T

he changing of the colors from vibrant, summery greens to autumnal yellows, rusty oranges and dark reds. The smell and crunch of freshly fallen leaves, the taste of warm apple cider and perfect pumpkin pastries—so much pumpkin. The windows-open Saturday football days and the chili-in-the-Crock-Pot Sunday football afternoons. The shorter days spent at school and outside and the cooledoff weather after those dreaded dog days of summer. The commencement of all of these wonderful things can only mean one thing: fall is in the air. And here at Hendersonville Lifestyle, we’re ready for some of the best things this season has to offer, starting with our area's higher educations institutions—Union University, Welch College and Volunteer State Community College—in this issue. You can truly get a great education at one of these fine schools without leaving Sumner County. That has only been the case for us here for a very short time, and I feel a lot of people here will take advantage of it. You will also find in this issue coffee, beer and comfort food. Whether you’re enjoying nachos at a game, coffee from your cafe of choice or beer from your go-to sports bar, we hope you feel festive this fall with all of the great food, sports and drinks to be found. Here’s to hoping October’s issue of Hendersonville Lifestyle gets you in the autumnal spirit and continues to inspire you with our great, local articles connecting you with the Hendersonville community.

Henderson Hendersonville Area Colleges Higher Education in Hendersonville —From GED to Doc torate ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY RICK MURRAY

O

ver the past 10 years, there has been

a quiet revolution in higher education

in Sumner County. Before this period, residents seeking post-high school educational opportunities beyond the community college level had to attend institutions located outside of the county. These options typically resulted in significantly higher educational costs due to campus room and board or commuting expenses. However, local students in 2017 are facing a dramatically different educational landscape than their predecessors did just a few short years ago. The addition of Union University in 2008, coupled with the establishment of Welch College in 2016 and the continued growth of Volunteer

"The most popular field of study is the University Parallel program, which permits students to earn associate’s degrees before transferring to four-year institutions to complete bachelor’s degrees," Vol State President Jerry Faulkner says. Finding Your Perfect Coffee Roast at Portside Java ARTICLE EMILY VANBROCKLIN Coffee. It's the liquid that fuels America. According to a recent statistic, more than 50 percent of Americans—that's more than 150 million people—drink at least one gourmet coffee each day with the average coffee consumer downing 3.1 cups per day. It comes as no surprise that many coffee connoisseurs prefer one coffee roast over another. Roasting determines the flavor of coffee by causing the green coffee beans to change in taste. At lighter roasts, the coffee will maintain the flavors of the bean itself which are created by its variety, processing, altitude, soil content and weather conditions in the location where it was grown. As the beans darken to a deep brown, the flavors created by the roasting process begin to overpower the origin flavors of the bean. At darker roasts, the roast flavor becomes the prominent flavor, often making the origin flavor of the beans quite difficult to detect. With so many different roasts available, how do you go about choosing the perfect one for you? Several key factors to consider when making your selection include the coffee's origin, variety, processing method, moisture content, bean density and desired flavor characteristics. Or, you could head over to Portside Java on Walton Ferry Road! Portside Java offers several different single origin roasts—the bean comes from one specific place —as well as three house blends. The key to making the perfect blended coffee, according to owner Scott Howard, is to "get the coffee as dark as possible without losing the individual flavors of the individual origins of the beans in it."
