Thanks to Valentine's Day, February is also a month to reflect on who or what we love most. This has to be the favorite month for card companies and, of course, your favorite local chocolatier and flower shop. Count me in as a true believer! From the time I was in grade school and we would trade valentines with young ladies in class to now being happily married, I believe it is a great day to spend with someone you love! It is my sincere hope that everyone is enjoying my new publication as much as we are putting it together. I have met so many wonderful people and look forward to meeting many more. Please, if you have an idea or would like to nominate someone for a feature story, feel free to contact me. From myself, Danielle (editorial coordinator) and Laura (photographer), we wish you a wonderful February and a Happy Valentine's Day! Cheers,

We don’t repeat the same things, which really makes it hard for us since we have to come up with new accessories every time. Joe, for example, wanted a lot of art that was made by Detroit artists or felt like it came from Detroit.” Additionally, part of Davis’ and Johnson’s process is to teach clients the "why." They pride themselves on never making a final decision for a client. Instead, they tell them the pros and cons since they believe a house is much more beautiful if the homeowner can explain the choices versus, as Davis said, “the HGTV way” where homeowners walk into an already-finished home, having made little to no choices along the way. “They really enjoyed the moment when I started to get my swagger and was able to start

Birmingham Life | February 2020

AS A SECOND-GENERATION ITALIAN, KRISTEN BAFFO LEARNED EARLY-ON THAT ALL OF LIFE’S PROBLEMS CAN BE SOMEHOW CURED BY FOOD. Rough day? Bolognese. Feeling ill? Chicken soup. Date night in? Lamb chops! Food is Baffo’s love language; it’s something she has an immense passion for as a home cook, but most of all, it’s how she shows her love. With two little ones, date nights out to new restaurants are not always an option. So, when a date night in is on the calendar, she likes to make it special and whip up something she wouldn’t cook on her typical weekly menu.

pan-seared, herb-crusted lamb chops with balsamic reduction I n g r e d i e n ts + 6 French-cut lamb chops + 4 cloves of garlic + 1 1/2 Tablespoon fresh rosemary, minced + 1 1/2 Tablespoon fresh thyme, minced + 1 1/2 Tablespoon fresh basil, minced + Olive oil + Freshly-cracked pink himalayan sea salt and black pepper + 1 cup balsamic vinegar + 2 Tablespoon brown sugar + 2 Tablespoon port wine

Method 01 In a large dish, combine lamb chops, garlic, herbs, salt and pepper. Drizzle with olive oil until well-coated. Using your hands, massage herbs and garlic into the chops until the herbs and garlic are evenly distributed. 02 Marinate for at least 30 minutes at room temperature. 03 While chops are marinating, prepare the balsamic reduction. Combine balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and port wine in a saucepan. Stir together at medium-high heat and bring mixture to a boil. Once boiling, turn the heat down to low, allowing the sauce to simmer until reduced by half (about 15-20 minutes). 04 Coat a large cast iron skillet with olive oil and bring to high heat. Sear three lamb chops at a time for two minutes on each side for medium rare. 05 Remove and plate the chops once they are finished, allowing them to rest for five minutes under foil.

Along with her husband Edward Schnee, she founded a design consulting firm and modern design shop in Detroit in 1948 called Adler-Schnee, which brought good design into "important modern homes and larger institutions” through the 70s. Adler Schnee continues to shape the look and feel of the mid-century modern interior as she still works as a textile and interior designer at the age of 96. Among many achievements throughout her lifetime, Adler Schnee received the Kresge Eminent Artist Award in 2015, the Women in the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award and American Institute of Architects’ International Color Award and is the subject of the documentary The Radiant Sun: Designer Ruth Adler Schnee, which is being shown at Cranbrook in conjunction with the exhibition.

Starting the last week of January each year, Knio said that customers will notice that everything will turn into hearts throughout the month of February. From pastries to chocolates, there will be a variety of sweets and treats to purchase for loved ones. “If it’s not a heart-shaped dessert, it will have a heart on it,” Knio said, laughing. “We have a specific Valentine’s Day menu we use.” Cannelle, which is French for cinnamon, is known for using far less sugar than most sweets one will find in America. “We do not make anything with more than 15 percent sugar, and the sugar we do use is natural,” Knio said. “We don’t use artificial sugar in anything.” Knio said his dream has always been to have a few Cannelles and was presented with an opportunity to open one in Detroit a couple years ago. “In the beginning I was hesitant to go downtown, but after seeing what’s happening to the city, I wanted to be a part of it all,” Knio explained about his decision to open a second retail location at 45 W Grand River Avenue. In the summer of 2020, Knio said a third Cannelle will actually open its doors in Ann Arbor. “Every manager goes and trains in Birmingham first,” Knio explained. “It’s the main hub for training. A graduate of the Academie de Versailles in France, Knio maintains the quality of fine French baking, which requires a more demanding commitment and lifestyle than most people are willing to take on. He said he prioritizes the taste and quality Cannelle serves customers, but equally important, the service that is provided to them, as well. “We feel people will always come back if we do not treat them like numbers,” Knio explained. “Even for those just coming in for a cup of coffee, we are always spending time at our meetings asking ourselves, ‘How can we improve?’” Cannelle Patisserie is located at 159 North Eton and can cater weddings and events. NEW IN WITH THE

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the

tips

wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.

Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
