Lifestyle Letter takeover! GOCA Executive Director Doug Barron, far right, with this year’s Lifestyle Publications cancer warrior honorees.
Jim Newman | jnewman@lifestylepubs.com 770.217.1282 EDITOR
Hello friends, EVERY YEAR, 22,000 WOMEN ARE DIAGNOSED WITH OVARIAN CANCER. My mother-in-law, Wendy Sheron, was one of those women in 2001. She lost her battle in 2007. If we only knew the risks and symptoms of this disease then, I think she would still be with us today. The mission of Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) is to educate as many people as possible about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer because, currently, there is no early detection test for the disease. Early detection and treatment are vital to increasing survival odds.

The team shared best practices, schedules, and resources that helped their school become one of the top-performing elementary schools in Georgia. Autrey Mill Middle School sixth-graders were visited by representatives from Wales via the British Consulate in Atlanta. Students learned fun facts on geography, government, economics, history, the flag, national anthem, language and even number of castles (over 600!). Two Alpharetta High School (AHS) senior members of the AHS Debate Team took top honors at national competitions in Kentucky and Utah. SO- WHEN YOU GOT MARRIED THEY DIDN’T SNORE. Slowly over the years things have changed. Now there is a chain saw in the bedroom! One of you has moved out to the guest room. Now, they are always tired, have dark circles under their eyes, grumpy and are probably grinding their teeth too. Even worse...your child is snoring. Don’t just blame it on a cold. They do it all the time. They sleep with their mouth open and just not breathing well. They have ground their baby teeth down to nubs and everyone just says “oh it’s normal.” No, it is not normal at all. This is not just SNORING. Behind the “Snoring Curtain” are issues that must be diagnosed and resolved. If any of this sounds familiar keep reading. There are so many levels to this problem. People can die during an apneic event. They stop breathing. At the very least when we snore, we are not going into a deep sleep.

Outdoor Envy.
My first introduction to sleep apnea was with my grandmother. I was 15 years old. We had to share a bedroom on a vacation. Lord, she snored and stopped breathing so many times I would lie there awake, scared, and think she was dead. She would lie there without a breath for 30 seconds or more! Then with a huge snort, she would take a deep breath. Does this sound like your loved one? She died later with dementia that was caused by her hundreds of bouts of apnea. She stopped breathing for years

machine is not always the answer so don’t stop reading. After a discussion with the patient, we talk about the route of diagnosing this issue. Since there are so many reasons and treatments, it’s important to not just label everyone the same. We must listen to the patient and really think about the reasons and plan of action. Not getting this resolved can break up marriages. I have had patients really upset over their situations. Depending on the chat we determine if it’s a sinus or dental issue. If it’s a sinus issue, I always refer all my patients to a great ENT who knows sleep issues and how to resolve them. You want to get this resolved. In children, this is terrible to let it go on. So please don’t! Children especially feel the effects. Chronic sinusitis, throat infections, mouth breathing, flattened baby teeth, poor performance in school - these are all the signs. Facial boney development can be affected by a child’s inability to breath. If any of this sounds familiar -“ Houston, we have a problem” another round of antibiotics for their sixth sinus infection is not acceptable. Your poor child needs to be seen by an appropriate doctor who can get it right and resolved. After a thorough evaluation by us and possibly an ENT doctor, maybe a sleep study for a spouse, the recommended treatment can be prescribed. This could be as simple as an appliance to wear to change the jaw position or a nasal or sinus surgery. Any of the prescribed solutions will help you breathe better, sleep better, which will make you feel better!! Get your partner back in the bedroom.

ideal to craft their cocktails on par with the industry’s most elite. A mutual friend of Cohen and Reisman, David Stein—and co-founder of Creature Comforts Brewing—worked alongside a mixologist a few years prior at Decatur’s world-renowned beer bar, Brick Store; his name was Miles Macquarrie. Since punching the clock together, Macquarrie became world-renowned for his skills with the stirrer and shaker, co-owning Kimball House and Watchman’s Seafood and Spirits, and being a six-time James Beard Award nominee to further solidify his expertise. And even with all of the accolades and commitments, he knew Tip Top was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. The results were Macquarrie’s flawless interpretations of three classic sippers. “We landed on the Old Fashioned, Negroni and Manhattan because they’re the trifecta of bitter, high proof cocktails that we knew could be shelf-stable in a can,” Cohen says. Next was the packaging. Esteemed design firm Sasso & Co produced miniature, 100-ml white cans so cute a grandmother would want to pinch, branded by a distinguished giraffe sporting a top hat and monocle who represented “convenient access to the highest quality” according to Cohen. By September of 2019, Tip Top was officially ready for sale. Bottoms up, Alpharetta! Tiptopcocktails.com 30

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME
ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

ANGEL HOUSE THE INSPIRING STORY OF THE ORGANIZATION BRINGING ABANDONED CHILDREN FROM THE SLUM TO SAFETY + INTO THE LOVING ARMS OF CARETAKERS WHO WILL RAISE THEM TO BECOME FUTURE LEADERS IN THEIR GENERATION
MORE THAN 31 MILLION ORPHANS IN INDIA LIVE TRAGIC LIVES IN THE SLUMS; COMPLETELY ALONE, SEARCHING FOR A PLACE TO CALL HOME. No families, no proper clothing, and no sense of stability whatsoever. Without a miraculous rescue, each child is doomed to end up in one of three places: forced child trafficking, child labor, or begging on the streets. The reality of this injustice came to life for Lindsay Russo while caring for a group of hungry orphans during a humanitarian trip to India in 2010. Nearly 70 children, full orphans, had gathered into a tiny room with dirt floors and cinder block walls to eat their one and only meal for the day being provided by a local feeding program. The children ranged from ages 3 to 12, and they had no place to live. Moved with compassion, Lindsay was unable to turn a blind eye to what she had just witnessed. She thought, ‘These children need a safe place to call home,’ and upon her return to the States, she was determined to make it happen.

TREND SETTER LET TEXTURE AND SHADOWS ADD LAYERS OF DESIGN GRAY AND BEIGE? NO WAY - Inspired by
ARTICLE CATHY HILLMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
the need to visually show customers how to blend gray and beige tones, I created this shower to showcase just how well beige, creams and grays can blend together in the perfect combination. With the touch of a blended mix of handmade glass mosaics and penny round tiles on the shower floor, the champagne bronze fixtures bring to life these two normally contrasting color palettes. THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX - Round mirrors, circular vanity globe lighting and a natural marble leaf pattern mosaic backsplash provide visual confirmation that different shapes can be used together to create uniqueness, variety and a risk well worth taking. The variation of color and texture in the marble tiles tie in all the elements of this shower and vanity design by introducing subtle hints of each tone and texture throughout the space. SUEDE IS IN – Tired of the same polished countertops and seeing constant watermarks? Try a suede finish instead. Known for its sleek matte finish, suede countertops provide a pop in a new vanity. The charcoal vanity hosts a subtle brown wood grain peering slightly through the cabinet finish which gives depth and warmth.
