PUBLICATION. Birmingham Life is about supporting the local community while creating a fun outlet to keep up-to-date with what's happening around town. Each month, our goal is to focus on the people, businesses, places and events that make Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills one of the best places in Michigan to reside. As we all look forward to the excitement of what the new year will bring, the expectations of setting goals and meeting those goals are always oh-so-present. This is the year 2020, and we all say the same thing: this is the year I am going to eat better, going to lose weight, going to work out...lofty goals for sure. Personally, this year I am going to take a practical approach and set goals that are both challenging but achievable. This issue is dedicated to those who share a common resolution to live healthier and happier in 2020! Cheers,

Although the home is 4,600 square feet, Top Producing Realtor at KW Domain in Birmingham Sheel Sohal said it feels well over 5,000. “The home has fewer walls throughout, which makes the high ceilings feel its open-layout concept,” Sohal described. The builder, Manco Homes, focused on planning versus execution through the nearly two-year building process of this home that contains all-white, superwhite walls and other modern construction features, such as white oak flooring, which Sohal said “has become the latest trend.” “While the flooring is white-oak, it holds the opportunity to be re-stained later down the road if desired,” Sohal added.

HOLGISTIC IS CREATING A BRIDGE BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

LOCATED IN ROYAL OAK, HOLGISTIC WELLNESS CENTER IS AN INTEGRATED TOTAL HEALTH CARE FACILITY THAT INCLUDES A PROFESSIONAL TEAM OF TRADITIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE SPECIALISTS WHO ARE FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING SUCCESSFUL AND AFFORDABLE DISEASE PREVENTION PROGRAMS AND SOLUTIONS FOR PATIENTS. Dr. Jill Skurnowicz RN, BSN, MS, CRNA, ND, a naturopathic doctor who graduated with her doctorate in naturopathic medicine, works two to three days a week in the operating room as a nurse anesthetist at Beaumont Hospital and knows the importance of marrying traditional and alternative medicine together. “We are happy to meet the patient where they are in their healthcare journey and can work with external physicians to help strengthen patients,” Dr. Skurnowicz said. Steadfast in being patient-centric, Holgistic’s success is based upon patients’ long-term good health and treats the root, not just the symptoms. This is why Holgistic patients spend more than one hour at their first visit (and more than often two). “I also put in an additional hour or two before and after the intake,” Dr. Skurnowicz explained. “No two patients are the same, so we tailor everything to individuals. No one-size-fits-all here.” Dr. Skurnowicz focuses on autism, autoimmune and cancer support but said there really is not a patient the team at Holgistic could not help. In addition to Dr. Skurnowicz, some other key team members include nutritionist Gray Jessiman MA, CNTP and CNFC, a certified practitioner in the Bredesen Protocol, who holds Saturday cooking classes for those interested in learning how to cook for brain-healthy diets, as well as Dr. Abdulhassan Saad, MD, who treats Substance Use Disorder. Holgistic’s
“Transcending
Addiction,
Redefining
Recovery,” a substance abuse program, includes a comprehensive package for those recovering from drugs and alcohol. The treatment plans provide a consultation with a psychologist, naturopathic physician, acupuncturist, nutritionist, as well as supplements and IV therapies to support detox and recover the body. If necessary, Dr. Saad can provide medication-assisted treatment, as well. Holgistic specializes in customizing IV infusions, including those for weight loss and immunity boost. Extensive diagnostic testing is done beforehand to determine each individual patient’s needs, and the IVs and injections are delivered by a skilled registered nurse. CONTINUED >

A PATIENT-CENTERED APPROACH TO HEALTHCARE
(CON TI N UED)
“There’s not a patient our nurse can’t treat,” Dr. Skurnowicz said. Acupuncture is another one of Holgistic’s service offerings. In addition to the initial two-hour appointment where a detailed health history and examination are completed, the acupuncturist will also work closely with physicians to design a plan to stimulate certain points on the patient’s body, helping them not just achieve– but also maintain–optimal health. “The number of treatments depends on the person,” Dr. Jacquie Worthy DOM (NM), NCCAOM Diplomate Acup, CH, OM explained. “Acupuncture has been around for such a long time, and that’s because it works.” In addition to its numerous services, Holgistic also houses its own working apothecary (with a registered herbalist on-site) and product line, selling dry herbs, tea blends, CBD products, essential rollers and much more. “We even have seasonal flu kits, so you can give the gift of health,” Dr. Skurnowicz said, laughing. On the first Tuesday of every month at 6:45 p.m., Dr. Skurnowicz hosts a drop-in support group for parents and kids with Autism, high-functioning Autism, Asperger's, PDD-NOS and Sensory

TAKING THE SPA EXPERIENCE TO A NEW LEVEL
“We train them to be the best of the best,” Lyko said, proudly. Lyko published Beyond Relaxation a couple years ago, a book about different departments within the spa business, and is working on another title that includes a seven-step success formula for businesses looking to soar: Maximize Your Massage Therapy Department Profits. Spa Mariana’s two current locations are at 909 Haynes in Birmingham and 6447 Inkster in Bloomfield Hills. Services include massage therapy, advanced therapies, facials, face treatments, body treatments, nail treatments, waxing, body work, spray tan, eyelash services and more, which are all explained in-depth on spamariana.com. Another one of Lyko’s goals for 2020 is for Spa Mariana to become a member-based spa. “It’s not a place you come in and out,” Lyko said. “It’s an experience.” For more information on any of the Spa Mariana locations, send an e-mail to info@ spamariana.com or call (248)-792-2050.

Massage Therapy
Lyko believes that “one needs to experience a good massage to know its benefits to body and spirit.” Signature, Swedish, Deep Tissue, Deluxe Full Body, Aromatherapy, Prenatal, LaStone, East-Meets-West, Traditional Thai, Reflexology, Skin Revitalization and Lomi Lomi are only some of the massage therapy options at Spa Mariana.
Cupping Therapy
Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine where a Spa Mariana therapist will place special cups on the skin for a few minutes to create suction; this type of deep-tissue massage could help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and overall well-being.
Half-a-Days
In addition to half-a-days tailored to couples, they can also be tailored to anyone looking for a longer spa stay with more than one service offering at a time. Each season there will be a new theme with new half-a-day service offerings from Spa Mariana’s therapists.
Spa Parties
If you are looking for a memorable and relaxing experience for a group, look no further than Spa Mariana’s Spa Parties, which are a great way to celebrate bridal occasions, birthday celebrations, baby showers, girls’ night-outs and more.

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR VOLUNTEERING STEM FROM? Growing up Christian, CEO of Holliday Insurance Company Lucretia Holliday said her life has been focused on serving and giving back what God has given her. She comes from a family of generations who serve, making it “automatic” in her words. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE? Holliday said there used to be an after-school program in Detroit near the Cass Corridor where she and other volunteers would supply after-school snacks to about 30-40 kids. “I realized through doing this that not everyone gets a birthday cake every year, which I guess I never really considered,” she said. “We would supply cake
