the ultimate pampering experience. As soon as you walk through the doors, you’re greeted by the bartender who will check you in for your appointment and offer you a drink from their abundant wall of liquor.

3. THEIR TAGLINE IS “COME EARLY, STAY LATE.” It’s encouraged to take a break and socialize like a barber-

shop back in the day. There’s no time limit or rush for you to leave. Men come in 30 minutes before their appointment to

have a beer or mixed cocktail. Afterwards, they’re welcome to relax in the lounge or at the bar to watch a game on one of the TVs.

industrial setting for their brand. The spiral staircase, natural wood bar, and high ceilings create the perfect ambience for

getting your haircut. The barbershop is in a connected room through a gorgeous barn door and its large glass windows make the space feel even more open.

5.

5. THE TEAM IS PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND GRATEFUL TO SERVE THE FRANKLIN COMMUNITY. Matt Fine has been cutting hair for over 15 years and loves what he does. The relationships made between The Blockhouse hair technicians and their clients are special and unique. Their clientele has grown organically because of their excellent service. They want everyone to leave feeling more confident. Matt says, “We’re this tiny entity that serves a greater population, so to have them come to our doors is an honor.”

WE KNEW THE NOW WOULD BE AN OASIS FOR NEXT-LEVEL RELAXATION AND HEALING MASSAGES, AND A PERFECT FIT IN HISTORIC DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN WITH ITS COOL CULTURE OF SHOPS, ART GALLERIES, AND RESTAURANTS.

W

e recently caught up with Mark and Luke Cianciolo, father-son Franklin

franchise

owners at The NOW Massage, and Gara Post, co-founder and chief creative officer, and

learned

some

fun facts about this successful boutique spa in the heart of downtown Franklin.

Q: EXPLAIN THE NOW MASSAGE CONCEPT AND WHY IT IS SO SUCCESSFUL. Gara: My husband Jason and I co-founded The NOW in Los Angeles because we saw there was a void in the marketplace for high-quality massage services. Our design incorporates raw elements and natural materials that align with nature, making it feel like a beachside escape. We offer three types of services that use Swedish massage as a base. The NOW is the most typical Swedish-style service, The Stretch is sports-inspired, and The Healer is our energybalancing massage. Q: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BRING THE NOW TO NASHVILLE, SPECIFICALLY FRANKLIN? Mark: We knew The NOW would be an oasis for next-level relaxation and healing massages, and a perfect fit in historic Downtown Franklin with its cool culture of shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Gara: Nashville was high on our list for national expansion, being one of America’s fastest growing and most vibrant cities. Mark’s background in health and wellness, coupled with Luke’s warm and welcoming energy, made them the ideal candidates to bring The NOW’s lifestyle brand to Franklin. Q: DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO EXPAND TO OTHER STATES. IF

-- MARK CIANCIOLO, FRANKLIN FRANCHISE OWNER

SO, WHERE? Gara: We currently have more than 70 new boutiques planned across the U.S including Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, and Raleigh to name a few! Q: WHAT IS YOUR NUMBER GOAL AT THE NOW? Luke: Our goal is to make getting a massage as simple as possible. From booking online or on The NOW app to the extra savings received with a Ritual Membership, it’s all designed to help people unwind and stay soothed. You can even shop The NOW’s product line to maintain that calm, vacation state-of-mind. There’s never been a better time than NOW to book your massage and enjoy some peaceful, relaxing pampering! the main artery from the 1700’s to Nashville that runs north and south near Mackinaw City, Michigan all the way to Mobile, Alabama. This state road was built in 1926 and part of the original United States Numbered Highway System. For locals, this stretch of highway is simply referred to as Franklin Road, or just Main Street. Finally, what takes Franklin Road Apparel to the highest level of cool is the fact that it is owned by champion race car driver, Ken Thwaits, who races in Pirelli’s Trans Am Series as owner of Showtime Motorsports. Ken grew up in Los Angeles, and his love of racing began when he was a teenager. With over three decades of racing success, along with test-driving vehicles for Nissan, and owning a fantastic collection of 25 classic Camaros, Ken was ready for a new challenge.

So why would he decide to open a retail men’s store? Ken says, “Downtown Franklin was just ripe for a men’s boutique. I would go shopping with my wife and was left standing on the curb waiting for her. Men needed a place to go hang out and shop so Franklin Road Apparel was a logical solution. I have no retail experience, let alone any apparel experience. But I just went for it, went with my gut and just look what we created!” The store is located at the end of the Five Points intersection of Franklin Road between 5th and 6th Avenue North. Ken loved this location for several reasons. He explains, “The Firehouse just has a masculine aura to it. So the fit was perfect. I’ve kept the radio tower and made a light fixture hanging from the rafters. There are other memorabilia that I acquired from friends who are with the volunteer fire department. so you want to buy a farm? FARMS ARE A HOT COMMODITY RIGHT NOW

HUSBAND AND WIFE EDDIE WILSON AND CINDY GARVEY BOUGHT THEIR FARM THREE-AND-AHALF YEARS AGO, AND TODAY IT’S A “PICK YOUR OWN” BLUEBERRY FARM. Beulah Land Blueberries, located along the South Harpeth River, has over 140 blueberry bushes on its 21 acres. Eddie works the land full time and still finds time to make amazing furniture out of reclaimed barnwood. Cindy, a local real estate broker and owner of United Country Real Estate Leipers Fork, stays busy selling farms, land, estate homes, recreational property, and equestrian properties. “Buying farms is now more popular than ever,” she says. “People are looking for more space. If they were locked up in their homes during COVID, they were buying pieces of land, even if it didn’t have a house on it, just so they could have someplace to go outside and breathe.” Some buyers prefer land that already has a house on it, while others prefer to build their own. Many people want a place where they can have some animals, such as mini donkeys, horses, goats and chickens, while others want as little upkeep as possible.

SO YOU WANT TO BUY A FARM? (CONTINUED)

Depending on the types of crops and animals people want to have - or not have - farms can be a lot of work or just a place to have a lot of space, relax, and enjoy nature. Before deciding to buy a piece of property or a farm, Cindy says people should ask themselves what it is they really want to accomplish. “Do they just want privacy, do they want to be in the woods, do they want a piece of land that has some open space and pasture area for animals, or is that not important to them? So they have to know how they are going to use the farm.” While some of the land she sells is already set up as farms, others are clean slates that people can make into whatever types of farms they want. She says about 90% of buyers who walk through United Country Real Estate’s doors want a little bit of pasture, a little bit of woods, and a creek or pond or some kind of water on the property. “I have a single young lady who is closing on her farm today and she wants to have horses, so she’s buying a piece of land that’s half pasture and half woods with a creek.” Buyers are of all ages, she says, and while younger people may want to have an actual working farm, older people mostly want something that isn’t going to need a lot of maintenance. “They can clear a bit of land for a house, and maybe a shop or extra garage, and leave the rest to nature.”

66

Franklin Lifestyle | June 2021

Some farm buyers also have an interest in homesteading, which is creating a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. “It’s trying to make your farm as self-sufficient as possible, such as having your gardens set up where you can grow your own vegetables, maybe having well water or spring water instead of relying on city or county water, and possibly adding solar panels on the roof or property.” Williamson County, in her opinion, is the best county to live in. “There are just beautiful rolling hills, and then you have the bigger hills that you can see in the distance that are just breathtaking.” It also has award-winning schools and low taxes. Cindy has been selling farms for over 32 years, and she says inventory is very lean right now. “It’s slim pickings these days since they are in high demand. If we don’t have the inventory for what buyers want, I’ll do my best to find them what they want. And I wouldn’t let them buy a place that has any problems such as flooding or if I know of a highway being built nearby.” LeipersFork.com

example is painted in Oak Green and sits on 20/21” Carrera Exclusive Design wheels. The look is as refined and dignified as a three-piece suit. You engage drive and set off, again, drama free. It takes only a few seconds to familiarize yourself with all the controls, everything works and is located precisely where it should be. As a professional car photographer, I do this all the time. I’m very fortunate to have driven just about every fast and interesting car you can think of. In terms of intuitive design, the 911 is in a class of its own. There is, of course, a touch screen but there is a button for everything used with regularity. No need to take your eyes off the road to scroll through endless menus to adjust the temperature. This same sense of intuition translates to the way the 911 drives.

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK (CONTINUED)

The Drive Select button on the right of the steering wheel has five modes: Normal, Sport, Sport +, Individual, and Wet. In normal mode, the 911 Carrera S is as pleasant and predictable as southern California weather. With each turn of the dial comes a significant change in aggression. Shift into Sport + and the bullet quick PDK gearbox downshifts, the exhaust note is boosted, and the steering weight becomes heavier. In the center of the mode dial is another button: “Sport Response.’’ This button can be pressed at any time in any mode and it delivers 20 seconds of everything turned up to 11. Cruising along in normal mode and want to pass a Sunday driver? Press Sport Response, apply throttle and the 911 lights the afterburners leaving everything in its wake. Everyone knows the 911 is fast, but the 911 Carrera S is so fast that it is commonly road tested alongside exotic cars that fetch double or triple the price tag, and it rarely loses a head-to-head comparison. The experience of driving the new 911 is sublime. The ride is firm without being harsh and the handling inspires pure confidence. What stands out about this car is the complete lack of compromise. The 911 is a supercar that can be driven every day in any situation and is just as capable around town as it is on the racetrack. There are a few misses, the tire roar is ever-present at highway speeds and the infamous “shaver” shifter is a bit odd but after driving the new 911, my lasting impression is this car is as close to perfection as I’ve ever experienced. Anyone with knowledge of motorsports knows that Porsche loves to race and has more overall wins at Le Mans than any other brand, so if perfection is a moving target, the 911 is closing in fast.

INFLUENCER SOUTHERN FATTY. The name, not meant as an insult, was given to Fryman in college as a joke by his roommates. As the only one in the group who cooked, and the only one from the South—all his roommates were from the North—Fryman introduced his friends to fatty, southern foods and the rest, as they say, is history. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH FOOD? I grew up around a food-centered family. My mom's side is all from Georgia and my dad's side is from Kentucky. I grew up in Kentucky. I grew up in a house where my mom made me sit down for dinner every single night with the whole family. And I think it kind of clicked. We'd sit in there and watch her cook. I would help her. I've always enjoyed cooking and baking and that's probably how it turned into this outlet now.

CULACCINO ADDS TO THE RESTAURANT LANDSCAPE

RAISED ALONGSIDE SICILIAN GRANDPARENTS, FRANK PULLARA SPENT A LOT OF HIS CHILDHOOD IN THE KITCHEN COOKING AUTHENTIC ITALIAN RECIPES. "I love just cooking pasta, and making ragus and sauces. There's a lot of finesse to making pasta." The early memories of cooking with his grandparents shaped his first solo restaurant endeavour, Culaccino, located in downtown Franklin on Main Street. Pullara says, "I wanted to pick an area that had an up and coming restaurant scene, and Franklin was a great opportunity. I fell in love with this area - just walking up and down the street and feeling how welcoming everyone was." Frank originates from Mequon, Wisconsin where he studied culinary arts through the American Culinary Federation's apprenticeship program, working his way up from sous chef to executive chef.

Luckily, I have a lot of wood burning equipment. And I have a great neighbor at the Bakehouse who let me use her kitchen. I was running up and down the halls between the two places. It was fun. We got through it and the guests never even realized a thing. Afterwards, I was like 'wow.'" And while Pullara would love to open more restaurants in the middle Tennessee area, he says, for now, "I feel very lucky and very fortunate. Everything has fallen in to place."

DIGITAL

CURRENCIES, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS CRYPTOCURRENCIES, ARE IN THE NEWS NOW MORE THAN EVER. They likely confuse a lot of people…. so we sought some help to break it down. Franklin Lifestyle spoke with cybersecurity consultant and cryptocurrency advisor, Anca

Pop of Nashville. Anca is the founder and CEO of 365 Striker, a firm that advises companies on information security and data protection. Additionally, she advises companies on institutional cryptocurrency investment and adopting blockchain technologies. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPLAIN CRYPTOCURRENCY TO SOMEONE WHO IS UNFAMILIAR? You may have heard of a few. The most probable being the original cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, but there are other popular cryptocurrencies in circulation. Most of these currencies share a couple commonalities. They are digital and without physical representation. They are built upon a digital ledger technology called blockchain allowing them to be traded securely and without the interaction of third-parties. Anca says she takes two approaches to explain cryptocurrency to newcomers. “I sometimes compare it to a stock,” she says. “You look at each token as a component of a company. They all have products behind them.” She says she will also explain that cryptocurrency is simply further digitizing our world. “We’re actually virtualizing everything,” she says. “It’s the same idea with money and

VIDEO SURPRISE

01

Buy a scrapbook, and create a record of memories about you and your dad. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you’ve had together. Also include other memorabilia such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those special times with him.

MEMORIES OF DAD

Make a “World’s Best Dad” video he’ll treasure for years to come. Put on your brainstorming cap for your own ideas, or try some of these ideas for your video. Share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do skits. Get the whole family involved and conduct interviews with each other with Dad as the main topic. Don’t forget your props such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions, including sports trophies or equipment, to add a personal touch. Most importantly, be sure to let him know just how much he means to you. 102 Franklin Lifestyle | June 2021
