S

ummer, like it does for many kids, smelled like chlorine and tasted like soft serve ice cream (vanilla and chocolate swirled; we could never choose). It sounded like lifeguard whistles and chalk scraping the sidewalk. It felt exhilarating and exhausting – at the same time. It was white, like the cloudless sky closest to the sun, and it went on for a whole lot longer than any three months we’d ever experienced.

There were beaches and grandma’s pools and creeks and big, giant, still lakes and pools with water slides dumping screaming kids into them and hoses and sprinklers that would do when you couldn’t get to the beaches, grandma’s pools, creeks, big, giant, still lakes and pools with water slides dumping screaming kids into them. There were bikes and stop signs, roller skates (and, in a few years, rollerblades) and sidewalk cracks always getting in the way. There were tents and s’mores and mosquito bites, bathing suits (so many bathing suits!) and towels that doubled as dresses and tripled as jackets and quadrupled as hats. There were dogs barking, fridges humming and Cokes popping open. Music draining out of passing cars. Big brothers scoffing at little sisters. We swallowed watermelon, sweet corn and squishy sandwiches just as often as we did salt water and lemonade. We missed bedtimes, sunscreen applications (ouch!) and the boys in our class. We never missed dance lessons, the chance to roll down a window and homework. It looked like sherbet-colored kickboards, green, green grass, threadbare pink sleeping bags on our best friend’s floor, the bumpy redness of a skinned knee, rainbow-colored tongues from sucking one too many Otter pops, white dandelion wisps, blowing and tickling. Used-up fireworks littering the cul-de-sac, forgotten shoes, discarded socks. It felt like air-conditioned rooms, serious, hope-to-die-stick-a-needle-through-my-eye secrets, the pang of just missing the ice cream truck, the joy of pulling up to the roller rink (and later the mall, and later still to the house of That Boy), icy water dripping from soaking hair to warm skin, hot pavement scorching bare feet. It felt like summer.

hat happens when the president of a landscaping company decides it’s time to redesign his own

yard? Well, he pulls out all the stops, of course! President and owner of Elite Landscape & Outdoor Living Peter Van went all out with his whole yard makeover. His sister (and Director of Business & Finance) Mary Van explains, “The home was a new build so Peter had a blank canvas to work with. His goal was to create an outdoor space that would make you feel as if you’re on a vacation when you step out back. Peter has a big family and they all usually come over throughout the week, so he wanted everyone to gather at a place that is both fun for the kids as well as the adults. “ Using Peter’s own design, the Elite team generated a complete renovation of the front, back and side yards. Various trees, shrubs and perennials were planted, along with raised garden planter boxes using cultured stones, custom iron rod gates around each side yard, a new driveway and more. Around the back, an outdoor kitchen and grilling area with veneer stone were added, including a natural gas fireplace with a sheer descent waterfall on each side. Peter also designed a custom roof as a permanent extension of the original roof of the home— including

E

ver find yourself on a beautiful summer afternoon with a hungry family and a hankering for a patio dining experience? Oh yeah - and a strong desire NOT to drive into Denver? If so, you and yours might head over to the ViewHouse in Centennial, just 15 minutes from Highlands Ranch near Dry Creek and I-25. Pull up on a clear summer afternoon and you’ll surely find that others have had the same idea, but free valet awaits, no reservations are required, and - you soon learn - the kids can play in the large game

And you’ll find this same inclusiveness on the menu. Born in the mind of chef Jose Guerrero who at age 14 started cooking in his family’s restaurant near food-famous Cicero in Chicago, Guerrero brings years of experience working in fine dining establishments around the world, from Hong Kong and Thailand to Amsterdam and Mexico City. With partners Francois Safieddine, Brad Manske and Paulina Szafranski, he founded the “ViewHouse twist” of cooking food properly and using only the best products. “Local when available, organic when possible, and always a fresh eating experience,” says Guerrero. When local or organic is not an option, Guerrero sources ingredients from likeminded artisans, and that means no antibiotics, hormones, or byproducts. Guerrero’s aim: to bring together “all the things a good bar would offer,” in a menu that suggests a Latin flair with French and Asian influences, “more Japanese than Chinese,” says Guerrero. Menu favorites include the Smokey Sliders slow-cooked with Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, the Colorado Seared CONTINUED >

room or enjoy lawn games outside like corn-hole and volleyball. Should you join the kids outside, or easily watch them from the open bar as you await that table with the promising view? The bar wins, and you scan the happy hour menu with deals like $3.00 sliders and drinks and $5.00 cocktails. You enjoy the live music while keeping an eye on the kiddos and marveling at the gigantic TVs around you, both indoors and out. Just as you and your family have forgotten you were “waiting” for your ViewHouse experience to begin, you’re led to a 2nd-f loor patio table surrounded by breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountain front range. Opened in 2014 after the f lagship ViewHouse hit a home run at its location near Coors Field, the Centennial restaurant boasts more rooftop dining than the Denver spot, plus the largest LED TV screens in Colorado. Drawing diners from the surrounding ‘burbs and Denver Tech Center, the ViewHouse is big enough in both structure and soul to strike the right chord for all types of diners, from happy hour revelers and live-music fans to business types and date-night couples. Striped Bass with lemon arugula, Lemon & Fig Flatbread, and the Nuts & Berries salad. “And the kids menu isn’t just the fried stuff you find on many kids’ menus,” says Guerrero. “We’ve got [items including] pigsin-a-blanket, mac and cheese, and a grilled chicken breast with any side they want.” But ask Guerrero what he's most passionate about, and it's the $28.95 brunch buffet, served Sundays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. “I’ve had brunches everywhere, and this rivals any,” says Guerrero. If you’re one who defines a “neighborhood restaurant” as one within walking distance from home, the ViewHouse’s Tech Center location may not quite qualify. But few could argue that this is a community restaurant to be sure. With community running clubs and volleyball tournaments, 20,000 square feet available for banquets and events, and live music from local bands, you’ll find a lively crowd at the ViewHouse most every night of the week. Add that to the eats, the panoramic views, and the unappetizing thought of traveling into Denver after a long week of commuting, and the ViewHouse certainly qualifies as a “neighborhood restaurant” for us suburbanites.

enry James said that the two most beautiful words in the English language were ‘summer afternoon,’ and while that pair is pretty stellar, we’d like to submit two more that rival the nostalgia and happiness that a summer afternoon

inspires: ice cream. On their own the words are alright at best, but placed together – the frosty ice leading the soft, sweet cream – and you’ve got magic in a bowl. Or cup. Or cone. Or on top of a cookie. However you scoop it, ice cream evokes all the sticky sweetness that life offers. We taste tested the latest and greatest frozen treats in Denver and the south suburbs – we know, our job is hard – so you can enjoy the best, most delicious ice cream on a summer afternoon. Bliss.

Think cow-to-cone flavors like Caramel Cloud Brulee, Challah Good! French Toast, and Voodoo Magick (made with Voodoo doughnuts). Gerry and Josh, the duo behind Frozen Matter, are truly taking ice cream to the next level, having studied vigorously at ice cream school (yes, that’s a thing), using on-site pasteurization, and insisting upon the highest quality, organic ingredients. A SOUTH SUBURBAN BREWERY TOUR? WE'LL DRINK TO THAT! ARTICLE REANNA DRIVER | PHOTOGRAPHY LEWIS MITCHELL

W

ith summer right around the corner, many of us have three things on our minds – beer, beer, and more beer. And with the explosion of craft breweries there’s good news for suburban-dwellers - you no longer have to make the trek downtown to enjoy local brews thanks to a multitude of neighborhood breweries. Get up close and personal with the fermentation tanks while savoring delicious local brews right in your own backyard. Save your money on an Uber downtown, and get an extra flight (or two!) in our neck of the woods.

standards. Enjoy your brews on the sunny patio, at the spacious bar, or at one of the many community tables inside the industrial-style brewery.

Conveniently located on the corner of County Line and Quebec, 3 Freaks Brewery describes itself as a “nano-brewery,” whipping up small batches of beer. The small batch brewing allows the team to be extremely creative in their concoctions. Check online or call ahead to see what’s on tap, but the Yoga Pants IPA is typically a staple, and if Jess’ Backyard Kolsch is available, order it! If you go on brew day, you can even see the brewers hard at work while you enjoy the fruits of their labor (not to mention the delicious roasted malt aroma). After you build your own sampler flight, you can chill out in the tasting room at the bar or catch some rays on their patio. The welcoming atmosphere, eclectic décor, and friendly staff make 3 Freaks a place at which you’ll want to stay and savor the tempting brews.
