The Happiest of Holidays to You!

Greetings, Greeley!

It is hard to believe that the holidays have arrived! As the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror what we experienced as children — the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all.

The magic of Santa Claus was a profound part of my childhood. I learned the value of kindness, the joy of giving and the beauty of belief. I worked hard to pass those lessons and values to my children when they were small, and now that they are becoming adults and live in cities across the U.S., I hope and pray that they will remember those lessons and share them with their communities.

My favorite article this month is a spotlight on some of Greeley's community leaders. They share with us their Santa memories, holiday traditions and how they give back to our community during the holidays.

In this issue, we also highlight the magic of the season and all that our city offers to help spread holiday cheer. We’ve featured some great gifts that will make your holiday shopping easier and support Greeley’s local businesses. We also share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment, and we hope that you enjoy all that Greeley has put together — especially the festive events downtown.

I am so very grateful for you, my readers, this holiday season! My hope for you is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy and love to one another this season.

Sincerely,

December 2024

SANTA CLAUS ISN’T JUST A JOLLY GUY IN A RED SUIT — HE’S A SYMBOL OF THE SPIRIT OF GIVING DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

As the holiday season rolls in, it’s hard not to think of Santa Claus and our cozy memories of childhood. Santa is the ultimate symbol of giving, reminding us all how magical it feels to share with others.

This time of year is all about spreading good cheer, whether through thoughtful gifts, charitable acts or just a simple smile. Each act of kindness lights up the season, creating ripple effects of happiness. Greeley is so lucky to have its very own Santa Claus to brighten the season and share that vibrant spirit of giving!

I always loved Christmas morning and couldn’t wait to wake up to see the gifts from Santa. My most favorite gift was a Cricket talking doll. I remember that moment like it was yesterday.

My family had a very strong Christmas tradition when I was growing up, and we would all go down to Wheatland, WY, where my grandparents lived. My fondest memories started on Christmas Eve where we all gathered at my Grandma Opal’s house to hang out, eat and play games all day long.

In the evening, we started with a grab bag gift – everyone drew a number which corresponded to one of the gifts under the tree. After that, we exchanged family gifts and then everyone would split up and go to the house they were staying for Christmas Eve.

In the morning, we would open presents from Santa, and then we would all gather back at Grandma Opal’s house to spend time together on Christmas Day.

To give back during the Holidays, we try to do the “giving tree” at Generations Church, as well as take part in Aims’ Allied Health Department’s gift donation. We find a family in need, and our department splits up the individuals in the family and donates to their wish list.

STEVE

Same as my wife, I’ve always loved the anticipation of Christmas morning. We would typically do Midnight Mass as a family on Christmas Eve, and then still be up early the next day trying to wake our parents up to get the gift opening started! My favorite gift as a kid was shared with my older brother, and it was a Sega Genesis gaming machine. The best gift ever!

These days, our tradition is very much the same — maybe open a couple presents on Christmas Eve, but then typically do an evening (or Midnight Mass) church service. Then the following morning, the family exchanges gifts, enjoys a great breakfast and spends time together.

Until it shut down, the Greeley Grizwalds house was a staple on Christmas Eve, but we still enjoy driving around and looking at some lights.

As for giving, we also do the UNC Athletics “giving tree” to help donate a few items to families through that pathway, as well.

“During the holidays, we like to provide food to many communities for their local dinners that they put on for the less fortunate.”

My favorite memory as a child was trying to stay up to catch Santa Clause in the act. One particular Christmas, I went downstairs around 11 p.m., and he had not visited yet.  I woke up a couple hours later, and he had arrived. His reindeer had eaten the carrot sticks on the roof, and I could see their hoof prints in the snow.

My current favorite thing to do is get together with family and friends to walk the neighborhood and sing Christmas carols to the neighbors!

During the holidays, we like to provide food to many communities for their local dinners that they put on for the less fortunate. I have long volunteered serving chili and soup for the Eaton Christmas Celebration.

We also have our kids fill out boxes of toys for Operation Christmas Child, making sure kids receive a gift and a message of Christ. And we like to donate coats for children to keep them warm over the winter months.

“Our favorite current tradition is every year when we wrap presents after the kids are in bed, we each make ourselves a heavy-handed cocktail and we watch White Christmas.” Neal and Kaylyn Kingman

Neal Kingman, Vice President at Bank of Colorado & wife Kaylyn Kingman, Assistant Principal at S. Christa McAuliffe S.T.E.M. Academy

Our favorite Christmas memory was the first Christmas Eve and Christmas morning we had with our oldest son Carter when he was finally old enough to “get it.” Seeing his excitement as parents was really special, and it was something we were fortunate enough to be able to experience again with his younger brother and sister.

Our favorite current tradition is every year when we wrap presents after the kids are in bed, we each make ourselves a heavy-handed cocktail and we watch White Christmas (my favorite Christmas movie) while we wrap.

We typically will also find a local Christmas “giving tree” and take a few tags and get gifts for those kiddos in need.

“Christmas morning for the last 26 years that we have been married has been a time to gather all of our family together —  eating wonderful food, exchanging gifts and truly thanking God for our blessings!” Patty and Mayor John Gates
Patty Gates, Retired Bank Executive, & husband Mayor John Gates

In my family, we always went to church on Christmas Eve — all of the children got a bag of nuts, an orange and a peppermint stick. Then, the dads would drive all of the kids around Greeley to look at the lights. When we got back to our house, Santa had been there! We were obviously on the early delivery route!

In the Gates family, John’s dad Gid (who was the most wonderful practical joker) would wrap empty boxes and put them out in the street in front of their house. Then, the whole Gates family would watch people stop, look around and happily pick up the “wonderful presents” they found!

Christmas morning for the last 26 years that we have been married has been a time to gather all of our family together —  eating wonderful food, exchanging gifts and truly thanking God for our blessings!

We have a special place in our hearts for kids, especially around the holidays. We donate to the Weld Food Bank, Santa Cops, Boys & Girls Club among others.

Angela
“As for the inside of our house, it looks like Santa himself threw up in it. Not a corner is spared with decorations.” Angela Turk

Turk, Registered Critical Care Nurse at Denver Health & husband Adam Turk, Greeley Police Chief

ANGELA

Christmas is such a magical time of year. It takes a full day to get ready for Christmas in our house. I have years and years of memories that consist of watching my husband dance around on the roof (always looking like he could fall at any time) putting up Christmas lights, usually in the cold. As for the inside of our house, it looks like Santa himself threw up in it. Not a corner is spared with decorations.

When our two boys, Kaden and Quinten, were little, our favorite tradition was to do something magical before Christmas. We would do a Santa train, go to Estes for the night, have breakfast with Santa or even go ice skating with the big guy.

Now that the boys are older, our favorite tradition is to go to Christmas Eve Church Service with family and friends before heading out to admire all the Christmas lights around town.

On Christmas morning, like most, the boys wake up early to see what Santa brought them, followed by our odd but favorite tradition of eating huevos rancheros for breakfast. Then, to top it off, we have a master feast which consists of a Cajun boil with our friends and family on Christmas night.

ADAM

I would echo what Angela, my real life boss, says. Angela does all of the interior decorating, planning and picks out our Christmas Eve outfits and Christmas light tours. Spending time together as a family is what I will always remember about Christmas. And Angela makes an incredible huevos rancheros!

Throughout the year, our family does a lot of volunteering with Meals on Wheels every other week and Veterans Affairs, which consists of driving veterans to their medical appointments in Cheyenne and Loveland on Mondays every other week. But, during the holidays, our primary giving is through Santa Cops of Weld County in the form of wrapping and delivering presents to underprivileged families.

“Hands down, our shared favorite memory will forever be welcoming our son into the world on Christmas Day 2009.” Kelli Johnson

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday! My husband and I share a love for all things about the Christmas season. The family time, laughter, spirit of giving and connection to our faith make it a magical time.

Hands down, though, our shared favorite memory will forever be welcoming our son into the world on Christmas Day 2009. That year, we spent Christmas Eve in the hospital waiting for him to make his entrance. We waited and waited and waited some more.

We were the only patients that evening, and when Caleb was born, we were surrounded by family and friends. A blessing from above!

Every year, even with a teenager now, we wake up to see what special treasure Santa has left. In the early years with our son, we prayed he’d sleep in and give us a few hours of rest after having stayed up late to assemble whatever special gift Santa left. Now, we wake up and wait for the teenager to rise and shine.

We always settle in with coffee and hot cocoa to see what special things were left in our stockings and take turns opening gifts. We enjoy the morning with Christmas music and the warm fireplace. For us, the day carries on, and in the early evening, we extend the celebration and family time for our son’s birthday celebration.

We love giving through our faith community and a hyper-local non-profit, Weld Family Cares, run by the company my husband works for. We usually sponsor a few families for the holiday by providing gifts for the entire family.

We also can’t pass up the “giving trees” that are set up around town. We usually pick a teenager close in age to our son and have him select a gift for that kid.

“My best memories were making gingerbread men and sugar cookies with my great-grandmother from my mom's side and going out to my other grandmother's house on my dad's side.” Hunter Hoshiko
Hunter Hoshiko, Owner of Larado Whiskey and H2 Consultants

My best memories were making gingerbread men and sugar cookies with my maternal great-grandmother and going to my paternal grandmother’s house to celebrate Christmas with the family.

The fondest memory I have, though, is getting my first shotgun when I was 12 years old. It was a memory I will never forget.

My family and I give to an organization called Northern Colorado Youth for Christ. It is an organization that supports teens in the Greeley area and helps guide them through meaningful relationships and mentorship.

They have an indoor skatepark, concert venue and kids’ hangout area. They also run a program called Rebalance — a program that works closely with District 6 to help with the mental health challenges that many of our youth are facing today.

Last year, because our kids are older, my husband Craig and I were missing buying all the fun toys at Christmas. So, we signed up to support the children of women who were being housed at the women’s shelter, A Woman’s Place.

They gave us the gender, ages and interests of several kids, and we had such a great time buying gifts that we hoped they would love. It meant a lot that we could help brighten their holiday when their families were in such a stressful situation.

We will do this every year from now on!

Front Range Santa

Being Santa Claus means so much more than donning a red suit and growing a white beard; it’s about embodying the togetherness and kindness that Santa represents to people of all ages.

Everyone who sees Santa Claus, at least for that small moment, is a child again!

We all become part of the timeless story—a reminder of the joy, warmth and love that the Christmas season represents.

For those interested in taking part in the seasonal spirit of giving, Santa recommends looking into these local non-profits: Santa Cops of Weld County, Weld Elves, Toys 4 Tots Weld County, Serve 6.8, United Way of Weld County, Genesis Project House, Hope House, WHALE Respite, NICU, A Women’s Place, Northern Colorado Veterans Resource Center and Catholic Charities of Denver (Guadalupe Community Center).

LOOKING TO GREELEY'S HOLIDAY PAST

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CITY OF GREELEY MUSEUMS, PERMANENT COLLECTION

Greeley has long embraced the spirit of Christmas with a blend of collective warmth and festive cheer.

During its early years, Greeley was a close-knit community where the arrival of winter brought families together in joyous celebration. Homes ornamented with simple, yet heartfelt decorations lit up the snowy streets, creating an always cozy atmosphere.

Neighbors exchanged homemade treats — from gingerbread cookies to warm apple cider — and shared

stories around crackling fires, fostering connections that helped establish and expand the city.

The town’s first Christmas festivities featured specialty gatherings that united residents throughout the area. These events included caroling in the streets — where voices rang out with holiday cheer — and shared meals that spotlit local flavors. Small parades and spirited participants marked the season, encouraging families to come together and celebrate.

As the years progressed, the charm of Greeley’s holiday traditions evolved, yet the essence of togetherness remained unchanged.

Local churches played a vital role, hosting candlelight services that filled the air with melodious hymns and offered a time for reflection and gratitude. The town square was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with twinkling lights and a towering Christmas tree, serving as a backdrop for further holiday merriment.

Through the years, Greeley’s Christmas spirit has endured, adapting to modern times while honoring its rich history. Today, the town continues to celebrate its heritage, inviting new generations to partake in the timeless joys of the season, ensuring that the warmth of community remains at the heart of every Christmas celebration.

Enjoy Greeley’s rich history through images and other exhibits at the Greeley History Museum (714 8th St.), where their gift shop offers postcards with all the photos featured in this article.

The Greeley History Museum artfully preserves the rich tapestry of our local heritage through captivating exhibitions and educational programs. Visitors are invited to explore the main exhibit, “Utopia: Adaptation on the Plains,” before discovering the museum’s other galleries, which feature refreshed themes annually.

Each exhibit showcases a wealth of artifacts and photographs, complemented by engaging, hands-on experiences that create a profound connection to the past.

Riding the Perfect Gift

Give the Gift that Keeps on Trekking this Holiday Season

With Greeley growing and poised for a biking renaissance, it just may be the perfect time to gift an e-bike to the cyclers in your life this holiday season. Here to help, Cade Campbell, who brings his own passion for cycling to town, has opened Blue Sky Cycles (916 8th Ave.) in Greeley, offering a new bike shop specializing in e-bike sales, rentals and repairs.

“I may not stand out in any major way,” Cade humbly says. “But I offer that ‘traditional bike shop feel’—the kind of place where customers feel like they’re getting a warm hug.”

A new father to five-month-old Levi, Cade runs the shop with his wife, Brittney, his high school sweetheart. Though he has worked at larger chain stores in the region, he prefers the close, personal connection he can foster with customers here in Greeley.

“I can sell my customers a quality e-bike for less than the big box locations,” he explains. “That’s what sets me apart.”

Originally from Texas, Cade moved to Greeley in 2020 and opened Blue Sky Cycles in 2023, just as bike sales were booming postCovid. A lifelong “bike nut,” he has worked in every facet of cycling—from BMX racing to delivering bike parts for a Denver-based warehouse.

In the midst of winter, Cade encourages locals to consider e-bikes with “fat” tires that can glide through snow and ice. “They’re perfect for winter rides,” he says, hoping to provide an ideal holiday gift. The future is e-bikes

With prices starting at around $1,000 for a quality Aventon e-bike, they are the perfect gift this holiday season.  Visit the store in person or online for all of your bike and e-bike needs: 916 8th Ave. /  blueskycyclesco.com.

These “little mopeds,” as Cade has referred to them, are doubly enjoyable as the rider has the choice between flipping the switch for an electric-powered propulsion or engaging his own humanbased pedal-power. Cade’s e-bikes are fast, durable, zippy with a powerful motor and can also provide a terrific source of exercise.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The value of a reasonably priced e-bike

Cade moved to Greeley for its relaxed vibe and saw a need for affordable entrylevel e-bikes. “Aventons are great ‘starter bikes,’” he says, “at $1,000 with a solid warranty.” His goal is to make e-bikes accessible to all. Customers can rent for $50 a day, credited toward purchase, plus get free lifetime tune-ups with any bike bought.

Happy trails! The gift that keeps on ... trekking!

“What we’ve got here is the Poudre River Trail,” Cade says of the 21-mile path from Greeley to Windsor. “There’s a few other little trails and parks in Evans, too,” Cade adds. “20 miles may seem a bit far for ‘Grandma,’ but you get her on an e-bike and it’s like an ‘equalizer.’ Now she can ride the whole way, right along with you!”

Another reason that Cade is proud to be operating his business in Greeley is because Greeley-ites love to shop local and support its burgeoning, small and independent-run businesses. Cade can’t wait to let more local denizens in on the fun of owning and riding an e-bike, which he also highly recommends as a unique gift for the person who “has everything!”

THE MANY

CHRISTMAS Cultures of

EXPLORING THE RICH TRADITIONS AND CULTURES THAT MAKE FOR DIVERSE SEASONAL CELEBRATIONS IN GREELEY

The holiday season comes alive with diverse religious traditions in Greeley — each culture adding its unique flavor to our town’s collective Christmas celebrations.

At St. Mary Catholic School, students participate in the Jesse Tree project during Advent. This tradition involves decorating a bare branch with handmade ornaments that represent significant biblical figures and events leading up to Christ’s birth.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Light the World donation drive [Christian Jones / The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints]

Each week, students hang new ornaments during a liturgy, connecting them to the story of salvation. This interactive celebration creates a meaningful bond between the children and their faith.

Meanwhile, Greeley’s Karen community, having migrated from the Myanmar border, celebrates a month-long festival known as Sweet December. For Christians, Sweet December is a joy filled, religious occasion that celebrates the birth of Jesus. For non-Christians, it’s a time for fellowship and rest after the harvest.

Kicking off on December 1, festivities include singing, worship services and midnight gatherings. The Karen people also showcase their cultural heritage this time of year through the bamboo dance.

Their unique Christmas tree is adorned with snacks and community symbols, further reflecting their robust tradition of sharing. Meals are central to their celebrations, often enjoyed on woven mats, featuring dishes like fish paste and sticky rice desserts, which bring families together in joy and gratitude.

Eritrean Orthodox Christians in Greeley meanwhile observe Christmas on January 7, following the Julian calendar. Their celebrations begin with a lengthy fast and culminate in morning church services, filled with prayer and song.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Greeley emphasizes service during the season through initiatives like the Light the World donation drive, collecting food and clothing for those in need. Members also participate in citywide events, such as a Live Nativity.

“In Greeley, Christmas spotlights a vibrant blend of customs and connections, where faith, culture and community unite.”

At the Unitarian Universalist Church, members create Yule logs, make miniature Christmas trees and gather for Water Communion and Ostara celebrations.

COLORADO GRIT COMES TOGETHER TO HELP YOUTH PLAYERS FOSTER MORE THAN JUST SKILLS ON THE ICE

Colorado GRIT owner Bob Bowden and son (and GRIT player) Quinn

Based out of Greeley’s Ice Haus, the Colorado GRIT, Colorado’s first-ever North American Hockey League team (NAHL), is growing deep bonds among its members and staff.

Prior to the arrival of the GRIT, Colorado was lacking opportunities for young adult players to boost their visibility and improve their chances of earning a Division 1 school commitment or professional opportunity in the sport. The NAHL is the only USA Hockeysanctioned Tier II Junior league, with 35 teams in 20 states across North America.

Between the ages of 16-20, NAHL athletes are provided the opportunity to develop, learn, train and grow.

Owner Bob Bowden, father of GRIT player Quinn Bowden, is not only grateful to provide hockey opportunities to youth players in Colorado, but he’s also blessed to mentor his son and encourage the team in becoming leaders of the future.

“We help to develop the players in the sport, while also teaching them to give back to the community by volunteering and acting as role models,” says Bob.

Bob emphasizes that the GRIT members operate out of a code of ethics, focusing on hard work, perseverance, discipline and (of course!) grit.

“The more we’re together, the more the trust and bond between the team grows,” Bob says. “We are family.”

When you have an open Friday or Saturday night, gather with friends or family to experience the energy of a GRIT game, a gem in our community.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.

Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.

One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.

Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.

These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just

about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.

“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”

We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.

To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.

The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
