Invest In What Matters Most

What are you planning to leave behind, to loved ones, your community? Thinking about your own death may seem morbid, but it's a great way to home in on what matters most to you. And what matters to you, you invest in — you put your time, talent and treasure for a lasting legacy. Invest, that's what we're exploring in this month's issue. In our pages, we bring to you a Highlands Ranch family that has filled their home with an impressive Western art collection handed down from the family's patriarch. This art collection has become so much more than just things handed down — it's become a way of life, building relationships with beauty. Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things such as our community, our relationships, our finances, and our health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets longterm financial goals and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.

While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.

BRUSHED ACROSS GENERATIONS

ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA LORD

A Highlands Ranch family has turned their suburban home into something more than just a residence. It’s a living gallery, a testament to the history of the American West and the relationships in their lives. Floor to ceiling, the walls are covered with images of sweeping plains, majestic buffalo, and rugged cowboys—each piece a thread in the tapestry of their story. This collection is not just about art; it is about connection, heritage, and the enduring spirit of the West. At the heart of this collection is a passion for Western art inherited from the family patriarch. Unlike many collectors who purchase art for its aesthetic value or popularity, his approach to collecting was deeply personal, prioritizing relationships with the artists themselves. “We’ve never just bought art,” one family member says. “We get to know the artists, their stories, their inspiration. Some have become close family friends.”

For the uninitiated, it’d be easy to dismiss this genre as kitschy or simply on-trend thanks to “Yellowstone” popularity. Lest you think Western art is of a bygone era:

“Dad kind of had a rule that he didn’t want to buy a piece of art unless he got to know the artist and liked them. Almost all artists are contemporaries, and we have become friends with them.”

Their father’s serious collecting began at the Out West Art Show in Great Falls, Montana. This annual event introduced them to some of the most talented Western artists, including members of the Skull Society associated with the C.M. Russell Museum. Over the years, they cultivated relationships with artists like Kyle Sims, Chad Poppleton, Jill Soukup, and Mark McKenna, acquiring works that spoke to their experiences and values. Among the most cherished pieces is a buffalo sculpture by Parker sculptor Stephen Leblanc, a proof of the sculpture at the entrance of CU Boulder’s football stadium, their alma mater.

The collection, spread between their Highlands Ranch home and their farmhouse on the Colorado plains, showcases the rugged beauty of the West and its way of life. As avid hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, they live in harmony with the land that has inspired so many of the works they treasure.

“Our collection tells our family’s story,” they explained. “Every piece carries a memory, a connection to a moment in time.”

“See the two leather reclining chairs in there? We put those in there so we can actually go in and sit and look out across the prairie by the artist Kyle Sims,” he says.

Their son was raised surrounded by works of art from a young age and developed an appreciation and respect for the collection’s significance. Their collection demonstrates their commitment to hard work and the refined living that follows.

This collection is more than just a visual display — it’s a narrative woven through generations. The family members catalog and preserve the history behind each piece. This shared appreciation ensures that the artistic legacy remains intact before any thoughts of public auction arise. Many friends and extended family members now own works of art from the original collection.

Beyond their collection, the stories reflect their passion for keeping history alive. “Art and history go hand in hand,” they said. “It’s about preserving moments, ensuring the stories don’t fade.”

Dr. Jerry McKellar – Dance of the Sun and Moon (Bronze plus Shadow)

Future plans include backyard renovations to incorporate outdoor art and extending the collection beyond the walls of their home as an ongoing commitment to engaging with the art rather than merely owning it. However, these wouldn’t be the first significant home renovations in service of these works. When the family patriarch passed away and bequeathed his collection to his children, this family remodeled their entire home to accommodate just a portion of the massive collection.

“Our home isn’t just decorated with art,” they said. “It’s history—our family’s history and our community’s collective history. When I walk past a painting, I don’t just see an image. I’m reminded of the process of selecting the piece, the connections fostered, and the story lived. That’s what makes it all so meaningful.”

Through brush strokes, bronze sculpting, and careful curation of each piece, these local collectors have created more than an art collection—they have built a legacy. The Western spirit, alive in every painting and sculpture, bridges the past, present, and future through the power of connection and storytelling.

Investing in the Legacy Campus

Career and Technical Education Pathways Bring Innovative Learning for Douglas County Students

“The DCSD Legacy Campus is a dream come true – representing an incredible investment by the community into the future of Douglas County,” said Erin Kane, Superintendent of the Douglas County School District.

With the passing of a bond in 2018, the Legacy Campus opened in 2023, giving Juniors and Seniors from Douglas County schools the opportunity to cultivate future careers through specific pathways. They currently offer nine Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways: Advanced Robotics, Architectural Engineering,  Aviation/Transportation, Building Controls, Technology, Culinary/Hospitality Management, EMT/EMS, Future Educator, Nursing (CNA), and Secure Network Technologies.

Investing in this innovative, hands-on learning experience proved an asset to students as the first year showed remarkable data. Of the four hundred students who attended the Legacy Campus for the 20232024 school year, 92% graduated, receiving 3,391 college credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.51, the second highest GPA of the DCSD high schools. College credits enable families to save on future tuition expenses, and Legacy Campus students saved $1,081,230.

Students attend classes at the Legacy Campus twice weekly for a portion of their regular school day with transportation provided. All Legacy classes contribute to high school credits for practical arts or electives, and include field trips, events, job shadowing, apprenticeship, and more. With a 96% attendance rate, this learning style is proving its worth.

“The Legacy Campus is a place where students can find their pathway and passion in life. It’s also a place where partnerships between the school district, colleges and universities, businesses, industries and municipalities truly come to life,” Erin emphasizes.

As the students progress through the program, they embark on a path specific to their interests with opportunities to network with preferred employers. Not only do these students have a higher graduation rate, the program also increases their employability. According to the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium, graduates of high school CTE programs are 4.1% more employable and receive $141 more per quarter in earnings.

As the county invests in the students, the community reaps the benefits. Building partnerships with local businesses fosters growth for companies and future employees. Everything from sponsoring events, marketing opportunities, and tax-deductible donations helps contribute to the local economy, enhancing the investment of the Legacy Campus.

In addition to partnerships, the Legacy Campus provides our community with a fantastic event space. Since its inception, the campus has hosted over 100 events, from graduations, career fairs, and spelling bees to bar mitzvahs and weddings. The local impact of this stellar space reaches far and wide throughout the county.

The success of the Legacy Campus has been paramount for many families, and the investment is just starting. In 2024, taxpayers approved funding for Phase II of the Legacy Campus. This bond will allow for necessary maintenance, security upgrades, and additional CTE pathways like Carpentry, Electrical, Advanced Manufacturing, and Electric Vehicle/Hybrid Maintenance and Repair. The expansion will feature 20,000 additional square feet of space for further learning.

“As we prepare for the construction of ‘Phase Two’ programming, we have already seen recent Legacy graduates return as apprentice electricians with some of our industry partners to complete work in our facility,” Rex proclaims. “We are incredibly proud of these students.”

Lone Tree’s Roots Run Deep for the Bergeon Family

Meet your Neighbor:

Chris Bergeon

President of Eberl Claims Service and Colorado native, Chris Bergeon, reveals why planting roots in Lone Tree 24 years ago was the best decision for his family.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.

I’m a Colorado native born in Boulder, raised in Arvada, attended the University of Denver and now reside in wonderful Lone Tree. After college, I moved away for about 10 years for different career pursuits, and obtained an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania where I met my wife of 29 years, Annette. After the birth of our twin sons, we moved back to Colorado to raise our family.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND HOW DO YOU RE-CHARGE?

For fun, I enjoy skiing at Winter Park and snowmobiling. I play beer-league hockey year-round, ride my mountain bike around the Bluffs loop, and chase the little white ball around the Lone Tree golf course whenever possible.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS AROUND TOWN?

Favorite restaurants: Blue Island Oyster Bar, Moonga Sushi, Cranelli’s, Viet Pho and Poke One. We love to ride our e-bikes around town, catch the occasional show at Lone Tree’s Performing Arts Center, and walk our dog around the LT golf course every evening. Lone Tree has been an incredible place to call home. We feel connected to Lone Tree’s amazing resources, and importantly, to each other as a community!

As President for Eberl, it’s gratifying to be on the front line deploying help for the California wildfires, Hurricanes Milton and Helene. We assess the damage and help insurance companies effectively distribute critical funds into the hands of policyholders for their road to recovery and restoration.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

Along with our 24-year-old twin sons, Matt and Drew, we are blessed with a 21-year-old daughter Olivia. Our daughter was among the first babies born in the incredible Sky Ridge Hospital. Our boys were among the first 1st grade class at the then-brand-new Lone Tree Elementary, where all three kids attended until moving on to Cresthill Middle School then Regis Jesuit High.

FAITH AND FOCUS

Believe in Yourself, Invest in Your Future

Poonam “Pam” Moore is an award-winning interior designer, remodeling general contractor and the founder of Poonam’s By Design. You may recognize her from HGTV’s Rico to the Rescue, 100 Day Hotel Challenge and more to come in 2025. (Hint, hint, keep an eye out.) With local stores in Park Meadows and Southlands, we had a chance to meet in person and hear a little bit about her story.

“So, if you want to do something, focus in, put your faith out there, believe in yourself...and just start taking the step.”

When asked about her values, Pam responds, “I’m very much a God-fearing girl. I have always believed in spiritual life and balance of that. I live in that space of gratitude, daily gratitude, because really knowing where I came from, knowing how I grew up and knowing where I am at now, it’s a very ‘pinch me’ moment. It’s all the things and beyond that I ever would have dreamt of as a girl.”

Born in Fiji, Pam moved to Los Angeles, Calif., when she was eight years old. Her mom worked two jobs to support their family. Pam describes, “My mom is a fighter. She’s strong and she’s ‘family first.’” She attributes her mom’s hard work to building a legacy which is something she is intentional to continue.

The qualities Pam shares about her mom are the same qualities she exemplifies during our short time together. The passion and support she shows for her team as well as her family is beaming.

One of her project managers, Elizabeth Moore, says, “She tells me to never limit myself and never stay in the box. If I have more than one idea, she’s always supported me. She breaks the box and makes the box bigger.”

As a little girl, Pam was always a big dreamer. She reflects, “I always saw something beyond. I always tried to reach for whatever I couldn’t see. Even when I was in school, I knew I would do this.”

Coming from a background of poverty and abuse, Pam talks about Oprah as someone who influenced her. She explains, “[Oprah] didn’t let [anything] make her a victim. She actually used [it] as her grit. She used [it] as her fuel. I’m the same exact way. I’m very optimistic. I decided all the things that I’ve been through in my life were going to give me grit. And I was going to live out this great life and teach my daughters that nothing can stop them.. nothing.. only they can stop them.”

Pam also found great inspiration in her aunt who worked hard and found success for herself. “I looked at people who struggled. I looked to people’s stories to find a common thread to see that there was hope.”

As a minority business owner and female contractor in a man’s world, Pam is striking milestones. She holds herself and her team in full confidence based on hard work and grit. Rather than limit herself to a singular expertise, she broke both barriers and became an interior designer and remodeling general contractor.

It’s due to Pam’s vision for impossible things that gave her clarity in her career to combine these two trades. She says, “I was thinking about building when I was becoming a designer, and there was no such thing as a design-build back then. Either you were a designer or you were a builder. There was not a combination of the two and really to today there is not a combination of the two.”

By developing the two skill sets in tandem, Pam has carved a precise path for herself and her team. Her eye for a project enters dimensions within both remodeling builds and interior design. So whether you want to renovate or elevate your space, this creates a smoother project overall. You don’t have to hire a contractor and then bring in an interior designer after. Poonam’s By Design takes the entire project in a fierce stride and they see every project to full satisfaction and completion.

“I live in that space of daily gratitude, because really knowing where I came from...It’s all the things and beyond that I ever would have dreamt of as a girl.”

“Whether you want to upgrade all your light fixtures and give it a whole new look. Do drapery, window treatments, whatever it is, we do everything ‘home.’ We can do as little or as much as you want to kind of elevate your spaces. Wall treatments, light fixtures, furnishings and accessories… We do kitchens, baths, whole house remodels... most of our jobs end up becoming whole house remodels,” she states.

Married 29 years to her husband, Everett, who is a retired Denver police officer, Pam expresses, “He’s my entire rock. He’s my biggest cheerleader… We built everything we have together.” With a family of four daughters and three grandchildren, her advice is to, “Live your

best life and do what you want. Don’t listen to other people’s expectations.”

She encourages those who are looking for that push to pursue their dreams. “You can’t wait for the right moment because there’s never going to be a right moment. You can’t wait for someone to tell you it’s time. No one’s going to tell you it’s time. So, if you want to do something, focus in, put your faith out there, believe in yourself, believe in something bigger and just start taking the steps... put the work into it. Nothing is going to come easy. You have to put the work into it. Everything takes grit and work… Learn your lessons. Keep it moving. That’s how you do it.”
