January is our Health & Wellness issue and this year, more than any other I think, the significance of being healthy has more resonance. After all, it was about a year ago that we started hearing about a strange new virus across the globe, coronavirus. That illness defined so much of 2020 and as the old year closed out and we got word of successful vaccines that were in the works we all breathed a sigh of relief. We are all eagerly anticipating that 2021 will mark our emergence out of the pandemic and into a healthy, happy year! Toward that end we’ve compiled several stories that focus on how we can all improve our wellness this year. We spoke with Dr. George Mantikas, DMD, who lives here in Glastonbury and has a practice in East Hampton. Dr. Mantikas is infectiously passionate about dental health and he has some great advice for us. The health of your mouth can tell you a lot about your overall health and your semi-annual dental exam can help identify and prevent diseases elsewhere in the body. The folks at Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness also stand ready to help you meet your

“It’s a very thorough orientation to see what their starting point is.” Jennifer Freeman, Healthtrax’s fitness director, said that during the Covid-19 crisis Healthtrax has sought to reach out to members who haven’t been able to get to the gym by developing virtual programs, classes and personal training. “We’re trying to step up our game so we can reach everyone.” During quarantine many people have cooked and eaten more than normal and have probably also been more sedentary than in the past. “We want to get them back up and active again,” she said. Besides its large, central workout room with dozens of specialized exercise machines, Healthtrax also offers one-on-one training, small group and virtual training, and a variety of in-club and virtual motivating group fitness classes including yoga, strength training, cycling, Zumba, SilverSneakers classes and more. There are also aquatics programs held in the center’s large, indoor lap pool and more recently Healthtrax has begun offering its own on-site physical therapy clinics and therapy pool to treat a wide-range of post-operative issues and sports-related injuries. “Having our own physical therapy clinic makes sense with our fitness programs,” Steve said. “It’s a good service for our clients and it’s an integrative opportunity that allows us to diversify our programs and offerings.”

Orthopedic Associates Q & A THE ORTHOPEDIC GROUP OPERATES OFFICES AND AN ORTHOPEDIC URGENT CARE CENTER IN GLASTONBURY

FOUNDED IN 1970 ORTHOPEDIC ASSOCIATES OF HARTFORD, PC (OAH) IS ONE OF CONNECTICUT’S LARGEST AND MOST RESPECTED ORTHOPEDIC SPECIALTY GROUPS. As a total orthopedic care center, OAH has 31 physicians specializing in orthopedic surgery and dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and ligaments. Along with its 21 advanced practitioners and nearly 30 physical therapists, OAH takes a full-service approach to serve the orthopedic needs of patients at nine locations, four state-of-the-art surgery centers, onsite physical and occupational therapy, an MRI center and walk-in urgent care available daily, nights and weekends. OAH’s Glastonbury urgent care at 345 Western Blvd., opened in the fall of 2014 and its Farmington urgent care center opened in the spring of 2015. We asked two of OAH’s doctors about some of the basics of what they and the urgent care centers offer. DR. STEPHEN L. DAVIS Q. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF ORTHOPEDICFOCUSED URGENT CARE? A. Orthopedic injuries and complaints include some of the most common reasons for doctor visits nationwide. Providing access to specialty specific care in orthopedics improves treatment for patients, reduces the number of unnecessary doctor visits, and increases patient satisfaction.

Dr. Michael Miranda

DR. MICHAEL MIRANDA Q. WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN ORTHOPEDIC-SPECIFIC URGENT CARE FACILITY? A. The advantage to the patient is that our urgent care physicians have much more experience with musculoskeletal injuries than what you would encounter in a regular ER setting. OAH’s urgent care facilities also provide patients with more improved access to health care and faster diagnoses and definitive treatment. Q. ARE YOU SEEING MORE PATIENTS DURING COVID? ARE PEOPLE GETTING INJURED MORE SINCE THEY ARE SPENDING MORE TIME IN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES? A. Yes, we're seeing a higher level of severity with regard to injuries and we feel that many of the smaller hospitals are referring patients on to the larger hospitals and the larger groups of surgeons as a result we are taking care of more patients with worse injuries than for example a year ago Q. AS A FELLOWSHIP TRAINED ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA SURGEON, WHAT ARE THE UNIQUE SKILLS THAT YOU PROVIDE PATIENTS? A. A fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeon brings more experience, higher skill level and more familiarity with the different ways to treat fractures. They typically treat more complex problems and as a result fairly straightforward injuries for an orthopedic traumatologist may be a challenge to a non-fellowship trained fracture surgeon . Q. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT SOMEONE

BETWEEN DENTAL HEALTH AND OVERALL PERSONAL WELLNESS DR. GEORGE MANTIKAS DOESN’T HESITATE WITH HIS ANSWER. “It’s critical,” he says. Dr. Mantikas points to a case of a patient who came in for a routine visit. The state-of-the-art panoramic X-rays taken revealed something to the Doctor not seen on a previous year’s image.

and extensive training to identify issues in the mouth that can signify disease elsewhere in the body. For instance, certain bacteria in the mouth, which may be diagnosed using a simple saliva DNA test, can be an indicator of several different medical conditions, including arthritis, heart disease, including stroke, certain cancers, and even low birth weight in the babies of pregnant patients. When there is bleeding and inflammation in the mouth, more than likely, it is elsewhere in the body. Additional, progressive technology that Dr. Mantikas uses in his practice includes 3D Cone Beam Imaging, the most advanced diagnostic imaging available. “It provides us with more clarity, which enables our team to provide a more accurate diagnosis.” His practice also employs a chairside CAD/ CAM system “which allows us to produce sameday crowns, veneers, onlays, inlays and more.” Further dental technology implemented in the practice includes the Waterlase MD laser, which
