Gulf Coast, AL February 2025

Welcome to The Love Local Issue!

As February approaches, we are reminded of the many reasons to celebrate love—not just for each other, but for the vibrant Island community we call home. Our Love Local issue is a tribute to the people, programs, and passions that make the Gulf Coast such a special place to live and thrive.

In this issue, we are excited to showcase some of our incredible local artists whose talent and creativity bring so much beauty and inspiration to our area. Their work reflects the heart and soul of our Island, and we’re honored to celebrate their contributions to our cultural fabric.

We’re also shining a spotlight on one of the most vital conservation efforts in our community: The Share the Beach turtle conservation program. Each year, just as endangered sea turtles make their way to the white-sand beaches of Alabama’s shoreline to nest, hundreds of dedicated volunteers gear up for another season of Share the Beach activities.

Alabama’s sea turtle nesting and hatching season runs from May through October, and this issue is the perfect place to learn more about these amazing creatures and how you can get involved. From protecting nesting sites to educating beachgoers, there are so many ways we can all play a part in preserving this essential part of our Coastal ecosystem.

As always, this issue is about coming together to honor the people and programs that make the Gulf Coast a place we’re proud to call home. We hope it inspires you to connect, create, and give back to this incredible community.

Thank you for your continued support of local artists, conservation programs, and all the businesses and individuals that make our community thrive. Together, we can keep the Alabama Gulf Coast strong, vibrant, and full of love.

This is our 30th Issue, and we want to thank the locals for the love.

Love local, live local. and spend locally,

Until next month...

While many might view her as just a busy mom juggling the challenges of homeschooling and managing a household, Deryl Kathryn is thriving as a talented artist, infusing her community with her unique perspective and creativity.

Deryl Kathryn’s artistic journey began in a home filled with encouragement and creativity. “I grew up in a household where I was encouraged to follow my talent and create,” she shares, reminiscing about her childhood. With a mother who was not only an artist but also started a stationery company, Deryl Kathryn was surrounded by creativity. This nurturing environment inspired her to pursue her passion for art. After graduating high school, she took a big step forward by attending Auburn University, studying Fine Art. It was a dream come true, but as life often does, it took her on a different path.

After meeting her husband and starting a family, Deryl Kathryn stepped back from her artistic pursuits to focus on motherhood. Yet, her husband saw the spark in her and encouraged her to reconnect with her art. “He urged me to follow my calling and get back out there,” she recalls. “At the time I was just painting our children’s nursery rooms and that’s when he said I should get back into doing what I loved, Charles is amazing like that.” With his support, she began to embrace her artistic side once again, igniting a passion that had never truly faded.

Today, Deryl Kathryn’s artwork reflects her life experiences, encompassing everything from joyful children’s portraits to breathtaking coastal scenes. PROTECTING the Coast

ACF’s Share the Beach Program and Its Impact on Sea Turtles

ARTICLE BY LILLIAN TAYLOR
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE ALABAMA COASTAL FOUNDATION

Nestled along Alabama’s picturesque coastline, the Alabama Coastal Foundation (ACF) is leading a remarkable initiative aimed at safeguarding the future of sea turtles through its Share the Beach program. With Alabama’s three sea turtle species (Loggerhead, Kemp’s ridley, and Green) endangered or threatened, the program plays a crucial role in monitoring, protecting, and ultimately helping to increase the numbers of these magnificent creatures.

Every year, from May 1 to August 31, ACF staff and over 400 enthusiastic volunteers patrol the 48 miles of Alabama’s coastline. Their mission? To conduct daily surveys for signs of sea turtle activity during the critical nesting season. These diligent efforts extend into the fall, as volunteers continue to monitor hatchling production from remaining nests, ensuring that every possible turtle gets a fighting chance.

The process begins with meticulous attention to detail. Every sea turtle crawl is documented. When a nest is laid, it is carefully marked, and specific data is recorded. Each nest is monitored for its incubation period, which typically lasts about 55 days. Once the hatchlings are ready to emerge, volunteers ramp up their monitoring efforts, eagerly awaiting the moment when tiny turtles burst forth from the sandy confines of their nest.

On the big day, the excitement is palpable. Volunteers play a pivotal role in guiding these hatchlings safely to the water, preventing them from venturing into roadways or other potentially harmful situations. The sight of dozens of tiny sea turtles making their way toward the shimmering Gulf waters is a heartwarming reminder of the impact that dedicated conservation efforts can have on vulnerable species.

Thanks to the tireless work of the Share the Beach program, over 112,000 sea turtle hatchlings have successfully made their way from Alabama’s beaches to the Gulf of Mexico. This remarkable statistic underscores the program’s effectiveness and the deep commitment of its volunteers and community supporters. Each hatchling represents hope for the future and is a testament to the positive changes being made to conserve our local marine life.

Want to get involved with the ACF’s vital work? The first step is to sign up for ACF’s free updates. Stay informed about the latest developments in sea turtle conservation and other important coastal issues, such as rip currents and osprey populations. ACF offers free resources on their website, which include educational programs like Coastal IQ, an Underwater Forest initiative, and information about their oyster shell recycling program.

While the registration process for volunteers in the Share the Beach program opens in March, opportunities to engage with the ACF abound throughout the year. You can contribute by purchasing supplies and equipment needed for the upcoming nesting season, among other items. ACF also runs a Coastal Kids Quiz program which has a final round (April 16 to May 7,)  about sea turtles. This program invites fifth-grade teachers, both public and private, from around the state to register their classrooms for a chance to win educational awards, fostering a love for marine conservation among young learners.

As they look ahead to this nesting season, the ACF aims to amplify awareness and support for their work. They are introducing a range of items available in their Shore Store. These items not only promote the ACF’s mission but also allow supporters to take a piece of the cause with them, sparking conversations about marine conservation wherever they go. FOR MORE INFORMATION, YOU CAN VISIT THEM

Opportunities for volunteering are posted online as well as donation needs. Joining ACF ensures that Alabama’s coastline continues to be a diverse ecosystem that supports endangered species from becoming extinct and preserves the beauty for future generations.

Alabama has three sea turtle species, Loggerhead, Kemp’s ridley, and Green, that nest along our shores.

Those interested in contributing can join ACF or make donations through their secure website. The impact of these contributions goes beyond financial support; they help to create a network of passionate individuals dedicated to preserving Alabama’s coastal ecosystems.

One of the most impactful aspects of the Share the Beach program is the sense of community it builds. Volunteers are united by a common goal: to protect and nurture the sea turtles that grace Alabama’s shores.

Each year,  ACF releases an end-of-season video that showcases the statistics and photos from all team leaders and volunteers. This recap serves as a celebration of their collective efforts and achievements, reminding everyone involved of the difference they have made. Watching the video is not only uplifting but also serves to motivate others in the community to take part in these vital conservation efforts.

As the ACF continues its important work, it invites everyone to join the movement towards a healthier coastal environment. Whether through volunteering, supporting educational initiatives, or simply spreading the word about the Share the Beach program, every action counts. Together, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to witness the wonder of sea turtles thriving in their natural habitat.

The Alabama Coastal Foundation’s Share the Beach program exemplifies the power of community-driven conservation efforts. By working together, volunteers, local residents, and supporters contribute to the survival of endangered sea turtles, promoting a healthier ecosystem along Alabama’s beautiful coastline. To learn more about how you can get involved, visit their website at https://www.joinACF.org and explore their social media channels for updates and inspiration. Join the cause to protect our marine life and help create a brighter future for Alabama’s coastal treasures.

THE ARTISTIC JOURNEY OF NICK AND MAYA CANTRELL

DEDICATED TO CREATIVITY

For Nick and Maya Cantrell, art transcends mere occupation; it embodies their very existence. The married couple, who met over three decades ago, have crafted an extraordinary journey that intertwines their love for art with their daily lives.

Nick operates his in-home studio, where he not only creates original art pieces but also offers limited-edition prints. One of the hallmarks of his artistic process is the custom framing he provides, using reclaimed wood to craft frames that are as unique as the

“LOCAL SHOWS HAVE ME BACK IN THE STUDIO ON A MONDAY MORNING.”

Nick’s artistic path began in an unexpected way. Before fully committing to his art, he worked as a FEMA contractor, often spending weeks away from home. Janet Searfoss, a Batik artist, ignited a spark of inspiration within him. Nick recalls, “I had always loved to draw, but I could never figure out how to bring color into my drawings. When I saw her work, it inspired me.”

In addition to Searfoss, another artist, Kathy George, further influenced Nick’s artistic direction. Kathy utilized batik art in innovative ways, incorporating it with paper to create stunning textures and visuals. Intrigued and eager to learn, Nick reached out to her for guidance. “I called her one day and asked her how she did it, and she told me it was all in the paper,” Nick shares. With this newfound knowledge, he dove into this medium, quickly finding his footing and establishing a unique artistic voice.

artworks themselves. He meticulously cuts the glass to fit each frame, ensuring that every piece is presented beautifully. His assistant, Rachel Lane, plays a crucial role in this process, helping to keep operations running smoothly. “She’s been with me for five years, and she’s really the one who keeps things on track,” Nick notes.

The Cantrells’ commitment to their craft has led them to win awards at some of the most prestigious art shows along the East Coast, all the way down to South Florida. Nick has cultivated momentum in the art world, gaining recognition for his unique approach to batik art. Each of his pieces is distinct, characterized by the way the wax interacts with the paper and how colors overlay and blend seamlessly. His work captures the essence of his experiences and the beauty of the world around him, making each piece a reflection of his artistic journey.

While Nick travels for shows and events, Maya plays a vital role in maintaining stability at home for the family. As the resident clay artist at the Coastal Arts Center, she dedicates her time to teaching and sharing her artistic gifts with both locals and tourists. “With Nick being gone for shows and events, we knew that we needed the stability,” she explains. Maya’s artistic journey took off around ten years ago, coinciding with the time when their children were still in school. Now that their kids are older, she has gained some freedom to travel with Nick to more art shows, but her primary focus remains on her local studio. “I do local shows that allow me to be back in the studio on a Monday morning,” she laughs.

Maya’s studio is a treasure trove of tools and remnants from various techniques she has explored over the years. Each piece tells a story, reflecting her growth as an artist. She finds joy in creating a variety of clay works, from functional pottery to intricate sculptures, and her enthusiasm is infectious. Through workshops and classes, she encourages others to explore their creativity.

Both Maya and Nick draw inspiration from the beauty of nature and their vibrant coastal community.

“I HAD ALWAYS LOVED TO DRAW. ”

The Cantrells’ journey is an inspiring testament to the power of art to transform lives. They have created a fulfilling life that resonates with creativity and connection. Their story exemplifies the idea that art is not just a profession; it’s a way of life that can inspire and uplift both the artists and those who experience their creations.

Maya can be found at the Coastal Arts Center, where she actively engages with the community and teaches clay classes and workshops. Nick showcases his work online at www.nickcantrell. com. Enthusiasts can browse his unique pieces and learn more about his artistic journey. Together, Nick and Maya Cantrell remind us that art is a vibrant thread that weaves through the tapestry of life, connecting people and inspiring creativity in all its forms. Their craft serves as a beacon for aspiring artists and art lovers alike, proving that with passion and perseverance, one can truly make art their life.
