Welcome to September! I

SEPTEMBER 2016 publisher

Lynn Bowles | Lynn.Bowles@LifestylePubs.com

t’s been a long hot summer in Tennessee this year. I think the dog days of summer of 2016 are behind us now. Its “Football time in Tennessee” and that means get ready for some cool, crisp nights.

This really is my favorite time of the year. As we’ll read in this issue of Hendersonville Lifestyle, it is also time to get out the grill for you favorite tailgate party, or at home with family and friends. In visiting Madison Creek Farm, I’m reminded that it won’t be long before it’s time to harvest your favorite vegetables and fruits of the season. And, like you, I will probably spend a good deal of time repairing my lawn from all the damage that was done to it because of the extreme heat this year. And we can now spend a lot more time outside without all the heat. I am looking forward to that.

This custom home was designed and built in 2008 by Gene Large and Ernst Construction (now Arthur Rutenberg Homes) and was featured on the Gallatin Friends of the Library Kitchen tour. The elaborate ceilings are signature features. In addition to being ornate and beautiful, the five signature ceilings reveal architectural detail that gives this house its special character. The designs include a hand painted dome, a wood framed dome, coffered, and beamed. The house has an open floor plan, but each room has a defined space that flows well together. If you enjoy boating, fish and wildlife, or the serenity of lakefront living, this could be the home for you! The large and flat backyard is a great venue for entertaining, recreation, or just viewing wildlife. You’ll enjoy watching heron patrol the shoreline for fish in the waters right behind the house. The house checks-in with 7,500 square feet of floor space. There are five bedrooms, each with a full bath, including 2 master suites with amazing views and sitting areas to enjoy the lake. The office is spacious but with a scenic view, you’ll be challenged to get much done!

stone's throw from Hendersonville, and a little off the beaten path in Goodlettsville, is where you’ll find Madison Creek Farms. The rich history of this third-generation family farm - owned by Mark and Peggy Lynn Marchetti (Loretta Lynn's daughter) - is only matched by the richness of the organically grown flowers, vegetables and herbs sprawled across six acres on the beautiful 38-acre property. The Lynn family purchased the farm in 1960 and Lynn Marchetti and her twin sister, Patsy, were born there. She says, “This was the first piece of America that my parents ever owned. These people are from Butcher Hollow, Ky. You don’t go there unless you have a jeep, a bulldozer or good feet. This was their jewel. And it’s even more special because this was the place my father bought, not my mother.” The family later moved to Hurricane Mills, Tenn. where Lynn Marchetti grew up. The Marchettis were drawn back to the farm in 2000. The couple were living in East Nashville where both were songwriters and Lynn Marchetti was also recording and touring. CONTINUED >

MADISON CREEK FARMS

(CON TI N U ED)

The family member who had rented the farm for 30 years had passed away and they found it in disarray with the house condemned and the property a dumping ground. While tempted by an offer from a neighboring development, “My whole thing was what it could be,” said Lynn Marchetti. “This is where the history of my life began, so the money wasn’t important to me. I wanted to figure out how to create a good life for us that was based on something more than music.” Mark Marchetti, originally from Pittsburgh, initially had his doubts. “She told me to plant zinnias and I’d never planted anything in my life,” he said. “I remember saying this isn’t going to work, but she’s young and pretty so I’ll humor her. Then as soon as they started popping out of the ground I was hooked. If you could have seen this place then and now, it was a process. It didn’t just happen. It’s taken over 16 years.” The couple initially grew only flowers. Up until 2008 they were the largest specialty cut flower farm in the state selling up to 300 bouquets a week in stores. And it was all done organically. Said Lynn Marchetti, “I’m the kind of farmer that reaches down and touches the dirt. When’s the last time most farmers can say that? 22

Hendersonville Lifestyle | September 2016

"I grew up only knowing how to farm organically. The word organic wasn’t even part of the language of that time.”

“There’s no place else you can go and say this blackberry pie comes from here from start to finish,” she says. It’s certainly well received with customers lining up the drive by 7 a.m. at times.

24

Hendersonville Lifestyle | September 2016

Lynn Marchetti believes “the whole organic thing is about sustainability, a closed loop.” But, there wasn’t much support early on. That’s why the Marchettis put together the Tennessee Organic Growers Association in 2001, to gain much needed recognition for organic growers in the state. The association grew to two dozen farms in just a few years. They also started building markets so they could sell their crops and goods. They started the Franklin Farmers Market and helped to start the East Nashville Farmers Market. “These were producer-only markets where everything had to come from your own farm. This was an important part of our growth,” says Lynn Marchetti. But in 2008 when the economy turned, business dropped for the farm. The Marchettis knew they’d need to adapt. That year they opened the farm to the public, began planting both vegetables and flowers and also started a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program where customers buy a share of the fresh grown food. “When we started the CSA it was again all about sustainability for me. How can I stay on-farm?” said Lynn Marchetti, who still tours about 80 days a year. They pulled away from the farmers markets. “Let them come here,” she says. “it’s a better experience.”

The farm has a Spring/Summer CSA which runs April through July, and a Fall CSA which runs late August through October with bi-weekly, on-farm pickup. Lynn Marchetti says, “The whole concept for the CSA was we pack the baskets with vegetables and then they can go cut their flowers and herbs. They can also go get more beans or lettuce or whatever. You look out there and see all these little kids running around. Grandma and grandpa’s farms are getting so far in between now. This is their moment of nature.” And on Saturday mornings during the season they open the farm completely to the public, not just CSA customers, to come out and cut flowers. On some of those Saturdays, Lynn Marchetti even hosts a Market Day where they sell jams, jellies and pies she makes from scratch. “There’s no place else you can go and say this blackberry pie comes from here from start to finish,” she says. It’s certainly well received with customers lining up the drive by 7 a.m. at times. But you can’t talk about Madison Creek Farms without mentioning what the Marchettis call ‘the wedding tree.’ Marchetti reflects, “When we first came out here Peggy looked at that tree which was then in a forest and said ‘you know, there’s something really special about it.’ Then we started the farm and people would come out to buy vegetables and CONTINUED >

flowers and they’d say they’d like to get married out there. Peggy loved the idea, but again, it took me awhile. I didn’t grow up like that.” Lynn Marchetti however grew up on her mother’s ranch in Hurricane Mills which was the seventh-largest tourist attraction in Tennessee so she was much more comfortable having the public in her home. But, says Marchetti, “We had our first wedding by the tree and it was spiritual. I looked out with tears in my eyes watching the ceremony. Then I realized this was a great idea.” Now they host weddings in May, June, September and October. Yet even with its storied history, make no mistake, Madison Creek Farms is not a tourist attraction. There’s no memorabilia, no impromptu concerts. “This isn’t the place for that,” says Lynn Marchetti. “The people that come here; most don’t even know. It’s not relevant to them and it’s nice that there’s another reason they’re here.” 26

Hendersonville Lifestyle | September 2016

For all the farm offers, to the Marchettis it represents a place where life is simple. “This is the last vestige of my mother’s and father’s simple life, before Loretta became a country music icon. This was the last place she had her own little garden that she still talks about to this day. This was her favorite place,” says Lynn Marchetti. It also represents a place where a sense of community can blossom, cultivated by the warm, welcoming spirit of the Marchettis. “It’s really important to protect these little places. This farm was going to be 80 houses. Look at it now,” she says. All told, Madison Creek Farms is a place to be treasured. Lynn Marchetti sums it up perfectly, “This is our church. And it brings so much to everyone who experiences it.”

utumn will be here soon, with moderating temperatures, football and, above all, backyard grilling. Just step outside at any given time on a Saturday evening in Hendersonville and you’re sure to smell some kind of smoky charcoal or gas grilling going on. After taking in the tantalizing aroma of sizzling burgers or steaks, you may decide that it’s time to either purchase a new grill or maybe just brush up on your skills. If so, there’s no better place to turn than the Hearth & Grill Shop on Thompson Lane in Nashville With 42 years of experience in the grill business, Jeff Lunsford knows what he’s talking about when it comes to anything related to grills. The Hearth & Grill Shop carries gas grills, charcoal grills, Weber grills, Big Green Eggs, top-of-the-line FireMagic grills and pretty much any part or accessory you might possibly need to keep your grill up and running. “Whichever you choose, don’t just buy the cheapest grill,” says Lunsford. “Get one that you know parts and accessories will be available”. The first thing you need to determine when purchasing a new grill is whether you want charcoal or gas. There are many notable differences that should be considered before taking the leap. Some people 28

prefer the easy maintenance and reliability of a gas grill, while others swear by the smoky flavor you get from a charcoal grill. “Gas is easier to light and maintain the temperature,” says Lunsford. “It’s also more versatile.” With a gas grill, you can simply fire it up and be cooking in a matter of minutes. They’re easy to use and control and even help aid in self-cleaning.

“Maintaining temperature is harder because a charcoal grill will sometimes burn out before you are through cooking.” He recommends that you use a good natural hardwood charcoal and steer clear of lighter fluid for starting up the grill. He notes that some people seem to think that the taste of the starter fluid is the actual

“Trial and error with cooking is one of the fun things about grilling,” Lunsford says. “You can cook just about everything on a grill.” “Charcoal provides a smokier flavor but usually you need to clean the old charcoal ash out, light and wait for the coals to ‘get right’ before cooking,” says Lunsford.

charcoal flavor. Instead, he says to use an electric starter or starter blocks without added chemicals. CONTINUED >

GRILLING GAME (CON TI N U ED)

For maintenance, it’s recommended that you burn off the excess grease after use on a gas grill. You also need to occasionally give the cooking grids a good brushing (soap and water once in a while) and take out the burner once a year to clean the ports. For charcoal grills, you need to clean the grid the same as a gas grill. Make sure that you don’t leave charcoal ash in the bottom of the grill. When it’s finally time to do some grilling, a good spatula and some tongs are really all the equipment that you need. Since cooking times and measurements vary, it’s sometimes hard to give an exact recipe. “Trial and error with cooking is one of the fun things about grilling,” Lunsford says. “You can cook just about everything on a grill.” He recommends grilling burgers and steaks at a high temperature. In order to produce good results, sear both sides on high heat, then gradually turn the heat down to medium. Chicken and seafood are generally cooked at a low to medium heat. “The main thing is to be sure not to overcook,” he says. “Stay with it and test frequently for doneness.” For bratwursts and other sausages, he finds that low to medium heat seems to work best. Since most sausages usually have a lot of grease, he says that you shouldn’t put the grill on high and then leave. Always keep an eye on them. He also recommends grilling vegetables directly on the cooking grid as the flavor of the smoke and grill will work its way into the veggies. “The grilled flavor that everyone loves comes from the grease dripping down on the hot coals and making smoke,” he says. “This not only helps get rid of a lot of the grease, but it makes everything taste wonderful.” With proper maintenance, there is no reason why a gas grill won’t last 10 to 20 years. A charcoal grill is generally not as ruggedly built as a gas grill, but should still last a decade or more. At the Hearth & Grill Shop, they are still selling replacement parts for gas grills that are well over 30 years old. If you’re dreaming of serving up delicious steaks, pork chops and shrimp skewers on the grill, there’s no day like today to get rolling with your own tradition. Perhaps it’s time the mouthwatering smoke and smell of barbecuing meat in the air comes from your very own backyard.

2016 TESLA MODEL 3

Base Price: $35,000 EPA Range: 215 miles per charge Est. tax credit: $7,500 Body Type: Sedan

MUSK'S STATE OF THE ART AFFORDABLE, ELECTRIC CAR IS FINALLY HERE ARTICLE DONALD HAWKINS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TESLA MOTORS

I

n 2006, Elon Musk published a blog post outlining his longterm vision for Tesla. At the time, Tesla was still two years away from delivering the first Roadster, the company’s first product.

“The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium,” Musk said. “Then, we’ll drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model.” The base-level Tesla Model 3 will come standard with a rear-mounted single motor capable of launching the car from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in about six seconds. A high-performance dual-motor AWD configuration will also be offered, though Tesla has offered little in the way of performance stats for the car. Journalists who were offered the opportunity to ride in the car reported a high-performance feel that would be familiar to anyone who has been in a Tesla. Tesla announced the driving range in the Model 3 to be “at least 215 miles.” Achieving a 215-mile range will require a pack, most likely, of about 50 kilowatt-hours. Some analysts believe that Tesla is already approaching a cost of $200 per kWh, which would put the Model 3’s pack at around $10,000. Tesla’s longterm goal is to use mass production at its Nevadabased factory to bring the cost well below this level. 34

Hendersonville Lifestyle | September 2016

Seats: 5 Features: Autopilot Hardware, Supercharging

A 240-volt Tesla home charging station costs $750, not including installation. We expect the Model 3 to use an on-board 10 kW charger, like its sibling vehicles. This means owners can add 30 or more miles of range for every hour of charging at home. With its sizable battery pack providing more than 200 miles of driving range—and the average commuter traveling about 40 miles per day—most drivers will find they have plenty of energy reserves on a daily basis. In terms of longer distance highway trips, Tesla offers its current vehicle owners free access to around 400 Supercharger sites in the United States. These high-speed fast-chargers are capable of bringing a Model S battery pack to 80 percent of capacity in about 40 minutes. This opens up new possibilities for interstate travel for many EV drivers. The Model 3 is slated to begin production in late 2017, but chances are you’ll be in for a much longer wait if you didn’t put down a $1,000 refundable deposit in the first hour after Tesla began accepting pre-orders. In just two weeks, Tesla registered more than 300,000 pre-orders—a level of interest that is truly unprecedented for a car that nobody has driven yet and barely seen. Elon Musk’s stated goal is 500,000 deliveries by 2020, though many analysts doubt this projection in light of how long it has taken to for Tesla to reach peak production capacity in the past—as well as the company’s dependency on reaching full production at its battery factory. COLDWELL BANKER®

L A KESI DE RE ALTOR S Realtor Specializes in Working with Baby Boomers and Seniors

For SENIORS who have spent a lifetime in one home, selling their residence and moving can be especially stressful. Vicki McAnulty strives to make that transition a little smoother. “I was curious about the Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) designation because I was helping care for my pa rents. I also recently sold the home where we raised our children. I understand the emotions involved.” As a Realtor who holds the SRES designation, Vicki is dedicated to work with seniors searching for new housing options. Because seniors are living longer and baby boomers are aging, McAnulty believes that having the knowledge to assist them is critical. “Working with Seniors takes a lot of time, care, and compassion; but it is worth it because I’m helping someone and that is very important to me.” Vicki provides a free Moving On guide that is tailored to Seniors and their families.

As a Real Estate Agent, I’m often Asked: “Is this a good time to be selling a home?”

A

utumn is considered a great time to list your home on the market. Linked to the “back to school” mentality, with the leaves turning beautiful colors and nice cool crisp fall temperatures, you’ll have a great opportunity to sell your home -- often to someone who’s already in your neighborhood. Another reason to consider autumn, there are no major holidays to contend with and the weather is still mild. No matter what time of year, there are always serious home buyers out there. If you are interested in the marketability of your home or know someone looking to move call me today! I would love to put my expertise to work to help!
