new era of community is upon us. Expanding Lifestyle Publications to the greater Highlands Ranch area is certainly an honor and a privilege. Yes, Lone Tree and Castle Pines, this community-focused publication is equally yours as well. In case you haven’t been paying attention, print is cool again. I would fear the hard facts of how much of my day is spent staring at some sort of digital device (which is why this issue is fully digital as well). With that said, there is something about coming home in the evening, or being on a plane, or at a coffee shop, and holding something tangible.

We have an exciting year planned and it is our goal to serve as the community bulletin board. This is your magazine. As we continue to partner with more local businesses and organizations, our page count will also grow. We will soon get to know each other very well, but here is me in a nut shell: I love my wonderful family, Chair #5 at Vail Mountain (cried when it went hi-speed), the Kansas City Royals, banjo music, black coffee and IPA’s. I also love connecting with people in this amazing community - so let’s hang out sometime. From our family to yours, welcome to Highlands Ranch Lifestyle!

HIGHLANDS RANCH STUDENTS STRIVE FOR GREATNESS Eighth-grade students at Cresthill Middle School in Highlands Ranch looked at the biggest problems facing Colorado and developed their own video advertisements to explain how they would fix them. Thirty-seven teams representing 155 eighth graders spent three months on the projects, which were a collaboration among social studies, language arts, science and wellness classes. The social studies teacher, Sonja Herring, says the project reflected the district's focus on innovation, 21st century skills and real-world connections. "Rather than just learning about how one goes about impacting local government, we are actually trying to go through the process ourselves," she says. "Students were able to choose an issue that was truly affecting Colorado in which they could invest their time and passion." Groups eventually settled on a particular issue

Rotary Club of Denver and Denver Public Schools to support kindergarten through 12th-grade students in higher-risk environments— homelessness, poverty, attendance and behavioral challenges, single-guardian households—to help them graduate from high school, pursue post-secondary education and contribute to their communities. The organization continues to serve as a leader in youth intervention and dropout prevention, 70 years later, connecting more than 1,300 students in 144 Denver Public Schools with educational counselors and volunteer mentors each year. The 70th anniversary of Denver Kids is an opportunity to reflect on the organization’s history and take stock of its seven decades of enduring achievements in “accelerating the potential in every child.” To commemorate this significant milestone, Denver Kids is launching a call to action for community-wide support to address their waitlist; it currently grows by 20 students per month. The annual cost to support one student in the Denver Kids program is $2,750. “The long-term goal is to empower our young people to become contributing members of the community, and end the cycle of generational poverty one family at a time,” Denver Kids Board Chair, Billy Brown, explained. “It is a critical mission for them and for our local economy.” DenverKidsInc.org

Renovate & Refine

MINIMALIZE YOUR SPACE BECOMING A MINIMALIST MEANS LIVING MORE WITH LESS. IT'S NOT EASY, SO HERE'S A GUIDE TO GET YOU STARTED. ARTICLE SHERYL HADLEY FIVE WAYS YOU CAN SHOW THE CLUTTER IN YOUR LIFE WHO’S REALLY IN CHARGE.

1. Just get rid of these things—seriously. Why are you keeping them? 2. If you’re so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to begin, try starting with one small area that haunts you the most—a section of kitchen counter, a small table top. 3. Pick up five things and return them to their proper location. These should be items you’re used to seeing deposited on counters or floors: mail, the dog’s leash, a newspaper section, your daughter’s hair clip, random sport socks. If you don’t have a designated place for them, think about one that would suit, and start using it all the time. 4. Give yourself the gift of a “Maybe” box that you can put things in for now. Sometimes, even though we know we should get rid of something, we can’t quite let it go. Look at the random selection you’ve kept a few months down the road—chances are it will all go straight to donation. 5. Be a more conscious shopper so that you’re not filling your decluttered home with more clutter. Whenever you see something you want, add it to an ongoing list with the date you first saw it, and then revisit the list 30 days later. You may find when you check back that the urge to purchase it has gone. And if you do decide to get it, at least you’ve given the item the time and consideration it deserves. Living in a cluttered home or trying to work in a cluttered office is an exercise in frustration. Car keys get swallowed up, you can’t locate your important report in time for your meeting, or you replace something you can’t find only to have the original turn up shortly after. Isn’t that the worst? Make sure that never happens again by getting clutter under control... one unpaired sock at a time. SIX THINGS YOU CAN PART WITH

• Trash • Broken items • Duplicate objects • Items that don't match your decor • Gifts you never bonded with • Any gadget sitting unused for a year 28

SUMMER YOUTH CAMPS

An old-world architecture home breathes reinvented warmth for a Littleton family.

ARTICLE KRISTIN DOHERTY | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS LAPLANTE reativity can be hindered by two situations: a completely blank canvas with no limitations or a strict set of instructions to follow. With the home on Michener Way, the Design 571 team was granted the perfect mix of a blank slate and useful guidelines. While there was plenty of space to stretch their creativity, the home’s existing design elements meant they had to work with what they were given. Before Design 571 started, the home had several old world–style

features the family wasn’t keen on keeping. But rather than changing the unwanted details, Shawna Jaramillo, owner and designer of Design 571, opted to find ways to reinvent the style. “We had to ask ourselves, ‘How do you take this old-world style and do an updated look?’" says Jaramillo. For example, rather than replacing stone tile flooring in the foyer, living room and dining room, Jaramillo let it determine the color palette: The warm, earthy tones of the tile naturally led to a neutral palette. Meanwhile, soft blue undertones in the artwork in the living room add just a touch of color to the otherwise neutral room. Elements of old-world architecture—the columns and raised arches decorating each entryway, the intricate vaulted ceilings—didn’t quite match Jaramillo’s usual aesthetic. "My preferred style is more modern with clean lines and bright colors. This is really kind of the opposite of my typical,” Jaramillo says. Jaramillo used the existing architecture to fuel her vision. “The architecture definitely dictated the direction we went.” There were a lot of possible directions, she admits, but she set on a path to achieve a style that felt not only pretty and luxurious but also warm, inviting and welcoming. Despite the limitations, the home was, in many ways, a blank slate. The previous owners took every single light fixture before moving out, giving Jaramillo an opportunity to play with one of her favorite design elements. “I love lighting. I think it makes such a statement—like the jewelry in the room,” Jaramillo says. “Some people don’t want to spend the money on it, but a great light fixture really does finish off the room.”

"We had to ask ourselves, 'How do you take this old-world style and do an updated look?'"

She picked a different chandelier for nearly every room, each making its own statement and complementing the other fixtures without any dominating the others. For example, a damask wallpaper on the ceiling of the dining room draws the eye toward the statement-making capiz shell chandelier, but doesn't overpower the room. The simple color palette also presented a chance to experiment with patterns and textures. Throughout the home, you’ll find unexpected textural combinations: linen chairs around a wooden dining table, mercury candlesticks displayed in front of metallic grasscloth wallpaper, a leather ottoman atop a feathery area rug. Ultimately, the design pulled inspiration from the neutral, relaxed style of California beach homes and the soft, elegant features of French country homes. The result: A modern, truly Coloradan home that’s soft yet elegant, welcoming yet luxurious. March 2016 | Highlands Ranch Lifestyle

s John Winter leans on the shiny bar, laughing with a customer over a few pints of

beer, he says he never expected his craft brew-

ery to grow this large. Lone Tree Brewing Company started brewing about 50 barrels a year in 2011. Today, they’re making more than 2,400 barrels of beer per year. But Winter says the brewery is much more than just making—and drinking—beer. “It’s about creating a community atmosphere where people who share the excitement in the science, experimentation and development of a handcrafted beer can feel right at home," Winter says. Winter was a home-brewer for years before leaving behind the corporate grind. His desire to be part of the close partnerships and community the beer industry in Colorado provides, drew him to turn his hobby into a new career. From there, Lone Tree Brewing was born. Settled into a nondescript strip mall surrounded by manufacturers, Lone Tree Brewing was one of the first breweries to call the southern Denver suburbs home. Aimed to mimic the local neighborhood breweries seen throughout Europe, Winter wanted the European-style craft beer style incorporated into his brewery. But, they have since expanded into more experimental varieties, now leaving about one-third of the beers Belgian, German, English or Irish. In fact, the brewery won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2015 for their Mexican lager, making them the first craft brewery to medal since 1998. They also believe in using only Colorado-made and natural products. You can taste it at the first sip: Their Peach Pale Ale is made with actual peach puree. And, to focus on quality and excellence, Lone Tree Brewing sells only local products in the taproom. From local food trucks five days a week to the hand soap in the bathroom, all products are Colorado-made consumables. But what really sets Lone Tree Brewing apart is their dedication to charity. From supporting Reel Recovery, a group that provides free fly-fishing excursions for men with cancer, to helping the local humane society, the brewery contributes a portion of any tasting room sales to local nonprofits every month. To try their newest experiment though, a Belgian Dark Strong at 10 percent ABV brewed with 33 pounds of Belgian dark candied sugar, you’ll have to visit their taproom in Lone Tree. And maybe get a ride home from a friend.

1. Combine crushed malted barley and hot water in the mash tun. This converts the starches in the barley to sugars that the yeast eats in the fermenter later on. 2. After mixing, the liquid leaving the mash tun, now called wort, is sent to the boil kettle. 3. Boil the wort in the kettle for an hour and a half, then add hops or other experimental ingredients for flavor. 4. After boiling, cool the wort to around 65 degrees Fahrenheit and send it into the fermenters.
