What Was The Best Thing?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/241027061058-3c46a5bb6fb880c723f534c2bde2a065/v1/bb694803f07ec587e1384772662a21d6.jpeg)
I've never really been a fan of the question: "How was your day?" I think it's a cop-out. It's an easy way to have conversation that's usually pretty meaningless. I believe most people give the same old answers: "It was OK." "Good, how was yours?" "Not bad, I'm still standing upright." The question also lends itself to a quick turn to the negative. It opens the door to whine about the bad, to gossip about what you heard and to moan about co-workers, bosses and clients (not me, I love my clients). This can lead to self pity.
Now, I'm not much of a poetry person and people who know me well would probably bet I hadn't read one since college, but one poem has always stuck in my mind.
D.H. Lawrence wrote: “I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.”
With everything going on in the world, and there's a lot. Too much to go into...it can be hard to find a positive, but I urge you to look a little deeper.
My wife does this thing, and I wish she'd do it more but I've never told her because sometimes I push back and want to give an easy answer, a cop-out. When we sit down to dinner, and yes, we still sit down to dinner as much as possible. She goes around the table and asks everyone what was the best part of their day. The good days are easy, but sometimes it's hard. Sometimes we're so focused on the negative that we fail to see everything around us we should be thankful for. In all of the noise of the day, we fail to realize there's way more positive around us than we think. We've become so blind to all of the good that it's become expected, so we dismiss it. But it's there. There's so much to be thankful for every day, and I know that I, for one, need to do a better job of recognizing all of the "best parts of my day."
Life is amazing! Sure, there are ups and downs, but I implore you to take a real hard look around. Find what you're thankful for, say it out loud and appreciate this amazing life.

Managed by Greenwood Parks and Recreation staffers, these fields aren't open for public use but can be rented. The project reportedly had a $10 million budget. Additionally for use there is a splash pad; multi-use field suitable for soccer and cricket among other sports; a playground; and walking paths throughout the park.

MEMORIAL HEALTH
Johnson Memorial Health is a nationally recognized network of physicians, services and health care resources whose original hospital in Franklin has served patients as Johnson County’s only hospital since 1947.
Johnson Memorial Health provides award-winning services including cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes, maternity, orthopedic, sports medicine, pain, weight loss and wound healing care. The network also provides breast care, home/occupational care and outpatient rehabilitation services. The hospital team expanded to include the Greenwood Primary Care Center, Whiteland Primary Care Center, Franklin Primary Care Center and Stones Crossing Health Pavilion in the Center Grove area.
Greenwood City Lifestyle asked David Dunkle, M.D., Johnson Memorial Health president and CEO, about the hospital's notable achievements in patient services.

"THROUGH MAYO CLINIC, OUR PROVIDERS CONSULT DIRECTLY WITH THE WORLD’S LEADING MEDICAL EXPERTS, ENHANCING THE OUTSTANDING CARE WE ALREADY PROVIDE TO JOHNSON COUNTY RESIDENTS."
HOW IS JMH'S OVERALL APPROACH PATIENT-CENTERED?
"We believe in putting the 'Patient First' in everything we do at Johnson Memorial Health. We begin by prioritizing the well-being, safety and satisfaction of patients in all the decisions we make. This approach means medical, ethical and compassionate considerations come first, rather than financial considerations."
WHY DO SO MANY CHOOSE JMH'S DOCTORS AND PROGRAMS?
"Our patients choose us because our providers are highly-qualified. Many of them have trained at leading medical institutions and could practice at prestigious hospitals anywhere in the world. Their choice to serve at Johnson Memorial Health speaks to their commitment to the community and to delivering high-quality care in a more intimate, patient-centered environment, and I believe our patients appreciate that."
WHAT ASPECTS DO JMH'S PATIENTS VALUE MOST?
"Our patients value the convenience of receiving top-tier health care close to home. They appreciate that they don’t have to travel long distances to receive quality care—they can trust Johnson Memorial Health for their medical needs without leaving their community. That’s why we say 'great care starts here.' We have relationships with all the major Indianapolis hospitals, so if a patient needs a higher level of care, we can help navigate them to one of our trusted partners. And, of course, we're members of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which allows us access to the finest medical knowledge in the world. For complicated cases, we're able to easily consult with a Mayo Clinic provider and together determine the best approach for care. Again, this can be done without the patient traveling long distances and without any additional cost."

Imagine having 120 park-like acres with sidewalks, walking trails, fitness center, stocked fishing ponds, pickleball courts, tennis courts, a playground, a clubhouse and an indoor heated pool at one's disposal. Then envision adding access to a variety of other amenities, including a greenhouse, dining room, art studio, woodshop, computer lab, library and gift shop. All of these sought-after living dreams are reality at the Otterbein Franklin campus, an elderly care services company.
"We offer engaging and health-minded options for active independent senior living," explains Darci Underwood, Otterbein marketing director. "Additionally, we can accommodate memory care, assisted living, temporary respite support to assist caregivers and hospice needs."
She says their team is known for being a caring staff who provides enriching activities and respectful stewardship.
The campus houses apartments can be either independent or assisted living.
"Living at Otterbein Franklin is not about retirement, but about living an active, healthy life and still being able to plan for your future needs and preferences," Darci iterates.
The Otterbein Franklin Campus is in close proximity to Greenwood, Indianapolis and Columbus, which makes shopping trips and cultural excursions easy. They also offer convenient access to medical specialists and nationally recognized hospitals such as Johnson Memorial Health, Indiana University, St. Vincent and Franciscan Health.
The range of choices in independent living there include:
• Studio, 1-, and 2-bedroom apartments (can also transition into assisted living with no need to move)
• 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom homes
• 2- and 3-bedroom luxury cottage homes
• Rental-only options available
Darci says independent living is perfect for those who can live without assistance or support, but want the peace of mind of being at a retirement community where care is available if needed.
Otterbein is a Continuing Care Retirement Community, which means it's a senior living community that provides a continuum of support for life's phases. Assisted living arrangements are for individuals who need regular help with some of the activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing or grooming, while skilled nursing or long-term care is available for people who need round-the-clock medical care.
Post-acute care and rehabilitation also can be provided for individuals who need short-term care or therapy after a surgery, unexpected injury or illness.
A renovation project completed earlier this year on the campus included a new Wesley Center dining room called Restaurant 1070 and the Blaze Bistro for casual dining and residents to entertain guests. Darci says exquisite dishes, crafted by talented chefs, offer perfect blends of flavors in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
"Restaurant 1070 has a hibachi grill where reservations are always full. And, the Blaze Bistro has a great menu with weekly specials, and it offers outside dining," she delineates.
A new Creative Arts Center also was developed. This center offers many, varied classes in areas such as quilt making, painting and origami. "You name it, they're doing it there!" says Darci.
On campus, residents can choose from among other engaging activities, such as pickleball, exercise classes, water aerobics, theme parties, card games, educational programs and live entertainment. 317.736.7185

To revitalize, rejuvenate and rediscover the best version of oneself is to experience truly gratifying living. Just ask the mother-daughter duo of Kristie Geitner and Jessie Kennell, co-owners of Journey Health + Wellness in Greenwood.
They state they started their health care center during January 2023 out of personal needs when traditional medical approaches couldn’t fully address their family's health issues, including Lyme disease, skin cancer and chronic fatigue. "Our turning point came with guidance we received at the Envita Clinic in Scottsdale, where we learned the significance of detoxification and making healthier choices in what we eat and use daily," recalls Kristie.
Jessie says they then deepened their understanding of natural health practices while exploring detox techniques, digestive enzyme therapies and other holistic health methods.
Their center now provides a variety of treatments, such as digestive enzyme testing, massage therapy, Electroequiscope microcurrent treatments, muscle testing, oxygen therapy and red light/infrared sauna sessions. But it’s not just about the treatments and state-of-the-art testing, reminds Kristie. "We educate about nutrition, lifestyle adaptations and reducing toxin exposure. Our holistic method is designed to address health issues from the ground up, helping reduce inflammation, accelerate healing and support overall well-being."
As a digestive health professional and licensed massage therapist, Kristie and Jessie state they've discovered that unveiling root causes of health challenges is the key, especially when those issues involve inflammation, skin irritations, brain fog, depression, irritability, moodiness, fatigue and anxiety. To support the overall mission, they offer complimentary base consultations to discuss digestion,

movement, environmental factors, stress sources and other chief health complaints.
Detoxing is essential because toxic chemicals just don’t belong in our bodies, says Kristie. She adds that human bodies can handle small amounts of toxins through natural detoxification processes, primarily through one's cells, organs, tissues, lymphatic system, liver, kidneys, bile ducts and colon.
She emphasizes that it's imperative to remember toxins also can originate from parasites, metals and pesticides.
"However, the cumulative effect of repeated exposure to low levels of toxins can overwhelm these systems and spill over to other systems," Jessie states. "Like overflowing a bucket, the toxins must go somewhere. They can be stored in other locations of your body, such as tissue and fat cells, or pushed out through other means, such as the skin."
She and Kristie say consistent toxin overflow without giving a body a break, or the right support, can lead to chronic health conditions.
"Most people come to us due to hurting and bloated stomachs, or chronic migraines. Most don't know harmful bacteria can build up a protective biofilm, which is why antibiotics don't always rid infections or recurring issues," shares Kristie.
For anyone who wishes to jumpstart their detoxing journey, Jessie and Kristie sell a detox support kit of curated dietary supplements.
"My passion is helping people realize how important it is to lessen their toxin load, and that this self-care should be a lifelong endeavor. Our poor livers, they are our main filter systems. Health issues don't always show in bloodwork, and by the time they do, my experience is that the damage is already done," says Kristie. 463.300.4345

TIPS TO PREPARE FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS FOR GATHERINGS, PICTURES
Because dog grooming can get very busy around the holidays, it's best to book an appointment as soon as possible, particularly when considering optimal looks sought of dogs for a particular date or event. (A fresh cut could look like a recent one in photos, which may or may not be the goal.)

Dogtopia of Greenwood’s dog spa services include spa baths, brush-outs, ear cleaning, toothbrushing, nail trims and grooming. They apply hypoallergenic shampoos, conditioners and products designed specifically to be safe and gentle on a dog’s skin and coat.
Take advantage of Dogtopia's relaxing spa environment, designed to cater to the comfort of furry guests. Many dogs may get nervous around loud noises; so they offer a variety of drying methods, such as crate hair dryers or handheld options.
Long nails can be painful for dogs, and can cause health problems such as tearing and infection. Longer nails on super-excitable, jumping dogs also can hurt holiday guests.

Pets can be susceptible to certain infections and unwanted symptoms when their hygiene isn't tip-top. Getting a thorough evaluation from a groomer on dogs' body conditions before the New Year begins can lead to preventing future problems.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/241027061058-3c46a5bb6fb880c723f534c2bde2a065/v1/8ce0d6de43df55f9df7d07ad1d2d001e.jpeg)
Don’t use human hair dye on dogs. Be aware that human hair dye can irritate a dog’s skin and can make him/her sick if it’s ingested. It’s best to steer clear of hair dye on dogs, even if it’s a vibrant seasonal red color.

Once a dog has a haircut, trim or helpful bath, be sure to brush them frequently at home. A bonus is that brushings make great bonding times. Plus frequent brushing helps remove loose, shedding hair and prevents tangles.

THANK GOODNESS FOR CORNUCOPIA CHOICES
How Do Your Turkey Day Foods Compare To Scrumptious Selections Of The Duke Homes, Inc. Team?
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
While the talented team for Duke Homes, Inc., in Bargersville confirms they're most thankful this November for health, family (through blood relatives as well as those created by marriage or friendships), houses full of grandchildren and watching God’s life-changing work, they also indicate gratitude for "not having to worry about being without or not having enough." That sentiment extends to food they grow and sell through Aberdeen Farms Farm Market inside the Aberdeen community in Center Grove and food on their own tables.
Greenwood City Lifestyle surveyed the Duke team about their favorite fare for Thanksgiving feasts, and their authentic responses are fun to peruse for comparisons.
Eighty percent of the team consume appetizers before the main Turkey Day meal.
Most favorite, beforehand appetizers include charcuterie/grazing boards; cream cheese smothered in cocktail sauce and eaten with crackers; cheeseballs/crackers; shrimp with cocktail sauce; fruit trays; layered taco dip; barbecue little smokies; deviled eggs; olives ("they're their own food group in our family"); and an early start on dessert, "to make sure we don't get too full later."
Sixty percent choose turkey for their meat, while 10 percent select ham; 30 percent serve both meats.
A total of 70% bake or roast their turkey, however 10% smoke theirs, 10% deep fry it and 10% grill their holiday bird. One cited smoking turkey one year as "a polarizing event."
Regarding the age-old debate of whether to call the main side dish stuffing or dressing, it was a 70/30% split for the dressing reference, with a firm vote for oyster dressing. One astute respondent noted it shouldn't be called stuffing unless it's cooked inside the turkey cavity. Another suggested the best stuffing is made with sausage, water chestnuts and cream of mushroom soup.
This group enjoys cranberry options in a variety of evenly divided ways: 30% cranberry pepper jelly; 20% cranberry relish; and 10% jellied
from the can (an inherited tradition), as well as fresh cranberries soaked overnight in sparkling cider and rolled in sugar. However, 30% indicate they pass on having any cranberries.
Mashed potatoes commanded the top spot among enjoyed side dishes, especially those mashed with cream and lots of butter! Of course, green bean casseroles and baked corn dishes also are popular. One family cooks green beans in a crock pot with ham. About a third also serve sweet potatoes in some form.
Other sides are mac and cheese, roasted Brussel sprouts and fresh or homemade bread rolls.
Sixty percent are gravy lovers, while 20% bypass it. Several stated "gravy on everything because it isn't Thanksgiving without gravy." One shared with a grin: "Depends on which side of the family is cooking and how dry the food is."
Pumpkin, sugar cream, pecan and Oreo pies are top desserts, with a special "orange cranberry layer cake with orange zest butter cream, buckeyes, and my dad's homemade peanut butter fudge."
Among the best surprise dishes ever tried for this traditional meal were lobster, White Castle dressing, chicken noodle casserole, pheasant and goose.
One clearly agreed-to point among this team was: 'Yep to leftovers!'
“MY GRANDFATHER WAS REALLY INTO PHOTOGRAPHY. EVERY YEAR AFTER THANKSGIVING, OUR EXTENDED FAMILY WATCHED THAT YEAR'S SLIDESHOW OF PICS HE’D TAKEN.”
