“There is no more profitable investment than investing in yourself.”
Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart Investing… that’s quite a word, isn’t it?
On the surface, it seems to be a simple economic term in which a person exchanges some form of assets, typically money, in the hope of getting some kind of return back. However, if you look closely, you will see that the concept of invest ing is much broader than it first appears.
Every day, we have the option of investing in many things, including our families, our communities, our careers, and of course, ourselves. Regardless of what we invest in, we hope that something good will come about as a result.
As we turn the calendar to April, we at Hendersonville Lifestyle believe that this is the perfect time to take a look at how and what we choose to invest in. This month we are bringing you several inspiring stories about people and organizations who are actively supporting a diverse array of causes that are creating great returns for our community.
First, we begin our journey by visiting with a local financial advisor who has been helping his clients build wealth and financial security for over thirty years. We think that this article is particularly timely given that it is April – tax season.
Our next stop takes us to centerstage as we explore how the State of Tennessee is investing in one of our most priceless treasures – our musical heritage.
Continuing, we take a look at a local group who is investing in Hendersonville through its ongoing community beautification efforts.
Finally, we return to the world of finance to meet with a local insurer to gain a few tips about how to protect many of the things in which we have invested.
As always, along with our features, we bring you the best in local happenings to keep you in the know about good things happening in the City by the Lake.
So come along with us this month as we invest in ourselves, our families and our community – you will be glad that you did.
Enjoy spring in the 37075,

Navigating the maze toward financial security and wealth management is not easy, and it helps to have a trusted advisor to help avoid the pitfalls along the way. For many families in Hendersonville and across Middle Tennessee, that advisor is Kevin Collier, founder and principal of Collier Wealth Management. Kevin has been a professional advisor since 1991, and he has a developed a proven track record of providing his clients with innovative strategies for achieving their financial goals.
Recently, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with Kevin to find out more about the financial landscape in 2025, and to pick up some tips to help our readers pursue their personal goals.
“FINANCIAL
UP ENOUGH ASSETS TO BE ABLE TO WEATHER THE FUTURE." - KEVIN COLLIER
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL WEALTH ADVISOR?
“Just like professional athletes benefit from continually working with a coach, we believe clients can accomplish significantly more by teaming up with the right wealth management firm. One of the most important things we do is to help people avoid significant mistakes due to human error. After all, two heads are better than one, and we can help clients detect and avoid pitfalls that they may not have noticed on their own.”
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD A PERSON SEEK THE ADVICE OF A PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL ADVISOR?
“Unfortunately, a lot of people wait until late in life to get serious about their financial wellbeing. Experience has shown us that the sooner a client begins working with the right team of professionals, the sooner they will begin to see results. At Collier, we love working with different family generations, including our older clients, their adult children and even their grandchildren. We stress to clients that time can be a friend, or it can be an enemy. When they begin their financial planning journey early, time becomes an ally.”
GIVEN TODAY’S CHALLENGING ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR STRATEGIES TO HELP ENSURE FINANCIAL SECURITY?
“Financial security really comes down to building up enough assets to be able to weather the future. I call it the endowment method of planning for retirement or other long-term goals. The endowment method is simply building up a large base of assets that can support the cash flow stream needed during retirement. Some people prefer to overfund their financial base for additional security, while others choose investment strategies that provide guaranteed income. Either way, we have experience in all of these areas.”
WHAT FACTORS SHOULD A PERSON CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING A PERSONAL FINANCIAL ADVISOR?
“Clients should seek out someone who is trustworthy, competent and experienced. We encourage people to consult with trusted friends and relatives to determine who
Kevin Collier
Kevin Collier is the founder and principal of Collier Wealth Management, one of Middle Tennessee’s leading financial advisory firms. Located in Hendersonville, Kevin and his team have been helping clients build stronger financial foundations for over twenty years.
Kevin began his journey as a trusted financial advisor in 1991 with J.C. Bradford & Company. Not long after joining Bradford, he became one of the youngest partners in the firm’s history. Over the years, Kevin saw Bradford go through a series of mergers with larger firms, including Paine Webber and UBS. Before long, he felt the calling to start his own firm and become and independent advisor.
After founding Collier Wealth Management in 2004, he affiliated with LPL Financial, the nation’s largest broker dealer serving independent financial advisors. Since then, Collier Wealth Management has become a trusted place where clients can receive comprehensive financial advice and services that will help them pursue their personal financial goals.
Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from Lipscomb University, and an MBA in accounting and finance from Vanderbilt University.
they use for advice. We also recommend checking customer reviews, such as those on Google. We take pride in our Google reviews because they are genuine, and they tell the stories of the families we have helped.”
HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS ALIGN THEIR PERSONAL FINANCIAL GOALS WITH COMPATIBLE INVESTMENT STRATEGIES?
“We take our clients through a risk assessment exercise in which we educate them on the historical performance of different investment types, and then we gauge their tolerance for volatility. Risk tolerance cannot be accurately determined if clients do not understand how investments work.”
WHAT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ARE OFFERED BY COLLIER WEALTH MANAGEMENT?
“At Collier, we practice wealth management, which we feel should incorporate all aspects of personal money management, including financial planning, investment management, tax planning, estate and trust planning and risk management. We are a holistic firm that can go anywhere and do anything to help our clients pursue their goals.”
DO YOU COORDINATE FINANCIAL STRATEGIES WITH OTHER CLIENT PROFESSIONAL PARTNERS?
“Yes, we happily collaborate with other professional service providers, including CPAs, estate planners, attorneys, insurers and more. The more that we know about a client’s circumstances, the more we can help.”
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST FINANCIAL MISTAKES THAT YOU HAVE SEEN PEOPLE MAKE OVER THE YEARS?
“The biggest mistake that we see is when clients change the allocations of their investment assets too often based their personal feelings about risk tolerance. Changes should only be made after careful consideration and in conjunction with a professional advisor.”
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT WEALTH MANAGEMENT THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER?
“If you don’t understand something, or if something sounds too good to be true, you should avoid it. There is a lot of misinformation being shared out on the Internet and other media outlets, as well as testimonials by salespeople who are just trying to push products. It is always better to be safe than sorry.”

INVESTING IN THE PRESENT TO SECURE TENNESSEE'S MUSICAL HERITAGE
Nashville is considered to be the hub of everything music in Tennessee – after all, it is Music City. However, the sounds of original music span the entire state, from the blues of Memphis to the bluegrass of Bristol. Along with providing boundless entertainment, Tennessee’s music industry is also a vital economic driver, providing employment for thousands of people each year.
Recognizing the importance of music to the state, the legislature created Tennessee Songwriters Week in 2019 to spur continuing growth in the music industry. Since its inception, nearly 5,000 artists have performed their songs in venues from the Mississippi River to the Smoky Mountains.
“Songwriters Week provides a stage for songwriters to share their original work while spotlighting the craft that put Tennessee on the map – songwriting,”
says Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Public Relations Media Manager Jill Killgore. “Each year, the competition provides fans with the opportunity to explore the musical story of Tennessee from the ones who are writing it.”
The Songwriters Week competition consists of two phases – preliminary and showcase rounds. The preliminaries are held first in more than seventy venues across the state. During these rounds, participants perform before an audience and a panel of music industry judges. At each site, the judges select two individuals to move on to the next phase – the showcase round.
The showcase round consists of only seven events, highlighting the top performers from all of the preliminaries. However, unlike the preliminary rounds, only one winner is selected at each showcase. Subsequently, the seven regional winners will perform at an exclusive event at the historic Bluebird Café before an audience of music industry professionals. Each winner will also receive a custom Taylor guitar, a $100 travel gift card, a two-night hotel stay in Nashville and a one-year membership to the Nashville Songwriters Association.
Since 2023, Sumner County has hosted two of the Songwriters Week events each year – a preliminary and a showcase round. This year, the Palace Theater in Gallatin hosted a preliminary round on Jan. 31, followed by a showcase at the Temple Theatre in Portland on Feb. 28. Both of these events were sponsored locally by Sumner County Tourism.
“Hosting Tennessee Songwriters Week events in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is a wonderful opportunity for our community,” says Sumner County Tourism Director of Business Development Madie McCormick. “Events like these provide us with the opportunity to deepen our entertainment roots, which will result in an abundance of economic growth, vitality and opportunity for us all.
Organization
Over the last few years, Hendersonville has become one of the most popular relocation destinations around. Friendly people, outstanding schools, great shopping, dining and recreational opportunities combine to create a quality of life that is unparalleled in most cities its size.
Along with its other positive attributes, Hendersonville is also a very attractive community. From the shores of Old Hickory Lake to expansive park lands, the city is blessed with natural scenic beauty.
However, keeping up the city’s pleasing curb appeal does not happen automatically. It requires constant diligence and a lot of hard work. One of the people who understands this fact is Kathy Paschal, chairperson of Beautiful Hendersonville.
“Beautiful Hendersonville is special city committee whose mission is to develop and promote community awareness and involvement in beautifying and maintaining Hendersonville through education, litter prevention, aesthetic maintenance and improvements,” says Kathy. “The committee was originally founded in the 1980s, but it became dormant over time. The Mayor and Board of Aldermen reconstituted it
three years ago as a volunteer committee, and we have been busy since then.”
Since its rebirth, Beautiful Hendersonville has had a significant impact all across the city. The seven-member committee, working in tandem with city personnel and community volunteers, has accomplished numerous projects that have improved Hendersonville’s appearance.
Some of the group’s most visible accomplishments have been painting the Main Street bridge that crosses Drakes Creek, upgrading the city’s Christmas wreaths and banners, rebuilding the Memorial Park gazebo and landscaping the surrounding area, distributing art-decorated trash containers around town, coordinating biannual citywide clean up days and organizing a special clean up event following the December 2023 tornado.
“We have worked really hard to try and improve our city’s image through our beautification efforts over the past three years,” says Kathy. “Our list of projects just keeps growing and growing, as does our city.”
While much of Beautiful Hendersonville’s work involves hands on activities, such as painting and pressure

washing, there is also a strong educational component. Kathy and her team understand that the best way to build a community that cares about maintaining the city’s appearance is to start with its youngest citizens.
“We love to talk with young children about litter,” says Kathy. “We will be visiting twelve different elementary schools this spring to teach 3rd graders about what litter is, where it comes from, why it is bad for our community and how to prevent it. We also provide each student with custom vehicle litter bags for their parent’s vehicles as a reminder that preventing litter begins with each of us.”
Beautiful Hendersonville’s educational efforts also extend outside of schools and into the city’s neighborhoods. Each year, from April through October, the committee presents special beautification awards to citizens and businesses who have gone above and beyond to enhance the city’s appearance through personal property maintenance.
Volunteers of all ages participate in clean up days.
“We issue our awards based upon recommendations from the property owners’ neighbors,” says Kathy. “We also place special signs in the yards of their properties to serve as examples for the community.”
Although Beautiful Hendersonville has accomplished a lot in a short time, much work remains to be done. Kathy and her team are already actively planning new projects for the remainder of 2025 and beyond.
“We have several initiatives that we hope to accomplish in the coming months,” says Kathy. “Our plans include having a mural created to memorialize our city’s resilience after the tornado, hanging floral planters near the entrance to the Sanders Ferry Greenway, replanting the Japanese garden area in Memorial Park and clearing and cleaning up some of the city’s oldest cemeteries.”
Persons interested in becoming involved with Beautiful Hendersonville are encouraged to reach out directly to Kathy at beautiful@hvilletn.org.
Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you?
Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction.
Today’s economy can be a confusing environment, filled with uncertainty and potential financial pitfalls. The rapid pace of technological change and innovation has created an entirely new language, filled with words such as bitcoin, cybersecurity, unicorns, meme stocks, and of course, artificial intelligence or AI. At times, it seems that the days of simply wanting to earn a living and achieve financial security seem to have fallen by the wayside. Fortunately, all is not lost. Most of us still want to work hard, take care of our families and make sure that our hard-earned assets are protected. To gain some insight into the world of insurance in 2025, Hendersonville Lifestyle visited with local State Farm agent Lauren Tullos.
AT WHAT AGE, AND WHAT POLICY SHOULD PEOPLE PURCHASE FIRST?
“Life insurance is by far the policy I am most passionate about, and I believe that it should be the first policy ever purchased on yourself or one someone you love. There is no better feeling for me as an agent than helping customers identify their true coverage needs and providing financial security through life insurance to help their family during one of the most difficult times they will face.
Incidentally, there are several milestones that can trigger the need for new or additional life insurance coverage, including births, marriage, purchasing a home, starting a business and young people who are starting to drive. Our youngest policyholders are 14 days old, which is the minimum age to write life insurance on a newborn.”
HOW OFTEN SHOULD A HOME OR BUSINESS OWNER REVIEW THEIR INSURANCE COVERAGE WITH THEIR AGENT?
“We recommend that our clients meet with our office team at least once per year. We proactively call our customers during their homeowners policy renewal month, and we offer them the option to meet virtually or in-person. During this time, we walk the customer through all policy coverages, deductibles and any major life milestones that have occurred
within the past year to ensure there are no new gaps or risks that should be addressed.”
IN RECENT YEARS, SEVERE WEATHER, INCLUDING TORNADOS, STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS AND FLOODING HAVE BECOME MORE COMMON IN OUR AREA. HOW SHOULD CUSTOMERS RESPOND?
“Two major ways customers are adapting to the increased frequency and severity of storms in our area include purchasing flood insurance and increasing the amount of coverage they have on the dwelling or ‘exterior shell’ of their home. Unfortunately, most people tend to be reactive about flooding. They only begin to worry about protecting their homes from water damage only after experiencing flooding in their basements, garages or other detached structures on their property. Without a separate flood insurance policy in place, there is
no coverage for structures or contents inside from weather-related flooding.
Reviewing and/or increasing the dwelling coverage each year ensures that your policy is keeping up with the rate of inflation. State Farm customers can have peace of mind knowing that we do this for them automatically, and we also cover their claim at 100% replacement cost.”
“I strongly recommend that my customers purchase umbrella policies. Unfortunately, we live in a lawsuit-happy world that can wreak havoc on personal assets in the event of litigation. A personal or commercial umbrella policy is the first line of defense in protecting assets. Umbrella coverage starts at $1 million in coverage, and it can be increased in million-dollar increments. I can say with confidence that State Farm offers one of the most competitively priced umbrella policies in the market that will safeguard the customer from the unforeseen, protect their assets and secure their financial future against liability claims.”
