Home, Hearth, Heart

Home And Design

Home is our grounding, our base, our launchpad. It’s where we typically start and end our days. While the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value that 'homes' hold for all of us is undeniable.

Author Wendy Wunder stated: “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” For our readers this month, we wanted to embody what makes that special feeling. That, of course includes the comfort amenities, food, drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly, the unique people.

We feel fortunate as we got to learn more about local businesses and individuals, and hope the small lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together.

As you flip through the pages of this edition, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you.

Every month, readers share that they keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that's valued in our community, and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

Happy March!

In the realm of home improvement, finding a reliable and skilled contractor often can be a daunting task. Founded in 2014 by Sergio Maldonado, SLM General Contractors & Roofing was born out of a desire to revolutionize the industry by providing exceptional training, strong leadership and unparalleled customer service.

"The goal is that every client will get exactly what they envision, and that each client’s needs and wants are considered when executing a project," he says.

SLM General Contractors & Roofing is a full-range roofing and construction company offering residential and commercial services to Frisco, McKinney and surrounding areas. Sergio says he and his team provide services designed to help

clients achieve the space of their dreams. "While general maintenance will help preserve a home or a commercial space, major repairs and remodels will improve appearance, function and value," he reminds.

Recognizing the unique nature of each client, home and project, Sergio says he is committed to delivering tailored residential general contracting solutions. This commitment translates into unparalleled coverage for customers, encompassing various aspects such as designing home additions, room conversions, remodeling and renovating specific elements within homes, such as kitchen and bathroom renovations, as well as expertise in

"REPAIRS

AND REMODELS IMPROVE APPEARANCE, FUNCTION AND VALUE."

carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC services.

SLM General Contractors & Roofing is known for being committed to excellence.

“The roofing and remodeling field is fiercely competitive, which is why we are committed to offering unparalleled quality of service and service of the highest caliber on any assignment,” says Sergio. “Our team goes above and beyond what is expected to provide a great customer experience every time.”

Sergio states that SLM General Contractors & Roofing's dedication ensures the highest quality work and service possible. It includes using pristine

designs, top-of-the-line materials and providing superior customer service. This helps give clients confidence their project will be completed to their satisfaction.

An initial phone-based consultation gathers information on the scope of the project, Sergio outlines. Next, a site visit will help gather additional information, including the client’s budget, to determine the project’s feasibility and next steps. After the site visit, a timeline will be established, and a preconstruction service agreement will be put in place that will contain project details. All clients that enter into a preconstruction services agreement will receive a personalized

project cost before committing to any actual construction services. For projects that aren't as complex and don't require custom selections, clients don't need to enter into a preconstruction services agreement, Sergio adds.

SLM General Contractors & Roofing team members also have extensive experience in property repairs and rebuilding where a property insurance claim is in place. Sergio says he and his team know how to navigate insurance and mortgage companies’ documentation and communication processes, working hard to help local property owners after a disaster.

Sergio believes unmatched dedication to quality, communication and customer service is what sets SLM General Contractors & Roofing apart from the company's competitors. Sergio says they take time to listen to clients' requests and concerns to make sure they are happy and satisfied with the results, working to build long-term relationships with every client.

“We take pride in our work. I live in McKinney and want to be known as one of the good contractors in town,” confirms Sergio. “I want to be that person that clients want to say hi to at the grocery store.”

Integrity Air Duct Cleaning Specialists Flush Out Pollutants, Allergens In Ventilation Systems

Breathe Easy

At Home

Integrity is more than a name for Integrity Air Duct Cleaning; it’s a promise, asserts the company’s President Mark Baker. “We promise to stay true to our roots with honest, prompt and expert HVAC services from our skilled technicians. Our work is guaranteed 100% of the time,” he adds.

Air duct cleaning is a critical aspect of maintaining a healthy home environment. Using state-of-the-art technology, Air Duct Cleaning services cover three beneficial areas: air duct cleaning, air duct sanitizing and dryer vent cleaning.

Mark says cleanings remove dust, construction debris, pet dander and contamination from flexible or metal duct work. “If mold, bacteria or other contaminants have settled in someone’s ductwork, we offer a safe, sanitizing solution made from the herb thyme, which is 99.99% effective in eliminating harmful germs and pollutants.”

In fact, Integrity Air Duct specialists use the certified product Botanical Disinfection from the Ontario-headquartered company called Benefect, which contains thyme oil as the active ingredient. Mark says that company is the largest purchaser of thyme oil in the world and their products are patented worldwide. “Thyme oil is an effective germ-killing ingredient that’s less toxic than vinegar,” he states.

By offering a deeper cleaning, Mark says Air Duct Cleaning teams target grilles, diffusers, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans (drip pans), fan motor/housing, plus the air-handling unit housing.

“Ducts are the lungs of your home, and they carry air into your family’s lungs. A typical home creates up to 40 annual pounds of dust,” Mark shares. “Dirt, pollen, mold spores, animal dander, and chemicals linger

in air ducts, and can significantly affect kids and adults with allergies, asthma and sensitive immune systems.”

Due to build-up debris in dryer vents being one of the top causes of house fires, Mark says they also help clients protect their loved ones and property from that potential danger.

Additionally, according to U.S. Department of Energy data, 25-40% of energy used for heating or cooling a home tends to be wasted. Mark states that clean air ducts improve the efficiency of heating systems, reducing costs and the risk of a carbon monoxide leak or sudden failure.

MCM Outdoor Living Blends Custom Design, Expert Craftsmanship, Family-Focused Transformations

Founded in 2015 by Cody McKinley, McKinley Construction Management (MCM) is known as a trusted name in transforming outdoor spaces across North Texas. With a focus on creating luxurious yet functional retreats, MCM prides itself on bringing families together in beautiful outdoor environments that foster lasting memories.

Cody, inspired by his father’s work as a contractor, developed a passion for hand-built creations early in life. Partnering with his brother-in-law, Chris Weaks, MCM operates as a family business with a shared commitment to excellence. Cody oversees marketing, sales and subcontracting, while Chris manages accounting and logistics. Together, they’ve built a team of licensed, trained and certified professionals dedicated to quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.

“Our goal is to create spaces that reconnect families and provide a place for meaningful moments,” says Cody. “It’s not just about construction; it’s about changing lives by transforming backyards into cherished spaces.”

The MCM crew specializes in custom outdoor living spaces, pool design and construction, and comprehensive home improvement projects. Whether a client desires a cozy pergola, a deck for entertaining, or a complete backyard overhaul with landscaping, MCM professionals ensure each project is tailored to homeowners’ visions.

“Our focus is on bringing people together at home by crafting unique outdoor spaces for families to cherish,” Cody explains.

MCM crews set themselves apart with top-tier materials, craftsmanship and customer service. Their Texas-Sized Warranty offers peace of mind, including a 10-year structural warranty, a 3-year electrical warranty, and a 1-year cosmetic warranty. MCM’s customizable packages also ensure every project meets individual needs and budgets.

MCM team members indicate they believe nature is the perfect backdrop for creating cherished family moments.

“We like to push boundaries and make cool stuff,” says Cody. “Our job is to let customers have a great experience while creating spaces they’ll love for years to come.”

At its core, MCM is a family-oriented business. Cody’s dedication to his family inspires his work, and his goal is to build a legacy that blends personal and professional success.

“I’m doing this for my family and to build a legacy, but also for the customers,” Cody shares. “We want to provide experiences that exceed expectations, turning dreams into realities.”

MCM’s team shares the same hardworking mindset, focusing on open communication, attention to detail and customer satisfaction. Cody says their approach ensures clients feel comfortable and confident throughout the process.

“WE BELIEVE THE BEST WAY TO RECONNECT WITH YOUR LOVED ONES IS BY SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE,” SAYS CODY MCKINLEY.

For homeowners considering an outdoor renovation, Cody offers two key pieces of advice. First, plan ahead. Outline goals, budget and timeline before starting a project. A clear plan helps avoid unexpected costs and delays. Second, set a realistic budget. Factor in materials, labor, permits and a contingency fund for unexpected expenses. By planning effectively, clients can create spaces that meet their needs while staying within their budget.

The MCM staff also offers several financing options and payment arrangements, making it easier for homeowners to achieve their dream outdoor spaces.

From luxurious outdoor kitchens to stunning landscapes, MCM brings each project to life with a hands-on approach. Their team serves as the client’s point of contact throughout the process, ensuring seamless communication and exceptional results.

Cody says MCM’s commitment to excellence doesn’t end with construction: MCM also offers valuable guidance to help clients fully enjoy their new outdoor spaces. By focusing on thoughtful planning and creative design, they ensure every backyard becomes a hub for relaxation, entertainment and cherished memories.

CODY RECOMMENDS FOUR STEPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF BACKYARDS:

1. Set Goals: Decide what is wanted from a backyard. Is it entertaining, gardening, relaxation or a mix? Knowing goals helps in planning effectively.

2. Add Entertainment: Boost backyards with fun features, such as a grill, firepit, outdoor kitchen, or even a hot tub or pool, if space and budget allow. These additions make backyards a hub for enjoyment.

3. Regular Maintenance: Keep backyards in top shape by staying on top of tasks such as lawn care, plant trimming, furniture cleaning and prompt repairs.

4. Create Zones: Divide backyards into different areas, such as dining, lounging, garden and play spaces for kids, if needed. This organization enhances usability and creates a sense of order.

With their expertise, craftsmanship and customer-focused approach, MCM crews transform unused spaces into meaningful retreats. Whether it’s hosting family gatherings, watching sunsets, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Cody says MCM ensures every client loves where they spend their time.

MAKE A GRAND ENTRANCE TO HOME

Mon te Cristo Ironworks Of North Texas: The Art Of Custom Iron Doors

ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MONTE CRISTO IRONWORKS

One of the first features that captivates attention when approaching a house is its entryway, particularly the front door. However, in the realm of luxury homes, even those adorned with extravagant details, finding a door that truly makes a grand statement can be a challenge. This is where the Monte Cristo Ironworks team steps in.

Since 2006, Monte Cristo Ironworks has become a beacon of craftsmanship and design excellence. Its roots can be traced to a family-owned ironworks factory established in 1993. In January 2023, the company expanded its presence to McKinney.

“Monte Cristo Ironworks of North Texas is strategically located in McKinney due to strong personal connections and the burgeoning opportunities in the North Dallas, Collin County and North Texas regions,” says Dillon Chilcoat, business manager of Monte Cristo Ironworks of North Texas.

Monte Cristo Ironworks specializes in designing, manufacturing, installing and servicing custom steel and glass doors. Offering a diverse range of styles—from traditional hand-forged old-world scrollwork to modern, contemporary, transitional and minimalist designs—the company caters to a variety of tastes and preferences.

Distinguishing between classic and custom doors, Dillon emphasizes that every door can be considered custom. While classic doors streamline the process for new construction projects, the true essence lies in the custom doors tailored for existing homes. These doors are meticulously designed, allowing clients to choose any size, shape or style, reflecting the unique character of their homes.

Dillon says the journey with Monte Cristo Ironworks begins when a customer reaches out, seeking to transform their entryway. The experienced design team collaborates with clients, considering architectural styles, landscaping, budget constraints and more details. Encouraging visits to the showroom for an immersive experience, he says the team also provides rough estimates based on initial details, ensuring a seamless design process.

Customers are invited to explore past designs on the website and social media pages for inspiration, or they can bring their own ideas to the table. The showroom becomes a crucial space for visualizing different materials and details, facilitating the design process.

“We go the extra mile by presenting design options edited into pictures of the customer's entryway, allowing them to make informed decisions,” explains Dillon.

Once a design is chosen, a custom production CAD with all order details is created. The customer receives the CAD and an updated invoice, confirming their order with a deposit. With a commitment to delivering quality in approximately 12 weeks for custom doors and even quicker for classic doors, Dillon says Monte Cristo Ironworks ensures a seamless transition from concept to reality.

This family-owned enterprise prides itself on a passion for design, commitment to quality, and a unique approach to crafting steel and glass doors. “What sets Monte Cristo Ironworks apart is not only our product but also our commitment to service, knowledge and experience,” states Dillon.

Standing behind their products for the entirety of their lifespan, Dillon says the company's unique design process allows customers to make choices that resonate with their preferences. The implementation of a modular system in classic doors adds an extra layer of strength to their offerings. With nearly two decades of experience in designing, installing and servicing steel doors, coupled with more than 30 years of manufacturing expertise from their partners, the Monte Cristo Ironworks team members have honed their craft to perfection.

In a world where first impressions matter, Dillon says Monte Cristo Ironworks ensures that the front door isn't just an entrance, it's a statement. "As we continue to forge the future of custom iron doors, each creation reflects the intersection of craftsmanship, design and the unique vision of their clients."

The Monte Cristo Ironworks of North Texas showroom is located at 7502 Eldorado Parkway, Ste. 200, in McKinney.

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE

INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!

invest inyour living space

There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.

GOOD LIGHTING

It’s imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. Rooms need a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light.  Candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.

GREAT TEXTURES

Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.

DECLUTTERING

So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages.  You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.
