LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development.

The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning.

Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year.

We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program.

We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.

Loving All Things Local!

February here in North Central Florida is a beautiful month of love, and falls right in between the chill of our “Winter” and the excitement of Spring.  And since February is known as the month of love, here we are celebrating and loving all things local!

Our annual “Love local” issue is all about supporting your local businesses and showcasing those in our community who do so much.  We believe what we do when we can come together and do as a community is so much more meaningful than what we do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages, month after month. In this issue we’re featuring some exciting members of our community including a celebrity visit from Guy Fieri who was with our own Jigz Patel, co-owner of The Good Pour, which donates to more than 125 charities, including the Guy Fieri Foundation.    This month we also share with you the meaning behind the beautiful “Lyrics for Life” event and we introduce you to the owners of Wood You Furniture – celebrating 40 years in business!

And as always, our Shop/Love Local pages and our Business Monthly announcements salute many of our favorite local companies of all different kinds.

Happy February!  Remember to keep love and joy in your heart, and see you around town!

LYRICS FORLIFE

ARTICLE BY TIM BOGLE & LEZA MUELLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS WATKINS
FIGHTING CANCER WITH MUSIC
“Cancer has touched so many lives—whether through a loved one, friend, or colleague—and Lyrics for Life is fighting back. It’s a deeply personal mission for the team, whose passion drives them to explore innovative ways to engage communities and make a lasting impact.”

Lyrics for Life is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer. Founded by Sister Hazel’s frontman Ken Block and his bandmates, the charity honors the memory of Ken’s younger brother Jeffrey, who bravely battled cancer from age 14 until his passing at age 18.

The organization brings together physicians, celebrities, and musicians to host concerts, auctions, and other fundraising events. The funds raised are donated to groups working to cure cancer and those enhancing the lives of patients and their families. By supporting summer camps, family programs, and other patient-focused initiatives, Lyrics for Life tackles this disease from every angle, aiming to make each day brighter for those affected.

Artists contribute in unique ways, often by donating handwritten lyrics to one of their songs on unusual items such

as surfboards, journals, or posters. These one-of-a-kind creations are auctioned at Lyrics for Life events, generating critical funds while celebrating creativity.

Fueled by personal experiences of loss, the organization’s volunteers, sponsors, and musicians are committed to raising awareness and funds for this vital cause. Their mission is not only to support research but also to create events that are fun, meaningful, and inspiring.

Sister Hazel’s Lyrics for Life event is coming up on Saturday, March 8th, 2025, at the Curtis M. Phillips Center on the University of Florida campus. Doors open at 7 PM, and the show starts at 8 PM.

There’s still time to get involved! Become an event sponsor, a patron sponsor, or purchase concert tickets.

Visit lyricsforlife.org to learn more or make a donation today. Don’t miss this incredible event and the chance to make a meaningful difference!

“Together, through music, creativity, and shared hope, we can make a real difference in the fight against cancer.”

Want

TEACHING AND Demonstrating Love to Children

Children learn about love through their experiences with family and friends. They exist largely on the receiving end and the concept of giving and receiving love can be very abstract.

Parents need to model kindness, caring and patience for their children to understand the qualities of love. Patience does not come naturally to children and parents can help by encouraging this by example and talk about not trying to seek instant self-gratification by modeling with their own actions when opportune situations, such as waiting in line or in traffic arise. Patience leads to self-control and better decision making.

One of the ways to teach kindness is to ask your child to be a noticer for the day. This will entail noticing if someone looks sad and approaching them and asking if they need help or noticing if someone is sitting by

themselves and go sit with them. Noticing others helps children not be as self-absorbed. Being self-absorbed can lead to depression and anxiety.

There are many activities and ideas to help parents teach their children about the meaning of love. One site I recommend is www.momentsaday.com/ activities-to-teach-children-about-love/ The ideas and activities are hands-on and are suitable for the whole family.

There are many books such as, The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein, that can teach through the magic of storytelling the idea of selflessness. The aforementioned link has a list of books for children that cover these concepts beautifully.

And for Valentine’s Day, The Day It Rained Hearts, by, Felicia Bond, is a personal favorite.

Christina Miller, Owner/Head of School Millhopper Montessori School. Located at 8505 NW 39th Ave, Gainesville, Florida. (352) 375-6773.
