The Love Local Issue

Let’s Love Some Local Lifestyle!
I'm penning this month's "Lifestyle Letter"—as I typically do—from one of our town's many bustling coffee shops.
The place is brimming with warm, welcoming folks: young families, lively groups of older women laughing louder than anyone else (and why not?) and a scattering of people like myself who are reading, working or simply savoring the spoils of another beautiful, bounteous morning in Greeley.

With these independent, small and local businesses keeping the lifeblood of Greeley coursing so vigorously, how could we not be grateful and, yes, in love with our local lifestyle?
You'll see what I mean in the feature articles ahead. You'll find a spotlight on our local literary scene, featuring established and emerging authors who labor away on their creative works right here in town producing books that sell worldwide. Then there's Greeley’s Creative District, continually expanding and connecting us to the regional arts scene with exciting new developments always on the horizon. And of course, who could overlook our very own washing machine museum—the only one of its kind in the world—run by retired electrical engineering professor Lee Maxwell?
I'll tell you something else: I recently connected with the social media manager of a well-known East Coast-based independent film company I wrote about for a new book I have coming out this month. And guess where, of all the places on the planet, it turns out he happens to live?!
Just as recently, I was introduced to a well-known political commentator on the West Coast whose book I'll be ghostwriting. He mentioned that his mother grew up in a small Northern Colorado town he was certain I had never heard of. Need I say where?!
Indeed, Greeley is a unique place that—for now—may still be considered a "hidden gem." But with everything our town has to offer—the vibrant residents featured in this issue, the creativity and the growing interest from those outside our community—it may very well not remain so hidden for much longer.
Thanks for the memory,

Tamra Heindselman Bianca Fisher
Realtor & Broker Associate,
Austin & Austin Real Estate Executive Director, Greeley
I absolutely love my community because it’s where my passions, family and career come together.
Being a real estate professional allows me to help people find their perfect home, which is such a rewarding experience. One of my favorite aspects of listing a home is exploring the diverse architectural styles and witnessing how each seller’s unique personality shines through in their home’s design and decor. Guiding clients through one of life’s biggest decisions is more than a job—it’s my way of making a positive impact on their lives and building lasting connections.
Family is at the heart of everything I do. My community has provided a fulfilling environment where I’ve raised my children and made many wonderful friendships.
Taking care of my health is how I show love to myself, and I’ve found my happy place at HOTWORX. The workouts not only keep me strong but also energize my mind and spirit, allowing me to give my best to everything I do.
Whether it’s helping a client, spending time with loved ones or focusing on fitness, I love being part of such a vibrant and supportive community!
Downtown Development Authority
There’s so much to love about our city, but I must say that I love Downtown Greeley the most (surprise, surprise!).
It’s simply impossible to recreate its unique charm that blends historic character with a vibrant, community-driven atmosphere. It’s here where local businesses and creative industries thrive— whether it’s quaint boutiques, award-winning breweries and distilleries, delicious restaurants or cozy coffee shops.
I love how Downtown comes alive with events like Blarney on the Block, Friday Fest, the Farmers Market, Oktobrewfest and WinterFest. And when there’s no major event, there’s always entertainment to enjoy—whether it’s live music, theater performances, axe throwing, fitness classes, pinball, comedy shows, museums, escape rooms or trivia nights.
Not to mention a stroll through Lincoln Park, discovering the outdoor public art or cruising along the nearby Poudre River Trail for a dose of fresh air.
The sense of community here is truly special, and I’m proud to lead the Downtown Development Authority with my incredible team!

Melissa McDonald Insurance Agent, State Farm
The thing I love about Greeley is the community and the people.
We have the most outstanding and fantastic citizens who live here. We come together as a community when things need to be accomplished for the betterment of our city and our residents.
Greeley is a generous place to live with big hearts that want to give back through volunteering, uplifting local businesses, supporting nonprofits, maintaining a clean city, and engaging in local events. Our residents want to take care of our city and take care of each other where they live, work and play. There are a lot of things about Greeley that I love, but our people and our sense of community are what I’m most proud of.

Lori Gama Founder / President, DaGama Digital Marketing Agency
I love owning my business in Greeley because it’s a community of connection and possibility built on shared dreams and mutual support.
As a long-time business owner, I’ve witnessed the remarkable camaraderie among local businesses that regularly band together to help our local nonprofits succeed. That’s what I love most about Greeley—the way we lift each other up. It feels like being part of a big extended family where everyone plays a role in making our community stronger. The more involved I become, the more I see how much and how many people from diverse perspectives truly care about this community. When challenges arise, solutions stem from collective effort and genuine care.
Greeley is like life: it’s what you make of it. For me, it’s a place of connection, opportunity, family and joy. It’s a place where big ideas take root and grow because we believe in each other and support a future that shines with potential.
“[O]ur people and our sense of community is what I’m most proud of.”

ELECTRONICS WHIZ LEE MAXWELL'S RECORD-BREAKING WASHING MACHINES
ARTICLE BY MATHEW KLICKSTEIN
Lee Maxwell at the helm of one of his 1,400 washing machines at his long-running museum
“I was interested in the mechanical artistry of the thing.”

If you head out to nearby Eaton—and more specifically, the grounds of Eaton Grove Nursery—you’ll find a unique building run by nonagenarian Lee Maxwell. Lee, and the building he designed and constructed with his own hands (and a little help from friends), is home to the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of washing machines on the planet.
Not surprisingly, it’s called the Lee Maxwell Washing Machine Museum. It’s not only a marvel to behold, but it’s also open to the public for guided tours that delve into both the museum itself and the fascinating, lengthy history of the humble yet hardworking household appliance that keeps our clothes fresh and clean.
A retired Colorado State University (CSU) electrical engineering professor and self-proclaimed tinkerer, Lee has spent nearly half a century meticulously curating and restoring his collection of over 1,800 washing machines. His passion for vintage appliances has turned into a labor of love
that educates, entertains and inspires those who visit this one-of-a-kind repository.
The machines—some dating back as far as 1840—range from primitive wooden hand-cranked models to early gasoline-powered contraptions. Visitors will also find the first electric washers, which revolutionized laundry day in the early 20th century.
Lee has devoted countless hours to disassembling, cleaning and reassembling each machine, restoring them to working order (yes, they still work!) with the precision and care of a master craftsman. As a result, Lee has earned the title of the foremost expert on vintage washing machines in the United States and possibly the world.
It all began in 1985, shortly after Lee retired from teaching at CSU after 23 years. With a new motorhome and a desire to explore, he and his wife, Barbara, set off on a cross-country road trip to Maine. Along the way, Lee’s pioneering spirit
“[T]he only place on the planet where you can see the full evolution of the washing machine.”

led him to a farm auction in Iowa where he purchased his first antique washing machine—a 1915 Maytag with a gasoline engine—for $80.
“At that time, I was interested in the mechanical artistry of it,” Lee recalls. “Even though I was an electrical engineer, it was the mechanical gears and everything like that that I really liked. So, we put it on the roof of the motorhome and drove off. By the time we got to Maine, I had purchased three more.”
What began as a seemingly spontaneous purchase quickly spiraled into a full-fledged obsession. By the time they returned home to Colorado, the Maxwells were the proud owners of 13 vintage washing machines, marking the beginning of Lee’s worldwide quest to collect these fascinating artifacts of domestic history.
Over the years, Lee—often with Barbara at his side—scoured flea markets, auctions and antique shops far and wide, traveling beyond the U.S. to Europe and Australia in search of rare finds.
Through word of mouth and a website Lee created to catalog his collection (oldewash.com ), the museum began attracting visitors curious to see his trove of laundry-related relics, which also includes blueprints, schematics, vintage memorabilia such as advertisements and an expansive collection of related contraptions that Lee built based on patents
for inventions that, in many cases, were never built by their original developers.
Tours are by appointment only, run these days by Lee’s son, Mike, who offers an educational and entertaining blend of wisdom, wit and wonder through hands-on demonstrations, ensuring every visitor leaves both amused and inspired.
“We’ve had people come from Cincinnati and Columbus, or even as far as France and Germany,” Lee says. “We usually get between 600-800 people per year.”
Much of Lee’s fascination with washing machines stems from his belief that these appliances represent more than mechanical ingenuity; they are symbols of cultural and social progress. His 2003 book, Save Women’s Lives: History of Washing Machines , chronicles how these devices eased the burden of household chores, giving women more time and freedom to pursue education, careers and activism.
These days, Lee spends much of his time and energy seeking an organization or individual willing to preserve and expand upon his work. He has already spoken with the Smithsonian Institution, but after multiple discussions and visits, no deal has been finalized.
“I like to say the museum is worthless and priceless in the same breath,” Lee smirks. “It’s worthless because I want to give it away. Priceless because

Well-curated and placed nostalgic memorabilia and paraphernalia also crowds Lee's museum throughout the massive space

it’s the only place on the planet where you can see nearly the full evolution of the washing machine.”
Meanwhile, Lee’s constant learning and tinkering continues. His days are filled with restoring, cataloging and building his beloved machines.
Lee hopes his tireless, yet joyful work will leave behind a legacy that not only preserves the history of these essential machines but also inspires future generations to find beauty and meaning in the everyday objects that shape our world, as he has for so many decades.
Washing Machine Museum
Lee Maxwell’s Washing Machine Museum is home to the Guinness Book of World Records’ largest collection of antique laundry machines.
Housed on the grounds of the Eaton Grove Nursery (35901 Co Rd 31), this have-to-see-it-to-believe-it museum bursts at the seams with vintage washing machines dating back to the 1840s, plus a treasure trove of related laundry tools, retro household appliances, memorabilia, schematics/patents and more from around the globe.
Whether you’re intrigued by Maytag’s surprising history or love nostalgic advertising, there’s something to delight everyone.
Tours are $150 for no more than ten people per group, are by appointment only and typically last around two hours. Children under 12 are not admitted. For more information, visit oldewash.com

The Greeley Creative District has been a Cornerstone of the Local Artistic Community for More Than a Decade
A Peek Into Greeley’s Creative District
ARTICLE BY DAN ENGLAND PHOTOGRAPHY BY BECKY SAFARIK

The Greeley Creative District emerged as an opportunity to spotlight a city often seen for its agriculture rather than its arts.
Founded in 2012, the District was inspired by a Colorado initiative to bolster the state’s reputation. While Colorado was known for skiing, mountains and breweries, a study from the National Endowment for the Arts revealed it also ranked first in residents who perform or create art. The state launched its Creative Districts program, an opportunity that Becky Safarik, a longtime Greeley community leader, found to be “too good to pass up.”
Becky partnered with Pam Bricker, head of Greeley’s Downtown Development Authority, and Susan Nelson, Marketing Director for the University of Northern Colorado’s acclaimed arts department, to form the District. With a carefully chosen board, the organization became one of the first certified by the state in 2014.
“Our mission was simple,” Becky says. “Greeley has a rich cultural personality, and this was a chance to amplify that through a state megaphone.”
The district spans from Downtown Greeley to UNC, though its efforts aim to benefit the broader community. Early successes established it as a leader for the initiative. In 2018, Greeley hosted the Colorado Creative Industries Summit, attracting visitors who left impressed by the city’s thriving artistic scene.
“They were blown away,” says Pam, who also helped boost Greeley’s profile by founding the Greeley Blues Jam with her husband Al. “It’s such a good thing to let the state know what you have to offer.”
Greeley’s Creative District embraces the city’s agricultural roots and cultural diversity, celebrating both through events like Agriculture Feast, which highlights local culinary arts and farm-to-table dining. Another major success is Día de los

Muertos, a cherished annual event honoring loved ones who have passed.
Beyond these marquee events, the District hosts Youth Art Month, DoTell!—an evening of personal storytelling—and Cacophonies, a program offering artists practical skills like marketing and finance. These initiatives spotlight the arts while addressing the needs of creatives.
The District also draws inspiration from Greeley’s founding principles. When established in 1870, the city prioritized art and culture in its planning, investments that continue to pay dividends. “Many artists and creatives are introverted and work alone, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need community,” Becky says.
Over the years, the District has built momentum, putting on more than half a dozen annual events. These efforts reflect a
commitment to making art accessible and relevant to Greeley residents from all walks of life. Whether it’s supporting emerging artists or hosting engaging public events, the organization has successfully carved out a space for creativity in the city’s fabric.
Looking to the future, the District envisions a physical space—a hub of engaged imagination—that will hopefully be developed soon. “The building will give us a base from which to operate,” Becky says, adding that the new hub will host events and support artists at all stages of their careers, fostering growth for individuals and the community. “We want people to understand,” Becky concluded, “that creativity is an important part of our existence.”
With its ambitious plans and ongoing work, the Greeley Creative District aims to deepen its impact and solidify the city’s place as a nexus of artistic and cultural vitality.

Creating Connection, Celebration and Community
Impact Through Coffee, Creativity and Compassion at Zoë's Café

In November 2009, Zoë’s Café (715 10th St.) opened its doors in downtown Greeley with a simple, yet powerful mission: to create a welcoming space where the community could gather, connect and grow together. Rooted in the vision of a local church, Christ Community, with deep ties to the area, Zoë’s has grown into a beloved local gem.
“Zoë’s has always been more than a café—it’s a community living room,” says Director, Ben Fusco. “It’s a place where people from all walks of life can come together, share their stories and find connection in ways that matter deeply.”
Over the past 15 years, Zoë’s has been the backdrop to countless memories and milestones. From proms and talent shows to fundraisers that have raised thousands of dollars for local causes like Habitat for Humanity and Jobs of Hope, the café has been a beacon of generosity and care. Whether celebrating weddings and graduations or offering solace during funerals, Zoë’s has united the Greeley community through all seasons of life.
At its core, Zoë’s is about investing in Greeley—one cup of coffee, one event and one connection at a time.
“It’s an honor to serve this city and to see how much Zoë’s has grown alongside it,” concludes Ben.
