“Justin is the best. You could not ask for a more knowledgeable estate attorney. He helped my father with his will and trust. We just finished my will and trust. He listens to everything you have to say, then comes up with a way to incorporate your needs and wants into legal terms. Thank you so much Justin. It was and is a pleasure to know you.” --Janis, Thompson Station, TN resident

Every home tells a story. From the chipped red bricks on the side of the house to that one window in the back that just won’t shut correctly, every home has its own story. And there’s one thing we have all learned for sure in the last two years, home has become more important than ever. We’ve spent a lot more time in our homes and it’s changed our priorities and our lifestyles. Everyone is busy making themselves and their homes more comfortable. All that to say, I enjoyed putting this, our Home issue together. From equestrian design to historic homes to home services, we’ve got you covered. We sprinkle in some DIY-ers, Brad and Holly Lauritzen from Our Faux Farmhouse and some impressive turf designs from Music City Turf. Add to that a roundup of home decor stores in Franklin and shopping for a home on HGTV’s ‘House Hunters.’ But we wouldn’t be Franklin Lifestyle without our favorite celebrity feature, and this month we talk to Kiefer Sutherland about his new album and his upcoming show at our treasured Franklin Theatre. Exciting for sure! We always hope that each and every issue inspires you in some way, and this issue is no different. We hope that you can draw a little home inspiration from the stories this month and trigger those imaginations to help tell your home’s story. Warmly,

Half Way Market And Diner Finds New Home on Main Street
Williamson County Animal Hospital Receives Statewide Recognition
Eric Dilts Joins The Franklin Theatre As Managing Director
After closing for two years, The Half Way Market and Diner has reopened its doors at 1419 West Main Street, a new Franklin location for the eatery. Previously located at 3101 Southall Road, the restaurant lost its lease. Owner Kellye King told The Tennessean she was given a 30-day notice by the former landlord that the lease was ending.
Williamson County Animal Hospital’s senior partner, Dr. Shaun Reynolds, DVM, has been recognized as the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association’s Practitioner of the Year. The award was presented last month. Williamson County Animal Hospital (WCAH) has been providing small-animal, walk-in veterinary services since 1975. Dr. Shaun Reynolds joined the locally owned practice in 1994, and now co-owns WCAH with brother Dr. Forrest Reynolds, DVM.
The Franklin Theatre, a division of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, TN, is pleased to announce the hiring of Eric Dilts as its new Managing Director. In the role, Dilts will be responsible for leading the nonprofit’s programmatic and operational business including spearheading community engagement and guest relations initiatives. Most recently, Dilts was the Executive Director of the Nashville Jazz Workshop, a venerable nonprofit music education institution with its own live jazz performance venue in Nashville.

For Kiefer Sutherland, returning to perform in Franklin is nostalgic. "I've got quite a long history with Franklin. At 17-years-old, I shot a movie called 'At Close Range' with Sean Penn in Franklin, around 1984 or '85. I've had the luxury of watching Franklin grow up right alongside me. So there's something really comforting about Franklin to me. I was there for at least three months making that movie and I have a real soft spot for the town in my heart." He continues, "[The Franklin Theatre] is one of my favorite venues in the country. I've always loved it. You've got great music listeners." What we'll be listening to are songs from Kiefer's third album, Bloor Street. "I'm very happy with the new album. For me, melodically, it's a very different record. This is the first album I made with the band I actually play with. And we made it during Covid. There's something about the album that's kind of freeing."

“In 2002, I started a small label called Ironworks. We had a lot of great artists coming through. I did start writing a lot during that time. I’m moved very much by visual images that will trigger a thought or a memory and I just follow that down a road.”
Sutherland spent much of his childhood in Toronto and big things happened for him on Bloor Street. He says, "The intersection of Bloor and Younge Streets in Toronto is where everything kind of happens. I grew up there and there was a lot of freedom then. A lot of my firsts happened on those four corners. The first job I ever had was there, the first meaningful kiss was right in front of a subway stop at Bloor and Young, the first time I started busking on a guitar was on those corners. All of these kind of wonderful moments that help you get from a boy to a young man all happened for me in this area. So I wrote a song about it." 'Bloor Street' is one of 11 songs on the album navigating a range of emotions, from romance to nostalgia and from heartache to imaginative fictional narratives. Sutherland, a masterful storyteller, explains how he came to love both the guitar and songwriting. "I remember when I was seven, I really wanted a guitar. My mom said 'If you continue to play the violin until you're 10, I'll get you a guitar. To her credit, she was true to her word and got me a guitar. And I never picked up a violin again. But I did get my first acting job because I

could play the violin! But the guitar was the instrument that I ended up loving. It felt really natural and I just carried it with me everywhere. It was something I could sing to and it is something that has been a best friend." He continues, "In 2002, I started a small label called Ironworks. We had a lot of great artists coming through. I did start writing a lot during that time. I'm moved very much by visual images that will trigger a thought or a memory and I just follow that down a road. I started to be really confident writing about what's right in front of me. Being aware of what's around you has helped me immensely in being able to translate an idea to something that's more tangible. My songs are my personal expression of the kind of experience that i've had. That's what I have to offer." In addition to his music career, Sutherland will be returning to the screen soon. He'll be starring alongside Chris Pine and Ben Foster in the upcoming film, ‘The Contractor’ and will play Franklin D. Roosevelt in the limited Showtime series ‘The First Lady’ in an allstar cast that also features Viola Davis, Gillian Anderson and Michelle Pfeiffer.

LINDSAY HUNTER DESIGN
Warm and unassuming, Lindsay Hunter is the interior designer you’d design for yourself - client-focused, creative, attentive, and genuine with a touch of refreshing humor. An avid equestrian from a young age, Lindsay wanted to be a designer her entire life. 1. Even the thought of hiring a designer can be daunting. Please walk us through how you can help, and best times to bring you into a project? I think from the inside out, and quickly realized designing was my niche. I look at the layout of the space. I get very personal and learn how you and your family live and function. In a kitchen design, Who cooks? Who cuts veggies and where? Where are the cutting boards going to go? When that person is cooking, who is over on the couch? How will they communicate? And there is always something we can do – even with the smallest parameters, “yes, there is a way.” 2. What does equestrian design mean? And can I hire you if I don’t ride horses? For me, its an extension of the way I feel at the barn and I want to continue that feeling. I use lots of greens, browns, blacks, saddles, and boots. I like to layer and create the layers that occur in nature with grasses and trees. Being an interior designer for almost 20 years, it wasn’t until 2019 that I chose to combine my two passions. And most importantly, yes, I’m happy to work with anyone. Riding horses is not required! 3. For those of us not familiar with equine, can you give us some fun insight? Horses spend a lot of their time in a mediative state. Often, they will only connect when you meet
them with an energy that makes them feel safe. Horses have an amazing way of giving you what you need. Alice, the horse I had from age 16-36, took my energy and absorbed it, like a mother. My current horse, Remi, reflects my behavior and energy back to me like a mirror, teaching me to be mindful and present. 4. Can you give us a few design tips? • Invest in quality pieces. Don’t cut back on quality to finish a room; cut back on scope temporarily. • Choose things you love. If you really love something it doesn’t matter if its trendy or not, chances are you will love it in five years. • Paint. Biggest bang for your buck, period. 5. What is one of your favorite projects or spaces? My bedroom. I was able to bring my passion for the equestrian lifestyle into my home and share my personal journey with horses. I connect with people because I bring my passion into my design and I help others bring their passion into their homes. I believe it sets me apart and the equestrian community has really connected with that. Lindsay focuses on more than making a “pretty room.” Her clients really benefit from her unique talent expressing their passions and telling their story in the design. Happy to take her work outside of the home, she’s the perfect person for custom tack room and other equine needs. Follow Lindsay on Instagram at @lindsayhunterdesign. TOGETHER WE CAN ENSURE EVERY CHILD HAS A HOME AND A SENSE OF BELONGING
"A RISING TIDE LIFTS ALL SHIPS. WHEN ORGANIZATIONS ARE WORKING TOGETHER ON THE SAME PROBLEM, WITH THE SAME GOALS, WE SEE MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT. RIGHT NOW, WE NEED MORE FOSTER FAMILIES IN OUR STATE, SPECIFICALLY THOSE ABLE TO SAY ‘YES’ TO TEENAGERS, AND BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO NEED TO STAY TOGETHER." —EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR KRISTIN ALLENDER
The state of Tennessee has over 8,500 children who are in the foster care system through no fault of their own, with the number continuing to increase rapidly post-pandemic. Of these children, approximately 400 are legally free for adoption, and the rest need a loving, safe, and supportive foster family to care for them while they wait to go home to their biological families. While these statistics are daunting, together the people of Tennessee can make a significant difference. Says Tiffany Kelley, Associate Director with Tennessee Kids Belong, “Regardless of your occupation, skillset, and talents you have a unique ability to serve and impact foster care in a positive way. We can help individuals and families navigate the steps and provide support to those who say ‘yes.’” Since launching the Tennessee chapter of the I Belong Project™ in 2016 with the Department of Children’s Services, Tennessee Kids Belong has created individualized videos for over 600 children, with close to 400 kids now in their forever homes. Taking its mission one step further, Tennessee Kids Belong is helping lead TN Fosters Hope, a statewide collaborative campaign launched last year engaging state agencies, community organizations, the business community, and churches to elevate high-quality care and opportunities for children and families impacted by foster care and adoption. They identify “four spheres of influence” - business leaders, faith leaders, creative leaders, and government leaders who individually or collectively can make a meaningful impact in the lives of these children. Tennessee Kids Belongs works to build foster-friendly communities by engaging local churches, businesses, community organizations, and government officials to support all children and families impacted by foster care. Notes Executive Director Kristin Allender, “While there are a variety of reasons for high turnover in foster parenting, one oftencited reason is totally preventable - lack of community and social support. We believe that can change and every facet of our communities can be part of the solution.” Churches, for example, can begin to wrap around each child and family in foster care, businesses can offer opportunities and discounts that allow children to be children, and foster parents are able to practice self-care so they can continue fostering – resulting in there being enough homes in a community so teens aren’t being placed hours away. Says Tiffany, “We have a desperate need for more families to step up. We are all in this together, and together we can make a difference. We are doing everything we can to equip the community to drastically improve the experiences and outcomes for children in foster care.” TNKidsBelong.org TNFostersHope.TN.GOV

BUILDING A LUXURY HOME SHOULD BE A LUXURY EXPERIENCE I would classify working with the Legend Homes team, from our initial concept meeting to completion, as my most seamless build. This is my seventh luxury home build experience and my favorite home to date. When dealing with hurdles brought on by the pandemic, the Legend group of professionals were always prepared to shift to ensure my dream home would be to my specifications — quite the feat when dealing with a noted perfectionist like myself who has high standards and discerning taste. Since my first visit to a Legend Parade home years ago, I knew we would work together in the future. I don’t believe there is much that could top this wellthought-out concept of a one-level living home and my great experience with Legend Homes. Bridgette Tatum Tops the Charts
ARTICLE BY BRIANNA M E L ANSON

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
Songwriters who move to Nashville dream of having a story like Bridgette Tatum’s. She co-wrote a song that became number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. The year was 2008. “She’s Country” got in the hands of Jason Aldean. While we were jamming to the song on the radio, Tatum’s life was changing before her eyes. She was slinging T-shirts on the road when she caught the attention of songwriter Danny Myrick after performing “Whipping Post” and some of her originals with her iconic raspy vocals. She and Danny started writing together at Jeff Steele’s office. She was pitching idea after idea, shooting her shot, but they were all “blanks.” Until one day she was running errands with the windows down on Moores Lane, she felt a tune coming that made her bob her head and blurt out, “She’s a hot little number in her pick-up truck, daddy’s sweet money done jacked it up.” She pulled over into the Target and wrote out the lyrics on her phone. Danny immediately saw the song’s potential and started working on a hooky riff and finished out the lyrics with her. They submitted the demo and Michael Knox, Jason Aldean’s producer, put it on hold. Bridgette says, “It was like waiting for a baby to be born because it was a nine-month process before they said ‘yes, we’ve recorded it, it’s going to the CMAs, he’s going to perform it, it’s going to radio the next day, goes for downloads that night, and we’re shooting a video next week.’ Luckily, I was sitting down when he told me that.” Jason studied the lyrics for months and only sang the song a few times before it debuted at the CMAs. At the time, the phrasing Bridgette used was fresh and raw to country music. She recalls the night of the CMAs, waiting for her song to be heard nationwide, “I never wanted George Strait to shut up so bad in my life and I love George Strait, but I knew Jason was coming on right after him.” This hit ultimately influenced the sound of Jason Aldean and the genre of country music. This recognition allowed her to go on to write songs for country favorites like Gretchen Wilson and Randy Houser. She recently wrote “Jealous of the Sky” with and for Ashley Cooke, who is currently touring with Cole Swindell. Catch Bridgette Tatum and Friends performing these songs monthly at Fozzy’s Spring Hill for their #1 songwriter series. In the midst of various musical projects, Bridgette developed a mentoring service for aspiring songwriters so that they too could achieve success. Songwriting isn’t something you can master, but it’s important to study and hone your craft when you’re trying to stand out from the other extremely talented musicians piling into Nashville. She organizes a plan for them and helps them find their unique voice. Together they’ll create a collection of songs that fits the student’s personality and audience, and then she’ll produce the music. CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Bridgette is becoming a leader in the music industry. Launching soon, she and her business partner and fellow songwriter T-Ray, established their own music publishing company, SoNash. Upcoming artist, Emma Zinck, is the first to sign, with more artists and songwriters coming soon. It’ll be exciting to hear what’s created there and see how they will impact the music scene. That’s not all Bridgette is working on. Something huge is coming close to Downtown Nashville. A venue like Nashville’s never seen, and it’s all Bridgette’s concept. Expect an elevated restaurant lounge feel with live music and delicious fusion southern food. She says, “It’s going to connect the people of the Johnny Cash days to the people of today.” It’s tough work building an empire. Bridgette’s able to find peace and prayer in her chaotic schedule at her Maury County meets Williamson County farm with her two horses, Jack and Buttermilk. She’s grateful to have been part of the Williamson County community for nearly 25 years. BridgetteTatum.com

“How-deeeeee! I’m just so proud to be here!” There is only one woman associated with that famous greeting, Minnie Pearl. What if we told you America’s beloved Minnie Pearl’s mother, Fannie House Colley, started out at 1051 W. Main Street in Franklin? Minnie’s maternal grandparents, William and Ophelia House, lived in the stunning 1873 Queen Anne Victorian beauty after they got married. William was a prominent lawyer in Franklin for 25 years. The couple was popular in social, professional, and religious circles. Ophelia was a well-educated and accomplished pianist. They had eight children, including Sarah’s mother, Fannie. For the past 30 years, this historic home has been occupied by Dr. John and Barbara Faccia. Originally from Italy, Dr. Faccia and Barbara, who is Canadian, enjoyed raising their two daughters here, along with their dog, Annie, and parrot, Elliot Nest. They have recently made the decision to sell the home. From Minnie Pearl: An Autobiography, Sarah described her parent’s hometown, “Franklin was a sophisticated, social little town, and still is. It was settled around 1799, much earlier than Centerville, which made it very different. The lifestyle in Franklin is steeped in old Southern tradition, lovely homes, and gracious living. Aristocracy is more important than money, though the latter certainly isn’t shunned. Daddy always said Mama was ‘the belle of Franklin and she never quit ringing’.” In 1947, Sarah married a local Franklin boy, Henry Cannon. Henry came from a prominent Franklin family and spent part of his childhood and young adult life at Wyatt Hall, one of the oldest homes off Franklin Road built around 1805 and across from Harlinsdale Farm. He attended Battle Ground Academy. Henry was the great grandson of John B. McEwen, the Mayor of Franklin during the Civil War. He had a twin sister, Alice, and a younger sister, Jennie. Henry was a pilot in the Pacific Ocean during WWII, and later owned an air charter service. He flew for Eddy Arnold, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, and Elvis Presley, just to name a few. Henry later became Sarah’s manager and her pilot. “They were devoted to each other and had a very unique and powerful love story,” says Nashville attorney Dudley West, nephew of Henry Cannon. Sarah, aka Minnie Pearl, would go on to have a 50-year career as a comedian on the Grand Ole Opry

and spent over 20 years on the television show “Hee Haw.” 1051 W. Main Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as are the homes along West Main Street and Fair Street from 7th to 11th Avenues. This 1873 historic beauty known as “Oaklawn” has 5,937 sq. ft. of living space with four large bedrooms and four and half bathrooms. The exterior of the two-story home has a fabulous turret (tower) and asymmetrical L-shaped front porch which was typical of Queen Anne design. There are six incredible working fireplaces in the home with original mantels including a carved stone mantel in the library. As you enter the foyer, you can see the original brass chandelier that’s almost 150 years old. The walnut staircase has the original newel post. Some of the other beautiful features include a gracious staircase, glass doorknobs, original hardwood floors, doors and windows. At one point, an addition was made to the back of the home to add additional floor space and connect the back staircase inside

the new den area. Part of the hardwood floors were replaced a century ago with wood from a 19th century casket factory in Mississippi. A good portion of the front of the house has the original floors. The Victorian-style curtains are period and the lace drags on the f loor. It was said that back in the day, the more material you used on your curtains, the wealthier you were! Most of the antiques in the home are from the Victorian era. The transom windows above the doors allowed for air f low before air conditioning was invented. A unique feature that was added when the kitchen was remodelled is the brick arched wall over the stove. These were brick pavers from Vanderbilt University, and reused in the home to make the kitchen more rustic and homey. The home sits on a 1.16 acre lot in the heart of historic downtown Franklin. There is even a glass-enclosed Florida room with a patio and fountains in the rear and plenty of room for a pool or tennis court.

BUILDING A STRONG, ETHICAL BUSINESS

LUXURY DESIGNS THAT FIT YOUR LIFESTYLE Sebring Design Build, which started in the Western suburbs of Chicago over 23 years ago, focuses on managing every aspect of home building, remodelling and interior design. In addition to only hiring the most highly talented craftsmen and other tradesmen, Bryan Sebring also believes the people on his team need to have strong ethical values. “The culture in the company is really important,” says Bryan. “I’m building a business here in Tennessee, and I’ve had
about 150 interviews with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers in order to look at their work and make sure the quality is there. That’s important, but it’s also about the relationships I have with them that they’re people I can trust. Character is the number one thing I look for when hiring because I’m sending them out to peoples’ homes.” Bryan also strongly values family, and decided to move with his wife and children to Franklin in 2020 so his

daughter, Brye, could pursue her musical career. “Work-life balance is very important to me,” he says. “I worked very hard in my business and especially early on before I had kids. I have four now and as they grew up, I made it my focus to go to their sporting events and all of their plays. I wasn’t going to miss anything.” Relocating to the area, he says, turned out to be a great move for both his family and his business. “The people are so kind and generous and nice, and that’s what we wanted. We live in Westhaven, and we love our community. People are friendly and it’s just so peaceful.” Shown here is just one example of the amazing work that Sebring Design Build can do. “The homeowners were tired of
their nonfunctional, outdated kitchen,” says Victoria Pelly-Lauer, AKBD, the designer on the project. “The goal was to transform the space into a high-end, accessory-filled space, perfect for having multiple family gatherings.” The quartz countertops, high-end appliances, custom cabinetry, and large island certainly gave them that.” When completed, she says the family gave them a 5-star review. “We listened to their priorities and made sure each was incorporated into the design. They mentioned we were able to finish the project within the time frame they were expecting, as well as provide quick and effective solutions when unexpected issues popped up.” SebringDesignBuild.com CONTINUED >

Andrew Pieri and Tennessee Building Consultants Will Ensure Your Job is Up to Code

Andrew Pieri
Raise your hand if you’ve ever been conned by a contractor. Who hired the guy that showed up late every day for three weeks for a job that should’ve been completed in one? And how many of you have met that charming gent with great references who cashed your down payment and tore up your room before disappearing forever? Well, here’s someone else you should meet. His name is Andrew Pieri of Tennessee Building Consultants (TBC). He doesn’t speak in code; he knows the codes. And as a certified International Code Council inspector, he’s been holding builders and contractors accountable for their work for more than 20 years. “I don’t care if you’re a millionaire or you have no money, sooner or later, everybody has a bad experience with a contractor,” says Pieri. “I have encountered many great, conscientious tradespeople that care about their craft and work to provide an excellent client experience. [But] my guys are busy constantly, going to people’s houses where contractors have taken advantage of them. They haven’t finished the work.” Pieri decided he had to do something about this, so along with his wife Tammy, founded TBC to serve as the homeowner’s advocate. TBC assists homeowners with selecting qualified contractors, securing permits, inspections, quality control and ensuring that contracts are written accurately and jobs are executed according to the contract terms. Pieri says that the volume and scale of construction projects in Middle Tennessee are contributing factors to jobs that go awry. This, along with unrealistic expectations by the homeowner, can lead to hurried inspections, cost overruns and shoddy execution.
“There is so much building going on in Middle Tennessee right now that it’s really hard for your average person to find qualified, licensed and insured contractors to do home improvement projects,” he says. “And even though the city building inspectors come out to do the inspections, the reality is the inspector may have 20-25 inspections a day. So he’s got to get in and out of that house quickly because he doesn’t have time to be more thorough. And you think to yourself, ‘Why didn’t the building inspector catch that?’ It was because they were so busy. They missed it.” With his combination of knowledge, expertise and certification, Pieri and TBC conduct pre-inspections to look for code violations and work through issues with the contractor prior to official inspections. “Many contractors do not keep up with the changes in the building codes,” says Pieri. “And the surest way the homeowner can know is to ask their contractor, ‘can you open a copy of your building code? I’d like to see it.’ And I guarantee you 99 percent of contractors do not have a copy with them. It should be with them on every job.” Contract inspections are just as critical as compliance and physical inspections, especially where timelines and expenses are concerned. And Pieri ensures that those details are covered as well. “I’m here with you [and] we’re going to check your contract,” he says. “We’re going to look at the milestones the guys have and make sure they’re doing everything. We’re going to make sure that if they fail inspection they’re not going to come back to you and say, ‘The building inspector says I have to change all this, so you have to give me more money.’ When in reality, they haven’t done the job.” CONTINUED >

“You don’t know that you need me, but you need me!” Pieri says. “What you’re buying is peace of mind, and can sleep well knowing someone is looking out for you.”
“And a lot of contractors don’t put an ‘escalation cost’ in their contract for material costs. Because of all the tornadoes and the [construction] here, material costs are insane. [Contractors] go back to the owner and the owner says, ‘Wait a second - you said $20,000. I’m not giving you a penny more!’ And they say they can’t finish the job.”

HOLLY AND BRAD LAURITZEN ARE DOING DIY (AND MORE) RIGHT
Our Faux Farmhouse
92
T R E N D SE T T E R | HOM E + DE S I GN
Farmhouse style is an interior design style that prioritizes practicality, simplicity, and rustic charm. Much of the same can be said of the couple, Brad and Holly Lauritzen, behind Our Faux Farmhouse. With a cult-like following of over 1.2 million on Instagram, people have discovered that these two (as well as their projects) are practical and charming all rolled into one couple. It started in 2016 as a place on Instagram where Holly shared Brad’s DIY projects. But she was sharing the photos after the projects were completed. Their Instagram exploded once Holly started sharing their projects in real time instead of looking back. Holly, a former elementary school teacher says, “We weren’t professionals. do it along with us. We are normal homeowners just wanting to make our house look better. One room, one wall at a time.” Brad adds, “I think it was super relatable because every home we got into was a builder spec home. And we were trying to show ways to improve and add character.” The couple has made the journey from Provo, UT to Austin, TX and have now settled in the Franklin area, also bringing their Urban Sips, a soft drink shop, concept with them. “We started Urban Sips & Sweets and Our Faux Farmhouse within months of each other. Once we decided to move here - we fell in love on a whirlwind weekend trip - and in three days, we bought a house and leased a spot in The Factory for Urban Sips. Once we decided, it all fell in to place seamlessly,” says Holly. Brad adds, “For us, family is first. If it’s not a good fit for our family and it isn’t going to make us thrive, we aren’t going to do it.” That family-first attitude has definitely contributed to how their Instagram has evolved into more lifestyle content. People want to know about their family, and things like healthy products for the family and certainly, how they manage five kids

(ages 15, 13, 11, 8 and 6). Holly says, “We’ve shared our struggles and realistic things about our marriage.” The entrepreneurial couple has recently bought into Flutterhabit, an eyelash company. “We always promote doing things ourselves. We’re big on self-reliance and learning to do things for yourself. I love the product so much so I felt comfortable putting our name on it,” says Holly. But don’t fret. Holly and Brad are moving into a new home in our area that they say will need lots of character. What’s next for the Lauritzens? “We would love to expand Urban Sips. Soda is something we are passionate about. We have no idea where Our Faux Farmhouse will take us,” says Holly. “We never really had a plan for it,” added Brad. Holly continues, “The whole goal of this is teaching people and empowering them to know they can do the same things that Brad is doing. He’s not trained - he’s just taught himself. And the difference between him doing it and them doing it? He’s just trying. He’s picking up the tool and trying. That’s it. We want to give people the confidence to get started on making their own home exactly how they want it.” OurFauxFarmhouse.com

GOLF LIKE THE PROS ARTICLE BY BRIANNA MELANSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES WILLIAMS
Ricky Sessum grew up in Augusta, Georgia, home of the Master’s Tournament. At age six, he witnessed Tiger Woods’ debut on the Augusta National Golf Course and years later watched Arnold Palmer walk to the tee box on this same course with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player for the last time as an honorary starter for the tournament. Naturally, this influenced his love for the game and beautiful golf courses. So, after 15 years in the landscaping business, he and his business partner decided to launch Music City Turf which has the goal of creating some of the most extraordinary private synthetic golf greens across the state of Tennessee. Music City Turf is middle and east Tennessee’s authorized dealer, designer, and installer for Celebrity Greens. Their first assignment with CG took place in Indiana and ended up being the largest privately owned artificial golf complex in North America. Ricky boasts, “It’s over 50,000 square feet and has 3 PGA-Caliber size golf greens with lighting and stacked-sod bunkers like you see in Scotland.” CG’s signature sand filled greens can hold shots from over 300 yards out. The quality of Celebrity Greens is nearly identical to the most famous golf courses and many pros decide to replicate certain holes in their own yard to practice on. The Founders of Celebrity Greens have over 24 years of industry experience and have built greens for over 70 PGA Professionals. Last year, Ricky’s team joined the CG professionals in Kansas to create a 13,000 square foot golf complex with 3 target greens for PGA Champion Gary Woodland. The professional golfers are understandably extremely specific. Ricky says, “They’re concerned with having 4 to 8 foot putts that roll very true because these are ones that they may have missed and essentially lost them tournaments. They worry about speed. They want it to measure on the stimpmeter like the courses they play on tour.” CEO and Founder of Celebrity Greens, Weston Weber, says, “The attention to detail is critical. A lot of customers think we’re selling putt-putt golf instead of the sophisticated blend of technology and construction we put into our projects.” The Nashville team consists of 5 installers. Ricky says, “These guys are out playing golf on their days off, so they know how real golf courses act. It’s a huge plus when you’re trying to build the most realistic, authentic product.” Out of all the incredible projects they’ve worked on, the one in Leiper’s Fork last July is his favorite. Ricky wondered

why his client wanted 2 regulation size Par 3 golf greens on his property when he didn’t play golf. It turned out that the client’s 22 year old daughter with down syndrome took up the sport a year ago and was taking lessons. The golf complex was so that she could practice in the peace and comfort of her own home without feeling like strangers were watching or judging her. With her own golf greens, she has the opportunity to enhance her game and gain her confidence. Ricky says, “To see her face when she opened the car door to see the course made it all worth it. She was grinning ear to ear and thought it was the coolest thing she’d ever seen in her life.” That 16,000 square foot project, which required 1,600,000 pounds of base material that had to be moved almost a mile off of any main road with very limited access to dump trucks and semi trucks, only took them 11 days when it could have taken up to 3 months because of the access to Celebrity Green’s national installers. Ricky brought in crews from Florida, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and Arkansas. CONTINUED >

They worked 14 hour days in the summer heat, determined to get the project done for the family to enjoy. Ricky says, “These guys are literally the most experienced installers in North America because all they’ve ever done is artificial turf. These are the original pioneers of the industry. We all have the same goal of creating the best golf greens.” They treat each golf green like they’re making it for a pro. Music City Turf isn’t limited to golf greens. If you want to transform your concrete apartment balcony or have a backyard that doesn’t get enough sunlight to grow grass, turf is an excellent low-maintenance alternative. If your dog gets it dirty, all you have to do is hose it down. A daycare in Dickson is getting a new turf playground from Music City Turf. Ricky says, “We make sure the safety of the kids is not overlooked, so if they fall, they have the best padding underneath them.” Whatever the situation, they’re able to build it and make your space aesthetically beautiful.

Find the Perfect Home in An Exceptional Community
Before becoming a Realtor®, Kristina Powers was a stayat-home mom for 10 years. “I always wanted to get into real estate, so I went ahead and did it three years ago,” she says. “Our family has relocated across the country several times, so I know the pain and I know the stress. I feel like I can walk with someone through that transition and help them.” She also thoroughly enjoys the relationship aspect of the industry. “I really love working with people, so I felt like this was my calling.” In order to broaden her client base from a national market to an international one, she has joined Luxury Homes International in Franklin. Previously with Luxury Homes Tennessee for a number of years, in January she followed one of the owners from that agency into this new and exciting venture. “We have partnered with Keller Williams International, the number one real estate firm in the world,” she says. Since COVID came on the scene, Kristina says the market has been more competitive than ever. “Last month, there were 60 homes on the market for an average of 13 days. There’s been some frustration for home buyers, but I love to assist them by being creative and doing whatever I can to help them win the deal. I've had to do that several times this past year.”

Surprisingly, it’s not always about the highest dollar amount, she explains, but more about what the seller wants. Sometimes they need extra time in their house, or want a buyer who is willing to pass on a home inspection, or one who can pay cash. “It really just depends on the sellers and so I try to find out what's most important to them,” says Kristina. She especially loves working with families that are relocating to the area. “It's such a big life transition for them and they want to make sure they're making the right decision,” she says. “People are moving to Franklin from all over the world, and everybody I’ve worked with who has moved here just absolutely loves it - there are no regrets.” She adds, “A lot of people are moving here from other areas because they want to be in a community that they can get involved in and Franklin has wonderful neighborhoods and an amazing downtown.” This is why it’s so important to have a realtor who knows the area well, especially when buyers are coming from out of state. “You're the one who's going to guide them to exactly what they're looking for, such as where their kids are going to go to school and where the nearest grocery store is, or if their child is into gymnastics, where the closest gymnastics center is located.”

HGTV'S 'HOUSE HUNTERS' HELPS A LOCAL FAMILY FIND THEIR FOREVER HOME 110
O UR TOWN | HOM E + D ESI GN
WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE OF PICKING A HOUSE ON TV LIKE? It was so much fun! Jarod and I were just saying we wish we could do it all over again! It was such a great time. We thought we’d be nervous with three cameras following us around house to house, but the producer and crew were so fun and made us feel so comfortable. In regards to being filmed walking through and commenting on each house, I remember thinking ‘Don’t say all the cliche things everyone says on House Hunters!’ Though I’m sure we did. K ATHY - WHAT WAS IT LIKE FOR YOU AS THEIR REALTOR? Whether it’s on TV or not, it’s always a challenge to find the right house for all members of a family. Working on TV took some getting used to. I must have looked directly into the camera 20 times, which everyone knows is a Hollywood “no, no!” The Goenners were a dream to work with and I’m so happy we found the perfect house.
WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE ON HH? We were in the final stages of paying off all our debt, and what better way to celebrate buying our forever home than being on House Hunters, right? In all honesty though, we were so ready and excited to finally find the house of our dreams, I just decided on a whim to apply. It’s an amazing memory we’ll always have as a family to look back on - even if a bit cringy - to remember how much fun we had. HOW DID YOU FINALLY AGREE BETWEEN A HISTORIC HOME AND TURNKEY? Jarod knew I was never going to go for a historic home after our experience with our 1930’s house in Virginia, but I was willing to compromise on something from the 1980’s if it was in a neighborhood we liked, had a nice backyard, and wouldn’t require serious fixes. The home we chose in Sturbridge fit all of that criteria and more. The previous owners (who actually built the home!) kept it in immaculate condition, the backyard backs up to hundreds of acres on non-buildable land on the Harpeth, and the neighborhood is gorgeous. While we both loved the beautiful finishes inside the turnkey home, being a big outdoor nature family, we knew the teeny backyard was not going to work. KATHY - HOW DO YOU GET COUPLES TO COMPROMISE? Well, the key was listening to why they wanted the features that they wanted. While Katie wanted new construction, she really wanted “trouble free.” She also wanted a house with a grand feel. The house that they decided on was extremely well-maintained so the fear of it being a money pit was eliminated and the circle drive and columns of the house they picked were classic and definitely had that grand feel. Jarod wanted historic, but that is because he wanted a house with character. The house they picked had a historic paint color on the front door, Bellmeade Green and there were pocket doors and some cool large print wallpaper that really helped give the house some character. HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING YOUR NEW HOME? ARE YOU LOVING BEING IN FRANKLIN? We love it so much! I think we say to each other on a weekly basis that we cannot believe this is our home. I personally love our living room with the wall of windows bringing in all the light each morning. Jarod loves being able to watch all the deer and wildlife roam in our backyard and the ability to walk to the Harpeth River. Together we love taking walks to Pinkerton Park and downtown Franklin and the boys are especially enjoying rounds of flashlight tag in the field. We also hit the jackpot with neighbors -everyone has been so friendly and welcoming. When we moved to Franklin six years ago, we knew instantly it would become the place we’d raise our family and grow old together. MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / F R A N KL I N

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now
my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.
Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.

EVE N TS
FACES OF FRANKLIN ARTICLE BY KAREN CREASON
MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: WOODWORKER EXTRAORDINAIRE, PAUL LITCHY
Raised in Milwaukee, Paul Litchy has been interested in woodworking since he was a young boy. Paul’s career as a structural engineer provided him opportunities to work on projects in China, Sri Lanka, as well as in Nashville including the Nashville Airport and The East Bank Stadium (now Nissan Stadium). He taught at Nashville Tech as well as MTSU before retiring. In addition to building his Franklin home, Paul built most of the interior furniture including the bedroom set, multiple tables and end tables, and even a custom kitchen table/ island with built-in drawers. Twice published in Fine Woodworking, widely considered the finest woodworking magazine in print, Paul’s attention to detail and the quality of his craftsmanship are outstanding. One of his greatest woodworking accomplishments is a recreation of the block front knee-hole desk. The original is on display in The New York Metropolitan Museum. Using plans he found in Construction of American Furniture Treasures, Paul’s re-creation is built from Honduras mahogany with every surface of the desk finished including the shallow secret drawer visible from the front. The hardware is reproduction solid brass and was made using the exact hardware templates used on the original desk dating back to 1750-90. While many details were challenging, the construction of the block front drawers from a single piece of mahogany proved most difficult. Dogged determination, patience, perseverance, and 350 - 400 labor hours later, Paul has created what Morrison Heckscher, Metropolitan Museum of Art curator emeritus and specialist on colonial furniture, called “very nice work indeed.” States Paul, “I’ve got a list of stuff I want to do,” and with his attention to detail and master-level woodworking skills, it is just a matter of time before Paul is featured once again in Fine Woodworking.
