A new season signifies a clean slate. A chance to be better.
Can you believe it? Spring has arrived! And with it comes renewal, fresh perspective, and of course, that subtle rhythm of rainy days. But while rain can sometimes feel like an inconvenience as you run from door to door, it is, in truth, a downpour of nourishment and new life, reminding us that growth requires patience, resilience and the willing ness to embrace the new and sometimes, the unknown.
This month, we explore the theme of investment in all its forms—the ways we invest in our well-being, our relationships, our homes and our futures. Whether through personal growth, financial planning or simply appreciating the moments of joy we sometimes overlook, every choice we make shapes the life we build.
In this issue, we were inspired by those making meaningful investments, not only in themselves but in Frederick and beyond. From innovation and art, to finance, law and education, we celebrate the people and ideas driving our community forward.
As the saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Just as the Earth knows when to emerge from its winter sleep, now is the time to pour into the things that will bring us joy and make our lives more vibrant. Like the colors that emerge with the season, the investments we make that allow us to blossom in new ways.
Life is abundant—pour into what brings you joy! … And a little dance in the rain never hurt anybody.

Capital River Wealth Management Offers Financial Planning with Purpose
Financial planning, for Capital River Wealth Management (CRWM) founder Daniel Schiffman, has always been a discipline that hits close to home. He experienced a significant loss early on in life when his father passed away on Thanksgiving Eve of his high school senior year. One of the things he remembers most about that time was how his family’s financial reality shifted suddenly, and the challenges his mother faced as she began to sort through their affairs. Dan decided that he wanted to help other families have greater peace of mind. He began as a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual in 1998, and as of 2025, has been with the financial services provider for 27 years.
His early choice to affiliate with Northwestern Mutual – a partnership he has continued after founding CRWM – wasn’t undertaken lightly.
“I did over a year of research before choosing a financial services firm,” he says, “and I met with several. What it came down to was Northwestern Mutual’s values.”
In particular, the principles that stood out to Dan most were Northwestern Mutual’s commitment to taking the long view and doing the right thing on behalf of clients.
“The question Northwestern Mutual is always trying to answer is, ‘What is in our clients’ best interest?’ They always do the right thing, even if it isn’t easier in the short-term.”
Furthermore, Schiffman says, “The firm has a great reputation. This allows us at CRWM to focus on the nuts and bolts of financial planning, investment management and risk planning – what we do best.”
Dan founded CRWM in 2021 to bring more of a personal touch to the financial planning practice. In addition, it was also to create continuity and a lasting firm to serve their clients.
“I wanted to develop an enduring organization where the people who have trusted me over the years can always be taken care of with the same values and standards – even after I move into retirement,” he says. The firm is united around a set of core values –Passion, Purpose and Partnership – and CRWM functions based on Schiffman’s own unique approach.
The first key understanding that Schiffman brings to his work is that “finances themselves are not a goal.” Financial pictures emerge from a combination of decision-making and values, he says, and the priorities – usually linked to families, communities and relationships – of people seeking financial advice. CRWM, as a result, tries to understand what is truly important to clients, and what they want their finances to help secure or build.
CRWM also has the capability and the expertise to manage and consider a comprehensive financial picture for each client. “We engage in both offensive and defensive planning, and we can cover all three bases of financial planning, insurance and investments,” Schiffman says.
Most conversations with clients, says Schiffman, center around things they’re either “excited about, thinking about or concerned about.”
One thing he wants people to know about CRWM is that the firm meets clients wherever they are. Whether they’re just beginning to consider how they’ll fund college for their kids, or whether they’ve been legacy planning for years, CRWM is able to assess the opportunities and risks, and come up with solutions.
“Financial planning is never something to be intimidated by or afraid of. We want to help clients get these measures in place as early as possible so that they can have a sense of clarity and security,” he says.
CRWM serves both individual clients as well as institutions both locally and nationally. The thing that all of the firm’s clients have in common, Schiffman says, is that they’re concerned about impact. “The people we serve are family-oriented and often community oriented. They’re involved in their communities. They’re stewarding their finances for themselves, but also with others in mind. They get excited by the impact they have both at home, financially and often out in their communities.”
• PASSION – We approach our work, our education and our client relationships with bold responsibility
• PURPOSE – We are motivated to help our clients make a meaningful impact on their financial futures and lives
• PARTNERSHIP – We work together with our clients in a trusted relationship that empowers them to achieve their vision
“I wanted to develop an enduring organization where the people who have trusted me over the years can always be taken care of.”
Since this is a value CRWM shares with clients, the firm works hard to co-create a “trusted advisor and client” relationship. Schiffman says: “We’re not a vendor with a customer. We believe clients have the best outcome and experience when building a long - term trusted advisor relationship rather than a transactional one.”
The CRWM team, which also includes partners Annette Tinder and Luke McLaughlin, lives out their values of Passion, Purpose and Partnership by staying engaged in the community. Each of the partners works to make an impact through various community organizations such as Rotary, Heartly House, Habitat for Humanity and Beyond Shelter Frederick.
Still, they agree that their most impactful purpose-driven channel thus far has been the difference they’ve been able to make in clients’ lives. According to Tinder, 19 years of working with Schiffman and the other CRWM team members have allowed her to “[witness] the life-changing impact of thoughtful financial planning.” Growing up, she says, “my parents didn’t have a lot of money, yet I saw them skillfully navigate financial uncertainties thanks to their diligent planning with a trusted advisor.”
McLaughlin echoes that his collaboration with Dan through CRWM has “[transformed] challenges into opportunities, proving that passion, purpose and partnership is the foundation of success in financial planning and in life.” Advising their clients, for CRWM, will always be less about the dollars and cents and more about the people behind them – and how their financial flourishing can positively impact their families and the world.

Art has a way of speaking to us, calling us to slow down, pause and connect with something deeper. Art is more than decoration; it’s a celebration of creativity, individuality and self-expression. Investing in art is not trends or transactions—it’s the personal, cultural and emotional value that art brings into our lives.
For a first-time collector, purchasing art can feel daunting. Where do you begin? How do you choose something meaningful? The beauty of art is that it is subjective—there are no rules. The journey of curating a collection is just as much about discovering who you are as it is about finding the right piece.
CONTINUED >
Many may believe that collecting art is for the wealthy, but it’s incredibly accessible, if you know where to look. Up-and-coming artists, local galleries and even online platforms like Instagram or Etsy are filled with original works and affordable prints. Handmade pieces, or even small sculptures can be a great way to start your collection without breaking the bank. The key is to focus on what resonates with you.
What makes art such a meaningful investment? While a few pieces may increase in monetary value, the greatest returns are not monetary. A painting that brings a space to life, a sculpture that sparks discussion or a photograph that evokes cherished memories—these are the actual dividends of art. It brightens your space, enriches your days and connects you with something timeless and personal.
Growing up, I was surrounded by artistic expression—my grandmother, mother and sister regularly painted, drew and explored their creativity in countless ways. They taught me that art isn’t just something to own or create— it’s a language of its own, bridging the space between words and emotions. It’s a reflection of identity. Watching art come to life before my eyes gave me a profound appreciation for the stories and personalities that can be embedded within each piece.
In a world that often feels rushed and impersonal, art encourages us to slow down, reflect and feel. It adds warmth and personality to our surroundings. Whether you’re a collector or simply picking up your first piece, the value of art lies in the meaning, joy and inspiration it adds to your life. Those are the real returns.

The “six degrees of separation” concept is nowhere more applicable than in Frederick – where almost everyone seems to be separated by degrees of two or three. Still, it was a surprise for attorney Megan McGrew, of the Law Office of Morrison & McGrew, to learn that her dad had been founding partner Scott Alan Morrison’s junior high school shop teacher. “It shows that we’ve been in Frederick a while,” she laughs.
THE LAW OFFICE OF MORRISON & MCGREW CELEBRATES 25
“THE MOST FULFILLING PART OF THE WORK IS HONESTLY BEING
This year, the law firm is celebrating its 25th anniversary, with a full quarter-century serving the community in the practice of estate planning, elder law and probate administration. Morrison founded it as his own practice in April 2000, after spending several years with another local firm, Russell & Hefner. His aim was to be able to shift focus away from trials, criminal law and divorce cases, and build a practice on what he most enjoyed: estate planning. “I can be the absolute best at the discipline I most enjoy if I keep a limited focus on it,” he says. And Morrison & McGrew’s goal is to be a trusted go-to for estate matters, drawing on their years of experience and genuine desire to serve especially seniors in the community and families making key decisions about their lives.
McGrew joined the practice 16 years ago, in 2008. “After law school at the University of Pittsburgh, I moved back to Frederick, but I was originally working at a firm in Gaithersburg,” she says. After meeting Morrison at an elder expo where the two were promoting their firms, they stayed in touch, building a mentorship and Morrison later asked her to join him at the law office. “It was a great opportunity,” McGrew says, “to finally be both living and working in the community I love.”
Over the years, Morrison and McGrew have shaped their approach to serving clients around a few core values: “We try to communicate effectively, offer quality work at a reasonable price, treat people with compassion and maintain a sense of humor through it all,” Morrison says. That last one tends to be important – “We’re often meeting our clients in the midst of difficult situations, even tense moments,” McGrew says. “It helps to be able to share a laugh.”

The Law Office of Morrison & McGrew, P.A., was founded to help people navigate the often tricky process of preserving assets and protecting families through estate law and probate. They provide straightforward advice and skilled legal services in estate law matters at a convenient location in downtown Frederick.
CLIENT SERVICES INCLUDE:
• Estate Planning: Gain peace of mind and protect assets for loved ones through developing a testamentary will, revocable or irrevocable trust, or living will
• Elder Law & Long-Term Care Planning: Ensure medical expenses are accounted for and family members’ needs are met with Medicaid planning, long-term care asset allocation or a special needs trust
• Probate Administration: Advise personal representatives and handle all processes relevant to estate management and distribution (efficiently & cost-effectively)
Morrison & McGrew offers free initial consultations for all prospective clients. To schedule a consult, contact the law office at 301-859-0827 or send a request online at SamLawOffice.com.
Both Morrison and McGrew also value the ability to serve seniors and multiple generations of the same family. “The most fulfilling part of the work,” McGrew says, “is honestly just being able to bring people peace of mind.” Whether it’s a simple draft of a will, planning for long-term care and all its contingencies, or even sorting out a more complicated situation through probate, Morrison and McGrew strive to help bring clients a sense of security without an unnecessarily drawn-out or expensive legal process.
They each are active in the community and have raised families in the Frederick area. Morrison and his wife have a son and daughter–and now a grandson–and he’s involved with the Knights of Columbus, the Special Olympics and the Frederick Fair. “You can also find me at classic car shows,” he says. “I’ve got a ’57 Chevrolet – that only took me about 15 years of slow progress to restore.” The color? Turquoise.
McGrew is the sports coach extraordinaire. She and her husband have two daughters, and she stays busy not only coaching their basketball teams, but also being a team manager for their soccer club. “It doesn’t leave a lot of time for much else!” she says.
A few other key members of their extended “family” are Morrison & McGrew’s exceptionally loyal staff. “I’ve been working with Ruth, our receptionist, for 29 years,” Morrison says, “and our paralegal, Christine, for 30 years – both have been here the entire time Morrison & McGrew has been around.” In addition to being just as dedicated to client service as the firm’s partner attorneys, Ruth and Christine’s longevity with the firm has made for an excellent set of working relationships and a high level of trust between all involved. “It’s something clients can feel,” McGrew says. “We’ve built these long-term relationships and we offer our clients security based on that trust.”
The two remember some of the earlier days of the law firm and reflect on how much it has grown. “We started out doing presentations to all kinds of groups – church groups, luncheons, anything to build up the practice,” Morrison says. “It helps that we’re personable and we’re happy to just go out and talk to people.” Today, most clients come through referrals or word-of-mouth. That’s the power of persistence and a dedication to community service. In the words of a satisfied Morrison & McGrew client: “You sailed through the obstructions and kept on track to the conclusion!” It’s an approach that has brought the partner attorneys through all 25 years.

• ¾ oz. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice
• 2 Dashes Angastura Bitters
• Orange Twist
• Glass Type: Coupe

2. Add everything to your shaker with ice.
4. Pour into your coupe.
5. Twist your orange peel again, like you did last summer.

8. And a good cocktail.
The Income Tax Cocktail likely popped up during the Prohibition party scene of the 1920s. Its exact origin story remains a bit blurry, but it was definitely a hit in speakeasies.
The name? Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Made with gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a dash of bitters, it's like a boozy adventure for your taste buds, with hints of citrus and herbs. Despite its vintage roots, the Income Tax Cocktail still brings the party vibes, transporting you back to the roaring '20s.
